Dual-Phase Mixed Ion And Electron Conducting Co2-Selective Permeation Membranes, Lingling Zhang
Dual-Phase Mixed Ion And Electron Conducting Co2-Selective Permeation Membranes, Lingling Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Fossil fuels are the dominant energy source powering our modern society. However, burning fossil fuels emits carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas that can cause climate change and ultimately threaten the survival of humanity. Effectively mitigating CO2 emissions from the use of fossil fuels has become an intense subject of scientific research as well as political debate in recent years. The current mainstream technical approach to achieving that goal is to curb the emission of CO2 by capturing CO2 at point-sources and geologically storing it. The CO2 separation and capture process, the first step toward the ultimate storage of CO2, …

Estimation Of Aerosolized Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Concentrations From Wastewater Treatment Facilities Using Spatially-Based Dispersion Modeling, Renee Nichole Dickman
Estimation Of Aerosolized Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Concentrations From Wastewater Treatment Facilities Using Spatially-Based Dispersion Modeling, Renee Nichole Dickman
Theses and Dissertations
Pathogenic bacteria can develop resistance to antibiotics to which they were previously sensitive, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality worldwide [1]. The increase in drug resistance in bacteria is an emerging public health concern. The activated sludge tanks of wastewater treatment plants are known sources of antibiotic resistant bacteria. These resistant bacteria can become aerosolized and disperse downwind. Using previously sampled aerosol concentrations and meteorological data, a Gaussian dispersion model was developed to estimate the concentration downwind from a selected wastewater treatment facility. The emission rate was calculated to be 7,941 CFU/m²/sec ± 2,149 CFU/m²/sec. This value was used in …

Development Of Proteomic Characterization And Speciation Techniques Utilizing Tryptic Peptides With Maldi-Tof Ms And Lc-Esi Ms-Ms, Jennifer Marie Kooken
Theses and Dissertations
The characterization of microbes which can be opportunists and pathogens (e.g., methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)) is important in understanding and potentially treating diseases caused by various bacterial species. Common genera found in the human skin micro-biome include Micrococcus and Staphylococcus, but there only a limited number of tests to differentiate these genera and/or species. My research reflects methods development from distinguishing one closely related genera from another and then expanded to species identification. Tryptic peptides were analyzed by MALDI TOF MS and the mass profiles compared with those of a reference strain in both genus and species identification. Aconitate …
Effects Of Dna Damage And Cdk Inhibitors On The Nucleoli, Vineet Garg
Effects Of Dna Damage And Cdk Inhibitors On The Nucleoli, Vineet Garg
Theses and Dissertations
The nucleolus is the primary site of ribogenesis and consists of three compartments, namely, fibrillar center (FC), dense fibrillar component (DFC) and granular component (GC). Recent studies have observed a novel structure distinct from these three compartments which forms in the nucleolus upon DNA damage called Intranucleolar body (INoB). Previous studies in our laboratory have found INoBs forming in HT1080 fibrosarcoma cell lines after ectopic overexpression of damage-inducible cell cycle inhibitor p21. This INoB formation has been observed to be decreased by Senexin A which is an inhibitor of transcription regulating kinases CDK8/CDK19.
Here we show that INoB formation correlates …
A Novel Approach To The Design Of Selective Inhibitors For Cell Cycle Cyclin Dependent Kinases, Tracy Perkins
A Novel Approach To The Design Of Selective Inhibitors For Cell Cycle Cyclin Dependent Kinases, Tracy Perkins
Theses and Dissertations
CDK2/cyclin A and CDK4/cyclin D1 are proven targets for cancer drug discovery. The development of novel CDK inhibitors, with high selectivity, are being investigated by targeting the cyclin binding groove (CBG) located on the cyclin, the regulatory subunit of CDK. The CBG is a shallow area that is involved in signaling and the inhibition of cell cycle CDKs via endogenous tumor suppressors. Currently, non-peptidic inhibitors are being developed based on the recognition amino acid sequence, HAKRRLIF, of the C-terminal peptide sequence of the CDK inhibitor p21WAF1. Computational design and the utilization of non-natural amino acids are being proposed to identify …
The Effect Of Αct-1 Peptide On Bone Marrow Stromal Cells Following Injury, Adam Clay Vandergriff
The Effect Of Αct-1 Peptide On Bone Marrow Stromal Cells Following Injury, Adam Clay Vandergriff
Theses and Dissertations
Connexin43 (Cx43) is a component of gap junctions and is involved in intercel- lular signaling following injury to tissues. The carboxyl terminus of Cx43 binds to the PDZ2 domain of ZO-1 in order to form gap junction plaques and connect to the cytoskeleton. A biomimetic peptide known as αCT-1, replicating the last 9 amino acids found in the carboxyl terminus of CX43, has been shown to improve wound healing by preferentially binding to the PDZ2 domain of ZO-1. A possible mecha- nism for its action is through the Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transformation (EMT). Scratch assays were performed on rat bone marrow stromal …
Red, Yellow, Blue, Lauren Elizabeth Eyler
Red, Yellow, Blue, Lauren Elizabeth Eyler
Theses and Dissertations
Red, Yellow, Blue is a hybrid, metafictional novel/autobiography. The work explores the life of Ellis, Lotte, Diana John-John and Lauren as they wander through a variety of circumstances, which center on loss and grief. As the novel develops, the author loses control over her intentionality; the character's she claims to know fuse together, leaving the reader to wonder if Lauren is synonymous with Ellis or if Diana is actually Lotte disguised by a signifier. Red, Yellow, Blue questions the author's as well as the reader's ability to understand the transformation that occurs in an individual during long periods of grief …

