Microbes: An Educational Picture Book, Heather Stratton, Richard Hull, William Mccleary

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With all the hype and paranoia in our media today about disease causing microbes, the need arises for a more complete picture of these tiny organisms and some of their other roles in our lives to be presented. I have written a children’s story in an attempt to do just this. The book is titled Microbes. It is an acknowledgement of the dangers of microorganisms, but also an explanation of their necessary influence.

The Kalman Filter For Linear Systems On Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Nick Wintz Oct 2013

The Kalman Filter For Linear Systems On Time Scales, Martin Bohner, Nick Wintz

Faculty Scholarship

We introduce the Kalman filter for linear systems on time scales, which includes the discrete and continuous versions as special cases. When the system is also stochastic, we show that the Kalman filter is an observer that estimates the system when the state is corrupted by noisy measurements. Finally, we show that the duality of the Kalman filter and the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) is preserved in their unification on time scales. A numerical example is provided.

USF Patents

A submersible, self-propelled apparatus for analyzing a component contained in a liquid medium. The submersible, self-propelled apparatus uses kinetic energy of the apparatus to drive a liquid under analysis through the apparatus. This is accomplished by use of a conveyance system that is attached to the analytical system of the apparatus. A sensor system is used to analyze the component collected within the confines of an analysis chamber, a part of the analysis system. The invention also includes a method of using the analytical apparatus.

Motivation To Reduce Risk Behaviors While In Prison: Qualitative Analysis Of Interviews With Current And Formerly Incarcerated Women, Neetu Abad, Monique Carry, Jeffrey H. Herbst, Catherine I. Fogel Oct 2013

Motivation To Reduce Risk Behaviors While In Prison: Qualitative Analysis Of Interviews With Current And Formerly Incarcerated Women, Neetu Abad, Monique Carry, Jeffrey H. Herbst, Catherine I. Fogel

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Prison is an environment in which programs can be implemented to change harmful behaviors among high-risk populations. Incarcerated women experience high rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), yet little research has examined women’s motivation to reduce risky behaviors during incarceration. In-depth individual interviews were conducted with former and current women prisoners in two North Carolina correctional facilities and analyzed to identify barriers and facilitators of behavior change while in prison. Analyses revealed key motivators of behavior change: Viewing prison as a place to recover from past trauma, removing oneself from negative social networks, gaining access to needed …

California Allows Children To Have More Than Two Legal Parents, Joanna L. Grossman Oct 2013

California Allows Children To Have More Than Two Legal Parents, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

California Governor Jerry Brown recently signed into law a measure that allows a child, in an appropriate case, to have more than two legal parents. This is a truly novel development, as states have otherwise uniformly taken the view that three parents is a crowd that cannot be tolerated. Ever. ...

In this column, I’ll discuss the ruling that brought this question into focus—a disturbing case of a child who had not a single stable parent, despite having three adults potentially holding parental rights with regard to the child— and the potential implications of the legislature’s change to the parentage …

Hemoglobin Isoform Differentiation And Allosteric Regulation Of Oxygen Binding In The Turtle, Trachemys Scripta, Christian Damsgaard, Jay F. Storz, Federico G. Hoffmann, Angela Fago Oct 2013

Hemoglobin Isoform Differentiation And Allosteric Regulation Of Oxygen Binding In The Turtle, Trachemys Scripta, Christian Damsgaard, Jay F. Storz, Federico G. Hoffmann, Angela Fago

Jay F. Storz Publications

When freshwater turtles acclimatize to winter hibernation, there is a gradual transition from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism, which may require adjustments of blood O2 transport before turtles become anoxic. Here, we report the effects of protons, anionic cofactors, and temperature on the O2-binding properties of isolated hemoglobin (Hb) isoforms, HbA and HbD, in the turtle Trachemys scripta. We determined the primary structures of the constituent subunits of the two Hb isoforms, and we related the measured functional properties to differences in O2 affinity between untreated hemolysates from turtles that were acclimated to normoxia and anoxia. Our …

