Type‐I Collagen Modeled As A Liquid Crystal, Alexander Thomas
Type‐I Collagen Modeled As A Liquid Crystal, Alexander Thomas
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Research Publications
Type-I collagen is found in numerous parts of the human body. This research has been focused on the macrostructures of type-I collagen and its implications on the physical properties of certain tissues. Furthermore, the self-assembly of the three α chains into the collagen triple helix has been studied in order to understand the biochemical pathway in which type-I collagen is produced.

Objective
Among older children with sickle cell anemia, leukocyte counts, hemoglobin, and reticulocytosis have previously been suggested as disease severity markers. Here we explored whether these blood parameters may be useful to predict early childhood disease severity when tested in early infancy, defined as postnatal ages 60–180 days.
Study Design
Data from fifty-nine subjects who were followed at Children’s National Medical Center’s Sickle Cell Program for at least three years was retrospectively analyzed. Comparisons were made between white blood cell counts, hemoglobin and reticulocyte levels measured at ages 60–180 days and the clinical course of sickle cell anemia during infancy …
Systems Of Accountability For Abusive Men In A Domestic Violence Context: The Nature Of Abuse, Limited Effectiveness And Intervention Strategy Improvement, Carla Cezario
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The domestic violence movement had extraordinary success in enlightening society on the scope, predominance, and consequences of battering, but more limited ability in successfully intervening and preventing the abuse of women by their intimate male partners. Taking this perspective, the present study offers four main goals: 1) describe the theories of domestic violence causation and the evolution of the current strategies for intervening with abusive men and why men are abusive; 2) evaluate current domestic violence interventions to understand the rationale has produce the development of these strategies; 3) Describe and critically analyze the limitations of current domestic violence intervention …

Propagation Of Thermo-Mechanical Waves In Deforming Nonlinear Viscoelastic Bodies, Lili Zhang
Propagation Of Thermo-Mechanical Waves In Deforming Nonlinear Viscoelastic Bodies, Lili Zhang
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This work studies the propagation of thermo-mechanical disturbances in bodies made of viscoelastic materials that might already be loaded such that they are undergoing large inhomogeneous time varying deformations. In the process of this study we develop the general equations governing the thermo-mechanical motion of such disturbances and ones for internally constrained systems, provide the general structure of the solution, match the solution to existing results for the special case of time harmonic plane waves in elastic bodies and in viscoelastic bodies under constant homogenous loading, and consider some special applications.
The results of this work should have applications in …
Habitual Chocolate Consumption May Increase Body Weight In A Dose-Response Manner, James A. Greenberg, Brian Buijsse
Habitual Chocolate Consumption May Increase Body Weight In A Dose-Response Manner, James A. Greenberg, Brian Buijsse
Publications and Research
Objective Habitual chocolate intake was recently found to be associated with lower body weight in three cross-sectional epidemiological studies. Our objective was to assess whether these cross-sectional results hold up in a more rigorous prospective analysis. Methods We used data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities cohort. Usual dietary intake was assessed by questionnaire at baseline (1987–98), and after six years. Participants reported usual chocolate intake as the frequency of eating a 1-oz (∼28 g) serving. Body weight and height were measured at the two visits. Missing data were replaced by multiple imputation. Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate …

Optimization Of Force Sensitivity In Q-Controlled Amplitude-Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy, Jongwoo Kim, Baekman Sung, Byung I. Kim, Wonho Jhe
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We present control of force sensitivity in Q-controlled amplitude-modulation atomic force microscopy (AM-AFM) that is based on the high-Q quartz tuning-fork. It is found that the phase noise is identical to the amplitude noise divided by oscillation amplitude in AM-AFM. In particular, we observe that while Q-control does not compromise the signal-to-noise ratio, it enhances the detection sensitivity because the minimum detectable force gradient is inversely proportional to the effective quality factor for large bandwidths, which is due to reduction of frequency noise. This work demonstrates Q-control in AM-AFM is a useful technique for enhancement of …

