Pressure Swing Membrane Absorption Process For Separation Of Low Temperature Post-Shift Reactor Syngas, John Chau Aug 2013

Pressure Swing Membrane Absorption Process For Separation Of Low Temperature Post-Shift Reactor Syngas, John Chau

Dissertations

This thesis is concerned with a cyclic pressure swing membrane absorption process (PSMAB) for separation of the feed gas mixture containing —40% CO2-He balance using pure ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([bmim][DCA]), and its solution containing poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer Gen 0 primarily with a dry feed gas. An advanced pressure swing membrane absorption process is developed to produce purified He as a surrogate for H2 at a high pressure from simulated low- temperature shifted syngas for different membrane modules. The PSMAB process also simultaneously produces a highly purified CO2 stream containing bulk of the CO2 in …

An Analysis Of The Constitutional Court Ruling On The Annulment Of The Provisions On Coastal Water Concessions (Hp-3), M. Riza Damanik Aug 2013

An Analysis Of The Constitutional Court Ruling On The Annulment Of The Provisions On Coastal Water Concessions (Hp-3), M. Riza Damanik

Indonesia Law Review

After the annulment of the Coastal Water Concessions (HP-3) in 16 June 2011, traditional fisher folk organization leaders found a great fighting spirit to further follow-up the Constitutional Court Ruling to support their daily lives. For those who are being “evicted” from their living space (the coastal waters), they want to reclaim their rights through constitutional ways. Likewise, those who (feel to) have lost their existence as Indonesian traditional fisher folk are impatient to find out whether there is a breakthrough in the Constitutional Court Ruling that can restore the fisher folk’s family way of life. The ruling itself was …

Community Power From Hydropower Systems: A Capacity-Building Project In Bangang, Cameroon, Patrick Pawletko Aug 2013

Community Power From Hydropower Systems: A Capacity-Building Project In Bangang, Cameroon, Patrick Pawletko

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Energy is one of the most vital resources for the socioeconomic development of any community. Cameroon has the second greatest potential for hydroelectric production in sub-Saharan Africa; however, a mere 2.1% of that potential is developed, and less than 12% of Cameroonians have access to electricity. In the village of Bangang, there are four small hydropower projects in various stages of development. These have the potential to provide 300 kW of renewable energy to the local populace. Development of these hydropower systems has begun with two fully operational turbines, but the projected capacity has yet to be achieved. The current …

A Robot With A Suspended Load: The Statistical Relationship Between Energy Cost And Mass Center Motion, Xingye Da Aug 2013

A Robot With A Suspended Load: The Statistical Relationship Between Energy Cost And Mass Center Motion, Xingye Da

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

In this research, the objective is to reduce energy (or power) consumption for a legged robot and demonstrate a correlation between energy (or power) consumption and center of mass (CoM) motion. The approach used is to experimentally measure and analyze the power consumption and center of mass motion of a legged robot carrying an elastically suspended load. A high-speed motion-tracking camera system was used to capture the robot body and load trajectories, and an analog-to-digital converter was used to record the robot’s average power. By analyzing the frequency content of the trajectories, we found that the center of mass dynamics …

Trade Liberalisation And Global-Scale Forest Transition, Rafael González-Val, Fernando Pueyo Aug 2013

Trade Liberalisation And Global-Scale Forest Transition, Rafael González-Val, Fernando Pueyo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this paper, we develop a theoretical model that provides an additional explanation for the forest transition based on a trade liberalisation scenario. Furthermore, in contrast with most explanations, in which the forest transition can only take place at a local level at the expense of other areas, ours is capable of supporting such phenomenon at a worldwide level. We introduce a renewable natural resource (wood), used as an input by manufacturing firms, in a framework with economic geography foundations: transport costs affect the distribution of firms between countries. In a general equilibrium, the results reproduce the forest transition at …

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Prevalence Of Vlfs In Children Among Children Of Foreign-Born Mothers, John Cook Aug 2013

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Prevalence Of Vlfs In Children Among Children Of Foreign-Born Mothers, John Cook

