We examined chemically-mediated antipredator behaviour in larval Simulium vittatum Zetterstedt 1838 by exposing individuals to one of five stimuli during daytime (1500 hr) and night-time (2300 hr) trials: distilled water, injured earthworm (Lumbricus sp.), injured conspecific (S. vittatum), predator (Corydalus sp.), and a combination of injured conspecific and predator. Larval responses were not homogenous with respect to treatment during daytime and night-time trials and the adjusted residuals show that a higher frequency of larvae curled in response to damaged conspecifics and the combination cue, and drifted when exposed to the combination cue. Additionally, the curling response …

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether organizational culture varies as a function of institutional type in higher education, and to identify whether there exists congruence between organizational culture type and leader behavior. Utilizing the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) developed by Cameron and Quinn (2011), data were collected from a sample of academic deans (n = 84) representing the colleges and universities across five states of the Upper Midwest. The results indicated a general trend toward clan cultures and congruent leader behavior for all institutional types (i.e., associate's colleges, baccalaureate colleges, master's colleges and universities, and …
Effects Of Ciona Intestinalis Distal-Less-B Nonexpression And Overexpression On Phenotype And Downstream Targets, Matthew David Blanchette
Effects Of Ciona Intestinalis Distal-Less-B Nonexpression And Overexpression On Phenotype And Downstream Targets, Matthew David Blanchette
Open Access Dissertations
Ciona intestinalis can serve as a useful model for developmental studies in the chordate lineage due to its basal position in the chordate phylogeny. It shows a simplified chordate body plan during its development, during which important genetic pathways are conserved with vertebrates, and its developmental gene regulation can be manipulated through the insertion of transgenic DNA by electroporation. The Distalless (Dll) genes are a family of homeobox genes in chordates that are homologous to the single Dll gene of other metazoan animal groups and code for developmental factors that play a role in determining multiple developmental cell fates. These …

Open Access Dissertations
According to limb loss statistics, there are over one million leg amputees in the US whose lives are severely impacted by their conditions. In order to improve the quality of life of patients with leg amputations, neural activities have been studied by many researchers for intuitive prosthesis control. The neural signals collected from muscles are electromyographic (EMG) signals, which represent neuromuscular activities and are effective bioelectrical signals for expressing movement intent. EMG pattern recognition (PR) is a widely used method for characterizing EMG signals and classifying movement intent. The key to the success of neural-controlled artificial limbs is the neural-machine …

Assessment Of Mammal Biodiversity In Coffee-Dominated Landscapes Of India And Costa Rica, Stephanie Amanda Caudill
Open Access Dissertations
The fate of many tropical wildlife species depends on the way in which human-dominated landscapes are managed. Conservation strategies that incorporate agricultural landscapes are imperative for the survival of native fauna. Coffee is a major cash crop worldwide and is grown in tropical regions of the world that are often designated as biodiversity hotspots. Shade coffee, an agroforestry system in which coffee is grown under the shade of intentionally managed and/or native tree cover, has shown promise to provide habitat and support the diversity of bird, bat, and insect communities, but few studies have focused on non-volant mammals living in …

This thesis presents the design of ultra-low power Phase-Locked Loops (PLLs) intended for applications in the extended audio range. The PLL is well suited for battery operated systems, where small size and low power operation are crucially important. The two implementations presented are based on current controlled relaxation oscillator and a ring oscillator intended for the same frequency range. The frequency is controlled by a current that can vary from 2 to 74 nA. Using a reference frequency of ¼ of the typical watch crystal frequency, the user can select any integer multiple of 8.192 kHz up to the maximum …
Sustaining Environmental Flows In Southern New England Rivers: Effects Of Watreshed Factors And Land Use, Alisa Morrison
Sustaining Environmental Flows In Southern New England Rivers: Effects Of Watreshed Factors And Land Use, Alisa Morrison
Open Access Dissertations
Rivers and river systems serve as conduits for nutrients and organisms, function as corridors for fish and wildlife passage, and provide resources for humans. Streamflow has been called the master variable in a river because it affects habitat diversity and availability through its impact on physical factors that influence habitat quality. However, land use changes such as urbanization and irrigation, can have major effects on stream hydrology. Modifications of the land surface due to urbanization alters natural stream hydrographs by increasing flood peaks, decreasing time to peak flows, and causing higher runoff velocities. Irrigation may produce the opposite effects.

