The Composite Effect For Inverted Faces Is Reliable At Large Sample Sizes And Requires The Basic Face Configuration, Tirta Susilo, Constantin Rezlescu, Bradley Duchaine
The Composite Effect For Inverted Faces Is Reliable At Large Sample Sizes And Requires The Basic Face Configuration, Tirta Susilo, Constantin Rezlescu, Bradley Duchaine
Dartmouth Scholarship
Abstract The absence of the face composite effect (FCE) for inverted faces is often considered evidence that holistic processing operates only on upright faces. However, such absence might be explained by power issues: Most studies that have failed to find the inverted FCE tested 24 participants or less. Here we find that the inverted FCE exists reliably when we tested at least 60 participants. The inverted FCE was ∼ 18% the size of the upright FCE, and it was unaffected by testing order: It did not matter whether participants did the upright condition first (Experiment 1, n = 64) or …
Predictive Value Of Nuclear Excision Repair Genes For Cancer Survival, George R. Simon, Gerold Bepler
Predictive Value Of Nuclear Excision Repair Genes For Cancer Survival, George R. Simon, Gerold Bepler
USF Patents
Patients who have their cancer surgically removed are at risk for recurrence, even though currently free of disease. Lung cancer patients with higher activity of a nuclear excision repair gene called ERCC1 were at a lower risk for recurrence than patients with lower activity of ERCC1. Hence, it is possible to predict which patients are at a higher risk for recurrence after resection. This information can be used to design treatment strategies for patients determined to be at a higher risk for recurrence. Additionally, patients who are lower risk for recurrence can be saved the morbidity of further treatment.

The Effect Of Media Selection On The Membrane Characteristics And Fatty Acid Composition Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Seth Russell Johnson
The Effect Of Media Selection On The Membrane Characteristics And Fatty Acid Composition Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Seth Russell Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The cellular membrane is a vital structure to a microorganism and impacts important aspects of environmental regulation and growth. The physical structure of cellular membranes plays a key role in bacterial growth at low temperatures, membrane permeability and susceptibility to membrane active molecules as well as broader aspects of bacterial physiology and pathogenesis. Mueller Hinton medium is the required medium for antimicrobial susceptibility testing in the US, but there are many other types of media used in staphylococcal research. Different media vary in their nutrient compositions, and the effect of media composition on bacterial physiology is incompletely understood. The aim …

Troika Of Single Particle Tracking Programing: Snr Enhancement, Particle Identification, And Mapping, Lydia Kisley
Faculty Scholarship
Single particle tracking (SPT) techniques provide a microscopic approach to probe in vivo and in vitro structure and reactions. Automatic analysis of SPT data with high efficiency and accuracy spurs the development of SPT algorithms. In this perspective, we review a range of available techniques used in SPT analysis programs. In addition, we present an example SPT program step-by-step to provide a guide so that researchers can use, modify, and/or write a SPT program for their own purposes. © 2014 the Owner Societies.

Roles Of Jnrap2.6-Like From The Transition Zone Of Black Walnut In Hormone Signaling, Zhonglian Huang, Peng Zhao, Jose Medina, Richard Meilan, Keith E. Woeste
Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications
An EST sequence, designated JnRAP2-like, was isolated from tissue at the heartwood/sapwood transition zone (TZ) in black walnut (Juglans nigra L). The deduced amino acid sequence of JnRAP2-like protein consists of a single AP2-containing domain with significant similarity to conserved AP2/ERF DNA-binding domains in other species. Based on multiple sequence alignment, JnRAP2-like appears to be an ortholog of RAP2.6L (At5g13330), which encodes an ethylene response element binding protein in Arabidopsis thaliana. Real-time PCR revealed that the JnRAP2-like was expressed most abundantly in TZ of trees harvested in fall when compared with other xylem tissues harvested in the …
Microbes In Nature Are Limited By Carbon And Energy: The Starving-Survival Lifestyle In Soil And Consequences For Estimating Microbial Rates, John E. Hobbie, Erik A. Hobbie
Microbes In Nature Are Limited By Carbon And Energy: The Starving-Survival Lifestyle In Soil And Consequences For Estimating Microbial Rates, John E. Hobbie, Erik A. Hobbie
Faculty Publications
Understanding microbial transformations in soils is important for predicting future carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling. This review questions some methods of assessing one key microbial process, the uptake of labile organic compounds. First, soil microbes have a starving-survival life style of dormancy, arrested activity, and low activity. Yet they are very abundant and remain poised to completely take up all substrates that become available. As a result, dilution assays with the addition of labeled substrates cannot be used. When labeled substrates are transformed into 14CO2, the first part of the biphasic release follows metabolic rules and is not affected by …

