Ecological Effects And Genetic Diversity Of The Invading Rhizocephalan Parasite Loxothylacus Panopaei In The Flatback Mud Crab Eurypanopeus Depressus, Kathryn A. O'Shaughnessy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The rhizocephalan barnacle Loxothylacus panopaei (Gissler, 1884) is a parasite of xanthid crabs. Infection results in parasitic castration and anecdysis of the host. Loxothylacus panopaei is invasive to the US Atlantic coast. The parasite's range was expanded by introduction of infected crabs to Chesapeake Bay in the mid-1960s, and now extends from Long Island Sound, New York to Cape Canaveral, Florida. Monthly flatback mud crab (Eurypanopeus depressus Smith, 1869) collections over 13 months (January 2012-January 2013) at three South Carolina locations found an overall parasite prevalence of 24.2% (391 of 1,615), and provided the first reports of L. panopaei at …
Genetically Modified Myoglobin As A Mimic For Heme Enzymes, Subhash Chand
Genetically Modified Myoglobin As A Mimic For Heme Enzymes, Subhash Chand
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
This study addresses the mechanistic relationships between formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their catalytic oxidation functions in oxygenation and peroxygenation reactions in heme enzymes. Even though both cytochrome P450s (CYP P450s) and peroxidases have different catalytic activities, the involvement of common ROS (Compound 0 and Compound I) have been proposed. Therefore, to understand the generation and activation of peroxide to form ROS, genetically-engineered myoglobin (Mb) mutants were created by incorporating redox-sensitive 3-amino-L-tyrosine (NH2Tyr) or L-3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) into its active site. Distal His 64 replaced with redox amino acids mutant Mb showed excellent turnover rates for thioanisole and …

Identification And Characterisation Of Campylobacter Ureolyticus: A New And Emerging Gastrointestinal Pathogen, Susan Bullman
Identification And Characterisation Of Campylobacter Ureolyticus: A New And Emerging Gastrointestinal Pathogen, Susan Bullman
Theses
Campylobacter jejuni is universally recognized as the leading bacterial cause of human gastroenteritis. However, within recent years a growing number of non- jejuni/coli Campylobacter species have been acknowledged as emerging human and animal pathogens. Advances in molecular diagnostics and development of pioneering culture methodologies have led to the detection of a range of under-appreciated and nutritionally fastidious Campylobacter species, including C. ureolyticus. Herein, we provide the first report of C ureolyticus in the faeces of patients presenting with gastroenteritis and suggest a role for this organism as an emerging enteric pathogen.
Employing a two-tiered molecular study, we report C. ureolyticus …
Development Of A Recombinant Lactobacillus Salivarius For Prophylactic Applications Against Mycobacterium Avium Subspecies Paratuberculosis And Johne’S Disease, Christopher Johnston
Development Of A Recombinant Lactobacillus Salivarius For Prophylactic Applications Against Mycobacterium Avium Subspecies Paratuberculosis And Johne’S Disease, Christopher Johnston
Theses
Current whole-cell vaccines against Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis, the etiological agent of Johne’s disease, are unable to provide complete protection against infection. Moreover, such whole-cell formulations interfere with diagnostic tests for bovine tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis). The development of subunit vaccines, those which are preferentially based on one, or a select few, immunodominant protective antigens is considered as the realistic next step in overcoming these issues. The (MAP) K-10 genome is a single circular chromosome of 4,829,781 base pairs and encodes 4,350 predicted ORFs. In order to identify MAP specific proteins for subsequent incorporation within a mucosal based vaccine development, a …

Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticle Uptake Across The Isolated Perfused Intestine Of Rainbow Trout: Physiological Mechanisms And A Comparison With Caco-2 Cells, Aliaa Rasheed Al-Jubory
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The wide use of nanoscale materials in food and health care products raises the concern of their possible uptake across the gastrointestinal tract, but very limited data are available on their uptake kinetics, and the potential hazards for humans. In this study, the uptake mechanism of titanium dioxide (TiO2) across the isolated perfused fish intestine and human intestinal Caco-2 cells were evaluated. The in vitro preparation of the whole gut sac and the isolated perfused intestine of rainbow trout were performed using both bulk and nano TiO2 in a concentration of 1 mg l-1 for up to 4 h. The …
The Impact Of Ocean Acidification, Increased Seawater Temperature And A Bacterial Challenge On The Immune Response And Physiology Of The Blue Mussel, Mytilus Edulis., Rob Ellis
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Anthropogenic activities are fundamentally altering the chemistry of the world’s oceans. Many of these modifications could have a significant impact on the health of marine organisms. Yet, despite being proposed as one of the most significant threats that marine ecosystems face, to date very little is known about the impact of anthropogenic climate change, and ocean acidification in particular, on host defence. The aims of this thesis are to investigate the impact of environmental stressors on the invertebrate immune response, providing empirical data on how anthropogenically induced stressors will impact the invertebrate immune system and how this will impact organism …

