Fetal Sex Determination And Gendered Prenatal Consumption, Medora W. Barnes
Fetal Sex Determination And Gendered Prenatal Consumption, Medora W. Barnes
Sociology
Although expectant mothers have long purchased items in preparation for their baby’s birth, the timing and type of purchases being made have changed in response to pregnant women routinely learning the sex of their fetus through ultrasound. This article examines changes in these consumption patterns through data drawn from personal narratives with 25 women divided between two cohorts—those who gave birth in the 2000s and those who gave birth in the1970s. The routine use of ultrasound has encouraged changes in beliefs about the relationship between a fetus and its mother in younger women, which in turn inspires earlier purchases of …

Adapting Data Adaptive Methods For Small, But High Dimensional Omic Data: Applications To Gwas/Ewas And More, Sara Kherad Pajouh, Alan E. Hubbard, Martyn T. Smith
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Exploratory analysis of high dimensional "omics" data has received much attention since the explosion of high-throughput technology allows simultaneous screening of tens of thousands of characteristics (genomics, metabolomics, proteomics, adducts, etc., etc.). Part of this trend has been an increase in the dimension of exposure data in studies of environmental exposure and associated biomarkers. Though some of the general approaches, such as GWAS, are transferable, what has received less focus is 1) how to derive estimation of independent associations in the context of many competing causes, without resorting to a misspecified model, and 2) how to derive accurate small-sample inference …

Origin And Differential Selection Of Allelic Variation At Tas2r16 Associated With Salicin Bitter Taste Sensitivity In Africa, Michael Campbell
Origin And Differential Selection Of Allelic Variation At Tas2r16 Associated With Salicin Bitter Taste Sensitivity In Africa, Michael Campbell
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
Bitter taste perception influences human nutrition and health, and the genetic variation underlying this trait may play a role in disease susceptibility. To better understand the genetic architecture and patterns of phenotypic variability of bitter taste perception, we sequenced a 996 bp region, encompassing the coding exon of TAS2R16, a bitter taste receptor gene, in 595 individuals from 74 African populations, and in 94 non-Africans from 11 populations. We also performed genotype-phenotype association analyses of threshold levels of sensitivity to salicin, a bitter anti-inflammatory compound, in 296 individuals from Central and East Africa. In addition, we characterized TAS2R16 mutants in …

The MAPK3 Tpl2 controls innate and adaptive immunity by regulating TLR, TNF-α, and GPCR signaling in a variety of cell types. Its ablation gives rise to an anti-inflammatory phenotype characterized by resistance to LPS-induced endotoxin shock, DSS-induced colitis, and TNF-α-induced IBD. Here, we address the role of Tpl2 in autoimmunity. Our data show that the ablation and the pharmacological inhibition of Tpl2 protect mice from antiplatelet antibody-induced thrombocytopenia, a model of ITP. Thrombocytopenia in this model and in ITP is caused by phagocytosis of platelets opsonized with antiplatelet antibodies and depends on FcγR activation in splenic and hepatic myeloid cells. …

A Multi-Scale Analysis Of The Effects Of Local- And Landscape-Level Variables On Nuthatch Occupancy And Distribution, Jesse Wood
Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations
The objectives of this study are to conduct a multi-scale analysis of the effects of habitat variables on Brownheaded Nuthatch (S. pusilla) occupancy and spatial distribution in the greater Greenville area of South Carolina. By understanding the local- and landscape-drivers of an ecologically sensitive species, we can build a predictive model of species occurrence and contribute to regional conservation efforts of both habitat and biodiversity.

Densidad Y Abundancia De Conejo Pintado (Agouti Paca): Tres Métodos De Estimación De La Población, John Zeiger
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Cognitive Processes Underlying Affective Decision-Making Predicting Adolescent Smoking Behaviors In A Longitudinal Study, C. Anderson Johnson, Lin Xiao, Gilly Koritzky, Antoine Bechara
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
This study investigates the relationship between three different cognitive processes underlying the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and adolescent smoking behaviors in a longitudinal study. We conducted a longitudinal study of 181 Chinese adolescents in Chengdu City, China. The participants were followed from 10th to 11th grade. When they were in the 10th grade (Time 1), we tested these adolescents’ decision-making using the IGT and working memory capacity using the Self-ordered Pointing Test (SOPT). Self-report questionnaires were used to assess school academic performance and smoking behaviors. The same questionnaires were completed again at the 1-year follow-up (Time 2). The Expectancy-Valence (EV) …

Marine Oil Snow Sedimentation And Flocculent Accumulation (Mossfa) Workshop, Center For Spills In The Environment
Marine Oil Snow Sedimentation And Flocculent Accumulation (Mossfa) Workshop, Center For Spills In The Environment
Coastal Response Research Center
The MOSSFA hypothesis is that the formation of marine snow/oil aggregates and its accumulation at the seafloor is related to events associated with the oil spill, various mitigation measures (e.g., the use of dispersants and in situ burning), and increased sediment-laden fresh water releases from Mississippi River impoundments. If this hypothesis is correct then this phenomenon takes on an added global significance as 85% of deep-water oil exploration occurs adjacent to deltaic systems. To better understand the sequence of events and the oceanographic processes involved, three of the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI)
funded Centers (C-IMAGE, DEEP-C and ECOGIG), …

Observation-Based Algorithm Development For Subsurface Hydrology In Northern Temperate Wetlands, Chun-Mei Chiu
Open Access Dissertations
This study investigates wetland subsurface hydrology, as well as biogeochemistry - which is strongly influenced by water and temperature dynamics - as these interactions are expected to be highly significant, yet remain poorly represented in current ecosystem and climate models.
Northern wetlands have received widespread public attention due to steadily increasing summer mean global temperatures, extreme precipitation events and higher rates of natural greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the significant impacts on them due to human activities. The goal of my graduate research has been to improve quantification of the role of subsurface hydrology in northern wetlands by using …

String Similarity Metrics For Ontology Alignment, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler
String Similarity Metrics For Ontology Alignment, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Ontology alignment is an important part of enabling the semantic web to reach its full potential. The vast majority of ontology alignment systems use one or more string similarity metrics, but often the choice of which metrics to use is not given much attention. In this work we evaluate a wide range of such metrics, along with string pre-processing strategies such as removing stop words and considering synonyms, on different types of ontologies. We also present a set of guidelines on when to use which metric. We furthermore show that if optimal string similarity metrics are chosen, those alone can …
Theoretical, Methodological And Practical Challenges In Designing Formative Evaluations Of Personal Ehealth Tools, Michael S. Dohan, Joseph Tan
Theoretical, Methodological And Practical Challenges In Designing Formative Evaluations Of Personal Ehealth Tools, Michael S. Dohan, Joseph Tan
Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement
This article describes the challenges experienced in designing a formative evaluation of a mobile personal eHealth tool for disease symptom tracking, in the context of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases management. As this unique context is characterized by regular visits with physicians, and the need to report disease activity to the physician, a mixed methodology is used to assess the fit of the technology to the context, and a multilevel model is used to evaluate theoretical links between patient and physician. Other issues include selection of sampling techniques, recruitment, and preventing study attrition by participants.