Direct Observation Of Self-Assembled Chain-Like Water Structures In A Nanoscopic Water Meniscus, Byung I. Kim, Ryan D. Boehm, Jeremy R. Bonander
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Sawtooth-like oscillatory forces generated by water molecules confined between two oxidized silicon surfaces were observed using a cantilever-based optical interfacial force microscope when the two surfaces approached each other in ambient environments. The humidity-dependent oscillatory amplitude and periodicity were 3-12 nN and 3-4 water diameters, respectively. Half of each period was matched with a freely jointed chain model, possibly suggesting that the confined water behaved like a bundle of water chains. The analysis also indicated that water molecules self-assembled to form chain-like structures in a nanoscopic meniscus between two hydrophilic surfaces in air. From the friction force data measured simultaneously, …

Tropical tree communities are shaped by local-scale habitat heterogeneity in the form of topographic and edaphic variation, but the life-history stage at which habitat associations develop remains poorly understood. This is due, in part, to the fact that previous studies have not accounted for the widely disparate sample sizes number of stems that result when trees are divided into size classes. We demonstrate that the observed habitat structuring of a community is directly related to the number of individuals in the community. We then compare the relative importance of habitat heterogeneity to tree community structure for saplings, juveniles and adult …

[1] In a field experiment at Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) designed to mimic the impact of a small-volume release of E10 (10% ethanol and 90% conventional gasoline), two plumes were created by injecting extracted groundwater spiked with benzene, toluene, and o-xylene, abbreviated BToX (no-ethanol lane) and BToX plus ethanol (with-ethanol lane) for 283 days. We developed a reactive transport model to understand processes controlling the fate of ethanol and BToX. The model was calibrated to the extensive field data set and accounted for concentrations of sulfate, iron, acetate, and methane along with …
The Role Of Wood Microsites At Timberline-Alpine Meadow Borders For Conifer Regeneration, Adelaide Chapman Johnson
The Role Of Wood Microsites At Timberline-Alpine Meadow Borders For Conifer Regeneration, Adelaide Chapman Johnson
Dissertations and Theses
This research aimed to determine whether wood microsites ("nurse logs"), which are regeneration sites in Pacific Northwest (PNW) subalpine forests, supported regeneration at timberline-alpine meadow borders. Upward advance of forests and conifer invasion into alpine meadows, which may be occurring in conjunction with climate warming, have gained worldwide attention. Successful alpine meadow seedling regeneration depends on suitable substrate availability, or microsites, for seedling establishment. To better understand factors associated with wood microsite occurrence, mechanisms of wood input were determined and four specific hypotheses were posed to assess: (1) seedling density and seedling survival; (2) growing season length, summer mean growing …

In recent years, Non-Point Source Pollution has been rising as a significant environmental issue. The sediment-laden water problem is causing serious impacts on river ecosystems not only in South Korea but also in most countries. The vegetative filter strip (VFS) has been thought to be one of the most effective methods to reduce the transport of sediment to down-gradient area. However, the effective width of the VFS first needs to be determined before VFS installation in the field. To provide an easy-to-use interface with a scientific VFS modeling engine, the Web GIS-based VFSMOD system was developed in this study. The …

Drug use and abuse presents a significant problem to individuals, families, and law enforcement in communities across the United States. Methamphetamine is a particular concern in one rural eastern Missouri county. Much work is being done in this county by multiple agencies to decrease methamphetamine production and use. Little attention, however, has been focused on prevention in the elementary schools. Substance use and experimentation may begin as early as 12 years old or even earlier. By initiating a proven drug prevention education curriculum before children begin to experiment with tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs, drug use may be delayed or …

Background. Recurrent ischemic stroke is associated with adverse neurological outcome in patients with atrial fibrillation. There is very scarce information regarding the neurological outcome of atrial fibrillation patients undergoing repeated systemic thrombolysis after early recurrent ischemic stroke. Clinical Case and Discussion. We describe a case of a 76-year-old woman with known paroxysmal atrial fibrillation who was admitted because of an acute right middle cerebral artery ischemic stroke and who underwent repeated systemic thrombolysis within 110 hours. The patient underwent systemic thrombolysis after the first ischemic stroke with almost complete neurological recovery. On the fourth day after treatment, an …

While the neural circuitry and physiology of the auditory system is well studied among vertebrates, far less is known about how the auditory system interacts with other neural substrates to mediate behavioral responses to social acoustic signals. One species that has been the subject of intensive neuroethological investigation with regard to the production and perception of social acoustic signals is the plainfin midshipman fish, Porichthys notatus, in part because acoustic communication is essential to their reproductive behavior. Nesting male midshipman vocally court females by producing a long duration advertisement call. Females localize males by their advertisement call, spawn and deposit …
