Quantitative Analysis Of Neurotransmitter Pathways Under Steady State Conditions - A Perspective, Arthur J L Cooper
Quantitative Analysis Of Neurotransmitter Pathways Under Steady State Conditions - A Perspective, Arthur J L Cooper
NYMC Faculty Publications
In a contribution to this Research Topic Erkki Somersalo and Daniela Calvetti carried out a mathematical analysis of neurotransmitter pathways in brain, modeling compartmental nitrogen flux among several major participants - ammonia, glutamine, glutamate, GABA, and selected amino acids. This analysis is important because cerebral nitrogen metabolism is perturbed in many diseases, including liver disease and inborn errors of the urea cycle. These diseases result in an elevation of blood ammonia, which is neurotoxic. Here, a brief description is provided of the discovery of cerebral metabolic compartmentation of nitrogen metabolism - a key feature of cerebral glutamate-glutamine and GABA-glutamine cycles. …

Modeling Dipyrenylpropane, Steven Bray, David Busath
Modeling Dipyrenylpropane, Steven Bray, David Busath
Journal of Undergraduate Research
1,3-di(1-pyrenyl)propane(hereinafter dipyrenylpropane) has proven very useful as a fluorescence probe in determining fluidity and monitoring phase transitions in biological membrane systems.1 By virtue of its structure, dipyrenylpropane may fluoresce light in an excimer or a monomer configuration. Each configuration fluoresces light at a different wavelength, thus allowing us to monitor the excimer-to-monomer intensity ratio. The excimer form occurs when, as the light is absorbed, the pyrene branches come within close proximity, transferring energy and fluorescing light back at a different wavelength.2 The monomer configuration is defined by the lack of energy transfer and a consistent fluorescence wavelength. Therefore, as membrane …

Phylogeny Of Siphonaptera In Relation To Mecoptera And The Snow Fleas Using Molecular Data From The Mitochondrial Gene Cytochrome Oxidase Ii, Sonia Bake, Dr. Michael Whiting
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The intent of this study is to determine the phylogeny of the order Siphonaptera (fleas) and their relationship to the order Mecoptera (scorpion flies) including the Boreidae family (snow fleas) which have traditionally been placed with the scorpion flies. A study is being conducted using molecular data from several genes and morphology to design a more accurate phylogeny for these orders. This study uses the data from a single gene, cytochrome oxidase II or COII, to create a tree for several species from these orders.
The Effect Of Cytokinin And Abscisic Acid On Iron Stress Response In Tomatoes, Mark L. Bernards, Dr. Von D. Jolley
The Effect Of Cytokinin And Abscisic Acid On Iron Stress Response In Tomatoes, Mark L. Bernards, Dr. Von D. Jolley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Iron is an essential nutrient for healthy plant growth. Dicotyledenous plants respond to insufficient iron with a variety of mechanisms. For example, they may release hydrogen ions or exude reductants (such as caffeic acid) from the roots to acidify the rhizosphere, reduce Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ through enzymes at the root surface, and accumulate organic acids (primarily citrate) in the roots (Brown, 1978). Iron-efficient tomato T3238FER responds to iron stress signals in the roots by activating these mechanisms. Iron-inefficient T3238fer does not activate these mechanisms when subjected to iron stress.

Diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease; however, the mechanisms through which diabetes impairs homeostasis of the vasculature have not been completely elucidated. The endothelium interacts with circulating blood through the surface glycocalyx layer, which serves as a mechanosensor/transducer of fluid shear forces leading to biomolecular responses. Atherosclerosis localizes typically in regions of low or disturbed shear stress, but in diabetics, the distribution is more diffuse, suggesting that there is a fundamental difference in the way cells sense shear forces. In the present study, we examined the effect of hyperglycemia on mechanotranduction in bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAEC). …

Blood-perfused tissue models are joining the emerging field of tumor engineering because they provide new avenues for modulation of the tumor microenvironment and preclinical evaluation of the therapeutic potential of new treatments. The characterization of fluid flow parameters in such in-vitro perfused tissue models is a critical step towards better understanding and manipulating the tumor microenvironment. However, traditional optical flow measurement methods are inapplicable because of the opacity of blood and the thickness of the tissue sample. In order to overcome the limitations of optical method we demonstrate the feasibility of using phase-contrast x-ray imaging to perform microscale particle image …
Regression Modeling Of Baseflow And Baseflow Index For Michigan Usa, Yinqin Zhang, Laurent Ahiablame, Bernard Engel, Junmin Liu
Regression Modeling Of Baseflow And Baseflow Index For Michigan Usa, Yinqin Zhang, Laurent Ahiablame, Bernard Engel, Junmin Liu
School of Agricultural & Biological Engineering Faculty Publications
Baseflow plays an important role in maintaining streamflow. Seventeen gauged watersheds and their characteristics were used to develop regression models for annual baseflow and baseflow index (BFI) estimation in Michigan. Baseflow was estimated from daily streamflow records using the two-parameter recursive digital filter method for baseflow separation of the Web-based Hydrograph Analysis Tool (WHAT) program. Three equations (two for annual baseflow and one for BFI estimation) were developed and validated. Results indicated that observed average annual baseflow ranged from 162 to 345 mm, and BFI varied from 0.45 to 0.80 during 1967–2011. The average BFI value during the study period …

