Conservation Genetics And Population Status Of The Flame Chub, Hemitremia Flammea, Kathlina Frances Alford Aug 2013

Conservation Genetics And Population Status Of The Flame Chub, Hemitremia Flammea, Kathlina Frances Alford

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The southeastern United States has a rich geologic history that contributed to the evolution of an extremely diverse aquatic fauna throughout the region. The Flame Chub, Hemitremia flammea, is a brightly colored, spring endemic minnow species native to the Cumberland, Tennessee, and Coosa river drainages. In this study, the cytochrome-b gene region was analyzed for 230 individuals from 29 populations across the three drainages. Results from maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses recovered shallow divergence between the 31 haplotypes. AMOVA analyses indicated that most gene tic variation distributed within and between populations, not between drainages. Based on these results, this species …

Environmental impact plays an ever-increasing role in the industrial production of materials, and because of its importance, the scientific community is examining a wide variety of new materials that are more environmentally friendly. Bioplastics are characterized by the fact that the usual petrochemical resins (polypropylene, polyethylene etc.) are replaced by bio-sourced resins and the reinforcements (glass fibers, carbon fibers etc.) are replaced by natural fibers (bamboo, flax, cotton, etc.). Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer that is increasingly used in biomedical applications and in packaging. Additionally, bamboo is a promising source of fibers that could be used as reinforcement. …

Discovering Divergence: A Framework For Finding Unexpected Behavior Using Directed Exploration, Heath G. Roehr Aug 2013

Discovering Divergence: A Framework For Finding Unexpected Behavior Using Directed Exploration, Heath G. Roehr

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Systems that are written to achieve the same high level specifications can vary in subtle ways. Depending on a programmer's objective, using one variant of a program or algorithm over another may be beneficial, and this objective may change over time. However we do not have sufficient techniques to compare two different system variants side-by-side to find specific behavioral differences, particularly in the absence of source code. Assuming two system implementations take the same inputs and produce the same outputs or exhibit the same behavior under most conditions, we want to find input instances where the behavior diverges for a …

Multiple Motherhoods: An Examination Of Mother Status On Life Satisfaction And Psychological Distress, Kayla M. Pritchard Aug 2013

Multiple Motherhoods: An Examination Of Mother Status On Life Satisfaction And Psychological Distress, Kayla M. Pritchard

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Motherhood represents a status that has substantial cultural meaning. The ways in which people think about motherhood, however, tend to be limited to biology. Among partnered or married women, this study seeks to compare variations in motherhood by recognizing women as biological mothers, stepmothers, and double mothers. Double mothers are a previously unexamined category of motherhood that refers to women who are both biological and stepmothers. Using the National Survey of Fertility Barriers, I assess potential differences in life satisfaction and psychological distress across these three mother statuses and two types of non-mothers (voluntary childfree and involuntary childless women). Factors …

The Effect Of Temperature On The Reproductive Success Of Male Waterbugs (Belostoma Flumineum), Michael Philip Dmytriw Aug 2013

The Effect Of Temperature On The Reproductive Success Of Male Waterbugs (Belostoma Flumineum), Michael Philip Dmytriw

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Sexual selection theory predicts that the sex that shows a greater parental investment in the offspring should be limiting to the reproductive success of the opposite sex. Males of the giant waterbug Belostoma flumineum exhibit greater parental investment than females by providing all of the parental care for the eggs, which are firmly attached to their dorsal surface. While male backspace availability can be limiting to female reproductive success, it has previously been found to be more limiting during the spring than during the fall, due to newly emerged males being able to breed more quickly than newly emerged females. …

The Orphan Drug Act: How The Fda Unlawfully Usurped Market Exclusivity, Sumin Kim

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

The Board of KV Pharmaceutical bet the company on the success of Makena®, a pre-term birth drug. However, in the midst of a public outcry over the excessive pricing of Makena®, the FDA declared that it would not honor the market exclusivity that KV Pharmaceutical had obtained for Makena® under the Orphan Drug Act. As a result, KV Pharmaceutical filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This Note analyzes the situation under the lens of the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment. Specifically, I argue that market exclusivity for Makena® was private property and thus, the FDA unlawfully usurped KV Pharmaceutical’s private …

Symposium – What Real-World Criminal Cases Tell Us About Genetics Evidence, Deborah W. Denno Aug 2013

Symposium – What Real-World Criminal Cases Tell Us About Genetics Evidence, Deborah W. Denno

UC Law Journal

Rapid advances in genetic and neuroscience research over the past few decades have fueled a focus on how such information is viewed and used by the criminal justice system. Researchers at the University of Utah recently conducted an unprecedented experimental study indicating that psychopathic criminal offenders are more likely to receive lighter sentences if a judge was aware of genetic and neurobiological explanations for the offender’s psychopathy. This Article contends that the study’s conclusions derive from substantial flaws in the study’s design and methodology. The hypothetical case upon which the study is based captures just one narrow and unrepresentative component …

Symposium – Seeking Genomic Knowledge: The Case For Clinical Restraint, Wylie Burke, Susan Brown Trinidad, Ellen Wright Clayton Aug 2013

