The Development Of Academic Language Proficiency: Challenges For Middle School Immersion In Hong Kong And Xi'an, Stella Kong, Philip Hoare
International Education
This paper investigates the development of academic language proficiency through immersion in middle school programmes in Hong Kong and Xi’an. The study reveals that in both contexts students have exposure to complex academic language through teacher talk and textbooks; however, there is not sufficient support for students’ academic language use in writing. The paper discusses the possible causes and suggests how students can be helped to develop better academic language proficiency in these immersion contexts.

Background
Black men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States (US) are affected by HIV at disproportionate rates compared to MSM of other race/ethnicities. Current HIV incidence estimates in this group are needed to appropriately target prevention efforts.
Methods
From July 2009 to October 2010, Black MSM reporting unprotected anal intercourse with a man in the past six months were enrolled and followed for one year in six US cities for a feasibility study of a multi-component intervention to reduce HIV infection. HIV incidence based on HIV seroconversion was calculated as number of events/100 person-years. Multivariate proportional …

The 5-HT3A receptor homology model, based on the partial structure of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor from Torpedo marmorata, reveals an asymmetric ion channel with five portals framed by adjacent helical amphipathic (HA) stretches within the 114-residue loop between the M3 and M4 membrane-spanning domains. The positive charge of Arg-436, located within the HA stretch, is a rate-limiting determinant of single channel conductance (γ). Further analysis reveals that positive charge and volume of residue 436 are determinants of 5-HT3A receptor inward rectification, exposing an additional role for portals. A structurally unresolved stretch of 85 residues constitutes …

Reactin: Regulatory Activity Inference Of Transcription Factors Underlying Human Diseases With Application To Breast Cancer, Mingzhu Zhu, Chun-Chi Liu, Chao Cheng
Dartmouth Scholarship
Genetic alterations of transcription factors (TFs) have been implicated in the tumorigenesis of cancers. In many cancers, alteration of TFs results in aberrant activity of them without changing their gene expression level. Gene expression data from microarray or RNA-seq experiments can capture the expression change of genes, however, it is still challenge to reveal the activity change of TFs. Here we propose a method, called REACTIN (REgulatory ACTivity INference), which integrates TF binding data with gene expression data to identify TFs with significantly differential activity between disease and normal samples. REACTIN successfully detect differential activity of estrogen receptor (ER) between …

Laforin, encoded by a gene that is mutated in Lafora Disease (LD, OMIM 254780), is a modular protein composed of a carbohydrate-binding module and a dual-specificity phosphatase domain. Laforin is the founding member of the glucan-phosphatase family and regulates the levels of phosphate present in glycogen. Multiple reports have described the capability of laforin to form dimers, although the function of these dimers and their relationship with LD remains unclear. Recent evidence suggests that laforin dimerization depends on redox conditions, suggesting that disulfide bonds are involved in laforin dimerization. Using site-directed mutagenesis we constructed laforin mutants in which individual cysteine …

WRINKLED1 (AtWRI1) is a key transcription factor in the regulation of plant oil synthesis in seed and non-seed tissues. The structural features of WRI1 important for its function are not well understood. Comparison of WRI1 orthologs across many diverse plant species revealed a conserved 9 bp exon encoding the amino acids “VYL”. Site-directed mutagenesis of amino acids within the ‘VYL’ exon of AtWRI1 failed to restore the full oil content of wri1-1 seeds, providing direct evidence for an essential role of this small exon in AtWRI1 function. Arabidopsis WRI1 is predicted to have three alternative splice …

Electronic And Mechanical Properties Of Nano-Heterostructures From First Principles, Satyesh K. Yadav
Electronic And Mechanical Properties Of Nano-Heterostructures From First Principles, Satyesh K. Yadav
Doctoral Dissertations
Reducing the size of components to the nanoscale (e.g., in nano-heterostructures) gives rise to new possibilities. Nano-heterostructures are material systems involving at least two different materials with at least one of them having dimensions less than 100 nm. Such architectures have demonstrated great potential for diverse functionalities within a single nanostructure, which is nonexistent in the individual component materials. Nevertheless, it has been difficult to utilize their full potential due to a lack of understanding of the complex correlation between structure and properties. In this bifocal thesis, state-of-the-art first principles computations are employed to perform systematic studies of (1) the …

