Scalar Differential Equation For Slowly-Varying Thickness-Shear Modes In At-Cut Quartz Resonators With Surface Impedance For Acoustic Wave Sensor Application, Huijing He, Jiashi Yang, John A. Kosinski

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

For time-harmonic motions, we generalize a 2-D scalar differential equation derived previously by Tiersten for slowly-varying thickness-shear vibrations of AT-cut quartz resonators. The purpose of the generalization is to include the effects of surface acoustic impedance from, e.g., mass layers or fluids for sensor applications. In addition to the variation of fields along the plate thickness, which is considered in the usual 1-D acoustic wave sensor models, the equation obtained also describes in-plane variations of the fields, and therefore can be used to study the vibrations of finite plate sensors with edge effects. The equation is compared with the theory …

Calmodulin-Mediated Signal Transduction Pathways In Arabidopsis Are Fine-Tuned By Methylation, Joydeep Banerjee, Roberta Magnani, Meera Nair, Lynnette M. Dirk, Seth Debolt, Indu B. Maiti, Robert L. Houtz

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Calmodulin N-methyltransferase (CaM KMT) is an evolutionarily conserved enzyme in eukaryotes that transfers three methyl groups to a highly conserved lysyl residue at position 115 in calmodulin (CaM). We sought to elucidate whether the methylation status of CaM plays a role in CaM-mediated signaling pathways by gene expression analyses of CaM KMT and phenotypic characterization of Arabidopsis thaliana lines wherein CaM KMT was overexpressed (OX), partially silenced, or knocked out. CaM KMT was expressed in discreet spatial and tissue-specific patterns, most notably in root tips, floral buds, stamens, apical meristems, and germinating seeds. Analysis of transgenic plants with genetic dysfunction …

High-Throughput Amplicon Sequencing Of Rrna Genes Requires A Copy Number Correction To Accurately Reflect The Effects Of Management Practices On Soil Nematode Community Structure, B. J. Darby, T. C. Todd, M. A. Herman Nov 2013

High-Throughput Amplicon Sequencing Of Rrna Genes Requires A Copy Number Correction To Accurately Reflect The Effects Of Management Practices On Soil Nematode Community Structure, B. J. Darby, T. C. Todd, M. A. Herman

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Nematodes are abundant consumers in grassland soils, but more sensitive and specific methods of enumeration are needed to improve our understanding of how different nematode species affect, and are affected by, ecosystem processes. High-throughput amplicon sequencing is used to enumerate microbial and invertebrate communities at a high level of taxonomic resolution, but the method requires validation against traditional specimen-based morphological identifications. To investigate the consistency between these approaches, we enumerated nematodes from a 25-year field experiment using both morphological and molecular identification techniques in order to determine the long-term effects of annual burning and nitrogen enrichment on soil nematode communities. …

Awareness And Usage Of Collaboration And Communication Technologies In Student Teamwork , Manouchehr Tabatabaei, Marco Lam

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

In this study, we investigate students’ awareness and usage of collaboration and communication technologies (CCTs). Coordination and communication are two of the key processes for effective teamwork that have been identified in the literature. We find significant differences in awareness of CCTs between various student groups. However, when controlling for awareness, we find no difference in usage. While the proportion of students that are aware of various CCTs is high, the reported usage of CCTs is low. Because of the increased emphasis on teamwork, students need to be taught the technologies they need to use for collaboration and communication in …

Time-Dependence Of Risperidone And Asenapine Sensitization And Associated D2 Receptor Mechanism, Jun Gao, Ming Li

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

When an antipsychotic drug is given repeatedly and intermittently, there is often a long-term increase in its behavioral efficacy, termed antipsychotic sensitization. With the passage of time, the magnitude of antipsychotic sensitization may increase or decrease depending on the principle of Time-Dependent Sensitization (TDS) or memory decay, respectively. In the present study, we examined the time-dependent feature and possible dopamine D2 receptor mechanism of sensitization induced by the antipsychotics risperidone and asenapine in the conditioned avoidance response test. Well-trained male adult Sprague-Dawley rats were first repeatedly treated with risperidone (1.0 mg/kg) or asenapine (0.2 mg/kg) and tested for avoidance …

Intrinsic Disorder Within An Akap-Protein Kinase A Complex Guides Local Substrate Phosphorylation, F. Donelson Smith, Steve L. Reichow, Jessica L. Esseltine, Dan Shi, Lorene K. Langeberg, John D. Scott, Tamir Gonen

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Anchoring proteins sequester kinases with their substrates to locally disseminate intracellular signals and avert indiscriminate transmission of these responses throughout the cell. Mechanistic understanding of this process is hampered by limited structural information on these macromolecular complexes. A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) spatially constrain phosphorylation by cAMP-dependent protein kinases (PKA). Electron microscopy and three-dimensional reconstructions of type-II PKA-AKAP18γ complexes reveal hetero-pentameric assemblies that adopt a range of flexible tripartite configurations. Intrinsically disordered regions within each PKA regulatory subunit impart the molecular plasticity that affords an ∼16 nanometer radius of motion to the associated catalytic subunits. Manipulating flexibility within the PKA holoenzyme …

Moving Difference (Mdiff) Non-Adiabatic Rapid Sweep (Nars) Epr Of Copper(Ii), James S. Hyde, Brian Bennett, Aaron W. Kittell, Jason M. Kowalski, Jason Walter Sidabras

