Actin Reorganization Events In Zyxin Mutant Cells, Stephen Filios, Dr. Marc Hansen Aug 2013

Actin Reorganization Events In Zyxin Mutant Cells, Stephen Filios, Dr. Marc Hansen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Cell migration is an important part of understanding how cancer affects the body. Benign tumors are non-migratory, and can be removed from a patient surgically. Once cancer cells start to migrate, or metastasize, the cancer is considered malignant. As a result, cancer spreads to other parts of the body. This research looked at the process by which epithelial cells become migratory, known as epithelial-mesenchymal transition or EMT.

Programming Sketches: A Bricolage Approach To Teaching Computer Programming In Design Education, Juhong Park Aug 2013

Programming Sketches: A Bricolage Approach To Teaching Computer Programming In Design Education, Juhong Park

Learn X Design Conference Series

Many architecture schools have started to teach computer programming as part of their design education. Their main pedagogies follow a conventional computer science approach, which has a high failure rate and is less effective for novice learners. This paper describes a novel approach to developing a curriculum, "Programming Sketches", to teach computer programming to architecture students in the context of design education. A bricolage-based approach with an atelier learning environment was explored. Instead of focusing on learning the knowledge of computer programming language, students were prompted to develop their own ways of transforming design thinking into a programming structure with …

Chronic Cadmium Exposure Stimulates Sdf-1 Expression In An Erα Dependent Manner, Esmeralda Ponce, Natalie B. Aquino, Maggie Louie Aug 2013

Chronic Cadmium Exposure Stimulates Sdf-1 Expression In An Erα Dependent Manner, Esmeralda Ponce, Natalie B. Aquino, Maggie Louie

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Cadmium is an omnipotent environmental contaminant associated with the development of breast cancer. Studies suggest that cadmium functions as an endocrine disruptor, mimicking the actions of estrogen in breast cancer cells and activating the receptor to promote cell growth. Although acute cadmium exposure is known to promote estrogen receptor-mediated gene expression associated with growth, the consequence of chronic cadmium exposure is unclear. Since heavy metals are known to bioaccumulate, it is necessary to understand the effects of prolonged cadmium exposure. This study aims to investigate the effects of chronic cadmium exposure on breast cancer progression. A MCF7 breast cancer cell …

Pitfalls With The Use Of Enhancement Ratios Or Normalized Excess Mixing Ratios Measured In Plumes To Characterize Pollution Sources And Aging, Robert J. Yokelson, Meinrat O. Andreae, S. K. Akagi Aug 2013

Pitfalls With The Use Of Enhancement Ratios Or Normalized Excess Mixing Ratios Measured In Plumes To Characterize Pollution Sources And Aging, Robert J. Yokelson, Meinrat O. Andreae, S. K. Akagi

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Normalized excess mixing ratios (NEMRs), also known as enhancement ratios, are a common way to characterize plumes of pollution in atmospheric research. As single-source pollutant plumes disperse in the atmosphere, they are diluted by mixing with the adjacent background air. Changes in the composition of this background air can cause large changes to the NEMR that is subsequently measured by remote-sensing, airborne, or ground-based instruments. This scenario is common when boundary layer plumes enter the free troposphere and could also impact long-range transport or plumes near the top of the troposphere. We provide a context for these issues and an …

Effects Of Interleukin-6, Interleukin-1, And Tumor Necrosis Factor On Adrenal Steroid Secretions, Brenda Mickelson Crawford, Dr. Allan M. Judd Aug 2013

Effects Of Interleukin-6, Interleukin-1, And Tumor Necrosis Factor On Adrenal Steroid Secretions, Brenda Mickelson Crawford, Dr. Allan M. Judd

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and interleukin- I (IL- 1) are cytokines released in response to infection in the body. One signal of infection is lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of the outer coat of grain negative bacterial cells. When bacteria die, LPS circulates in the blood and stimulates the immune system to release IL- 1, IL-6, and TNF. Septic shock is a syndrome in which LPS stimulates the release of large amounts of cytokines, causing adverse effects such as severe hypotension (low blood pressure), rashes, fever, edema, and finally multiple organ failure, including the heart.