Symposium – Seeking Genomic Knowledge: The Case For Clinical Restraint, Wylie Burke, Susan Brown Trinidad, Ellen Wright Clayton

UC Law Journal

Genome sequencing technology provides new and promising tests for clinical practice, including whole genome sequencing, which measures an individual’s complete DNA sequence, and whole exome sequencing, which measures the DNA for all genes coding for proteins. These technologies make it possible to test for multiple genes in a single test, which increases the efficiency of genetic testing. However, they can also produce large amounts of information that cannot be interpreted or is of limited clinical utility. This additional information could be distracting for patients and clinicians, and contribute to unnecessary healthcare costs. The potential for genomic sequencing to improve care …

Anticipating Stream Ecosystem Responses To Climate Change: Toward Predictions That Incorporate Effects Via Land–Water Linkages, J. M. Davis, C. V. Baxter, E. J. Rosi-Marshall, J. L. Pierce, B. T. Crosby

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Climate change (CC) is projected to increase the frequency and severity of natural disturbances (wildfires, insect outbreaks, and debris flows) and shift distributions of terrestrial ecosystems on a global basis. Although such terrestrial changes may affect stream ecosystems, they have not been incorporated into predictions of stream responses to CC. Here, we introduce a conceptual framework to evaluate to what extent responses of streams to CC will be driven by not only changes in thermal and hydrologic regimes, but also alterations of terrestrial processes. We focused on forested water-sheds of western North America because this region is projected to experience …

Expert–Novice Differences In Mental Models Of Viruses, Vaccines, And The Causes Of Infectious Disease, Benjamin D. Jee, David H. Uttal, Amy N. Spiegel, Judy Diamond

World of Viruses

Humans are exposed to viruses everywhere they live, play, and work. Yet people’s beliefs about viruses may be confused or inaccurate, potentially impairing their understanding of scientific information. This study used semi-structured interviews to examine people’s beliefs about viruses, vaccines, and the causes of infectious disease. We compared people at different levels of science expertise: middle school students, teachers, and professional virologists. The virologists described more entities involved in microbiological processes, how these entities behaved, and why. Quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed distinctions in the cognitive organization of several concepts, including infection and vaccination. For example, some students and teachers …

Bifurcation And Chaos Of Nonlinear Vibro-Impact Systems, Yu Guo Aug 2013

Bifurcation And Chaos Of Nonlinear Vibro-Impact Systems, Yu Guo

Dissertations

Vibro-impact systems are extensively used in engineering and physics field, such as impact damper, particle accelerator, etc. These systems are most basic elements of many real world applications such as cars and aircrafts. Such vibro-impact systems possess both the continuous characteristics as continuous dynamical systems and discrete characteristics introduced by impacts at the same time. Thus, an appropriately developed discrete mapping system is required for such vibro-impact systems in order to simplify investigation on the complexity of motions. In this dissertation, a few vibro-impact oscillators will be investigated using discrete maps in order to understand the dynamics of vibro-impact systems. …

The Social Construction Of Deviance, Activism, And Identity In Women's Accounts Of Abortion, Mallary Allen Aug 2013

The Social Construction Of Deviance, Activism, And Identity In Women's Accounts Of Abortion, Mallary Allen

Dissertations

The mainstream abortion rights debate in the United States, its opposing factions popularly identified as pro-choice and pro-life, is reliant upon identifiable narratives of abortion's value to women and society and, alternately, its harms. This dissertation traces more than one hundred years of evolution of popular rhetoric surrounding the practice of elective termination of pregnancy in the U.S. and identifies the understandings of abortion and the women who have them which are most prominent in our culture today. This dissertation examines the ways in which women who have had abortions invoke the rhetoric of "sympathetic abortion" in making sense of …

A Force Of Nature: Molecular Mechanisms Of Mechanoperception In Plants, Gabriele B. Monshausen, Elizabeth S. Haswell Aug 2013

A Force Of Nature: Molecular Mechanisms Of Mechanoperception In Plants, Gabriele B. Monshausen, Elizabeth S. Haswell

Biology Faculty Research

The ability to sense and respond to a wide variety of mechanical stimuli-gravity, touch, osmotic pressure, or the resistance of the cell wall-is a critical feature of every plant cell, whether or not it is specialized for mechanotransduction. Mechanoperceptive events are an essential part of plant life, required for normal growth and development at the cell, tissue, and whole-plant level and for the proper response to an array of biotic and abiotic stresses. One current challenge for plant mechanobiologists is to link these physiological responses to specific mechanoreceptors and signal transduction pathways. Here, we describe recent progress in the identification …

Analyses Of Multivitamins In Nutraceuticals By Reverse Phase Hplc With Dad, Elsd And Ms, Hsiang-Chi Huang

All Theses

ABSTRACT
Vitamins are essential to human beings and support long-term healthy lifestyle. They exist widely in food, but in small amount. Hence, dietary supplements and fortified food products are more and more popular in the nutritional markets. According to the Infant Formula Act of 1980, the range of each of the nutrients should fall within a specific range or above the required minimum, so there is an increasing interest of accurate measurement of vitamins, particularly the B-group vitamins. However, traditional methods for vitamin B analyses are time-consuming and often in poor accuracy. As a result, rapid and reliable analytical methods …
