Differences In Learning Outcomes Between Medical Students From Urban And Rural Areas, Yeu-Jhy Chang, Shu-Chung Lii, Ching-Ming Liu, Chien-Da Huang, Ji-Tseng Fang
Journal of Medical Education
Purpose: Learning resources differ between urban and rural areas. We explored the factors that could affect the learning outcomes of medical students from urban and rural areas to guide the selection of medical students and the innovation of related curricula in high schools and medical schools. Methods: From 2003 to 2009, 653 medical students from urban and rural areas enrolled at the School of Medicine, Chang Gung University, were recruited in this study to compare their different characteristics, academic performance, and behavioral records. Urban areas were defined as those encompassing high school addresses located in five cities directly under the …
Androgen Activity And Markers Of Inflammation Among Men In Nhanes Iii, Mary Schooling
Androgen Activity And Markers Of Inflammation Among Men In Nhanes Iii, Mary Schooling
Publications and Research
Objectives
Inflammation contributes to chronic diseases. Lower serum testosterone among men is associated with less inflammation, yet immune defense is thought to trade-off against reproduction with androgens adversely affecting immune function. Anti-androgens are effective at castrate levels of serum testosterone, suggesting serum testosterone may not capture all androgen activity. The association of two androgen biomarkers with key markers of inflammation was examined.
Methods
The adjusted association of serum testosterone and androstanediol glucuronide with Creactive protein, white blood cell, granulocyte and lymphocyte count, fibrinogen and hemoglobin, as a control outcome because testosterone administration raises hemoglobin, were examined in a nationally representative …

Visual Attention And The Neuroimage Bias, Denise A. Baker, N. J. Schweitzer, Evan F. Risko, Jillian M. Ware
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Several highly-cited experiments have presented evidence suggesting that neuroimages may unduly bias laypeople’s judgments of scientific research. This finding has been especially worrisome to the legal community in which neuroimage techniques may be used to produce evidence of a person’s mental state. However, a more recent body of work that has looked directly at the independent impact of neuroimages on layperson decision-making (both in legal and more general arenas), and has failed to find evidence of bias. To help resolve these conflicting findings, this research uses eye tracking technology to provide a measure of attention to different visual representations of …
Pharmaceutical Efficacy: The Illusory Legal Standard , Jonathan J. Darrow
Pharmaceutical Efficacy: The Illusory Legal Standard , Jonathan J. Darrow
Washington and Lee Law Review
The very long and expensive process of new drug research and development might suggest to observers that the efficacy standard for drugs is elevated and substantial, but this is not the case. Under the U.S. Federal Food, Drug, and Co smetic Act, new drug approval merely requires that there be “substantial evidence that the drug will have the effect it purports or is represented to have.” While the evidence of effectiveness must therefore be substantial, the efficacy attested to by that evidence need not surpass any particular threshold (other than zero), thus allowing drugs with de minimis efficacy to be …

RGD peptides has been used to detect cell surface integrin and direct clinical effective therapeutic drug selection. Herein we report that a quick one step detection of cell surface marker that was realized by a specially designed NiFe-based magnetic biosensing cell chip combined with functionalized magnetic nanoparticles. Magnetic nanoparticles with 20-30 nm in diameter were prepared by coprecipitation and modified with RGD-4C, and the resultant RGD-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles were used for targeting cancer cells cultured on the NiFe-based magnetic biosensing chip and distinguish the amount of cell surface receptor-integrin. Cell lines such as Calu3, Hela, A549, CaFbr, HEK293 and HUVEC …

Penetration of solar radiation in the ocean is determined by the attenuation coefficient (K-d()). Following radiative transfer theory, K-d is a function of angular distribution of incident light and water's absorption and backscattering coefficients. Because these optical products are now generated routinely from satellite measurements, it is logical to evolve the empirical K-d to a semianalytical K-d that is not only spectrally flexible, but also the sun-angle effect is accounted for explicitly. Here, the semianalytical model developed in Lee et al. (2005b) is revised to account for the shift of phase function between molecular and particulate scattering from the short …

Glutaminyl cyclase (QC) catalyzes the cyclization of N-terminal glutamine residues into pyroglutamate. This post-translational modification extends the half-life of peptides and, in some cases, is essential in binding to their cognate receptor. Due to its potential role in the post-translational modification of tick neuropeptides, we report the molecular, biochemical and physiological characterization of salivary gland QC during the prolonged blood feeding of the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) and the gulf-coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum). QC sequences from I. scapularis and A. maculatum showed a high degree of amino acid identity to each other and other arthropods and …

Computational Study Of The Cyclization Of 5-Hexenyl, 3-Oxa-5-Hexenyl And 4-Oxa-5-Hexenyl Radicals, Albert Matlin, Matthew C. Leyden
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The intramolecular cyclization of 5-hexenyl radicals continues to be an important synthetic method for the construction of five-membered rings. The synthetic utility arises from the high degree of regioselectivity to give predominantly cyclopentyl products in high yield under mild conditions. Recently we reported product cyclization studies on 4-oxa perturbed 5-hexenyl radical. In this paper we report our results from a computational study (UB3LYP and UCCSD(T)) of the cyclization of a series of 5-hexenyl and 3- and 4-oxa-5-hexenyl radicals. Three highly conserved cyclization transitions states (exo-chair, exo-boat and endo-chair) were located for 10 acyclic radicals. Activation en-ergies …