During a global survey of the diversity of vertebrates and their parasites including the Gobi and desert/steppe biomes ranging from south central to western Mongolia, we found metacestodes (larvae) of Echinococcus multilocularis (Leuckart 1863) in the liver of an individual vole (Microtus limnophilus Büchner 1889) collected in grassland habitat at Har Us Lake, southeast of Hovd, Mongolia. Positive identification of E. multilocularis from near Hovd was made via comparative cyst morphology, study of hooks from the rostellum derived from protoscolexes, and DNA sequencing of the COX1 mitochondrial gene extracted from tissue of the cysts frozen in the field. This …

These cestodes have a very small strobila with only three segments, regularly alternating genital pores, genital ducts crossing excretory canals ventrally, ovoid to pyriform cirrus sac, three to five testes, external seminal vesicle present and separated from cirrus sac by long seminal duct surrounded by glandular material, uterus ephemeral, eggs forming rapidly in gravid segments, and seminal receptacle present. Pritchardia boliviensis n. sp. includes a single species that occurs in small marsupials in the family …

A New Look At The Dynamic Similarity Hypothesis: The Importance Of Swing Phase, David A. Raichlen, Herman Pontzer, Liza J. Shapiro Oct 2013

A New Look At The Dynamic Similarity Hypothesis: The Importance Of Swing Phase, David A. Raichlen, Herman Pontzer, Liza J. Shapiro

Publications and Research

Summary The Dynamic Similarity Hypothesis (DSH) suggests that when animals of different size walk at similar Froude numbers (equal ratios of inertial and gravitational forces) they will use similar size-corrected gaits. This application of similarity theory to animal biomechanics has contributed to fundamental insights in the mechanics and evolution of a diverse set of locomotor systems. However, despite its popularity, many mammals fail to walk with dynamically similar stride lengths, a key element of gait that determines spontaneous speed and energy costs. Here, we show that the applicability of the DSH is dependent on the inertial forces examined. In general, …

Utilization Of Ancient Dna To Understand The Organization Of Social Power In An Ancient Peruvian Population, Christi Embry, Dr. Ray Matheny Oct 2013

Utilization Of Ancient Dna To Understand The Organization Of Social Power In An Ancient Peruvian Population, Christi Embry, Dr. Ray Matheny

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Molecular biological techniques are allowing researchers to answer questions hidden within the physical archaeological record. DNA analysis of individuals excavated from multiple ancient populations has previously shed light on the origins and genetic affinities of these ancient peoples (5,6). These studies have the power to determine the structure of the ancient populations and may identify modern populations that have descended from them. Laboratory techniques have allowed researchers to identify four major haplogroups (A, B, C, D) and one odd group called X, that make up the majority of the modern Native American populations in North and South America. (8) This …

Tolkien's Devices: The Heraldy Of Middle-Earth, Jamie Mcgregor Oct 2013

Tolkien's Devices: The Heraldy Of Middle-Earth, Jamie Mcgregor

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Studies a set of images Tolkien deploys with great skill to represent essential thematic elements of the opposition between forces of the Alliance and the Enemy. These include the organic and natural symbols of Gondor, Rohan, Dol Amroth as opposed to the Eye of Mordor and White Hand of Isengard. McGregor’s observations on Saruman’s choice of imagery are particularly valuable in showing how Tolkien revealed the wizard’s attempts to play both sides even at the symbolic level.

Polymers Functioning As Artificial Muscles, Nicholas Stanonis, William Pitt Oct 2013

Polymers Functioning As Artificial Muscles, Nicholas Stanonis, William Pitt

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Current research in the field of polymers has led to the development of synthetic muscles that function similar to biological muscles. Scientists have engineered polymers to contract up to one thousand times their original volume when exposed to changes in light, temperature, voltage, or pH. The ability to contract and relax makes these polymers ideal artificial muscles. Currently, artificial muscles are being applied in the field of robotics. NASA is in the process of developing a dust wiper for their planetary rovers that operates with an artificial muscle. A common goal that many scientists are working towards is the implementation …