Epidemiological studies offer strong evidence that diets rich in fruits and vegetables provide a defense against cardiovascular disease, cancer and other physiological disorders. One theory suggests that these hazards are due in part to an imbalance of the body's oxidative load, caused by an increase in biologically-relevant free radicals, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS). Flavonoids, a family of plant metabolites, are associated with an antioxidant capacity which could reduce oxidative stress and aging. Quercetin, a flavonol with one of the highest rated antioxidant characteristic, was used as a model system to evaluate the reactivity of flavonoids in the presence …

Termite hindguts are populated by a dense and diverse community of microbial symbionts working in concert to transform lignocellulosic plant material and derived residues into acetate, to recycle and fix nitrogen, and to remove oxygen. Although much has been learned about the breadth of microbial diversity in the hindgut, the ecophysiological roles of its members is less understood. In this study, we present new information about the ecophysiology of microorganism Diplosphaera colotermitum strain TAV2, an autochthonous member of the Reticulitermes flavipes gut community. An integrated high-throughput approach was used to determine the transcriptomic and proteomic profiles of cells grown under …

Section of Pulmonary & Critical Care
Background
Appropriate immune activation of T cells and macrophages is central for the control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections. IFN-γ stimulated responses are lowered in tuberculosis (TB), while expression of Suppressor of Cytokine Signaling (SOCS) molecules – 1 and 3 and CD4+CD25+FoxP3+T regulatory cells is increased. Here we investigated the association of these molecules in regard to clinical severity of TB.
Methods
Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from patients with pulmonary TB (PTB, n = 33), extra-pulmonary TB (ETB, n = 33) and healthy endemic controls (EC, n = 15). Cases were classified …

Biology Dissertations - Archive
For over 40 years, acid deposition has been recognized as a serious international environmental problem, but efforts to restore acidified streams and biota have had limited success. The need to better understand the effects of different sources of acidity on streams has become more pressing with the recent increases in surface water organic acids, or `brownification', associated with climate change and decreased acid deposition. This dissertation is a large scale multi-seasonal investigation of stream diatom communities in the Adirondack region of New York, one of the most acid-impacted regions in the United States. My first objective is to explore the …

Stomata, micro-pores on the leaf surface, are formed by a pair of guard cells. In addition to controlling water loss and gas exchange between the plant and the environment, these cells act as immunity gates to prevent pathogen invasion of the plant apoplast. Some Plant pathogens produce virulence factors that enable them to reopen the stomatal immunity gates to favor bacterial entry. Pseudomonas syringae pv. Tomato strain DC3000 (Pst DC3000) produces a phytotoxin called coronatine that assists pathogen entry via re-opening the closed stomata. Earlier studies report that Pst DC3000 regulates a family of genes called JASMONATE ZIM-DOMAIN (JAZ) genes …

Role Of The Extracytoplasmic Function Sigma Factor Carq In Oxidative Response Of Bradyrhizobium Japonicum, Anchana Thaweethawakorn
Biology Theses - Archive
Bradyrhizobium japonicum is a nitrogen-fixing bacterium that can establish a symbiotic relationship with the soybean plant. To be a successful symbiont, B. japonicum must have an effective mechanism to deal with plant defense responses such as oxidative burst. Our previous transcriptomic study showed that carQ (bll1028) encoding extracytoplasmic function (ECF) sigma factor was highly expressed (108-fold induction) in response to Hâ‚‚Oâ‚‚-mediated oxidative stress. In this study, a carQ knock-out mutant was constructed to identify the role of carQ in the oxidative response of B. japonicum. The mutant exhibited a significant decrease in survival at 10 mM Hâ‚‚Oâ‚‚ for 10 min …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Ribosomes, after one round of translation, must be recycled so that the next round of translation can occur. Complete disassembly of post-termination ribosomal complex (PoTC) in yeast for the recycling consists of three reactions: release of tRNA, release of mRNA and splitting of ribosomes, catalyzed by eukaryotic elongation factor 3 (eEF3) and ATP. Here, we show that translocation inhibitors cycloheximide and lactimidomycin inhibited all three reactions. Cycloheximide is a non-competitive inhibitor of both eEF3 and ATP. The inhibition was observed regardless of the way PoTC was prepared with either release factors or puromycin. Paromomycin not only inhibited all three reactions …

