Multivariate Sexual Selection On Male Song Structure In Wild Populations Of Sagebrush Crickets, Cyphoderris Strepitans (Orthoptera: Haglidae), Scott K. Sakaluk, Sandra Steiger, John Hunt, Geoffrey D. Ower, Kevin A. Judge, Rebecca A. Smith, Kyle J. Caron
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
While a number of studies have measured multivariate sexual selection actingon sexual signals in wild populations, few have confirmed these findings withexperimental manipulation. Sagebrush crickets are ideally suited to such investi-gations because mating imposes an unambiguous phenotypic marker on malesarising from nuptial feeding by females. We quantified sexual selection operat-ing on male song by recording songs of virgin and mated males captured fromthree wild populations. To determine the extent to which selection on malesong is influenced by female preference, we conducted a companion study inwhich we synthesized male songs and broadcast them to females in choicetrials. Multivariate selection analysis revealed …

An Exploration Of The Lives Of Young, African American Women With Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Sarah Bollinger
An Exploration Of The Lives Of Young, African American Women With Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Sarah Bollinger
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Compared to other subtypes of breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer: TNBC) accounts for a disproportionate number of metastatic cases and cancer deaths. Glaring disparities are present in the occurrence of TNBC, such that those diagnosed are more likely to be African American: prevalence of 26% vs. 16% in non-African Americans) and premenopausal: 24% vs. 15% postmenopausal). A critical factor to consider regarding the disparities associated with TNBC is the evidence documenting the link between psychosocial stress over the life course and the occurrence of large, aggressive tumors that are characteristic of this subtype. Because issues such as crime, isolation, stress, …
Mutations In The Chaperone Hsp104 Differentially Propagate Yeast Prions, Jennifer Elizabeth Dulle
Mutations In The Chaperone Hsp104 Differentially Propagate Yeast Prions, Jennifer Elizabeth Dulle
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Molecular chaperones are critical elements of the protein quality control network and are responsible for protecting cells from protein misfolding and aggregation. In yeast, molecular chaperones also participate in the propagation of self-replicating, protein-only elements called prions. The AAA+ ATPase Hsp104 is a disaggregase essential for yeast prion maintenance and is responsible for fragmentation of prions to generate the transmissible prion propagons. This work focuses on further understanding the role of Hsp104 in prion propagation and protein aggregate resolubilization. To do this, I first identified novel mutations in Hsp104 which altered [PSI+] propagation and characterized their effects on Hsp104 function, …
Rescue Breathing In Noisy Environments, Brianna Slutsky
Rescue Breathing In Noisy Environments, Brianna Slutsky
Theses
This study considered rhythmic performance of rescue breathing by trained emergency responders and lay persons. Participants were asked to complete rescue breathing in 10 different scenarios. Such scenarios were intended to evaluate the effects of target rhythms and distractors on the responder's ability to administer rescue breathing ventilations at the appropriate rate and rhythm, in accordance with the standards established by the American Red Cross (2011). Current research concerning rhythmic performance with target and distractor rhythms suggests that auditory rhythms, whether target or distractor, have a greater influence on the motor behaviors of the human than visual rhythms. This research …

Demonstration Of Crispr/Cas9/Sgrna-Mediated Targeted Gene Modification In Arabidopsis, Tobacco, Sorghum And Rice, Wen Zhi Jiang, Huanbin Zhou, Honghao Bi, Michael E. Fromm, Bing Yang, Donald P. Weeks
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The type II CRISPR/Cas system from Streptococcus pyogenes and its simplified derivative, the Cas9/ single guide RNA (sgRNA) system, have emerged as potent new tools for targeted gene knockout in bacteria, yeast, fruit fly, zebrafish and human cells. Here, we describe adaptations of these systems leading to successful expression of the Cas9/ sgRNA system in two dicot plant species, Arabidopsis and tobacco, and two monocot crop species, rice and sorghum. Agrobacterium tumefaciens was used for delivery of genes encoding Cas9, sgRNA and a non-fuctional, mutant green fluorescence protein (GFP) to Arabidopsis and tobacco. The mutant GFP gene contained target sites …

