Calcium Remodeling Through Different Signaling Pathways In Heart Failure: Arrhythmogenesis Studies Of Pyk2, Dystrophin, And Β-Adrenergic Receptor Signaling, Di Lang
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Heart failure is a common clinical syndrome that ensues when the heart is no longer able to generate sufficient cardiac output to meet the demands of the body. It is one of the leading causes of death worldwide but with limited and non-ideal therapies at the moment. One reason behind this may be the complexity of significant alterations in multiple signaling pathways and concomitant structural and functional remodeling, especially Ca handling. Ca is critical in both the electrical and mechanical properties of cardiac myoctyes, and much is known about ionic currents and the normal excitation-contraction coupling process. In heart failure, …
Molecular Identification Of Nematode Gut Contents, Quinn Martin, Dr. Byron Adams
Molecular Identification Of Nematode Gut Contents, Quinn Martin, Dr. Byron Adams
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Species-specific food web relationships involving free-living microbivorous nematodes are not well established, yet critical to our understanding of their involvement in nutrient cycling and ecosystem function. Antarctic soil ecosystems are the simplest on earth and serve as a model system for exploring the role of biodiversity in ecosystem function. To establish which bacteria are involved in trophic relationships with nematodes, we surface-sterilized nematodes and extracted their DNA, including bacterial DNA from the gut contents of the nematodes. From this bacterial DNA we PCR amplified the 16S gene and sequenced the product in order to determine the identity of the gut …

Optimization Of Anti-Cancer Agents Discovered At Byu, Chris Cutler, Dr. Matt Peterson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The goal of this project was to prepare a library of adenine-based anticancer agents in order to help understand which properties of the molecules contribute to the anticancer activity. I worked in Dr. Peterson’s organic chemistry laboratory for the duration of 2009, synthesizing compounds for anticancer testing. Some were submitted to the NIH for screening against a large panel of cancer cell lines, while others were sent to a collaborator for similar testing. While the results of most of these tests are still forthcoming, the data we have received so far is promising. My work contributed to a publication in …

Meloidogyne nematodes are agricultural pests that cause approximately 5% of global crop loss each year. In order to develop more effective control strategies, a clearer image of how the many species of Meloidogyne are related is needed.
A Survey Of Dance Flies (Diptera: Empididae) In Mongolia, Paul Frandsen, Dr. C. Riley Nelson
A Survey Of Dance Flies (Diptera: Empididae) In Mongolia, Paul Frandsen, Dr. C. Riley Nelson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Dance flies from the super family Empidoidea (Diptera:Empididae, Hybotidae) were collected from western Mongolia in June and July 2009. Historical published records of Empididae in Mongolia along with unpublished, more recently collected records from the Selenge River Basin were compared with the samples from western Mongolia. Thirteen genera were identified from western Mongolia in 2009, with eight of these new for the country. Although 23 genera are now know for Empedoidea in Mongolia, only five were found in both the Selenge River and the 2009 collection from western Mongolia, suggesting distinct differences in faunal composition between the two areas.

IRF5 (interferon regulatory factor 5) is an integral protein in the innate immune response to viruses in humans. Once activated, IRF5 acts as a transcription factor which facilitates the production of inflammatory cytokines, interferons, and a host of other anti-viral agents in humans. To date, there are twelve documented splice variants of IRF5 in the human population. These variants range from minor deletions to drastic changes in the protein makeup of IRF5. A risk IRF5 haplotype is a person possessing alleles coding for these radically altered IRF5 mRNA (Kozyrev). A protective IRF5 hapolotype is a person possessing alleles coding for …

Cationic Steroid Antibiotics (CSAs) are potent innovative antimicrobial agents. In particular, CSA-13 has a very low minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 2 µg/mL. When dissolved in a solvent and combined with a commercial polymer, CSA-13 can be used to coat endotracheal (ET) tubes. Biofilm formation on ET tubes can cause ventilator assisted pneumonia and is potentially fatal. CSA-13-coated ET tubes are extremely effective in preventing biofilm formation. Testing in standard Mueller-Hinton broth, we have been able to prevent P. aeruginosa growth on tubes for up to 28 days. This is compared to silver-coated endotracheal tubes (which are …

Abundance Of Thymidine Kinase In Cancer Cells, Joshua Holm, Brady Bowen, Brady Samuel, Travis Lovell, Dr. Kim O'Neill
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Thymidine Kinase 1 (TK1) is a protein that is produced in much greater quantities by cancer cells in general than by normal cells (Abbasciano et al., 1991, p. 29; Hallek et al., 1997, p. 155; He et al., 2000, p. 139; Kuwa et al., 1996, p. 15). Such molecules are commonly referred to as cancer “biomarkers.” Such markers are commonly used to screen for and diagnose various cancers. Many of these biomarkers are often significantly elevated in the blood of cancer patients—helping to first lead to the detection of cancer.