Associations Between The Perceived And Built Food Environment, Timothy L. Barnes
Associations Between The Perceived And Built Food Environment, Timothy L. Barnes
Theses and Dissertations
Neighborhood food environments have been associated with dietary intake and obesity. Measures of the food environment have typically been characterized with geographic information systems (GIS)-based measures, however, the use of perception-based measures of the food environment have increased in frequency. Few studies have fully examined the relationship between perceptions and GIS-based measures of the food environment, especially considering the congruency between perceived and GIS-based presence of specific retail food outlets, nor the relationship between food outlets and perceived availability of healthy foods or fast food opportunities.
Telephone survey data from 705 residents in an eight-county region of South Carolina were …
Food Environment And Birth Outcomes In South Carolina, Xiaoguang Ma
Food Environment And Birth Outcomes In South Carolina, Xiaoguang Ma
Theses and Dissertations
An increasing number of studies examined the association between neighborhood characteristics and birth outcomes. However, the results can be difficult to compare because of the variety of indicators used to characterize the neighborhood. As an important neighborhood characteristic, the food environment is associated with residents' nutrition status, diet quality, and related health outcomes. In addition, the food environment has been found to influence women's diet quality during pregnancy, which is a key factor in predicting birth outcomes. However to date, studies on food environment and birth outcomes are extremely limited.
This study examined the association between food environment (evaluated by …

Associations Between Resting Metabolic Rate And Energy Storage In Young Adults, Robin Shook
Associations Between Resting Metabolic Rate And Energy Storage In Young Adults, Robin Shook
Theses and Dissertations
At the most basic level obesity is the result of a chronic imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. However, the exact etiology is considerably more complex and may involve a variety of physiological and behavioral factors. Metabolic disturbances, including reduced fat oxidation as measured by the respiratory quotient (RQ) and reduced resting metabolic rate (RMR), have been identified as possible predictors of changes in body weight and body composition. RMR represents the largest component (60-80%) of caloric expenditure that contributes to total daily energy expenditure in humans and has high inter-person variability (±25%) but not within individuals (<±5%). The cause of this variability between individuals and the exact role of RMR and RQ in determining body weight and body composition are uncertain.

Trophic Response To Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Copper In Tidal Flats Of North Inlet, South Carolina, Leslie Lynn Muggelberg
Trophic Response To Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Copper In Tidal Flats Of North Inlet, South Carolina, Leslie Lynn Muggelberg
Theses and Dissertations
The trophic link between benthic microalgae (BMA) and fiddler crabs is critical for the ecosystem functioning of estuaries and alterations in this linkage by anthropogenic activities could have cascading impacts on food webs and biogeochemical cycling in these sensitive habitats. Singular and interactive effects of two common pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and copper (Cu), were investigated by exposing field collected sediment communities to the contaminants and measuring changes in BMA biomass and community composition in a bioassay design. The consequential impacts on the food web were then explored by examining the effects of PAHs and copper …
Effect Of Matrix Modulus On Cancer Stem Cells And Tumorsphere Formation In Three-Dimensional-Engineered Matrix, Samaneh Kamali Sarvestani
Effect Of Matrix Modulus On Cancer Stem Cells And Tumorsphere Formation In Three-Dimensional-Engineered Matrix, Samaneh Kamali Sarvestani
Theses and Dissertations
Maintenance of cancer stem cells (CSCs) is regulated by their microenvironment. As cancer cells are affected by many factors in their microenvironment, a major challenge is to isolate the effect of a specific factor on cancer stem cells (CSCs) while keeping other factors unchanged. We have developed a synthetic inert 3D polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) gel culture system as a unique tool to study the effect of microenvironmental factors on CSCs response. Synthetic hydrogels provide the flexibility to design three-dimensional (3D) matrices to isolate and study individual factors in the tumor microenvironment.
The objective of this work was to investigate …