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Non-adiabatic rapid sweep (NARS) EPR spectroscopy has been introduced for application to nitroxide-labeled biological samples (Kittell et al., 2011). Displays are pure absorption, and are built up by acquiring data in spectral segments that are concatenated. In this paper we extend the method to frozen solutions of copper-imidazole, a square planar copper complex with four in-plane nitrogen ligands. Pure absorption spectra are created from concatenation of 170 5-gauss segments spanning 850 G at 1.9 GHz. These spectra, however, are not directly useful since nitrogen superhyperfine couplings are barely visible. Application of the moving difference (MDIFF) algorithm to the digitized NARS …

On The Equivalences And Differences Of Evolutionary Algorithms, Haiping Maa, Dan Simon, Minrui Feic, Zixiang Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are fast and robust computation methods for global optimization, and have been widely used in many real-world applications. We first conceptually discuss the equivalences of various popular EAs including genetic algorithm (GA), biogeography-based optimization (BBO), differential evolution (DE), evolution strategy (ES) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). We find that the basic versions of BBO, DE, ES and PSO are equal to the GA with global uniform recombination (GA/GUR) under certain conditions. Then we discuss their differences based on biological motivations and implementation details, and point out that their distinctions enhance the diversity of EA research and applications. …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries Hasle (Hasle) (Ps-n) is distinctive among the ecologically important marine diatoms because it produces the neurotoxin domoic acid. Although the biology of Ps-n has been investigated intensely, the characterization of the genes and biochemical pathways leading to domoic acid biosynthesis has been limited. To identify transcripts whose levels correlate with domoic acid production, we analyzed Ps-n under conditions of high and low domoic acid production by cDNA microarray technology and reverse-transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) methods. Our goals included identifying and validating robust reference genes for Ps-n RNA expression analysis under these conditions.

Michigan Tech Research Institute Publications

Background

A study of the impacts on respiratory health of the 2007 wildland fires in and around San Diego County, California is presented. This study helps to address the impact of fire emissions on human health by modeling the exposure potential of proximate populations to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) from vegetation fires. Currently, there is no standard methodology to model and forecast the potential respiratory health effects of PM plumes from wildland fires, and in part this is due to a lack of methodology for rigorously relating the two. The contribution in this research specifically targets that absence by modeling …

Project Safe Flight: Making New York Safe For Migratory Birds, Kaitlyn L. Parkins, Susan B. Elbin Ph.D., Adriana Palmer, Darren Klein, Elle Barnes

Publications and Research

More than 100 species of migratory birds pass through New York City during spring and fall migrations. Located at the nexus of several migratory routes, New York City’s tall buildings and reflective glass pose a serious threat to over 100 species of migratory birds. Since 1997, NYC Audubon has led Project Safe Flight (PSF), a volunteer-based citizen-science project, with the goal of monitoring and mitigating bird collisions. We examined 16 years of PSF data, during which volunteers collected over 6,000 birds of 126 different species. The top two species, White-throated Sparrow and Common Yellowthroat, make up 23% of all collisions. …

Detecting Stable Communities In Large Scale Networks, Sriram Srinivasan Nov 2013

Detecting Stable Communities In Large Scale Networks, Sriram Srinivasan

Student Work

A network is said to exhibit community structure if the nodes of the network can be easily grouped into groups of nodes, such that each group is densely connected internally but sparsely connected with other groups. Most real world networks exhibit community structure.

A popular technique for detecting communities is based on computing the modularity of the network. Modularity reflects how well the vertices in a group are connected as opposed to being randomly connected. We propose a parallel algorithm for detecting modularity in large networks.

However, all modularity based algorithms for detecting community structure are affected by the order …

Performance Analysis Of Non-Linear Adaptive Control Laws Using Hardware In The Loop Of An Unmanned Aerial System, Brendon Lyons Nov 2013

Performance Analysis Of Non-Linear Adaptive Control Laws Using Hardware In The Loop Of An Unmanned Aerial System, Brendon Lyons

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

In practical applications, an Unmanned Aerial System's (UAS) baseline performance is dictated by how well it can follow a given trajectory with limited stress on the actuators. However, these can be insufficient performance metrics when the UAS is allowed to adapt to an unpredicted external influence such as turbulence or actuation failure, while maintaining a satisfactory baseline performance.

In this thesis, different control laws based on the formation flight geometry problem, nonlinear dynamic inversion and an artificial immune system adaptive mechanism , are implemented in hardware-in-the-loop as a precursor for in-flight testing. These controllers are compared based on three performance …

Identity In Flux: Cinematic Destabilization In Narrative And Form, Eli Steenlage Nov 2013

Identity In Flux: Cinematic Destabilization In Narrative And Form, Eli Steenlage

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the current transitional moment in culture as cinema, identity, and a mediated society interact in a state of flux. My film project, Photostoria, was produced to addresses issues of memory, history, and identity in a digital, socially networked age, through the relationships of the characters/actors and through cinema's unique aesthetic language. The film uses a convergence and remediation of media to reflect the confusion and destabilization of identity formation in cultural terms. Specifically, time travel narratives create a metaphor for the experience of displacement in a hypermediated society. Photostoria is analyzed by way of narrative theory, new …
