Do Social Science Students Value Empirical Research? Answers From A Canadian And Dutch Investigation, William Mcconnell, Hendrien L. Kaal, John P. Marton
Do Social Science Students Value Empirical Research? Answers From A Canadian And Dutch Investigation, William Mcconnell, Hendrien L. Kaal, John P. Marton
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Although students in the social sciences perceive quantitative methods courses negatively, this need not mean that they devalue empirical research, or lack capacity to become informed consumers of research. To explore this possibility, we administered two measures to Canadian students (n = 194) enrolled in first-year social science courses, and to Dutch criminology students (n =156) enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program. While students in each country expressed low interest in engaging in research, they expressed significantly higher appreciation of the value of research. Further, we found a small-medium positive correlation between education and appreciation of research in the …
Emphasizing Learning In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Bill Cerbin
Emphasizing Learning In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Bill Cerbin
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The learning question in the scholarship of teaching and learning focuses on whether the work advances student learning. Although the scope of inquiry may vary, the learning question is, first and foremost, about outcomes—what or how much did students learn. It is typified by these kinds of research questions: Did the new teaching method I used produce better learning than the traditional method I have been using; Did the new assignment I used result in better student performance than the one I typically use; Did the strategy our department adopted have a positive effect on student performance in the …
What Real-World Criminal Cases Tell Us About Genetics Evidence, Deborah W. Denno
What Real-World Criminal Cases Tell Us About Genetics Evidence, Deborah W. Denno
Faculty Scholarship
This Article, which is part of a symposium on "Law and Ethics at the Frontier of Genetic Technology," examines an unprecedented experimental study published in Science. The Science study indicated that psychopathic criminal offenders were more likely to receive lighter sentences if a judge was aware of genetic and neurobiological explanations for the offender’s psychopathy. This Article contends that the study’s conclusions derive from substantial flaws in the study’s design and methodology. The hypothetical case upon which the study is based captures just one narrow and unrepresentative component of how genetic and neurobiological information operates, and the study suffers from …

Conservation Easement Policies Across New England, Virginia A. Keesler
Conservation Easement Policies Across New England, Virginia A. Keesler
Honors Theses
This thesis examines conservation easement policies across the New England states. Conservation easements are legal agreements through which landowners donate or sell some or all of their properties' development rights to conservation entities, typically government entities or land trusts. I specifically ask: How do conservation easement policies compare across the New England states? How can conservation easement policies be reformed to enhance the use of easements as a conservation tool? Although easements allow conservation entities to conserve more land for less money, the ecological and social implications of the increased use of easements have been debated.

Role Of Foliar Feeding Of Micronutrients In Yield Maximization Of Cotton In Punjab, Muhammad Yaseen, Wazir Ahmed, Muhammad Shahbaz
Role Of Foliar Feeding Of Micronutrients In Yield Maximization Of Cotton In Punjab, Muhammad Yaseen, Wazir Ahmed, Muhammad Shahbaz
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Deficiency of micronutrients, particularly of zinc, boron, and iron, in calcareous soils is of great concern. Results indicate a reduction in yield of seed-cotton due to an imbalance of nutrients, particularly micronutrients, on calcareous soils in the last decade. About 90% of Pakistani soils are deficient in micronutrients, particularly zinc, boron, and iron. This paper highlights efforts to overcome these deficiencies in cotton through foliar feeding of micronutrients. The results of this study indicated a marked improvement in seed-cotton yield with foliar application of a spray containing Zn, B, Mn, Cu, and Fe on cotton crops grown on calcareous soils …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata (Say) (Hemiptera: Tingidae), is one of the most destructive pests of plane trees (Platanus spp.) worldwide. This pest is a major nuisance in Europe since plane trees are very popular in parks. Thirteen entomopathogenic fungal strains including 4 isolates of Beauveria bassiana, 2 isolates of Beauveria pseudobassiana, 6 isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae, and 1 isolate of Isaria fumosorosea were screened against adults and nymphs of C. ciliata under controlled laboratory conditions in order to test their efficacy and search for an effective and safe biocontrol agent strategy. Each isolate was applied with a conidial …
Effect Of Laboratory-Accelerated Aging Treatment On The Ultimate Strength Of A 4-Sided Mdf Kitchen Cabinet, Ali Fathollahzadeh, Ali Akbar Enayati, Yusuf Zi̇ya Erdi̇l
Effect Of Laboratory-Accelerated Aging Treatment On The Ultimate Strength Of A 4-Sided Mdf Kitchen Cabinet, Ali Fathollahzadeh, Ali Akbar Enayati, Yusuf Zi̇ya Erdi̇l