The Effects Of Elevated Temperature And Pco2 On The Developmental Eco-Physiology Of The European Lobster, Homarus Gammarus (L.), Daniel Peter Small
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The successful completion of the early developmental stages in organisms with complex life cycles is crucial to the persistence of a species both at the local and global scale. Thus changes in the abiotic environment experienced during larval and early benthic development can have profound effects on the development and ultimately dynamics of populations of marine invertebrates. The effects of elevated temperature and pCO2 in line with future predictions of anthropogenic climate change, ocean warming and ocean acidification (OA), on the survivorship and growth during early development of marine invertebrates is beginning to be understood, yet the underlying physiological ontogeny …
Elasmobranch Longline Capture: Ecological Application, Physiological Impacts And Alternative Techniques, Edward James Brooks
Elasmobranch Longline Capture: Ecological Application, Physiological Impacts And Alternative Techniques, Edward James Brooks
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Longline fishing is the most common elasmobranch capture method in the world, both for commercial fishing, and to a lesser extent for scientific surveys. The capture of an animal on a longline initiates a series of physiological responses designed to promote survivorship in the short term, but if unchecked, can cause reduced individual fitness and/or mortality in the long term. Given widespread declines in shark populations, an improved understanding of the physiological costs of longline capture is needed. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the physiological response of sharks to capture and restraint, to assess novel, non-invasive alternatives …
The Ecology, Distribution And Spawning Behaviour Of The Commercially Important Common Cuttlefish (Sepia Officinalis) In The Inshore Waters Of The English Channel, Isobel Bloor
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Over the last 50 years there has been a rapid increase in global landings of cephalopods (octopus, squid and cuttlefish). In European waters, cuttlefish are among the most important commercial cephalopod resources and within the North-East Atlantic, the English Channel supports the largest cuttlefish fishery, with the common cuttlefish, Sepia o cinalis (Linnaeus, 1758), dominating landings. S. o cinalis has a short (2 year) life cycle in the English Channel that is punctuated by seasonal migrations inshore and o shore. Using a combination of di erent métiers including beam trawling, otter trawling and coastal trapping, this shared fisheries resource is …

Investigation Into The Measure, Correlate And Predict Methodologies Used In Wind Farm Design Software, Brendan O'Sullivan
Investigation Into The Measure, Correlate And Predict Methodologies Used In Wind Farm Design Software, Brendan O'Sullivan
Theses
This paper is focused on the Measure Correlate and Predict (MCP) methodologies used to estimate long term wind resource at a prospective site. The first common step in all MCP methodologies is a successful wind measurement campaign at the prospective site. This campaign involves the erection of a wind measurement mast (ideally to the hub height of the proposed turbine) and careful selection of booms, mountings and anemometers. The wind measurement campaign is a vital part of the process as the correlation and prediction analysis is only as accurate as the measured wind data. Correlation is a measure of the …
Historical Remedies Versus Current Pathogens : Laboratory Investigation Of The Efficacy Of Traditional Herbal Remedies Against Present-Day Common Causes Of Bacterial Pneumonia, Eibhlin Mccarthy
Theses
Despite the medical advances of recent years, pneumonia is still a common disease in Ireland, accounting for approximately 7% of deaths in this country'. While national databases such as those run by CIDR and SARI ensure that incidences of systemic and notifiable infections such as tuberculosis are recorded, there are currently no available statistics on commonplace respiratory isolates within Ireland. This study analysed the available data on bacterial pathogens isolated from respiratory samples at a 355 bed Irish hospital over a one year period. Seasonal variations and resistance patterns were noted. The most frequently isolated pathogens were Staphylococcus aureus (27%), …

Sleep Duration And Breast Cancer Phenotype, Ali Khawaja, Santosh Rao, Li Li, Cheryl L. Thompson
Sleep Duration And Breast Cancer Phenotype, Ali Khawaja, Santosh Rao, Li Li, Cheryl L. Thompson
Medical College Documents
Emerging evidence suggests that short sleep is associated with an increased risk of cancer; however, little has been done to study the role of sleep on tumor characteristics. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between sleep duration and tumor phenotype in 972 breast cancer patients. Sleep duration was inversely associated with tumor grade (univariate P = 0.032), particularly in postmenopausal women (univariate P = 0.018). This association did not reach statistical significance after adjustments for age, race, body mass index, hormone replacement therapy use, alcohol consumption, smoking, and physical activity in the entire study sample (P = 0.052), but …
Risk Factors For Release In Nurses With Substance Use Disorder, Kathleen J. Tinklenberg
Risk Factors For Release In Nurses With Substance Use Disorder, Kathleen J. Tinklenberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is defined as the continued use of mood-altering addicting substances despite adverse consequences (Morse & Flavin, 1992). Nurses are not immune from this progressive and fatal disease and if left untreated, a nurse with SUD poses a double jeopardy: risk to the patients and a threat to her or his own health. Many State Boards of Nursing (SBN) have implemented a non-disciplinary alternative to punitive treatment of professionals with SUD; such programs offer monitoring for nurses afflicted with SUD. While studies have found a lower relapse rate for healthcare professionals enrolled in these monitoring programs than …

Evaluating The Use Of Autonomous Recording Units To Monitor Yellow Rails, Nelson's Sparrows, And Le Conte's Sparrows, Anna Marie Sidie-Slettedahl
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Population status and habitat use of yellow rails (Coturnicops noveboracensis) (YERA), Nelson’s sparrows (Ammodramus nelsoni) (NESP), and Le Conte’s sparrows (Ammodramus leconteii) (LCSP) are poorly known, so systematic surveys of these elusive species are needed to inform conservation planning and guide management. A standardized protocol for monitoring secretive marsh birds exists (Conway 2009, 2011); however, these species call at night and may be missed during early-morning marsh bird surveys. I tested the effectiveness of autonomous recording units (ARUs) to survey these species by analyzing recorded vocalizations using bioacoustics software. I deployed 22 ARUs at 54 sites in northern Minnesota and …

International Students At Uni: An Analysis Of Experiences, Kellie Petersen
Honors Program Theses
It is important that people feel welcome in a society. It contributes to the health and comfort of individuals as well as strengthens society as a whole. This is particularly important to immigrants, who are entering a new country and therefore a new society and culture. Due to their immigrant status, they may feel disconnected from this new society and culture. Such a feeling could be intensified if some individuals within the society and culture display xenophobia. This generally refers to intense and irrational dislike or even a fear of people from other countries, but for the purposes of this …