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This research examined VLFS in children among households with foreign-born (FB) mothers compared to US-born mothers through three research questions: Is mother’s foreign-born status (FBS) associated with VLFS in children, and can association be explained by mothers’ socio-demographic characteristics? Are FB mothers more or less likely to receive nutrition or non-nutrition assistance benefits, or work for pay than US-born mothers? Do mothers’ FBS, or protective/risk factors associated with FBS, modify associations of negative economic shocks and hardships with VLFS in children? Data are on approximately 44,000 mother-child (ages<48 Mos.) dyads collected from household surveys administered under a "sentinel surveillance" system over 1998-2012 at teaching hospitals and clinics in seven US cities. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models tested study hypotheses. Mothers' FBS is strongly positively associated with VLFS in children after controlling for available risk and protective factors. FB mothers are less likely to receive SNAP and non-nutrition assistance (TANF, LIHEAP or housing subsidies), but more likely to receive WIC and to be employed than US-born mothers. FB mothers are no more likely to report negative reasons for not receiving SNAP or TANF, or losing jobs or decreasing work hours than US-born, and reported "immigration concerns" rarely. No need/chose not to participate are most frequently reported reasons for not receiving SNAP and TANF; pregnancy/maternity leave and "market conditions" for lost jobs and decreased work hours. Economic shocks and hardships are positively associated with VLFS in children, but Mothers' FBS does not interact with shocks and hardships to modify those associations.

Childhood Externalizing Behavior Problems, Maternal Depression, And Father Involvement In Low-Income African American Families, Sara Johns Aug 2013

Childhood Externalizing Behavior Problems, Maternal Depression, And Father Involvement In Low-Income African American Families, Sara Johns

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Data indicate that up to 25% of preschoolers are exhibiting clinical levels of externalizing behaviors. Among children in at-risk populations, such as those attending Head Start preschools, estimates of clinical levels of externalizing behavior problems are as high as 30%. Studies of early childhood externalizing behavior problems indicate the potential for stability of elevated externalizing behaviors over time and the association of these behaviors with a variety of negative outcomes. Maternal depression and father involvement may be important predictors of externalizing behavior. The current study investigated the nature of the relationship between maternal depression, father involvement, and child externalizing behaviors …

Genomic Investigation Into Strain Heterogeneity And Pathogenic Potential Of The Emerging Gastrointestinal Pathogen Campylobacter Ureolyticus, Susan Bullman, Alan Lucid, Roy D. Sleator, Brigid Lucey, Et. Al. Aug 2013

Genomic Investigation Into Strain Heterogeneity And Pathogenic Potential Of The Emerging Gastrointestinal Pathogen Campylobacter Ureolyticus, Susan Bullman, Alan Lucid, Roy D. Sleator, Brigid Lucey, Et. Al.

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

The recent detection and isolation of C. ureolyticus from patients with diarrhoeal illness and inflammatory bowel diseases warrants further investigation into its role as an emerging pathogen of the human gastrointestinal tract. Regarding the pathogenic mechanisms employed by this species we provide the first whole genome analysis of two C. ureolyticus isolates including the type strain. Comparative analysis, subtractive hybridisation and gene ontology searches against other Campylobacter species identifies the high degree of heterogenicity between C. ureolyticus isolates, in addition to the identification of 106 putative virulence associated factors, 52 of which are predicted to be secreted. Such factors encompass …

A Nuclear Variant Of Gdf5 May Present Novel Insights On Arthritis Formation, Michael Baldwin, Dr. Laura Bridgewater Aug 2013

A Nuclear Variant Of Gdf5 May Present Novel Insights On Arthritis Formation, Michael Baldwin, Dr. Laura Bridgewater

Journal of Undergraduate Research

More than 40 million Americans suffer from the pains of arthritis. Arthritis is characterized by joint inflammation and cartilage deterioration (3). For many years growth differentiation factor 5 (Gdf5) has been associated with cartilage formation and maintenance (4, 1). Recently, a new variant of Gdf5 was discovered in the nucleus. Nuclear Gdf5 (nGdf5) presents a new mechanism by which Gdf5 regulates cartilage development and preservation. The long-term purpose of my research was aimed at learning the specific function of nGdf5 and determining its regulatory pathway. Understanding the role of nGdf5 would provide new information on cartilage breakdown and could establish …

A Survey Of Reproductive Biology Of Zenarchopterus Dispar In Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam, Tu Tran, Dr. Mark Belk

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Different selective environments could often predict life-history strategies (sensu Endler 1986). Resource levels of the environments strongly affect fitness and evolutionary stable strategies of species (Patrick and Pierre 1993). Similarly, predators also have a major effect on the life history of fish populations. The fish population from the predator’s area attained maturity at a smaller size, produced more, and smaller offspring relative to populations from predator-free environments (Johnson and Belk 2001).

