Leaf Epidermis Morphology Of Some Onosma (Boraginaceae) Species From Turkey, Öznur Ergen Akçi̇n, Gülcan Şenel, Yaşar Akçi̇n
Turkish Journal of Botany
The leaf epidermis of 14 Onosma L. species was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The leaf characters studied showed some variations. Morphologic features of the epidermal cells such as shape, structure of the anticlinal walls, stomatal size, outer stomatal rims, peristomatal rims, and apertures were summarised in the examined taxa. It was found that these characters are variable in the genus but usually they are stable within a species. Epidermal cells of the investigated taxa are polygonal, elongated, or irregular. Anticlinal walls of the epidermal cells are generally straight to curved and repand. Apertures are long, ellipsoidal, …

Comparative Morphological, Epidermal, And Anatomical Studies Of Pinus Roxburghii Needles At Different Altitudes In The North-West Indian Himalayas, Satyendra Prakash Tiwari, Pradeep Kumar, Deepika Yadav, Devendra Kumar Chauhan
Turkish Journal of Botany
The aim of the present study was to understand the ecological adaptation of Pinus roxburghii Sarg. in the North-West Himalayan region. P. roxburghii needles showed morphological, epidermal, and anatomical variation at different altitudes. Needle length was negatively correlated with altitude. Stomatal characters like stomatal density, stomatal index, and guard cell lengths were found to be affected by environmental factors and showed a direct correlation with altitude. The results showed that potential conductance index was dependent on the climatic conditions of the habitat. The anatomical properties of needles exhibited variation from lower to higher elevation, especially in the number and position …

Size-Fractionated Phytoplankton And Nutrient Dynamics In The Inner Part Of İzmir Bay, Eastern Aegean Sea, Serkan Kükrer, Hasan Baha Büyükişik
Turkish Journal of Botany
İzmir Bay has been one of most polluted bays of the Mediterranean for a long time. When the 'Big Channel Project' was completed in 2000, sewage flow into the bay ended. Hence, the influence of creeks, which are the only source of water transportation to the inner bay, was investigated in the current study. Monthly samples of creek water and seawater were taken. Basic water quality variables and nutrients were measured. In addition, the phytoplankton community was arrayed into size fractions to assess the contribution of each size fraction to biomass and pigment concentrations. Analyses showed that the creek waters …

Weed Flora In The Reclaimed Lands Along The Northern Sector Of The Nile Valley In Egypt, Monier Abd El-Ghani, Ashraf Soliman, Rim Hamdy, Ebtesam Bennoba
Turkish Journal of Botany
Deserts comprise about 95% of the total land surface of Egypt; therefore, their potential for production must be assessed. Weed communities are mainly affected by the environment, and studies may increase our knowledge of the relationship among the weed flora, soil properties, crop rotation, soil management, fertiliser usage, and weed control. The area under study is one of the most recently reclaimed lands. The recorded 150 species in the monitored 19 sites were distributed within 33 families. The species-rich families were: Poaceae (31), Asteraceae (23), Brassicaceae (13), Chenopodiaceae (12), and Fabaceae (12). Chorological analysis revealed that the widely distributed species …

Vegetation And Soil Relationships In The Inland Wadi Ecosystem Of Central Eastern Desert, Egypt, Fawzy Salama, Monier Abd El-Ghani, Noha El-Tayeh
Turkish Journal of Botany
In January 2010, torrential rains that had suddenly swept away a limited area in the Eastern Desert facing Qena Province in Upper Egypt resulted in the enriching of the vegetation of some extremely dry wadis at this location. A vegetation survey carried out shortly after this event, in April, revealed the prevalence of annuals in considerable abundance, which are hardly recognisable in such usually dry habitats. The normally scarce perennial vegetation had flourished, too. A total of 32 species, 11 annuals, and 21 perennials that belong to 27 genera and 15 families were recorded. The life-form spectrum in the present …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Artemisinin, produced in very low amounts in Artemisia annua L. plants, is one of the most effective drugs in treating malaria. In this study, the effect of exogenous applications of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and 2-isopentenyladenine (2-iP) in artemisinin production and the main genes of its biosynthesis pathway within a 1-week time period were investigated. Both MeJA and 2-iP increased artemisinin content, but no correlation was found between gene expression and its content. In plants treated with 2-iP, despite increased gene expression following elicitor application, downregulation of gene expression was also observed, which might be attributed to the negative effects of …

Cadmium-Induced Structural Disturbances In Pisum Sativum Leaves Are Alleviated By Nitric Oxide, Tuan Anh Tran, Valya Vassileva, Petar Petrov, Losanka Petrova Popova
Turkish Journal of Botany
In the present study, the protective effect of nitric oxide (NO) against Cd-induced structural disturbances in pea (Pisum sativum) leaves was investigated. Cadmium treatment resulted in a decreased leaf size and thickness of the lamina, reduced intercellular spaces in the mesophyll, small pavement cells, and a high density of stomata. These abnormalities were partially or fully reversed by a simultaneous application of Cd and the NO donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP). The concentration of 1000 µM SNP was very effective in counteracting the adverse effects of Cd and resulted in leaf structural parameters close to those of the control leaves. These …