Price, Promotion, And Availability Of Nutrition Information: A Descriptive Study Of A Popular Fast Food Chain In New York City, Corey Hannah Basch, Danna Ethan, Sonali Rajan
Publications and Research
Legislation in NYC requires chain restaurants to post calorie information on menu boards in an effort to help consumers make more informed decisions about food and beverage items they are purchasing. While this is a step in the right direction in light of the current obesity epidemic, there are other issues that warrant attention in a fast food setting, namely the pricing of healthy food options, promotional strategies, and access to comprehensive nutrition information. This study focused on a popular fast-food chain in NYC. The study’s aims were threefold: (1) to determine the cost differential between the healthiest meal item …

Multilocus Sequence Analysis Of Cercospora Spp. From Different Host Plant Families, Floreta Fiska Yuliarni, Wellyzar Sjamsuridzal, Iman Hidayat
Makara Journal of Science
Identification of the genus Cercospora is still complicated due to the host preferences often being used as the main criteria to propose a new name. We determined the relationship between host plants and multilocus sequence variations (ITS rDNA including 5.8S rDNA, elongation factor 1-α, and calmodulin) in Cercospora spp. to investigate the host specificity. We used 53 strains of Cercospora spp. infecting 12 plant families for phylogenetic analysis. The sequences of 23 strains of Cercospora spp. infecting the plant families of Asteraceae, Cucurbitaceae, and Solanaceae were determined in this study. The sequences of 30 strains of Cercospora spp. infecting the …

Screening And Integration Analysis Of Osdreb1a Bc4f2 And Bc5f1 Generations Of Transgenic Ciherang Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) For High-Salinity Tolerance, Dika Migi Priyono, Tri Joko Santoso, Andi Salamah
Makara Journal of Science
Salinity is one of a number of abiotic stresses that threaten rice production in Indonesia. To support food security programs, BB-Biogen has developed rice lines derived from OsDREB1A transformed Ciherang up to BC4F2 and BC5F1 generations. To verify the salinity tolerance and the stability of transgene integration, the BC4F2 and BC5F1 generations of Ciherang-OsDREB1A transgenic were screened to select high-salinity tolerant lines. Second, molecular analysis using the primers hptII-F/hptII-R and 35S-496-F/OsDREB1A-R was conducted to identify the existence and the stability of the transgene integration in the BC4F2 and BC5F1 generations. Screening 543 BC4F2 and BC5F1 Ciherang-OsDREB1A transgenic lines in a …

Makara Journal of Science
The assessment of the morphology and stingray species distribution of the Himantura uarnak species complex covers eight sampling sites in western and eastern Indonesia as many as 113 individuals. The observation of the reticulate pattern was accomplished by directly checking the dorsal side of the stingrays, and growth observations also carried out. The distribution patterns were analyzed using the principal component analysis (PCA), while the growth patterns were evaluated using correlation analyses. The reticulation patterns of the H. uarnak species complex were highly variable, and the distribution patterns based on the morphological parameters, species, and sex produced four groups. The …

Mir-23b/-27b Cluster Suppresses The Metastatic Phenotype Of Aggressive Prostate Cancer Cells, Reema A. Ishteiwy
Mir-23b/-27b Cluster Suppresses The Metastatic Phenotype Of Aggressive Prostate Cancer Cells, Reema A. Ishteiwy
Open Access Dissertations
MicroRNAs (miRs) are small, endogenous, non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expressing by inhibiting the stability and/or translation of complementary mRNA targets. Expression of miR-23b/-27b, which are encoded in tandem as a cluster on chromosome 9, are specifically downregulated in metastatic prostate cancer tissue samples compared to benign prostate. MiR-23b/-27b levels are also lower in aggressive prostate cancer cell lines compared to more indolent cells. We show miR-23b/-27b suppress migration and invasion of two aggressive human prostate cancer cell lines. Furthermore, inhibition of miR-23b/-27b increases the migration and invasion potential of a less aggressive prostate cancer cell line. Interestingly, we found …

Eelgrass Distribution In The Great Bay Estuary For 2012, Frederick T. Short
PREP Reports & Publications
Eelgrass in the Great Bay Estuary declined in both distribution and biomass between 2011 and 2012, continuing the long-term trend of eelgrass loss. In 2012, eelgrass was once again mainly present in the Great Bay itself with limited distribution in Portsmouth Harbor and Little Bay. Eelgrass distribution in Great Bay decreased 1.5% between 2011 and 2012 with no change in biomass. In Great Bay,eelgrass distribution has declined 36% since 1996 and biomass is a quarter of what it was in the early 1990s. Nuisance macroalgae in Great Bay continued to proliferate in 2012 and to impact eelgrass by smothering eelgrass …