Identifying drivers of contact rates among individuals is critical to understanding disease dynamics and implementing targeted control measures. We studied the interaction patterns of 149 female elk (Cervus canadensis) distributed across five different regions of western Wyoming over three years, defining a contact as an approach within one body length (∼2 m). Using hierarchical models that account for correlations within individuals, pairs, and groups, we found that pairwise contact rates within a group declined by a factor of three as group sizes increased 33-fold. Per capita contact rates, however, increased with group size according to a power function, such that …

Cognitive Task Analysis-Based Training: A Metaanalysisof Studies, Colby Tofel-Grehl, David F. Feldon
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Cognitive task analysis (CTA) is enjoying growing popularity in both research and practice as a foundational element of instructional design. However, there exists relatively little research exploring its value as a foundation for training through controlled studies. Furthermore, highly individualized approaches to conducting CTA do not permit broadly generalizable conclusions to be drawn from the findings of individual studies. Thus, examining the magnitude of observed effects across studies from various domains and CTA practitioners is essential for assessing replicable effects. This study reports the findings from a meta-analysis that examines the overall effectiveness of CTA across practitioners and settings in …

Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right: Implications Of The Sex Discrimination Present In Same-Sex Marriage Exclusions For The Next Supreme Court Same-Sex Marriage Case, Catherine Jean Archibald
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This year was a historic time in the gay rights movement. While the nation held its collective breath, the Supreme Court deliberated over the questions of whether same-sex couples have constitutional rights to marry and have their marriages recognized by the federal government. In its landmark decision issued last summer, the Supreme Court struck down part of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), finding that same-sex couples married under state law must have their marriages recognized by the federal government. However, in its other same-sex marriage decision, the Supreme Court avoided the question, for now, of whether same-sex couples …

Our primary goal was to determine the effects of 6-mo flight on the International Space Station (ISS) on selected anaerobic and aerobic enzymes, and the content of glycogen and lipids in slow and fast fibers of the soleus and gastrocnemius. Following local anesthesia, biopsies were obtained from nine ISS crew members ∼45 days preflight and on landing day (R+0) postflight. We subdivided the crew into those who ran 200 min/wk or more (high treadmill, HT) in-flight from those who ran /wk (low treadmill, LT). In the LT group, there was a loss of lipid in soleus type I fibers, and …

The relationship between substance use, mental health disorders, and delinquency among youth is well documented. What has received far less attention from researchers is the relationship between these issues among truant youth, in spite of studies that document truants are a population at risk for negative outcomes. This study bridges this gap by (a) examining psychosocial functioning and delinquency among truants and (b) assessing the efficacy of a brief intervention (BI) in reducing delinquent behavior over time. To meet these objectives, data were collected from 183 truant youth enrolled in an ongoing National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded BI project. …
Treating Family Members: The Effectiveness Of A Family-Oriented Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program, Melissa Lynn Miller
Treating Family Members: The Effectiveness Of A Family-Oriented Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program, Melissa Lynn Miller
Dissertations (1934 -)
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe emotion regulation disorder that, according to the biosocial theory, is developed and maintained through transactions that occur between biologically vulnerable persons and their environment. The family members of persons with BPD may experience many deleterious consequences as a result of their relative's illness, including both objective and subjective forms of burden. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was originally developed as a comprehensive treatment for persons with BPD, and new programs designed specifically to treat family members are emerging. These programs aim to help family members cope with their own stressors, as well as help …
The Role Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase In Mouse Oocyte Maturation And Subsequent Egg Activation, Ru Ya
The Role Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase In Mouse Oocyte Maturation And Subsequent Egg Activation, Ru Ya
Dissertations (1934 -)
Mammalian oogenesis begins during fetal development. Oocytes enter meiosis and arrest at prophase I before birth. Meiosis resumes after proper hormonal signaling, the oocyte completes meiosis I, and then ovulates in metaphase II, at which stage it arrests until fertilization occurs. Egg activation occurs upon sperm fertilization, which includes various physiological processes including calcium influx, release of cortical granules, and completion of meiosis II. However, egg activation can also occur without fertilization, which compromises the later embryonic development. The developmental period from prophase I to metaphase II is referred as oocyte maturation, and involves crucial dynamic change of the cytoskeleton …
An Examination Of The Role Of Neurocognitive Functioning In Illness Management Among Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Christopher James Fitzgerald
An Examination Of The Role Of Neurocognitive Functioning In Illness Management Among Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Christopher James Fitzgerald
Dissertations (1934 -)
Children and adolescents living with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) face many challenges in their daily lives due to the extensive care tasks that the illness requires. Adolescence is a period of development in which treatment adherence and metabolic control has been found to greatly decline. Research examining correlates of this decline in self-management has tended to focus on familial and psychosocial variables such as parental involvement and T1DM-related conflict. The period of adolescence is also marked by several changes in the development of the frontal lobes and prefrontal cortex, which are areas of the brain that are central to …