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
In this study, 4-sided rectangular full-size cabinets from 2 types of medium-density fiberboard (MDF; melamine-coated MDF with edge band and uncoated MDF without edge band) were manufactured and tested. Screws with nominal size of 4 × 40 mm were used for joint fabrication. Cabinets were kept in a conditioned climate chamber for accelerated aging treatment and their maximum load-bearing capacity was measured. Results revealed that approximately one-third of the load-carrying capacity of both types of cabinets (when compared to control samples) was lost after aging cycles. The ultimate strength of cabinets (in both control samples and after aging cycles) constructed …

Performance Of Dacryodes Edulis Mycorrhized Layers Under Different Cropping Conditions In Makenene, Cameroon, Martin Mbeuyo, Nehemie Donfagsiteli Tchinda, Emmanuel Youmbi, Hubert Jean Claude Mbita Messi, Akoa Amougou
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Dacryodes edulis, with its potential dietary and medicinal uses, is an aging member of the agroforestry system and is classified among the priority species for domestication in Central Africa. Reliable techniques for producing quality planting materials other than seeds are urgently needed. The aims of this study were to produce D. edulis layers and integrate them into the cropping system. To promote rooting and the survival rates of layers, 4 treatments were used. The layers produced were inoculated with mycorrhiza and introduced into cropping systems for the evaluation of morphobiochemical parameters. The results show that 67.91% of D. edulis trees …
An Axr1 Suppressor Mutation In Arabidopsis That Partially Restores Auxin Signaling Also Reverses Defects In Jasmonate Response, İskender Ti̇ryaki̇, Paul E. Staswick
An Axr1 Suppressor Mutation In Arabidopsis That Partially Restores Auxin Signaling Also Reverses Defects In Jasmonate Response, İskender Ti̇ryaki̇, Paul E. Staswick
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The Arabidopsis mutant axr1 is defective in both auxin and jasmonic acid responses. A screen for axr1-24 suppressors yielded sar1-5, an allele of previously described mutants that partially correct the auxin response defects in axr1. The new allele partially suppresses defects in jasmonate response in axr1. The JA concentration required for 50% inhibition of seedling root growth was 5-10 µM for axr1-24 sar1-5. This was at least 10-fold less than that required for axr-24, but 5- to 10-fold higher than for WT. In the axr1-24 background sar1-5 also partially restored resistance to the soil fungus Pythium irregulare, a trait known …
Sustainable Approach To Produce Bioethanol From Karanja (Pongamia Pinnata) Oilseed Residue, Pooja Doshi, Gopal Srivastava
Sustainable Approach To Produce Bioethanol From Karanja (Pongamia Pinnata) Oilseed Residue, Pooja Doshi, Gopal Srivastava
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Agricultural biomass is the world's largest, most sustainable, and most promising renewable energy source. This study investigated the potential of Karanja (Pongamia pinnata) oilseed residual waste (defatted kernel, hull, and their mixture) as a source of ethanol. The pretreatment of the finely ground samples was carried out using dilute sulfuric acid (0.5%) hydrolysis at a higher temperature of 121 °C and 15 psi pressure for 90 min. The pretreatment usually removes the lignin and facilitates the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses. They were further hydrolyzed using 5% H_2SO_4 at 50 °C for 70 h. The analyses of hydrolyzed products have …

Effectiveness Of Flipping The Classroom In A Honors Level, Mechanics-Based Physics Class, Stephen J. Zownorega
Effectiveness Of Flipping The Classroom In A Honors Level, Mechanics-Based Physics Class, Stephen J. Zownorega
Masters Theses
Concentration in Physical Science
The idea behind "flipping the classroom" is that standard lecture can be sent home with students to view and take notes. Class time that had traditionally been used for presenting lecture information can then be used by the teacher for different teaching methods in class. These teaching methods support what was seen in a video (i.e., screencast) and allows students an opportunity to develop a better understanding of the concepts viewed the night before. During class time the teacher can work individually with students, thus increasing personal contact time between teacher and student. Videos also allow …
Speaking Silence Fluently: Encouraging Student Understanding Of Counterhegemonic Strategies In African American Literature, Kathleen S. Decker
Speaking Silence Fluently: Encouraging Student Understanding Of Counterhegemonic Strategies In African American Literature, Kathleen S. Decker
Masters Theses
This thesis suggests that while mainstream multicultural education claims to promote both diversity and equality, it fails to adequately address, let alone improve, the living conditions of minority students. It further suggests that when teachers help students read through the lenses of critical multiculturalism and critical whiteness studies, students can better see that both canonical and non-canonical African American authors deliberately employ nuanced strategies to resist white supremacy. Specifically through the use of purposeful and discreet silences, these authors serve to promote new and actively counterhegemonic ways of thinking in the classroom.
