The Real And Represented Ophelia: An Investigation Of Choreographing Women's Madness In Concert Dance, Jacqueline M. Garcia
The Real And Represented Ophelia: An Investigation Of Choreographing Women's Madness In Concert Dance, Jacqueline M. Garcia
Theatre & Dance ETDs
The character Ophelia, from William Shakespeare's Hamlet, is an iconographic symbol and cultural emblem of beauty, death and madness. For over four hundred years, her vividly described and picturesque death has inspired the works of countless visual artists and theatrical performers. However, her presence in the larger cultural consciousness of society is not limited only to the realms of fine art, theatre, and literature. Throughout history, her influence has also spilled over into everyday perceptions and beliefs regarding the nature of women and madness. Particularly within Victorian England, Ophelia's character came to influence the recognition and diagnosis of madness in …
Buscando El Moro: A Constructivist Approach To Health Decision-Making In A Dominican Batey, Hilary Harrison Cook
Buscando El Moro: A Constructivist Approach To Health Decision-Making In A Dominican Batey, Hilary Harrison Cook

The field of public health has long sought to improve health and well-being. Originally incorporating socially embedded views of health, the field of epidemiology has largely abandoned this perspective in exchange for statistics-based approximations in population health research. However, a new movement in public health has been gaining momentum slowly that legitimizes other ways of approaching this research. In particular, value has been placed on lived health experiences, and supporting both social justice and community-based health research. By challenging the epistemological grounds of traditional epidemiological research, an argument is put forth for a constructivist epistemology in health research. Simply put, …
A Protected Area Influences Genotype-Specific Survival And The Structure Of A Canis Hybrid Zone, John F. Benson, Brent R. Patterson, Peter J. Mahoney
A Protected Area Influences Genotype-Specific Survival And The Structure Of A Canis Hybrid Zone, John F. Benson, Brent R. Patterson, Peter J. Mahoney
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
It is widely recognized that protected areas can strongly influence ecological systems and that hybridization is an important conservation issue. However, previous studies have not explicitly considered the influence of protected areas on hybridization dynamics. Eastern wolves are a species of special concern and their distribution is largely restricted to a protected population in Algonquin Provincial Park (APP), Ontario, Canada, where they are the numerically dominant canid. We studied intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing survival and cause-specific mortality of hybrid and parental canids in the three-species hybrid zone between eastern wolves, eastern coyotes, and gray wolves in and adjacent to …

Translational Neuroscience
A 3-pyridyl ether scaffold bearing a cyclopropane-containing side chain was recently identified in our efforts to create novel antidepressants that act as partial agonists at α4β2-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. In this study, a systematic structure-activity relationship investigation was carried out on both the azetidine moiety present in compound 3 and its right-hand side chain, thereby discovering a variety of novel nicotinic ligands that retain bioactivity and feature improved chemical stability. The most promising compounds, 24, 26, and 30, demonstrated comparable or enhanced pharmacological profiles compared to the parent compound 4, and the N-methylpyrrolidine analogue 26 also exhibited robust antidepressant-like efficacy in …
Vertical Ecology Of The Pelagic Ocean: Quantified Patterns And New Perspectives, Tracey Sutton
Vertical Ecology Of The Pelagic Ocean: Quantified Patterns And New Perspectives, Tracey Sutton
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
Applications of acoustic and optical sensing and intensive, discrete-depth sampling, in concert with collaborative international research programs, have substantially advanced our knowledge of pelagic ecosystems in the 17 years since the last Deep-water Fishes FSBI Symposium. Although the epipelagic habitat is the best-known, and remote sensing and high-resolution modeling allow near-synoptic investigation of upper layer biophysical dynamics, ecological studies within the mesopelagic and deep-demersal habitats have begun to link lower and upper trophic level processes. Bathypelagic taxonomic inventories are far from complete but recent projects (MAR-ECO and CMarZ, supported by the Census of Marine Life program) have quantitatively strengthened distribution …

The Effect Of Geography And Personal Experience On Attitudes And Perceptions Of The Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction, Erin Marchand
The Effect Of Geography And Personal Experience On Attitudes And Perceptions Of The Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction, Erin Marchand
Geography ETDs
This research examines the attitudes and perceptions of residents in Catron County and Harding County, New Mexico regarding the Mexican gray wolf reintroduction program under the Endangered Species Act. Catron County is within the wolf recovery zone and residents must deal with consequences of having wolves in the area. Harding County is located on the opposite side of the state and is removed from the wolf reintroduction area. Understanding the perceived concerns and benefits of the wolf reintroduction program and if those concerns change based on geographic proximity to the reintroduction can reveal whether cultural biases or personal experience with …

