Environmental Studies and Sciences

Strong feedback between global biodiversity loss and persistent, extreme rural poverty are major challenges in the face of concurrent food, energy, and environmental crises. This paper examines the role of industrial agricultural intensification and market integration as exogenous socio-ecological drivers of biodiversity loss and poverty traps in Latin America. We then analyze the potential of a food sovereignty framework, based on protecting the viability of a diverse agroecological matrix while supporting rural livelihoods and global food production. We review several successful examples of this approach, including ecological land reform in Brazil, agroforestry, milpa, and the uses of wild varieties in …

Experimental Evolution Of An Alternating Uni- And Multicellular Life Cycle In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, William C. Ratcliff, Matthew D. Herron, Kathryn Howell, Jennifer T. Pentz, Frank Rosenzweig, Michael Travisano

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The transition to multicellularity enabled the evolution of large, complex organisms, but early steps in this transition remain poorly understood. Here we show that multicellular complexity, including development from a single cell, can evolve rapidly in a unicellular organism that has never had a multicellular ancestor. We subject the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to conditions that favour multicellularity, resulting in the evolution of a multicellular life cycle in which clusters reproduce via motile unicellular propagules. While a single-cell genetic bottleneck during ontogeny is widely regarded as an adaptation to limit among-cell conflict, its appearance very early in this transition suggests that …

The Climate Change-Sustainable Development Nexus: A Proposal For Convergence, Alvin K. Leong Nov 2013

The Climate Change-Sustainable Development Nexus: A Proposal For Convergence, Alvin K. Leong

Dissertations & Theses

This thesis is founded on the proposition that climate change and sustainable development are inextricably linked with each other and form a “nexus” that should be understood in a pragmatic and holistic way. Accordingly, the climate change “problem” cannot be adequately addressed in “silos” or by traditional output control techniques but instead should be viewed as a multidimensional challenge that calls for transformative change in the world energy sector in light of the wider contexts of sustainability and social equity. This thesis observes that with the emergence of a post-2015 development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the United …

Rapid Prototyping Of A Map-Based Android App, Nicholas M. Flanagan, Eric Theller, Larry Theller

GIS Day

This project tries to provide a mobile phone-based solution app named “DriftWatch Pollinator Mapper” that will allow beekeepers, apiary inspectors, and association staff to easily register and map a hive into the Driftwatch system, where local pesticide applicators will notice it and be aware of the presence of pollinators. The purpose of the mobile application is to speed the process of registering beekeepers within DriftWatch, since many beekeepers have significant trouble using only web-based tools for registering their hive locations, it is hoped a mobile solution is more efficient.

Adam17-Mediated Processing Of Tnf-Α Expressed By Antiviral Effector Cd8+ T Cells Is Required For Severe T-Cell-Mediated Lung Injury, Matthew P. Deberge, Kenneth H. Ely, Guang-Shing Cheng, Richard I. Enelow Nov 2013

Adam17-Mediated Processing Of Tnf-Α Expressed By Antiviral Effector Cd8+ T Cells Is Required For Severe T-Cell-Mediated Lung Injury, Matthew P. Deberge, Kenneth H. Ely, Guang-Shing Cheng, Richard I. Enelow

Dartmouth Scholarship

Influenza infection in humans evokes a potent CD8+ T-cell response, which is important for clearance of the virus but may also exacerbate pulmonary pathology. We have previously shown in mice that CD8+ T-cell expression of TNF-a is required for severe and lethal lung injury following recognition of an influenza antigen expressed by alveolar epithelial cells. Since TNF-a is first expressed as a transmembrane protein that is then proteolytically processed to release a soluble form, we sought to characterize the role of TNF-a processing in CD8+ T-cell-mediated injury. In this study we observed that inhibition of ADAM17-mediated processing of TNF-a by …

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The purpose of this study is to investigate the biometrics technologies adopted by hotels and the perception of hotel managers toward biometric technology applications. A descriptive, cross sectional survey was developed based on extensive review of literature and expert opinions. The population for this survey was property level executive managers in the U.S. hotels. Members of American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) were selected as the target population for this study. The most frequent use of biometric technology is by hotel employees in the form of fingerprint scanning. Cost still seems to be one of the major barriers to adoption …

This project aimed to establish a subsurface microbial observatory in ultramafic rocks, by drilling into an actively serpentinizing peridotite body, characterizing cored rocks, and outfitting the boreholes for a program of long-term observation and experimentation to resolve the serpentinite-hosted subsurface biosphere. We completed drilling in August 2011, drilling two boreholes with core recovery and possibility for down-hole experimentation, and six smaller-diameter monitoring wells arrayed around the two primary holes, in the Coast Range ophiolite (CRO) locality in the UC-Davis McLaughlin Natural Reserve, Lower Lake, CA. Every effort was made during drilling to keep the cores and wells as free of …

Antioxidants Condition Pleiotropic Vascular Responses To Exogenous H2o2: Role Of Modulation Of Vascular Tp Receptors And The Heme Oxygenase System, Nitin Puri, Fan Zhang, Sumit R. Monu, Komal R. Sodhi, Lars Bellner, Brian D. Lamon, Yilun Zhang, Nader G. Abraham, Alberto Nasjletti Nov 2013

Antioxidants Condition Pleiotropic Vascular Responses To Exogenous H2o2: Role Of Modulation Of Vascular Tp Receptors And The Heme Oxygenase System, Nitin Puri, Fan Zhang, Sumit R. Monu, Komal R. Sodhi, Lars Bellner, Brian D. Lamon, Yilun Zhang, Nader G. Abraham, Alberto Nasjletti

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Aims: Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), a nonradical oxidant, is employed to ascertain the role of redox mechanisms in regulation of vascular tone. Where both dilation and constriction have been reported, we examined the hypothesis that the ability of H(2)O(2) to effect vasoconstriction or dilation is conditioned by redox mechanisms and may be modulated by antioxidants.

Results: Exogenous H(2)O(2) (0.1-10.0 μM), dose-dependently reduced the internal diameter of rat renal interlobular and 3rd-order mesenteric arteries (p<0.05). This response was obliterated in arteries pretreated with antioxidants, including tempol, pegylated superoxide dismutase (PEG-SOD), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and biliverdin (BV). However, as opposed to tempol or PEG-SOD, BHT & BV, antioxidants targeting radicals downstream of H(2)O(2), also uncovered vasodilation.

Innovations: Redox-dependent vasoconstriction to H(2)O(2) was blocked by inhibitors of cyclooxygenase (COX) (indomethacin-10 μM), thromboxane (TP) synthase (CGS13080-10 μM), and TP receptor antagonist (SQ29548-1 μM). However, H(2)O(2) …

Rigidity Analysis Of Protein Biological Assemblies And Periodic Crystal Structures, Filip Jagodzinski, Pamela Clark, Jessica Grant, Tiffany Liu, Samantha Monastra, Ileana Streinu Nov 2013

Rigidity Analysis Of Protein Biological Assemblies And Periodic Crystal Structures, Filip Jagodzinski, Pamela Clark, Jessica Grant, Tiffany Liu, Samantha Monastra, Ileana Streinu

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Background

We initiate in silico rigidity-theoretical studies of biological assemblies and small crystals for protein structures. The goal is to determine if, and how, the interactions among neighboring cells and subchains affect the flexibility of a molecule in its crystallized state. We use experimental X-ray crystallography data from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). The analysis relies on an effcient graph-based algorithm. Computational experiments were performed using new protein rigidity analysis tools available in the new release of our KINARI-Web server http://kinari.cs.umass.edu.

Results

We provide two types of results: on biological assemblies and on crystals. We found that when only isolated …