Molecular Modeling And Dynamics: Development Of A Model For The Glcosphingolipid Gt1b, Dustin Danowski, David Busath Aug 2013

Molecular Modeling And Dynamics: Development Of A Model For The Glcosphingolipid Gt1b, Dustin Danowski, David Busath

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Botulinum Neurotoxin (BoNT) is currently being widely researched a a possible treatment for many medical conditions, as well as for cosmetic purposes. However, the mechanism describing how this family of toxins interact with their receptors to cause endocytosis is not well understood. We have developed a model of the GT1b ganglioside receptor of BoNT that may be used for Molecular Modeling and Dynamics simulations. The development of such a model is necessary to understand the mechanism of BoNT endocytosis, which then helps us determine possible uses and dangers of the toxin as a medical treatment. We had planned to complete …

Identification Of Insertion Points Of The Macrophage Fas-Induced Apoptosis (Mafia) Transgene, Robert E. Brown Iii, Dr. Sandra Burnett Aug 2013

Identification Of Insertion Points Of The Macrophage Fas-Induced Apoptosis (Mafia) Transgene, Robert E. Brown Iii, Dr. Sandra Burnett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Without site direction, transgenes integrate randomly into the genome of target cells. The transgene used in macrophage fas-induced apoptosis (Mafia) mice was randomly incorporated and indications of multiple insertion sites were observed. Our goal in performing this study was to detect the exact insertion point of the transgene so as to ultimately develop a genetic test to verify expression of the transgene in Maifa mice. In Figure 1 the premise of our experimental design is explained. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a scientific technique that is used to amplify a specific segment of DNA. To determine the insertion points of …

Assessing The Effects Of Primer Specificity On Eliminating Numt Co-Amplification In Dna Barcoding, Matthew Moulton, Dr. Michael Whiting Aug 2013

Assessing The Effects Of Primer Specificity On Eliminating Numt Co-Amplification In Dna Barcoding, Matthew Moulton, Dr. Michael Whiting

Journal of Undergraduate Research

DNA barcoding is a method of species identification based on sequencing a short mitochondrial DNA fragment of Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI). A database of over 500,000 of these COI fragments, known as “barcodes,” has been established for nearly 38,000 species and is currently being used to help rapidly assign individuals to known species and highlight potential new species. However, the ability for DNA barcoding to correctly diagnose species is limited by the presence of nuclear mitochondrial pseudogenes (numts). Numts can be co-amplified with the mitochondrial ortholog when using universal primers, which can lead to incorrect species identification and an overestimation …

Orca Report, Tom Beckstead, Dr. Jack W. Sites Jr.

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Snakes of the Neotropical subfamily Dipsadinae are poorly known from both ecological and phylogenetic perspectives, despite unique feeding adaptations and bizarre diets. Some of these snakes specialize on snails and slugs (ecologists refer to them as “goo eaters”), and they have a unique dentition and jaw structure that permits them to extract gastropod snails from their shells. Others have enlarged rear fangs, are mildly venomous, and prey on ectothermal vertebrates such as frogs, frog eggs, and lizards (Fig. 1).

Does Snap-25 Act As A V-Snare?, Nathan La Monica, Dr. Dixon Woodbury Aug 2013

Does Snap-25 Act As A V-Snare?, Nathan La Monica, Dr. Dixon Woodbury

Journal of Undergraduate Research

SNAP-25, a protein that is found abundantly in the brain, is a key player in the process of releasing neurotransmitters. Vesicles, or small spheres of lipid membranes, contain neurotransmitters and have numerous proteins that extend outward from the vesicle. To release the neurotransmitters proteins on the vesicle bind with proteins on the pre-synaptic membrane causing the fusion of the two membranes. SNAP-25 along with Syntaxin (membrane bound protein) and Synaptobrevin (vesicle bound protein) work together to form a complex called the SNARE complex (Bowen, 2004). The current theory on how this complex works is that SNAP-25 has to be bound …

Function Of Novel Nuclear Variant Bone Morphogenetic Protein (Nbmp2), Alina Schmidt, Dr. Laura C. Bridgewater

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Bmp2 is an important growth factor that regulates many stages of development including the development of the heart, muscle, and bone. A novel nuclear variant of BMP2 was discovered before my addition to the lab and studies began to determine nBMP2’s function. Of main importance to my project was the creation of nBMP2 chimeric mice.