Computer-Based Versus Paper-Pencil Modes Of Administration United States Government End Of Course Exams: Student Cumulative Grade Point Averages As Predictors Of Success, Barbara A. Ryan
Dissertations
Beginning with the No Child Left Behind federal legislation, states were required to use data to monitor and improve student achievement. For high schools, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education chose End of Course Exams (EOC) to demonstrate levels of student achievement. The policy changed from school choice of paper-pencil or computer-based testing to mandated computer-based testing. This study examined whether this decision best demonstrates the level of student mastery. Using high school EOC test scores for United States Government exams as the independent variable and high school cumulative grade point average (CGPA) as the dependent variable, the …

Land Use And Climate Change: Lawyers Negotiating Above Regulation, John R. Nolon
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Sea level rise requires a new paradigm for controlling the development of coastal lands that are in harm’s way, calling for adjustments in the law, legal practice, and legal education. This article discusses the historical tendency of the law to adjust to changes in society and the recent emergence of new legal institutions and strategies for mitigating and adapting to climate change, particularly sea level rise. It illustrates how the lack of certainty about the extent and pace of sea level rise collides with the total takings doctrine of the Lucas case to frustrate the application of traditional land use …

Challenges To China's Natural Resources Conservation And Biodiversity Legislation, Jason J. Czarnezki
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Despite China's legislative attempts to conserve its natural resources and in turn protect biodiversity, Chinese law in many aspects remains ineffective in pursuit of these goals due to struggles with implementation, enforcement, and insufficient public participation, as well as legislative prioritization of economic values over ecological ones. This Article provides an overview of biodiversity and conservation legislation in China, and suggests that China can improve this legislation by increasing the public's role in conservation efforts, increasing liability and enforcement mechanisms, and improving administrative coordination.

Although there are now laws on the books in virtually every jurisdiction aimed at addressing childhood obesity in K-12 schools, these efforts are inadequate and may even be misguided in important ways. Efforts aimed at health promotion - through healthier eating and increased physical activity - remain woefully underfunded even as they proliferate at every level of government. It is one thing to enact a requirement that all schools offer a minimum number of minutes of physical education each week or that school lunches include more fruits and vegetables. But it is quite another to make the budgetary commitment to …

INTRODUCTION: In June 2012, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced his plans for a ban on the sale of sugary beverages in containers larger than 16 ounces. Shortly thereafter, the Center for Consumer Freedom took out a full-page ad in the New York Times featuring Bloomberg photo-shopped into a matronly dress with the tag line "New Yorkers need a Mayor, not a Nanny."1 On television, the CATO Institute's Michael Cannon declared, "This is the most ridiculous sort of nanny state-ism; [ilt's none of the mayor's business how much soda people are drinking." And in news- papers around the country, …

Silicon photonics has been a rapidly growing subfield of integrated optics and optoelectronic in the last decade and is currently considered a mature technology. The main thrust behind the growth is its compatibility with the mature and low-cost microelectronic integrated circuits fabrication process. In recent years, several active and passive photonic devices and circuits have been demonstrated on silicon. Optical delay lines are among important silicon photonic devices, which are essential for a variety of photonic system applications including optical beam-forming for controlling phased-array antennas, optical communication and networking systems and optical coherence tomography. In this thesis, several types of …