Real-Time In Vivo Cherenkoscopy Imaging During External Beam Radiation Therapy, Rongxiao Zhang, David J. Gladstone, Lesley A. Jarvis, Rendall R. Strawbridge, P Jack Hoopes, Oscar D. Friedman, Adam K. Glaser, Brian W. Pogue
Dartmouth Scholarship
Cherenkov radiation is induced when charged particles travel through dielectric media (such as biological tissue) faster than the speed of light through that medium. Detection of this radiation or excited luminescence during megavoltage external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) can allow emergence of a new approach to superficial dose estimation, functional imaging, and quality assurance for radiation therapy dosimetry. In this letter, the first in vivo Cherenkov images of a real-time Cherenkoscopy during EBRT are presented. The imaging system consisted of a time-gated intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) coupled with a commercial lens. The ICCD was synchronized to the linear accelerator to …
“The Flow Of Blood In Nature” Franz Marc’S Animal Theory, Morgan Rinehart
“The Flow Of Blood In Nature” Franz Marc’S Animal Theory, Morgan Rinehart
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues for a coherent theory of the animal in the written and visual works of the German Expressionist painter, Franz Marc. By contextualizing Marc’s animal theory within the history of animal studies, this thesis will analyze how Marc’s animal theory corresponds with several central concepts within this field. One of these concepts—a theory of animal death—is central to the artist’s greater theory of the animal and to the analysis this thesis provides. In examining Marc’s theory of animal death, the following work will propose that the artist’s theory of animal spirituality is his greatest legacy within the field …

Short Duration Waveforms Recorded Extracellularly From Freely Moving Rats Are Representative Of Axonal Activity, Ashlee A. Robbins, Steven E. Fox, Gregory L. Holmes, Rod C. Scott, Jeremy M. Barry
Dartmouth Scholarship
While extracellular somatic action potentials from freely moving rats have been well characterized, axonal activity has not. We report direct extracellular tetrode recordings of putative axons whose principal feature is a short duration waveform (SDW) with an average peak-trough length less than 179 μs. While SDW recordings using tetrodes have previously been treated as questionable or classified as cells, we hypothesize that they are representative of axonal activity. These waveforms have significantly shorter duration than somatic action potentials, are triphasic and are therefore similar to classic descriptions of microelectrode recordings in white matter and of in vitro action potential propagation …

Time Spent With Children And Working Parents’ Willingness To Medicate Adhd-Like Behaviors, Bora Pajo, David Cohen
Time Spent With Children And Working Parents’ Willingness To Medicate Adhd-Like Behaviors, Bora Pajo, David Cohen
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
How much time parents spend with their children is likely to influence their judgments of children’s behaviors and the behaviors themselves. In the diagnosis of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), parents are key informants and decide whether their children should receive medication. This exploratory study investigates the relationship between working parents’ willingness to medicate ADHD-like behaviors and the time they can spend with their children during a regular workday. The participants (409 parents of 5- to 17- year-old children reporting having no child with emotional or behavioral problems and 87 reporting having such a child) were drawn from a population-based …

Investigation Of The Structure And Dynamics Of Regioisomeric Eu³⁺ And Gd³⁺ Chelates Of Nb-Dotma: Implications For Mri Contrast Agent Design, Benjamin Charles Webber
Investigation Of The Structure And Dynamics Of Regioisomeric Eu³⁺ And Gd³⁺ Chelates Of Nb-Dotma: Implications For Mri Contrast Agent Design, Benjamin Charles Webber
Dissertations and Theses
The detection of disease and abnormal pathology by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been aided significantly by the use of gadolinium (Gd3+)-based contrast agents (CAs) over the past three decades. MRI and MRI CAs play a critical role in diagnosing tumors and diseases of the central nervous system. The agents used clinically have been shown to safely increase MRI contrast despite the toxicity of Gd3+, owing to the high kinetic and thermodynamic stability of these chelates. However, current CAs enhance contrast at a small fraction of what is theoretically possible. This leads to the necessity of …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: Limited data exist on the contribution of dietary sources of arsenic to an individual's total exposure, particularly in populations with exposure via drinking water. Here, the association between diet and toenail arsenic concentrations (a long-term biomarker of exposure) was evaluated for individuals with measured household tap water arsenic. Foods known to be high in arsenic, including rice and seafood, were of particular interest.
Methods: Associations between toenail arsenic and consumption of 120 individual diet items were quantified using general linear models that also accounted for household tap water arsenic and potentially confounding factors (e.g., age, caloric intake, sex, smoking) …