Graphstore: A Distributed Graph Storage System For Big Data Networks, Venkataswamy Martha Aug 2013

Graphstore: A Distributed Graph Storage System For Big Data Networks, Venkataswamy Martha

Theses and Dissertations

Networks, such as social networks, are a universal solution for modeling complex problems in real time, especially in the Big Data community. While previous studies have attempted to enhance network processing algorithms, none have paved a path for the development of a persistent storage system. The proposed solution, Graphstore, provides an efficient and scalable graph management system for giant networks using Hadoop, a widely accepted distributed big data processing framework. Unlike the existing graph processing systems on Hadoop, the GraphStore offers a persistency through which query processing modules can be implemented. There arise several challenges with this study, such as …

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon-Metabolic Network In Mycobacterium Vanbaalenii Pyr-1, Ohgew Kweon

Theses and Dissertations

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of toxic compounds, which consist of two or more fused benzene rings. Due to their ecotoxic, mutagenic, and in some cases carcinogenic properties, sixteen PAHs are on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and European Union lists of priority pollutants to be monitored in the environment. Of particular interest are high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs with four or more benzene rings, due to their human carcinogenicity and persistent in the environment. Microbial metabolic activity represents the primary process of biodegradation and bioremediation of PAHs in the environment and has been evaluated as a promising …

Narrative At Risk: Accident And Teleology In American Culture, 1963-2013, Dustin R. Iler Aug 2013

Narrative At Risk: Accident And Teleology In American Culture, 1963-2013, Dustin R. Iler

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Accident in fiction is always inevitable. When a character in a novel suffers a car accident, for example, the accident is the effect of the author's intentions, and therefore it is not accidental. The words and images that constitute the meanings and events of the text do not change. The accidents in the narrative always happen the same way, reading after rereading. Drawing from this observation, the question that Narrative at Risk attempts to answer is, in its simplest iteration: how can narrative accurately represent accident when its textual representation is not subject to the effects of accident? I ask …

Dissecting The Mechanisms And The Nutritional Requirements Of The Expansion Of Normal And Tumorigenic Intestinal Stem Cell Lineages In Drosophila Melanogaster, Wen-Chih Lee Aug 2013

Dissecting The Mechanisms And The Nutritional Requirements Of The Expansion Of Normal And Tumorigenic Intestinal Stem Cell Lineages In Drosophila Melanogaster, Wen-Chih Lee

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Organisms are constantly challenged by injury and senescence. To replenish lost cells, adult tissue must contain a cellular reserve to maintain homeostasis. For example, adult stem cells exhibit two unique properties, self-renewal and potency, that make them well suited for this role. Tight regulatory control of stem cell properties is critical to maintain homeostatic balance; misregulation often leads to tumors or diseases. Recently, homeostasis of the intestinal epithelium has been shown to depend on a population of molecular defined intestinal stem cells: ISCs) in both Drosophila and mammals. However, the regulatory mechanisms controlling ISC behaviors remain poorly defined. We took …

The C Terminus Of Ftsz Regulates Ftsz Assembly Dynamics And Is Required For Bacillus Subtilis Cell Division, Pj Buske Aug 2013

The C Terminus Of Ftsz Regulates Ftsz Assembly Dynamics And Is Required For Bacillus Subtilis Cell Division, Pj Buske

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Bacterial cell division is initiated by the assembly of the tubulin homolog FtsZ into a ring: Z ring) at the nascent division site. Once formed, the Z ring serves as a scaffold for recruitment of the division machinery and helps provide some of the constrictive force for cytokinesis. In vitro FtsZ undergoes GTP-dependent assembly where individual subunits form single-stranded protofilaments and laterally-associated filament bundles. How the filamentous FtsZ structures observed in vitro translate into the behavior of the Z ring in vivo remains a fundamental question. In this dissertation I establish important roles for the previously uncharacterized FtsZ C-terminal domains …

Electrochemical Behavior And Content Determination Of Paeonol At Poly Sudan Ⅲ Modified Electrode, Yan-Jie Zheng, Ai-Lin Liu, Yun Lei, Xin-Hua Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

The poly SudanⅢ modified electrode was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)and cyclic voltammetry (CV), while the electrochemical behavior of paeonol was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The result shows that the poly Sudan Ⅲ modified electrode exhibits excellent electrocatalytic effect on the oxidation of paeonol. The peak currents of differential pulse voltammetry are linear to the paeonol concentrations over the range of 3.0*10-7 ~ 2.2*10-5 mol·L-1. The detection limit has been estimated to be 5.0*10-8 mol·L-1. This method can be used for determination of paeonol content in real sample with satisfactory results.