The Anti-Angiogenic Effects Of Sparstolonin B, Henry Rhodes Bateman
Theses and Dissertations
Sparstolonin B (SsnB) is a novel bioreactive compound isolated from Sparganium stoloniferum, an herb historically used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as an anti-tumor agent. SsnB has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties, inhibiting Toll-like receptor mediated inflammation in isolated macrophages and in mice. Angiogenesis, the process of new capillary formation from existing blood vessels, is dysregulated in many pathological disorders, including atherosclerosis, diabetic retinopathy, and tumor growth. The goal of the project was to investigate the anti-angiogenic effects of SsnB.
The first part of the project utilized in vitro functional assays to study how SsnB affected endothelial cells. SsnB inhibited endothelial cell tube …
Impact Of Physical Activity In The Prevention Of Colorectal Cancer, Sarah Ashley Barnes
Impact Of Physical Activity In The Prevention Of Colorectal Cancer, Sarah Ashley Barnes
Theses and Dissertations
This review evaluates the current understanding of research on the impact of physical activity in the prevention of colorectal cancer. Current biological mechanisms implicated in physical activity and colorectal cancer risk reduction are blood glucose regulation, insulin sensitivity, leptin and adiponectin profiles, inflammation as well as secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC), an exercise induced myokine. Recent literature indicates that 30-60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a day is effective against colorectal cancer development, and there is convincing evidence of aerobic exercise as differently beneficial in recruiting mechanisms identified as preventative against colorectal cancer. This article provides …

Exploring The Importance Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Of Hspa9 In Dna Of Sarcoma Patients, Christine M. Hebert
Honors Theses and Capstones
The aim of this project was to identify genetic variants that may influence the risk and progression of sarcoma through targeted genotyping of HSPA9 gene. It is important to look at genetic variants in DNA samples because if a variant is determined to be more likely than another, a screening for the particular variant can be done to identify a patient’s risk of sarcoma. The study population was sarcoma patients from the International Sarcoma Kindred Study. These patients had no mutations in p53 or MDM2. Genotyping data from the HapMap project (hapmap.org) for HSPA9 was used to identify the polymorphisms …

Evaluating The Impact Of Fishery-Related Claw Removal On Diet, Consumption Rate, Energetics And Reproduction In The Florida Stone Crab (Menippe Spp.), Jessica Mary Hogan
Evaluating The Impact Of Fishery-Related Claw Removal On Diet, Consumption Rate, Energetics And Reproduction In The Florida Stone Crab (Menippe Spp.), Jessica Mary Hogan
Theses and Dissertations
Many global fisheries are overexploited and working towards the development of sustainable fishing methods. Claw based crab fisheries, such as the Florida stone crab (Menippe mercenaria, M. adina, and hybrids) fishery, use unique fishing techniques that reduce the overall mortality of harvested organisms. For example, the Florida stone crab fishery is regulated by requiring that fisherman only harvest crab claws and requires that fishermen return the live crab to the water following harvesting. This process takes advantage of the ability of crabs to autotomize and regenerate their claws, and enables crabs to re-enter the fishery in subsequent years if they …
Working Memory-Learning Condition Interactions: Proficiency In L2 Russian Under Naturalistic And Formal Learning Conditions, Marc Canner
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the relationships between working memory (WM) and three commonly used learning strategies or conditions in the nature of proficiency among adult L2 Russian learners. Based on the aptitude-learning condition interaction framework articulated by Robinson (2002b), the study identifies two types of relationships between the fixed variables of working memory and learning condition, and four variables related to second language proficiency (SLP) in Russian: accuracy, fluency, overall general proficiency or `native-likeness', and the occurrence of potentially fossilized forms in speech. Three main learning contexts were identified, including strictly naturalistic conditions resulting from immersion …
Tidal Variability Of Waves And Currents On A Caribbean Barrier Reef, Chelsea Wegner
Tidal Variability Of Waves And Currents On A Caribbean Barrier Reef, Chelsea Wegner
Theses and Dissertations
The modern framework of Caribbean coral reefs is a product of resilient structures that have survived extreme variations in sea level for the past 18,000 years. However, the added influences of anthropogenic pressures, including ocean acidification, overfishing, pollution and bleaching make the future response to sea level rise uncertain. Carbonate production in the Caribbean is no longer at these historic rates and reefs may not be able to keep pace with the projected increases in sea level. This could have dramatic impacts on the hydrodynamics in coral reef environments, as reef morphology strongly influences these processes. Coral reefs are regarded …