New Staining Technique For Fungal-Infected Plant Tissues, Joao Paulo Rodrigues Marques, Marli Kasue Misaki Soares, Beatriz Appezzato-Da-Glória
Turkish Journal of Botany
The use of histological techniques, combined with the use of dyes, facilitates the visualisation of fungi present in tissues, allowing the details of plant-pathogen interactions in many different pathosystems to be revealed. The purpose of this study is to present a new double-staining method that uses cotton blue and safranin to identify fungal structures in plant tissues. With this staining method, the fungal hyphae stain blue and plant cell walls stain orange. The new method was tested on 2 pathosystems. The technique distinguishes between fungal and plant cell walls, giving it great practical utility. This is a staining technique that …

Comparative Anatomy Of Elaiophores And Oil Secretion In The Genus Gomesa (Orchidaceae), Natalia Elva Gomiz, Juan Pablo Torretta, Sandra Silvina Aliscioni
Turkish Journal of Botany
Oils are atypical floral rewards in Orchidaceae and are produced by epidermal glands called elaiophores. Flowers of many members of the subtribe Oncidiinae either produce oil or mimic oil-producing flowers of Malpighiaceae. We focus our research on 3 species of Gomesa, namely, G. flexuosa, G. riograndensis, and G. varicosa in order to investigate the presence of elaiophores, their micromorphology and internal structure, and the process of oil secretion. Elaiophores were located using Sudan III and their internal and external features examined using light and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The presence of elaiophores was confirmed for regions of calli that are …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Leaf characteristics provide many useful clues for taxonomy. We used a back-propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) and C-support vector machines (C-SVMs) to classify 47 species from 3 sections of genus Camellia (16 from sect. Chrysanthae, 16 from sect. Tuberculata, and 15 from sect. Paracamellia). The classification model was constructed based on 7 leaf anatomy attributes including, area of adaxial epidermal cell, thickness of adaxial epidermal cell, thickness of palisade parenchyma, thickness of total leaf, thickness of spongy parenchyma, thickness of abaxial epidermal cell, and area of abaxial epidermal cell. Model parameters of C-SVM, comprising regularization parameter (C) and kernel parameter …
Evaluation Of A New Method For Large-Scale And Gene-Targeted Next Generation Dna Sequencing In Nonmodel Species, Ted Cosart
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The efficient method called exon capture provides for sequencing genes genome-wide, targeting candidate genes, and sampling specific exons within genes. Although developed for model species with available whole genome sequences, the method can capture exons in nonmodel species using the genomic resources of a related model species. How close the relatives must be for effective exon capture is not known. The work herein demonstrates cross-taxa capture in ungulates, using the domestic cow genome as a reference. It also describes a computer program designed for collecting exon sequences for exon capture, allowing users to set per-gene and overall base pair (bp) …
P-Glycoprotein Transport In Pesticide Pharmacokinetics And Toxicity: Investigating A Link To Parkinson's Disease Risk, Sarah Elizabeth Lacher
P-Glycoprotein Transport In Pesticide Pharmacokinetics And Toxicity: Investigating A Link To Parkinson's Disease Risk, Sarah Elizabeth Lacher
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Variation in the gene that encodes P-glycoprotein (P-gp), ABCB1, has been associated with Parkinson's disease risk. The aim of my research was to evaluate P-gp transport of pesticides that have been associated with Parkinson's disease as a mechanism for the pharmacogenomic association. To facilitate this aim, a combination of models was utilized to determine P-gp transport of the pesticides diazinon, dieldrin, endosulfan, maneb, MPP+, paraquat, and rotenone. Paraquat pharmacokinetics and brain accumulation were measured in both FVB wildtype and mdr1a(-/-)/1b(-/-) mice. P-gp deficient mice displayed no changes in paraquat brain accumulation, indicating that P-gp does not mediate paraquat disposition. I …
The Law Of The Body, Meredith M. Render
The Law Of The Body, Meredith M. Render
Emory Law Journal
In the absence of clarity about the legal status of the human body, courts have constructed a collection of circumstantially defined categories for resolving the question of human body ownership and use. This patchwork approach is awkward, unwieldy, incoherent, and, by many lights, ultimately unjust. Many able minds have been applied to critiquing the distributive consequences of a regime in which we cannot-at any point in our lives-"own" our own bodies (or its constituent parts), but other people can and do. But what has been missing from these conversations is a conceptual foundation for understanding the living human body as …
Is Circumcision Legal?, Peter W, Adler
Is Circumcision Legal?, Peter W, Adler
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
An important, divisive, and unanswered question of American law - and indeed of international law - is whether it is legal to circumcise healthy boys. American medical association and experts assert that circumcision is a common, safe, and relatively painlesss procedure with many medical benefits that exceed the risks. They argue that insurance should pay for it. Some religious organizations argue that circumcision is a sacred religious ritual. In any event, proponents claim that parents have a general and religious right to make the circumcision decision. They can point to the fact that no physician has ever been held liable …

Economics As Applied Ethics: Value Judgements In Welfare Economics By Wilfred Beckerman (Book Review), Jonathan B. Wight
Economics As Applied Ethics: Value Judgements In Welfare Economics By Wilfred Beckerman (Book Review), Jonathan B. Wight
Economics Faculty Publications
This is a well-written textbook geared to advanced undergraduate or graduate students of economics, many of whom are largely and regrettably innocent of the ethical problems inherent in conventional economic analysis. It compares with Daniel M. Hausman and Michael S. McPherson’s Economic analysis, moral philosophy, and public policy (2006) and Johan J. Graafland’s Economics, ethics, and the market: introduction and applications (2007). The book presupposes a fair amount of knowledge in both economics and ethics (it does not intend to be a primer in either). The author is professor emeritus at Balliol College, Oxford and honorary visiting professor of economics …