Glial Pathology In Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy, Kumiko Ijichi
Glial Pathology In Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy, Kumiko Ijichi
Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation was to examine the pathogenic potential of microglia in globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD). We determined that psychosine, the pathogenic lipid toxin that accumulates in GLD, induced microglial transformation to globoid cells in vitro. Psychosine also induced matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3 in cultured glia. This mirrored the elevated expression of MMP-3 in the central nervous system (CNS) of twitcher mice, a murine model of GLD. Pharmacological inhibition or genetic ablation of MMP-3 blocked psychosine-induced globoid cell formation in vitro. These findings indicate that MMP-3 mediated psychosine-induced globoid cell formation. These findings were the first to …
High Throughput Data Framework Based Characterization And Evaluations Of Thermobifida Fusca For Industrial Applications, Niti Vanee
Theses and Dissertations
Cellulolytic organisms are being heavily studied for the production of biofuels, given that lignocellulosic biomass would be a cheap, abundant, and renewable starting material for chemical production. A challenge with cellulolytic microorganisms is that they are typically poorly characterized and often difficult to genetically manipulate. Our group focuses characterization and engineering of a thermophilic aerobic, cellulolytic actinobacterium, Thermobifida fusca. The wider range of optimal temperature and pH for the growth condition, besides the secretion of several group of cellulases, have made this microbe a potentially efficient host system for industrially application. After the development of first ever successful genetic manipulation …
A Unique Support For Sexual-Minority Identity Development: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of A Long-Term Formal Mentoring Relationship Between An Adult And A Youth From The Gay Community, Christian L. Rummell
Dissertations and Theses
An important need exists to build a baseline understanding of the phenomenon of formal mentoring relationships involving adults and youth from the gay community. During the formative years when gay adolescents navigate through the process of understanding, defining, accepting, and sharing their identity as a sexual minority, they are often faced with high levels of environmental risks, including victimization, stress, and negative social sanctions by others. Formal mentoring has been recommended as a potential strategy to offer unique one-to-one support to gay youth that can help to foster resilience and a range of positive outcomes, including strengthening processes involved in …

Understanding Long-Term Changes In Species Abundance Using A Niche-Based Approach, P Helaouët, G Beaugrand, M Edwards
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
One of the major challenges to understanding population changes in ecology for assessment purposes is the difficulty in evaluating the suitability of an area for a given species. Here we used a new simple approach able to faithfully predict through time the abundance of two key zooplanktonic species by focusing on the relationship between the species' environmental preferences and their observed abundances. The approach is applied to the marine copepods Calanus finmarchicus and C. helgolandicus as a case study characterising the multidecadal dynamics of the North Sea ecosystem. We removed all North Sea data from the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) …