To Thrive, Work, And Live: Progress Toward And Challenges To Sustainability On The Frei Gondim Settlement, Pernambuco, Brazil, William Maxwell
Geography ETDs
The sugar plantation zone of Pernambuco, Brazil, with a conservative culture forged out of chattel slave history, has been the most challenging region for the Brazilian landless peasants movement to penetrate in order to implement agrarian reform. The movement founded the Frei Gondim Settlement in the heart of the region in 1994 in order to present an alternative to the pollution of sugar monoculture and the injustices of landlessness around it. This thesis holds that the settlement represents a true alternative, but that the juxtaposition of a settlement socially isolated from its surroundings with a mode of production in which …

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a non-invasive, geophysical tool that can be used for the identification of clandestine graves. GPR operates by detecting density differences in soil by the transmission of high frequency electromagnetic waves from an antenna. Domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) carcasses were clothed in 100% cotton t-shirts and 50% cotton/50% polyester briefs, and buried at a consistent depth at three field sites of contrasting soil texture (silty clay loam, fine sand and fine sandy loam) in southern Ontario. GPR was used to detect and monitor the graves for a period of 14 months post-burial. Analysis of collected …

Length Structure Of Deep-Pelagic Fishes Sheds New Light To Their Life Histories, M. Heino, David S. Boukal, Tone Falkenhaug, Uwe Piatkowski, F. M. Porteiro, Tracey Sutton
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
Here we use a new technique to study life history variation in deep-pelagic fishes from a mid-ocean ridge system. Shape of length distribution in a population is to a significant extent determined by the degree to which an average individual approaches its asymptotic maximum size. Analysing the material from the pelagic trawl hauls taken during the 2004 Mar-Eco expedition along the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge, we show that length distributions in many deep-pelagic fish species are characterised by negative skew (the left tail of the distribution is longer). In other words, a large proportion of individuals had a size close to …
Am-Fm Analysis Of Structural And Functional Magnetic Resonance Images, Alvaro Emilio Ulloa Cerna
Am-Fm Analysis Of Structural And Functional Magnetic Resonance Images, Alvaro Emilio Ulloa Cerna
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This thesis proposes the application of multi-dimensional Amplitude-Modulation Frequency-Modulation (AM-FM) methods to magnetic resonance images (MRI). The basic goal is to provide a framework for exploring non-stationary characteristics of structural and functional MRI (sMRI and fMRI). First, we provide a comparison framework for the most popular AM-FM methods using different filterbank configurations that includes Gabor, Equirriple and multi-scale directional designs. We compare the performance and robustness to Gaussian noise using synthetic FM image examples. We show that the multi-dimensional quasi-local method (QLM) with an equiripple filterbank gave the best results in terms of instantaneous frequency (IF) estimation. We then apply …

Beta-Amyloid Inhibition Of Alpha 7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors And Factors That Potentially Influence The Aî²/Nachr Interaction, Christopher L. Jacobsen
Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that manifests in the form of deficiencies in cognitive processes such as memory and learning. The pathological features of AD include hyperphosphorylated tau proteins that form neurofibrillary tangles as well as senile plaques composed primarily of the peptide β-amyloid (Aβ). When present in high concentrations in the brain, Aβ inhibits certain subtypes of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the hippocampus. The effects of Aβ in the hippocampus have proven to be neurotoxic, resulting in reduced functionality of nAChRs and the subsequent death of neurons in the cholinergic pathway. The early stages of …

Large-Scale Intrinsic Functional Connectivity And Attention In Schizophrenia, Michael Hunter
Large-Scale Intrinsic Functional Connectivity And Attention In Schizophrenia, Michael Hunter
Psychology ETDs
It has been well-established that sustained attention and executive functioning are core deficits in schizophrenia (SZ). Growing evidence suggests that such attentional impairments may reflect disruptions in dominant intrinsic networks (INs). Functional network connectivity (FNC), described as the dependency between multiple INs, has revealed dysfunction among key INs in people with SZ. The objective of the current study was to test the hypothesis that SCZ would exhibit less specialized cognitive processing and therefore decreased FNC between dominant INs, and that any disruptions in FNC would predict neuropsychological profiles of attention. Methods: Thirty-five patients with SZ and thirty-three healthy controls (HC) …

