Renovation Of Ammonia Contaminated Produced Water Using Constructed Wetlands, Donald Beebe Aug 2013

Renovation Of Ammonia Contaminated Produced Water Using Constructed Wetlands, Donald Beebe

All Dissertations

Pilot-scale wetland treatment systems were designed and constructed to evaluate renovation of simulated oilfield produced water contaminated with ammonia (20 mg/L ammonia-N). A process-based pilot-scale constructed wetland was designed to meet specific biogeochemical conditions for conversion of ammonia to nitrogen gas through microbial nitrification and denitrification. The process-based constructed wetland treated the simulated produced water to meet stringent discharge requirements (less than 1.2 mg/L ammonia-N). Clinoptilolite, a zeolite mineral, was evaluated for use in constructed wetlands to increase ammonia sorption and nitrification activity. Clinoptilolite increased wetland ammonia sorption capacity and served as a microbial carrier for nitrifying bacteria when ranges …

All Dissertations

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been investigated in tissue engineering applications to provide in situ imaging, drug delivery, and tissue patterning, but direct and prolonged interaction between cells and MNPs can have adverse effects on cell function. Therefore, methods which reduce or limit the interaction of MNPs with cells, or utilize more biocompatible MNP-based strategies will improve upon the commonly used iron oxide MNPs. We investigated a variety of methods to improve upon the use of MNPS in tissue engineering.
Cell aggregates, or spheroids, have been used as tissue engineered building blocks that can closely mimic the native three-dimensional in vivo …

Regulation Of Anoikis By Oncogenic Pathways, Sun Hee Park Aug 2013

Regulation Of Anoikis By Oncogenic Pathways, Sun Hee Park

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Detachment of epithelial cells from matrix or attachment to an inappropriate matrix engages an apoptotic response known as anoikis, which prevents metastasis. Anoikis-resistance of tumor cells is critical for anchorage-independent growth and metastasis. Here we show two novel oncogenic pathways that confer resistance to anoikis in tumor cells. One pathway (chapter 2) signifies a new link between EMT and anoikis-resistance. In chapter 3, we present a new connection between inflammatory signaling pathways and anoikis-resistance. Cellular sensitivity to anoikis is compromised during the oncogenic epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), through various mechanisms. Chapter 2 introduces a novel mechanism (NRAGE/TBX2/p14ARF) that is induced upon …

The Evolution Of The Paleopolyploid Genome In Family Salicaceae, Eli Rodgers-Melnick Aug 2013

The Evolution Of The Paleopolyploid Genome In Family Salicaceae, Eli Rodgers-Melnick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Whole genome duplication is a recurrent phenomenon throughout the history of flowering plants, with at least 1 occuring in the history of each angiosperm lineage. However, following duplication the genome typically undergoes a period of increased structural rearrangements and gene loss, resulting in a diploidized genome with large stretches of syntenic regions resulting from the duplication. This process, termed fractionation, often exhibits biased patterns of gene retention, which appear to correspond with the putative connectedness of genes within biological networks. In this thesis, I explore the extent to which the same biases appear in duplicate genes from the most recent …

An Investigation Of Traveling-Wave Electrophoresis Using A Trigonometric Potential, James Vopal Aug 2013

An Investigation Of Traveling-Wave Electrophoresis Using A Trigonometric Potential, James Vopal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Traveling-wave electrophoresis, a technique for microfluidic separations in lab-on-achip devices, is investigated using a trigonometric model that naturally incorporates the spatial periodicity of the device. Traveling-wave electrophoresis can be used to separate high-mobility ions from low-mobility ions in forensic and medical applications, with a separation threshold that can be tuned for specific applications by simply choosing the traveling wave frequency. Our simulations predict plateaus in the average ion velocity verses the mobility, plateaus that correspond to Farey fractions and yield Devil's staircases for non-zero discreteness values. The plateaus indicate that ions with different mobilities can travel with the same average …

"Oh, You Are An Exception!" Academic Success And Black Male Students Resistance To Systemic Racism, Lacharles Travell Ward Aug 2013

"Oh, You Are An Exception!" Academic Success And Black Male Students Resistance To Systemic Racism, Lacharles Travell Ward

Theses

This study theorizes how Black male students narrate their experiences at a traditionally White institution (TWI). To date, research focusing on Black men in higher education highlights the continual struggles of Black men against racism (Feagin, Vera, & Imani, 1996; Harper, 2006, 2009, 2012; Smith, Yosso, & Solórzano, 2007); however, what remains to be extensively theorized is Black male academic excellence. Thus, I argue that it is vital to progressively broaden what we know about Black male students as intellectuals. In this study I forefront how Black male students articulate their intellectual identities and educational experiences on a traditionally White …

Traveling Wave Solution To Two-Dimensional Burgers-Korteweg-De Vries Equation, Xiaoqian Gong

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In this thesis, we study the Two-Dimensional Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries (2D-BKdV) equation by analyzing the equivalent Abel equation, which indicates that under some particular conditions, the 2D-BKdV equation has a unique bounded traveling wave solution. By using the theorem of contractive mapping, a traveling wave solution to the 2D-BKdV equation is expressed explicitly. In the end, the behavior of the proper solution of the 2D-BKdV equation is established by applying the comparison theorem of differential equations.