Each chapter pairs two texts--one canonical and one …
Queering The Sublime: Virginia Woolf, Sexology, And Sexuality, Emily Whitmore
Queering The Sublime: Virginia Woolf, Sexology, And Sexuality, Emily Whitmore
Masters Theses
Using Virginia Woolf's novels, The Voyage Out, Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and Orlando, I begin to explore moments where the characters experience the sublime as defined by Edmund Burke. Woolf uses the traditional sublime, but complicates the concept beyond its initial intention. The moments that mimic the sublime, but include the body, the natural world, and artistic creativity grows into what I will call the "queer sublime," which is new for both Woolf scholarship and for the sublime. Woolf's experimentation with the term and part of the "queer sublime" also helps to create a different …
Resolving The Nutritional Requirements Of The Bile Acid-Dehydroxylating Gut Bacterium Clostridium Scindens, Oindrila Paul
Resolving The Nutritional Requirements Of The Bile Acid-Dehydroxylating Gut Bacterium Clostridium Scindens, Oindrila Paul
Masters Theses
Compared to the other parts of the human body, the gastrointestinal tract harbors a complex microbiota. The impact of the indigenous microbiota on host physiology is most pronounced in the colon, where the primary bile acids chenodeoxycholic acid and cholic acid are converted, via 7α-dehydroxylation, to the toxic secondary bile acids lithocholic acid and deoxycholic acid, respectively, by Clostridium scindens, an obligate anaerobe. Interestingly, other than bile acid dehydroxylation, little is known about the basic physiology of C. scindens. Understanding the metabolism of C. scindens will hopefully provide much-needed information as to how this gut bacterium impacts human health and …
Conceptualizing Identity As Performance In Young Adult Dystopian Literature, Kelly F. Franklin
Conceptualizing Identity As Performance In Young Adult Dystopian Literature, Kelly F. Franklin
Masters Theses
Young Adult Literature has historically been read as a genre that encourages singular identity formation. Scholars have argued that this literature inspires young adult readers to find their true identity by showcasing characters in the process of identity construction. However, when read through the lens of performance theory - a vast field that encompasses many disciplines such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, literature and theatre - it becomes evident that YAL actually encourages the formation of multiple roles and identities. This genre features characters trying on new roles, casting assigned roles aside, and assuming new identities to best suit their settings. …
Personality And Substance Abuse, Juliana Gonzalez
Personality And Substance Abuse, Juliana Gonzalez
Masters Theses
The Big Five have shown to be distinct personality traits that do not overlap and have universal applicability, so this study examined whether there are specific personality trait differences in users of Marijuana, Pain Medication, Sedative/Hypnotics, and Stimulants.
Study was placed in the 50 most visited Craigslist pages in the United States. Anonymous web users (N = 547) were recruited through Craigslist. High Neuroticism was associated with Marijuana and Stimulant use. Low Conscientiousness was associated with Marijuana and Stimulant use. High Extraversion was associated with Pain Medication use only. Implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research were discussed.
Pubs, Temperance, And The Construction Of Irishness In James Joyce's Ulysses, Leslie Sweet Myrick
Pubs, Temperance, And The Construction Of Irishness In James Joyce's Ulysses, Leslie Sweet Myrick
Masters Theses
Ulysses can be read as a bar crawl; three episodes and part of a fourth are set in public houses, while various characters walk to and from drinking activities and establishments throughout the day. However, Ulysses' main character, Leopold Bloom, is an extremely moderate drinker and not considered "a regular" patron at any public house. His practicing of temperance is one example of how Bloom does not embody the typical Irish masculinity. However, the drinking culture in Ulysses has not been fully explored in context of the temperance movement which was an ongoing cause in 1904 Dublin despite Guinness's Brewery …
Coping Strategies Related To Obsessive-Compulsive, Social Anxiety, And Depressive Symptoms, Andrew M. Obritsch
Coping Strategies Related To Obsessive-Compulsive, Social Anxiety, And Depressive Symptoms, Andrew M. Obritsch
Masters Theses
The relationship between coping strategies and psychological symptoms has been studied for decades. The purpose of the current study was to examine how coping strategies relate to obsessive-compulsive, social anxiety, and depressive symptoms as well as how these three symptom domains influence chosen coping strategies. Participants were administered the COPE, Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS), Social Phobia Scale (SPS), Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS), and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, Revised (CESD-R). Given the symptom comorbidity between these three symptom domains, regression analyses were conducted to control for comorbidity among both symptom domains and coping factors. This study found that …
Perceptions And Expectations Of Residence Halls, Christopher M. Hardin
Perceptions And Expectations Of Residence Halls, Christopher M. Hardin
Masters Theses
The study examined perceptions of the residence halls, how those changed over the course of the first semester living in a residence hall, and how the residence halls were meeting the needs of the students. The experimenter utilized the past literature of Arthur Chickering and Linda Reisser (1993) regarding vectors of student development and the work on human needs written by Abraham Maslow (1943). Nine undergraduate students were randomly chosen during orientation days and interviewed about their perceptions of campus. Two follow-up interviews occurred to examine how perceptions changed over the course of a semester. Participants initially expressed concern with …