Integrable Dissipative Nonlinear Second Order Differential Equations Via Factorizations And Abel Equations, S.C. Mancas, Haret C. Rosu
Publications
We emphasize two connections, one well known and another less known, between the dissipative nonlinear second order differential equations and the Abel equations which in its first kind form have only cubic and quadratic terms. Then, employing an old integrability criterion due to Chiellini, we introduce the corresponding integrable dissipative equations. For illustration, we present the cases of some integrable dissipative Fisher, nonlinear pendulum, and Burgers-Huxley type equations which are obtained in this way and can be of interest in applications. We also show how to obtain Abel solutions directly from the factorization of second-order nonlinear equations.
A Comparative Cytotoxic Evaluation Of Acrylamide And Diacetone Acrylamide To Investigate Their Suitability For Holographic Photopolymer Formulations, Dervil Cody, Alan Casey, Izabela Naydenova, Emilia Mihaylova
A Comparative Cytotoxic Evaluation Of Acrylamide And Diacetone Acrylamide To Investigate Their Suitability For Holographic Photopolymer Formulations, Dervil Cody, Alan Casey, Izabela Naydenova, Emilia Mihaylova
Articles
The comparative cytotoxic evaluation of two monomers Diacetone Acrylamide (DA) and Acrylamide (AA), used in holographic photopolymer formulations, is reported. Two normal cell lines were used: BEAS-2B and HaCaT. Cellular viability was assessed using the MTT assay for three different exposure times. A difference of two orders of magnitude is observed in the Lethal Dose (LD50) concentrations of the two monomers. Diacetone Acrylamide exhibits a significantly lower toxicity profile in comparison to Acrylamide at all exposure times. This result justifies the replacement of Acrylamide with Diacetone Acrylamide in the photopolymer formulation, with the view to reducing occupational hazard risks for …

The Effects Of Temperature And Ovarian Stage On Vitellin Concentrations In Sicyonia Ingentis, Lacee Sherman, Brian Tsukimura, Robert Delmanowski, Alan Terusaki
STAR Program Research Presentations
The ridgeback shrimp, Sicyonia ingentis, lives off of the west coast of North America along the shorelines of California, and Baja California and is a source of both revenue and food for residents of the area. The reproductive abilities of S. ingentis are crucial to the survival of the species. Vitellin (Vn) is an egg yolk protein found in the ovaries of reproductive shrimp and can also be seen in their hemolymph. This study examines temperature as a factor influencing the reproductive fitness of S. ingentis. The synthesis of Vitellin is a good indicator of reproductive fitness and the concentrations …

Fabrication And Characterization Of A Palladium/Porous Silicon Layer, Nicholas Hong Lui
Fabrication And Characterization Of A Palladium/Porous Silicon Layer, Nicholas Hong Lui
Master's Theses
When porous silicon is plated with a catalytic metal, the two materials can act together as a single entity whose electrical properties are sensitive to its environment – the sensing component of an electrochemical gas sensor. Etching pores into silicon is an electrochemical process; and which type of doped silicon used is one of its key parameters. For nearly all reported porous silicon gas sensors, the silicon has been of the p-doped variety – because p-doped porous etching is better understood and the layers that result from it are more predictable – despite n-doped silicon having potentially significant benefits in …

Department of Marine Sciences
This project focuses on Long Island Sound embayments and represents an exploration of the potential for coordination among community-based water quality monitoring groups, and coordination between community-based groups and data end users, including scientists and managers. Community-based monitoring groups represent a potential valuable source of water quality information. The development of standardized protocols, training methods and reporting procedures will serve to provide end users with the confidence necessary to utilize the data collected as part of community-based monitoring programs. Both groups of stakeholders stand to benefit from this type of coordination with the ultimate benefit being a healthier, better understood …
Legitimate Concern: The Assault On The Concept Of Rape, Matthew David Burgess
Legitimate Concern: The Assault On The Concept Of Rape, Matthew David Burgess
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
In this piece, I will explore the efforts of the Right to delegitimize the legal gains made by women in the fight against rape. I will begin with a brief context of rape law in America, and then explain exactly what precedent the judicial system in Michigan set for a woman’s ability to achieve justice legally in terms of rape. Then, I will show the response of the New Right (through multi-faceted means) to fight against the credibility of women who both legally and politically. Finally, I will show the manifestation of this response in the present-day rise of Men's …
