Human flesh is miraculous; it is the body’s largest organ weighing in at eight pounds, and measuring a total of twenty-two square feet. The skin not only functions as a protectant from life’s daily elements through its regenerative qualities, but also serves as a means for individuals to demonstrate self-expression; whether that is through body modifications, plastic surgery, tattoos, unique body piercings, skin stretching, or skin alterations for cultural traditions.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is known for its side effects. In this paper, we describe ART side effects as experienced by Chinese HIV+ individuals. This study presents two stages of a research project, combining qualitative in-depth interviews (29 HIV+ participants) with quantitative statistical data analysis (N = 120). All data was collected between July 2005 to March 2008 at Beijing's Ditan Hospital. Consent was obtained from each participant for the qualitative interview and again for the quantitative survey. During in-depth interviews, Chinese HIV+ patients reported experiencing digestive discomfort, skin rashes, numbness, memory loss, nightmares, and dizziness, which not only brought them …

Autoantibodies And Cytokines Levels In Type 1 Diabetic Patients, Meroj Ahmed Jasem
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes is characterized by a complete or near-complete insulin deficiency caused by an immune-mediated selective destruction of the insulin-producing β-cells in the Islets of Langerhans. Inflammatory mechanisms play a key role in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. Many findings suggest that the Islet autoantibody status in type 1 diabetes is linked to disease activity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the hypothesis that the systemic immunoregulatory balance, as defined by levels of circulating cytokines, is associated with Islet autoantibody status. METHODS: Cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, IL-5,IL-10, TNF-β and INF-γ) and Islet autoantibodies (ICA, GADA, IA-2) were measured in 56 …

He Expression Of P53 In Non Small Cell Lung Cancer, Banan Burhan Mohammed
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
BACKGROUND: Despite major advances in cancer treatment in the past two decades, the prognosis of patients with lung cancer has improved only minimally. Although tumor stage is the most significant prognostic factor, the variation in survival within staging groups requires information about additional factors influencing the outcome. Among several genetic aberrations that have been implicated in lung cancer, mutations in the p53 gene are the most common. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of p53 in non-small cell lung cancer. To correlate the relation of p53 with some clinico-pathological parameters. And to compare the results …

Multilocular Cystic Renal Cell Carcinoma, Miss-Diagnosed Clinically As Renal Hydatid, Niema Hamad Al-Heeti, Raji H. Al-Hadithi
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: Multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma (MCRCC) is a rare clear cell type of renal cell carcinoma. Although cytologyically and cytogenetically MCRCC is similar to clear cell carcinoma, histology and behavior differ markedly. Prognosis in MCRCC is excellent as the tumour is of consistently low grade and surgical resection is curative. We report here a case of MCRCC in 44 year old female presented with right loin pain, was miss-diagnosed as renal hydatid cyst for 2years. Local excision of the tumor mass only was done with no recurrence after 30 months of follow up after. The differentiation between renal hydatid …
Coupling Of The Biogeochemical Cycles Of Uranium And Manganese: Implications For The Fate And Transport Of Uranium In Subsurface Environments, Zimeng Wang
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Organic electron donor stimulated microbial reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) has been proposed as a strategy for the in situ immobilization of uranium contamination in the subsurface. The success of the bioremediation of uranium relies on the stability of the reduced U(IV) species: e.g., UO2) with respect to reoxidation and/or remobilization under groundwater conditions. Manganese is present at appreciable concentrations at several uranium-contaminated sites, and the redox cycling of manganese may significantly impact uranium's fate and transport. The biogeochemical coupling of uranium and manganese involves multiple interaction pathways that occur in the aqueous phase as well as at solid-water interfaces. …

Rage Ectodomain Shedding Is A Conserved And Differentially Regulated Process, Alexander E. Braley
Open Access Theses
The Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (RAGE) is a multi-ligand cell signaling receptor present on most cell types. Upregulation of RAGE is seen in a number of pathological states including various cancers, inflammatory and vascular disease, dementia and diabetes. Several studies have shown RAGE ectodomain shedding to be but little is known about the regulation and functional effects. Here we show evidence that human and mouse ectodomain shedding is inducible by several diverse shedding stimulators and the basic mechanism conserved. It is also shown here that RAGE shedding likely goes through different pathways, as ionomycin but not PMA shedding is …

BACKGROUND:
Neuro-inflammatory circuits in the tissue regulate the complex pathophysiology of pain. Protective nociceptive pain serves as an early warning system against noxious environmental stimuli. Tissue-resident mast cells orchestrate the increased thermal sensitivity following injection of basic secretagogue compound 48/80 in the hind paw tissues of ND4 mice. Here we investigated the effects of pre-treatment with TNF-α neutralizing antibody on compound 48/80-provoked thermal hyperalgesia.
METHODS:
We treated ND4 Swiss male mice with intravenous anti-TNF-α antibody or vehicle 30 minutes prior to bilateral, intra-plantar compound 48/80 administration and measured changes in the timing of hind paw withdrawal observed subsequent to mice …

Catalytic Reactions For The Production Of Biomarkers From The Biological Warfare Agent Anthrax (Dr.), Jason E. Hawkes, Dr. Milton L. Lee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Bacillus anthracis, more commonly known as anthrax, poses a serious threat to the national security of the United States of America. In its weaponized form, anthrax spores are easily aerosolized, demonstrate long residence times in the atmosphere (typically variable for several days), and can be fatal if ingested or inhaled into the lungs. Following ingestion or inhalation, rapid growth and reproductive activity is triggered, releasing large amounts of deadly toxin. The lethal dose of anthrax spores is very small, approximately 10 nanograms of spores.1 As a result of its easy dispersal, long residence times, and high toxicity, anthrax is becoming …

Time perception is crucial to goal attainment in humans and other animals, and interval timing also guides fundamental animal behaviors. Accumulating evidence has made it clear that in associative learning, temporal relations between events are encoded, and a few studies suggest this temporal learning occurs very rapidly. Most of these studies, however, have used methodologies that do not permit investigating the emergence of this temporal learning. In the present study we monitored respiration, ultrasonic vocalization (USV) and freezing behavior in rats in order to perform fine-grain analysis of fear responses during odor fear conditioning. In this paradigm an initially neutral …

We identify the cell cycle–regulated mRNA transcripts genome-wide in the osteosarcoma-derived U2OS cell line. This results in 2140 transcripts mapping to 1871 unique cell cycle–regulated genes that show periodic oscillations across multiple synchronous cell cycles. We identify genomic loci bound by the G2/M transcription factor FOXM1 by chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by high-throughput sequencing (ChIP-seq) and associate these with cell cycle–regulated genes. FOXM1 is bound to cell cycle–regulated genes with peak expression in both S phase and G2/M phases. We show that ChIP-seq genomic loci are responsive to FOXM1 using a real-time luciferase assay in live cells, showing that FOXM1 strongly …