Middle Mississippi River Islands: Historical Distribution, Restoration Planning, And Biological Importance, Teresa Cecilia Allen
Middle Mississippi River Islands: Historical Distribution, Restoration Planning, And Biological Importance, Teresa Cecilia Allen
Dissertations
The Middle Mississippi River’s (MMR’s) hydrology and sedimentation patterns have been altered. These activities contribute to loss of backwaters, islands, secondary channels, and reduced biodiversity. The Fish and Wildlife Service included reasonable and prudent alternatives (RPAs) in its Biological Opinion for the Operation and Maintenance of the Nine-Foot Channel Navigation Project. These RPAs mandate dike notching and island building to increase habitat diversity. My first goal was to examine changes in the number and relative location of islands from 1797 to 2003. I found that the total number of islands increased, the number of central islands decreased, and the number …

Mixed-Level Response Surface Designs Via A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm, P. Angelopoulos, C. Koukouvinos, D. E. Simos, A. Skountzou
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Response surface methodology is widely used for developing, improving and optimizing processes in various fields. In this paper, we present a general algorithmic method for constructing 2q14q2 mixed-level designs in order to explore and optimize response surfaces with respect to D-efficiency, where the predictor variables are at two and four equally spaced levels, by utilizing a hybrid genetic algorithm. Emphasis is given on various properties that arise from the implementation of the genetic algorithm, such as using genetic operators as local optimizers and the representation of the four levels of the design with a 2-bit Gray Code. We applied the …

Bayesian Inference And Prediction Using Progressive First-Failure Censored From Generalized Pareto Distribution, M. A. W. Mahmoud, Ahmed A. Soliman, Ahmed H. Abd-Ellah, Rashad M. El-Sagheer
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
This paper describes the Bayesian inference and prediction of the generalized Pareto (GP) distribution for progressive firstfailure censored data. We consider the Bayesian inference under a squared error loss function. We propose to apply Gibbs sampling procedure to drawMarkov ChianMonte Carlo (MCMC) samples, and they have in turn, been used to compute the Bayes estimates with the help of importance sampling technique. We have performed a simulation study in order to compare the proposed Bayes estimators with the maximum likelihood estimators. We further consider two sample Bayes prediction to predicting future order statistics and upper record values from generalized Pareto …

In-Situ Quantification Of The Interfacial Rheological Response Of Bacterial Biofilms To Environmental Stimuli, Patrick Rühs, Lukas Böni, Gerald Fuller, R. Inglis, Peter Fischer
Biology Department Faculty Works
Understanding the numerous factors that can affect biofilm formation and stability remain poorly understood. One of the major limitations is the accurate measurement of biofilm stability and cohesiveness in real-time when exposed to changing environmental conditions. Here we present a novel method to measure biofilm strength: interfacial rheology. By culturing a range of bacterial biofilms on an air-liquid interface we were able to measure their viscoelastic growth profile during and after biofilm formation and subsequently alter growth conditions by adding surfactants or changing the nutrient composition of the growth medium. We found that different bacterial species had unique viscoelastic growth …
Sabbatical Leave Proposal, Toni Burkhalter
Sabbatical Leave Proposal, Toni Burkhalter
Sabbaticals
Wellness is commonly defined as the "absence of disease." However, wellness actually consists of six separate dimensions, each a vital component to the health of an individual. The dimension of wellness that most closely relates to my passions and position at Parkland College is physical wellness. The goal of the anticipated sabbatical is to investigate and experience the three dimensions of physical wellness: medical system, nutrition and fitness. The proposed sabbatical will allow me to experience personal/professional rejuvenation and improved physical wellness.

ANDRILL Research and Publications
Exploration of the lower surface of the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica by the Submersible Capable of under-Ice Navigation and Imaging (SCINI) remotely operated vehicle discovered a new species of sea anemone living in this previously undocumented ecosystem. This discovery was a significant outcome of the Coulman High Project’s geophysical and environmental fieldwork in 2010-2011 as part of the ANDRILL (ANtarctic geologic DRILLing) program. Edwardsiella andrillae n. sp., lives with most of its column in the ice shelf, with only the tentacle crown extending into the seawater below. In addition to being the only Antarctic representative of the genus, Edwardsiella …
