Predicting The Behavioral Impact Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: Issues And Limitations, Archy O. De Berker, Marom Bikson, Sven Bestmann
Predicting The Behavioral Impact Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: Issues And Limitations, Archy O. De Berker, Marom Bikson, Sven Bestmann
Publications and Research
The transcranial application of weak currents to the human brain has enjoyed a decade of widespread use, providing a simple and powerful tool for non-invasively altering human brain function. However, our understanding of current delivery and its impact upon neural circuitry leaves much to be desired. We argue that the credibility of conclusions drawn with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is contingent upon realistic explanations of how tDCS works, and that our present understanding of tDCS limits the technique’s use to localize function in the human brain. We outline two central issues where progress is required: the localization of currents, …

Insertionmapper, A Pipeline Tool For The Identification Of Targeted Sequences From Multidimensional High Throughput Sequencing Data, Wenwei Xiong, Limei He, Yubin Li, Hugo K. Dooner, Chunguang Du
Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Background: The advent of next-generation high-throughput technologies has revolutionized whole genome sequencing, yet some experiments require sequencing only of targeted regions of the genome from a very large number of samples. These regions can be amplified by PCR and sequenced by next-generation methods using a multidimensional pooling strategy. However, there is at present no available generalized tool for the computational analysis of target-enriched NGS data from multidimensional pools. Results: Here we present InsertionMapper, a pipeline tool for the identification of targeted sequences from multidimensional high throughput sequencing data. InsertionMapper consists of four independently working modules: Data Preprocessing, Database Modeling, Dimension Deconvolution …

Background: Leptospira-induced macrophage death has been confirmed to play a crucial role in pathogenesis of leptospirosis, a worldwide zoonotic infectious disease. Intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) elevation induced by infection can cause cell death, but [Ca2+]i changes and high [Ca2+]i-induced death of macrophages due to infection of Leptospira have not been previously reported.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We first used a Ca2+-specific fluorescence probe to confirm that the infection of L. interrogans strain Lai triggered a significant increase of [Ca2+]i in mouse J774A.1 or human THP-1 macrophages. Laser confocal microscopic examination …

A Source Of Terrestrial Organic Carbon To Investigate The Browning Of Aquatic Ecosystems, Jay T. Lennon, Stephen K. Hamilton, Mario E. Muscarella, A. Stuart Grandy, Kyle Wickings, Stuart E. Jones
Faculty Publications
There is growing evidence that terrestrial ecosystems are exporting more dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to aquatic ecosystems than they did just a few decades ago. This “browning” phenomenon will alter the chemistry, physics, and biology of inland water bodies in complex and difficult-to-predict ways. Experiments provide an opportunity to elucidate how browning will affect the stability and functioning of aquatic ecosystems. However, it is challenging to obtain sources of DOC that can be used for manipulations at ecologically relevant scales. In this study, we evaluated a commercially available source of humic substances (“Super Hume”) as an analog for natural sources …
Grief Lives Online: An Empirical Study Of Kübler-Ross' Categories Of Bereavement On Myspace Profiles, Ilona Yurivna Malenkovich
Grief Lives Online: An Empirical Study Of Kübler-Ross' Categories Of Bereavement On Myspace Profiles, Ilona Yurivna Malenkovich
Dissertations and Theses
With the widespread use of the Internet, grief has been extended in its representation. Specifically, social networking sites, like MySpace, have turned grief presentation from private expressions into public displays of mourning. This study utilizes the theoretical foundations of the grief presentation process of Kübler-Ross' (1969) five categories of bereavement (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) to determine whether the grief presentation process is present in an online setting. In this study, the researcher conducted an empirical investigation of 4,931 comments, resulting in 22,263 bereavement themes outlined by Kübler-Ross, which were condensed into 2,288 time-point comparisons posted to 140 MySpace …

Bioerosive Structures In Orbitolinid Foraminifera: Examples From The Lower Cretaceous Of Central Iran, Felix Schlagintweit, Ioan I. Bucur, Koorosh Rashidi, Behnam Saberzadeh
Studia UBB Geologia
Lower Cretaceous orbitolinid assemblages from Central Iran yield various bioerosional structures. The omnipresent traces of different boring taxa and groups (e.g., sponges, calcimicrobes, incertae sedis) represent a characteristic feature of the investigated thin-section material. The assemblage can be attributed to the Entobia ichnofacies dominated by borings assigned to the activity of sponges. The boring galleries are often concentrated in a plane parallel to the test surface, along the boundary of the marginal and the central zone of the orbitolinid tests. The borings are observed in foraminiferan-dasycladalean wackestones to poorly washed-out packstones, which can be referred to a subtidal …

How Changes In Extracellular Matrix Mechanics And Gene Expression Variability Might Combine To Drive Cancer Progression, Justin Werfel, Silva Krause, Ashley G. Bischof, Robert J. Mannix, Heather Tobin, Yaneer Bar-Yam, Robert M. Bellin, Donald E. Ingber
Biology Department Faculty Scholarship
Changes in extracellular matrix (ECM) structure or mechanics can actively drive cancer progression; however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Here we explore whether this process could be mediated by changes in cell shape that lead to increases in genetic noise, given that both factors have been independently shown to alter gene expression and induce cell fate switching. We do this using a computer simulation model that explores the impact of physical changes in the tissue microenvironment under conditions in which physical deformation of cells increases gene expression variability among genetically identical cells. The model reveals that cancerous tissue growth can …
Intellectual Property And Higher Education: Challenges, Virgil Van Dusen
Intellectual Property And Higher Education: Challenges, Virgil Van Dusen
Administrative Issues Journal
Intellectual property has become a highly coveted asset that can potentially reap a financial windfall for the owner who exploits its utility. Higher education has focused on the discovery of new knowledge, which can translate into intellectual property, but legislation, higher education policy, and/or contractual engagement may dictate ownership or opportunities for ownership of intellectual property by those involved in the discovery process. The dissemination of new knowledge acquired in the discovery of intellectual property may be limited for purposes of protection of commercial development. At the same time, higher education is becoming more involved in the oversight of technology …

The purpose of this research was to develop a topical microsphere delivery system in a thermosensitive 20% poloxamer 407 gel (Pluronic F127) to control release of KSL-W, a cationic antimicrobial decapeptide, for a period of 4-7 days for potential application in combat related injuries. KSL-W loaded microsphere formulations were prepared by a solvent extraction-evaporation method (water-oil-water), with poly (D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) (50 : 50, low-weight, and hydrophilic end) as the polymeric system. After optimization of the process, three formulations (A, B, and C) were prepared with different organic to water ratio of the primary emulsion while maintaining other components and …

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is caused when defects of motile cilia lead to chronic airway infections, male infertility, and situs abnormalities. Multiple causative PCD mutations account for only 65% of cases, suggesting that many genes essential for cilia function remain to be discovered. By using zebrafish morpholino knockdown of PCD candidate genes as an in vivo screening platform, we identified c21orf59, ccdc65, and c15orf26 as critical for cilia motility. c21orf59 and c15orf26 knockdown in zebrafish and planaria blocked outer dynein arm assembly, and ccdc65 knockdown altered cilia beat pattern. Biochemical analysis in Chlamydomonas revealed that the C21orf59 ortholog FBB18 is …