Comparison Of Computational Methods Developed To Address Depth-Variant Imaging In Fluorescence Microscopy, Muhammad Mizanur Rahman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In three-dimensional fluorescence microscopy, the image formation process is inherently depth variant (DV) due to the refractive index mismatch between imaging layers, which causes depth-induced spherical aberration (SA). In this study, we present a quantitative comparison among different image restoration techniques developed based on a DV imaging model for microscopy in order to assess their ability to correct SA and their impact on restoration. The imaging models approximate DV imaging by either stratifying the object space or image space. For the reconstruction purpose, we used regularized DV algorithms with object stratification method such as the Expectation Maximization (EM), Conjugate Gradient; …

Photoactivatable fluorophores switch from a nonemissive to an emissive state upon illumination at an activating wavelength and then emit after irradiation at an exciting wavelength. The interplay of such activation and excitation events can be exploited to switch fluorescence on in a defined region of space at a given interval of time. In turn, the spatiotemporal control of fluorescence translates into the opportunity to implement imaging and spectroscopic schemes that are not possible with conventional fluorophores. Specifically, photoactivatable fluorophores permit the monitoring of dynamic processes in real time as well as the reconstruction of images with subdiffraction resolution. These promising …

Mechanobiological Response Of Stem Cells Derived From The Periodontal Ligament And Dental Pulp To Compressive Loading, Anthony Nicholas Khoury
Open Access Theses
Among the debilitating disorders associated with the musculoskeletal system, osteoarthritis and osteogenesis are the most prevalent disorders. These diseases are commonplace among people throughout the world and related healthcare options do little to improve on the condition. While the causes are yet to be fully understood, novel approaches involving stem cell treatments are currently being evaluated. The understanding of metabolic, formation, and degradation processes is simply a stepping-stone leading to the formulation of an innovative treatment. The goal of this study was to assess the chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation potential of stem cells derived from two different cell lines in …

SHP2, encoded by PTPN11, is required for survival, proliferation and differentiation of various cell types1,2. Germ line activating mutations in PTPN11 cause Noonan Syndrome, while somatic PTPN11 mutations cause childhood myeloproliferative disease and contribute to some solid tumors. Recently, heterozygous inactivating mutations in PTPN11 were found in metachondromatosis, a rare inherited disorder featuring multiple exostoses, endochondromas, joint destruction and bony deformities3,4. The detailed pathogenesis of this disorder has remained unclear. Here, we used a conditional knockout allele (Ptpn11fl) and Cre recombinase (Cre) transgenic mice to delete Ptpn11 specifically in …

The Abundance And Biodiversity Of Arthropods In Biofuel Crops: Insects And Arachnids In Corn, Switchgrass And Native Mixed Grass Prairie Fields, Caitlin Kempski
Theses
Concerns about fossil fuel prices and harmful effects have prompted research and investment in biofuel development. Biofuels have the potential to provide a stable fuel source that reduces carbon emissions. However, the ecological impacts of different crop choices should be examined. Arthropod communities in corn and switchgrass monocultures and mixed grass prairie polycultures were examined to determine the impact of the crop choice on the arthropod communities. Results show that, when compared to corn and switchgrass fields, mixed grass prairie fields had higher values for arthropod biomass, number, size, the number of orders present, the number of individuals in each …

Entropy Applications In Industrial Engineering, Saeed Zamiri Marvizadeh
Entropy Applications In Industrial Engineering, Saeed Zamiri Marvizadeh
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Entropy is a fundamental measure of information content which has been applied in a wide variety of fields. We present three applications of entropy in the industrial engineering field: dispatching of Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGV), ranking and selection of simulated systems based on the mean performance measure, and comparison between random variables based on cumulative probability distributions.
The first application proposes three entropy-based AGV dispatching algorithms. We contribute to the body of knowledge by considering the consequence of potential AGV moves on the load balance of the factory before AGVs are dispatched. Kullback-Leibler directed divergence is applied to measure the …
Physiological And Psychological Measurement Of Sleep Disturbance In Female Trauma Survivors With Ptsd And Major Depression, Kimberly Borkowski Werner
Physiological And Psychological Measurement Of Sleep Disturbance In Female Trauma Survivors With Ptsd And Major Depression, Kimberly Borkowski Werner
Dissertations
Sleep disturbance is often reported after a traumatic event and is included in the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Subjective reports from trauma survivors have consistently indicated difficulties in sleep onset, sleep maintenance, overall quality and quantity of sleep. However, objective physiological research has yielded inconsistent findings in PTSD-related sleep impairment. Studies investigating subjective and objective assessments concordantly support a theory of sleep state misperception – subjective over-estimation of sleep disturbance – in PTSD. The majority of these previous investigations have been limited to male, veteran cohorts and have not accounted for …