Sovereign Conflicts And Divided Loyalties: Native American Survivance In The Era Of Nuclear Modernity Story Of The Western Shoshone And Their Response To The Yucca Mountain High-Level Radioactive Waste Repository, Amy Sue Goodin
American Studies ETDs
This is the story of the ways in which the Western Shoshone have articulated identities amidst the ever-changing structures of governance that have defined U.S.-Native intergovernmental relations since the early days of U.S. efforts to colonize the American continent. However, the story focuses on nuclear colonialism. At issue is the specific nature of tribal participation in nuclear waste policy under emergent conditions of possibility as defined by U.S.-Native intergovernmental interactions (or a lack thereof). Ultimately, then, it is a story of how the Western Shoshone have articulated adaptive identities to assure survivance both physically and culturally to combat U.S. efforts …
Carnales: Transnational Affiliation In Chicano Vietnam War Protest, Kirsten Lustgarten
Carnales: Transnational Affiliation In Chicano Vietnam War Protest, Kirsten Lustgarten
American Studies ETDs
This thesis explores Chicano involvement in and protest against the Vietnam war through a lens of cultural production, particularly song lyrics. It identifies a tension between the fact that Chicanos had proportionally even more to lose from the war than did Anglos, and the fact that Chicano-authored antiwar song is unknown while Anglo-authored protest song is inextricable from the era in the popular imaginary. The study finds that Chicano antiwar song was scarce, and less explicit in tone than that composed by Anglos, and argues that this distinction was caused by a combination of assimilationist pressures and the dictates of …
Microbes, Individuals, And Medical Charity: Tuberculosis And The Remaking Of Liberal Individualism In Late 19th-Century Philadelphia, Carson Metzger
Microbes, Individuals, And Medical Charity: Tuberculosis And The Remaking Of Liberal Individualism In Late 19th-Century Philadelphia, Carson Metzger
American Studies ETDs
For most of Western history, tuberculosis was an incurable disease--its victims, destined to die. However, in late-19th century Philadelphia, changes in science, public health, and medical charity contributed to a remaking of the disease. Through the experiments of the bacteriological laboratory, and the commitment of governmental and private resources to tuberculosis treatment, scientists and physicians would come to tout the disease's curability. By the beginning of the 20th century, the disease was transformed into a curable entity caused, not by an uncontrollable force of nature, but by an ostensibly containable microbe, the tubercle bacillus. This dissertation argues that this transformation …
The Political Determinants Of Health: The Impact Of Political Factors On Black-White Infant Mortality In The United States, Rongal D. Nikora
The Political Determinants Of Health: The Impact Of Political Factors On Black-White Infant Mortality In The United States, Rongal D. Nikora
Political Science ETDs
Objective This exploratory research project considers the role that the political culture of individual U.S. states may play in determining variation in the countrys infant mortality rate. Specifically, do conventional and/or racialized measures of political culture help explain state-to-state variation, particularly in black infant mortality, as well as the longstanding mortality gap between infants born to black and white women? Conventional measures of political culture in this study include a state's past voting record in presidential elections, as well as how states are categorized under Elazar's (1966) typology of state civic culture (i.e., as moralistic, individualistic or traditionalistic). Racialized measures …

In this thesis we present novel approaches for the development of protease activity assays. Our focus of study is the protease assay development process on two types of characterized platforms: microspheres and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on flat surfaces. The surface preparation and conjugation process with biological components of interest is presented along …
Experimental Characterization And Modeling Of Aspect-Rario-Dependent Diffusion Of Nanocrystals In Nanochannels, Louis Tribby
Experimental Characterization And Modeling Of Aspect-Rario-Dependent Diffusion Of Nanocrystals In Nanochannels, Louis Tribby
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
The investigation of aspect-ratio-dependent diffusion and equilibrium partitioning of semiconductor nanocrystals in rectangular nanochannels has been undertaken. The nanocrystals are terminated with hydrocarbon ligands and suspended in toluene, considered an aprotic solvent. Time-dependent concentration profiles are measured as a function of distance from the channel entrance by the calibrated fluorescence intensity of the nanocrystals. Both the forward diffusion of the nanocrystals and their reverse diffusion are characterized. Nanocrystals are first allowed to diffuse forward from a reservoir into the nanochannels over a long period (\u2265 3 days) until the inlet concentration reaches a steady state. Subsequently, these nanocrystals are allowed …
Maternal Modulation Of The Experience Of Novelty On Offspring Hormonal Stress Reactivity, Sarah Dinces
Maternal Modulation Of The Experience Of Novelty On Offspring Hormonal Stress Reactivity, Sarah Dinces
Psychology ETDs
Background: Studies have shown that both maternal and non-maternal environmental influences affect the development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. It remains unclear how these influences jointly interact to program offspring HPA function. Here, we test the hypothesis that non-maternal environmental effects on offspring HPA function depend contextually on maternal self-stress regulation. Methods: To examine individual differences in maternal self-stress regulation, mothers basal circulating and evoked corticosterone (CORT) response were measured shortly after weaning. The effects of the non-maternal environment were assessed by employing both the neonatal and the early adulthood novelty exposure procedures. The neonatal novelty exposure procedure occurred from …
