What Teachers Need To Know To Teach Mathematics: An Argument For A Reconceptualised Model, Derek P. Hurrell Nov 2013

What Teachers Need To Know To Teach Mathematics: An Argument For A Reconceptualised Model, Derek P. Hurrell

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Since Shulman’s (1986) seminal work on Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) was released, it has created opportunities for the creation of constructs to scaffold the knowledge and understandings that teachers need in order to be effective. Adapting this work from being a heuristic to an operational structure has seen the development of many models. One such model regarding Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT) (Hill et al., 2008) has enjoyed a good deal of attention. This paper aims to argue for a reconceptualisation of Hill et al.’s (2008) model to make it as informative as possible for teachers and teaching.

Constraint-Based Automatic Symmetry Detection, Shao Jie Zhang, Jun Sun, Chengnian Sun, Yang Liu, Junwei Ma, Jin Song Dong Nov 2013

Constraint-Based Automatic Symmetry Detection, Shao Jie Zhang, Jun Sun, Chengnian Sun, Yang Liu, Junwei Ma, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present an automatic approach to detecting symmetry relations for general concurrent models. Despite the success of symmetry reduction in mitigating state explosion problem, one essential step towards its soundness and effectiveness, i.e., how to discover sufficient symmetries with least human efforts, is often either overlooked or oversimplified. In this work, we show how a concurrent model can be viewed as a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP), and present an algorithm capable of detecting symmetries arising from the CSP which induce automorphisms of the model. To the best of our knowledge, our method is the first approach that can automatically detect …

Engineering-Based Problem Solving In The Middle School: Design And Construction With Simple Machines, Lyn D. English, Peter Hudson, Les Dawes Oct 2013

Engineering-Based Problem Solving In The Middle School: Design And Construction With Simple Machines, Lyn D. English, Peter Hudson, Les Dawes

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Incorporating engineering concepts into middle school curriculum is seen as an effective way to improve students’ problem-solving skills. A selection of findings is reported from a STEM-based unit in which students in the second year (grade 8) of a three-year longitudinal study explored engineering concepts and principles pertaining to the functioning of simple machines. The culminating activity, the focus of this paper, required the students to design, construct, test, and evaluate a trebuchet catapult. We consider findings from one of the schools, a co-educational college, where we traced the design process developments of four student groups from two classes. The …

The Humanistic Side Of Engineering: Considering Social Science And Humanities Dimensions Of Engineering In Education And Research, Morgan Hynes, Jessica Swenson Oct 2013

The Humanistic Side Of Engineering: Considering Social Science And Humanities Dimensions Of Engineering In Education And Research, Morgan Hynes, Jessica Swenson

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Mathematics and science knowledge/skills are most commonly associated with engineering’s pre-requisite knowledge. Our goals in this paper are to argue for a more systematic inclusion of social science and humanities knowledge in the introduction of engineering to K-12 students. As part of this argument, we present a construct for framing the humanistic side of engineering with illustrative examples of what appealing to the humanistic side of engineering can look like in a classroom setting, and opportunities for research that examines the dynamics the humanistic side of engineering introduces into engineering learning and teaching. The illustrative examples are drawn from interactions …

Secondary Students' Conceptual Understanding Of Engineering As A Field, Devlin B. Montfort, Shane Brown, Victoria Whritenour Oct 2013

Secondary Students' Conceptual Understanding Of Engineering As A Field, Devlin B. Montfort, Shane Brown, Victoria Whritenour

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Researchers have long been interested in how to recruit and retain more and more diverse students into engineering programs. One consistent challenge in this research is understanding the impacts of interventions from the point of view of the student, and how their preconceptions may influence that effectiveness. This study investigated how secondary students understand the concept of engineering, including what engineering is and what engineers do. The purpose of this work was to describe students’ conceptions of engineering, and to determine how those perceptions relate to student interest in engineering careers. The investigation was founded on the theoretical framework of …

Towards A New Kind Of Cognition, Callan Slipper Oct 2013

Towards A New Kind Of Cognition, Callan Slipper

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

To explore Chiara’s cognitive proposal, this article takes a phenomenological and interdisciplinary approach in an attempt to give insight into the experience of cognition and offer a basis for understanding it within the context of human development. The article outlines three modes of cognition that can be seen in human being using a schematic understanding of childhood development as a basis. These modes of cognition are then looked at from an evolutionary perspective seeing how human cognition, from the arrival of representational thought, has developed under the influence of culture more than of biology. This provides instruments for understanding the …