Novel Paradigms For Visual Field Mapping With Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Yan Ma
Dissertations (1934 -)
The overall goal of this study is to evaluate the existing, and develop new visual field mapping paradigms, which consist of visual stimulation scheme, post-processing and displaying tools using fMRI for both research and clinical applications.
We first directly compared phase mapping and random multifocal mapping paradigms with respect to clinically relevant factors. Multifocal mapping was superior in immunity to noise and was able to accurately decompose the response of single voxels to multiple stimulus locations. In contrast, phase mapping activated more extrastriate visual areas and was more efficient per run in achieving a statistically efficient response in a minimum …

Six-membered carbocycles are abundant in natural products. This structural feature is present in terpenes, secosteroids, antibiotics, and even imbedded in the polycyclic framework of complex alkaloids. A wide variety of methodologies have been utilized for the preparation of six-membered carbocycles including Robinson annulation, Diels-Alder cycloaddition, Dieckmann condensation, ring closing metathesis, photochemical carbonylation of alkenylcyclopropanes, addition of soft nucleophiles to acyclic (ç5-pentadienyl)iron cations, etc.
Acyclic (ç5-pentadienyl)iron(+1) cations were first prepared about 50 years ago. The reactivity …
Supramolecular Polysaccharide Composite Materials: Green And Recyclable Synthesis, Characterization, Analytical And Biomedical Applications, Simon Duri
Dissertations (1934 -)
A simple novel recyclable synthetic method was successfully developed for the synthesis of polysaccharide composite materials. The method involves the use of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [BMIm+Cl-], a simple ionic liquid, as the sole solvent. Naturally abundant and renewable materials such as cellulose (CEL) and chitosan (CS) were used for the preparation of the composite materials. CEL is the most abundant compound on earth, while CS is a product of deacetylation of chitin, which is the second most abundant material on earth. [BMIm+Cl-] is relatively non toxic, non volatile and stable over a wide range of temperature eliminating one of the major …

Neuropsychological Correlates Of Anosognosia In Mci And Dementia, Krystle Dina Barrera
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Anosognosia is a general term used to describe a lack of awareness of a disability and is well documented in various disorders associated with neurological compromise. While anosognosia is well documented as part and parcel to Alzheimer's dementia, less research has focused on determining the presence of anosognosia in what has come to be viewed as the subclinical precursor to dementia, mild cognitive impairment. In addition, a number of different methodologies and instruments are employed in quantifying and assessing anosognosia in various populations, which make comparison across studies and diagnoses difficult. Research commonly employs a paradigm that uses the discrepancy …
Implications Of Tailoring Emotional Expression Within An Expressive Writing Paradigm, Eric R. Hanson
Implications Of Tailoring Emotional Expression Within An Expressive Writing Paradigm, Eric R. Hanson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This dissertation uses the theoretical perspective that both emotion and emotional processing theories could greatly enhance feedback messages given in a linguistic writing paradigm. The measurement of emotional expression is briefly reviewed along with the basic expressive writing paradigm, outcome of this expressive writing paradigm, and the tailoring literature. Reference is made to the single study (Owen, et al., 2011), which has utilized tailoring in an expressive writing paradigm; the present study is a modification of this original study. This dissertation used clinically minded feedback which utilized both emotion and emotional processing theory. For the experimental design, three tailoring conditions …

Never Smokers -- Are They More Sensitive To The Respiratory Health Effects Of Ambient Air Pollution?, Zuhair Saleh Natto
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background: Several studies show an association between ambient particulate matter (PM) and all-cause mortality. The Adventist Health and Smog 1 (AHSMOG-1) study (N=6,338) has previously found associations between ambient air pollution and incident chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using the spatial interpolation method from the three nearest fixed monitoring stations to residence and workplace. However, few studies have assessed the risk of death among disease specific subgroups such as those with COPD.
Objectives: The aims of this study were 1) to assess the effect of chronic exposure to ambient air pollutants on risk of all-cause mortality among persons with COPD …

Screening Adherence And Emotional Adjustment Of Daughters Of Breast Cancer Patients, Sarah R. Ormseth
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Women at high risk for breast cancer oftentimes also experience psychological vulnerably related to experiences of cancer in their family, high bereavement rates and their own uncertainties regarding if and when they may develop the disease. This research sought to evaluate psychological adjustment and examine reattendance among a sample of women adhering to regular breast cancer surveillance, with a specific focus on daughters of breast cancer patients. The study described in Chapter 2 longitudinally profiled anxiety and depressive symptoms among these high-risk daughters across three consecutive surveillance appointments, and also evaluated the effects of a set of hypothesized predictors on …