Spatially Explicit Model Of Wintering Common Loons: Conservation Implications, Kristopher J. Winiarski, David L. Miller, Peter W. C. Patton, Scott R. Mcwilliams Oct 2013

Spatially Explicit Model Of Wintering Common Loons: Conservation Implications, Kristopher J. Winiarski, David L. Miller, Peter W. C. Patton, Scott R. Mcwilliams

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Common loons Gavia immer are a conservation concern in New England due to a variety of anthropogenic factors, yet little is known about biotic and abiotic environmental factors determining their wintering distribution and abundance in nearshore and offshore waters. The primary objective of this study was to develop a spatially explicit abundance model of wintering common loons in the maritime waters of southern New England (USA) that could inform decisions about offshore development. Aerial line-transect surveys were conducted throughout a 3800 km2 study area off the coast of Rhode Island during the winters of 2010–2011 and 2011–2012. A density …

As Strong As The Weakest Link: Mining Diverse Cliques In Weighted Graphs, Petko Bogdanov, Ben Baumer, Prithwish Basu, Amotz Bar-Noy, Ambuj K. Singh

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Mining for cliques in networks provides an essential tool for the discovery of strong associations among entities. Applications vary, from extracting core subgroups in team performance data arising in sports, entertainment, research and business; to the discovery of functional complexes in high-throughput gene interaction data. A challenge in all of these scenarios is the large size of real-world networks and the computational complexity associated with clique enumeration. Furthermore, when mining for multiple cliques within the same network, the results need to be diversified in order to extract meaningful information that is both comprehensive and representative of the whole dataset. We …

Identifying Best Practices For Engaging Faculty In International Agricultural Education Experiences, Alexa J. Lamm, T. Grady Roberts, Amy Harder, Nicole Stedman, Marta Hartman

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Universities are being called upon to internationalize curriculum as the need for a globally competent workforce increases. Without globally-competent faculty, international integration within higher education cannot occur. Literature indicates that participation in short-term international agricultural education experiences is important to increasing agricultural faculty members’ cultural awareness. However, the best way to design and implement such experiences for faculty is uncharted. The purpose of the study was to identify best practices for facilitating a short-term international agricultural education experience for faculty in the agricultural and life sciences that encouraged learning, discussion, and reflection leading faculty to further integrate international perspectives in …

Epigenetic Dominance Of Prion Conformers, Eri Saijo, Hae-Eun Kang, Jifeng Bian, Kristi G. Bowling, Shawn Browning, Sehun Kim, Nora Hunter, Glenn C. Telling

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Although they share certain biological properties with nucleic acid based infectious agents, prions, the causative agents of invariably fatal, transmissible neurodegenerative disorders such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, sheep scrapie, and human Creutzfeldt Jakob disease, propagate by conformational templating of host encoded proteins. Once thought to be unique to these diseases, this mechanism is now recognized as a ubiquitous means of information transfer in biological systems, including other protein misfolding disorders such as those causing Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. To address the poorly understood mechanism by which host prion protein (PrP) primary structures interact with distinct prion conformations to influence pathogenesis, …

Mri Characterization Of Radiation Necrosis In An Animal Model: Time To Onset, Progression, And Therapeutic Response, Xiaoyu Jiang Oct 2013

Mri Characterization Of Radiation Necrosis In An Animal Model: Time To Onset, Progression, And Therapeutic Response, Xiaoyu Jiang

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Radiation necrosis is a severe, but late occurring type of injury to normal tissue, within and surrounding a radiation treatment field, which can lead to significant complications for neurooncology patients. Radiation necrosis is difficult to distinguish from recurrent tumor by either neurologic examination or clinical imaging protocols. Concerns for the development of radiation necrosis often limit therapeutic radiation doses. Current treatment options for radiation necrosis are limited. The development of solutions to these clinical challenges has been hampered by an appropriate animal model of radiation necrosis.

With a novel mouse model of radiation necrosis developed in our lab employing a …
