Background: Demosponges are challenging for phylogenetic systematics because of their plastic and relatively simple morphologies and many deep divergences between major clades. To improve understanding of the phylogenetic relationships within Demospongiae, we sequenced and analyzed seven nuclear housekeeping genes involved in a variety of cellular functions from a diverse group of sponges.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We generated data from each of the four sponge classes (i.e., Calcarea, Demospongiae, Hexactinellida, and Homoscleromorpha), but focused on family-level relationships within demosponges. With data for 21 newly sampled families, our Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian-based approaches recovered previously phylogenetically defined taxa: Keratosap, …

Antidiscrimination Law And The Multiracial Experience: A Reply To Nancy Leong, Tina Fernandes Jan 2013

Antidiscrimination Law And The Multiracial Experience: A Reply To Nancy Leong, Tina Fernandes

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

While discrimination against multiracial people undoubtedly occurs, antidiscrimination law as it is currently understood is ill-equipped to address the problem. In this article, Dr. Fernandes argues that the modern application of two broad sources of antidiscrimination law-the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964-is out of step with their original purpose: to provide remedies for discrimination against historically oppressed groups of people. Only by recognizing multiracial individuals as one of these groups can antidiscrimination law rectify the harms visited on them.

This article first explores the history of equal protection and employment …

Evaluating Acropora Cervicornis Growth And Survivorship In A Line Nursery, Zachary Ostroff Jan 2013

Evaluating Acropora Cervicornis Growth And Survivorship In A Line Nursery, Zachary Ostroff

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Acropora cervicornis and A. palmata were once dominant, reef-building corals of Caribbean reefs. Over the last several decades, population declines of Caribbean Acropora have been dramatic, and both species are now listed as “Threatened” under the United States Endangered Species Act. Numerous restoration efforts now utilize coral gardening techniques to cultivate these species for transplantation, in which A. cervicornis is primarily cultivated both on fixed structures and in line nurseries. This study evaluates growth and survivorship of multiple A. cervicornis genotypes grown via two line nursery techniques, and compares the efficacy of each against the conventional method of fixed nursery …

Occurrence Of Antimicrobials And Antimicrobial Resistance Genes In Beef Cattle Storage Ponds And Swine Treatment Lagoons, Yuping Zhang, Chiqian Zhang, David B. Parker, Daniel D. Snow, Zhi Zhou, Xu Li

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Livestock manure treatment and storage structures are potential environmental sources of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). In this study, the occurrence of antimicrobials and ARGs was investigated in the water and the sludge compartments of beef cattle storage ponds and swine lagoons. Analysis was focused on two families of antimicrobials (sulfonamide and tetracycline) and the corresponding ARGs (sul1, sul2, tetO, tetQ and tetX). Results showed that the pseudo-partitioning coefficients of tetracyclines were higher than those of sulfonamides, suggesting different distributions of these two classes of antimicrobials between water and sludge. The ARGs tested were …

Progress Towards A Phylogeny Of World Tachinidae. Year 1, John O. Stireman Iii, James E. O'Hara, Michael C. Moulton, Pierfilippo Cerretti, Isaac S. Winkler

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

D eveloping a structural phylogenetic framework for the family Tachinidae has been an interest of mine since I first started working on tachinids as a graduate student. It was then that I developed a new phylogenetic perspective with which to view the world, and many of the questions I wanted to ask of tachinids depended on some level of phylogenetic knowledge of them. I was surprised at the time that no one had attempted a broad quantitative phylogenetic analysis of the family, and a publication from my thesis work on the Exoristinae (Stireman 2002) became the first such study that …

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The highly populated floodplains of the Bengal Delta have a long history of endemic and epidemic cholera outbreaks, both coastal and inland. Previous studies have not addressed the spatio-temporal dynamics of population vulnerability related to the influence of underlying large-scale processes. We analyzed spatial and temporal variability of cholera incidence across six surveillance sites in the Bengal Delta and their association with regional hydroclimatic and environmental drivers. More specifically, we use salinity and flood inundation modeling across the vulnerable districts of Bangladesh to test earlier proposed hypotheses on the role of these environmental variables. Our results show strong influence of …

Informed Buyers Of E-Discovery: Why General Counsel Must Become Tech Savvy, John Didday Jan 2013

Informed Buyers Of E-Discovery: Why General Counsel Must Become Tech Savvy, John Didday

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

Corporate counsel needs to understand big data, now. Civil discovery is getting bigger and more expensive by the day, but the legal field has been slow to find a solution. Too often, the huge data sets corporate litigants exchange before trial become a burden instead of an asset. Computer scientists have developed methods to aggregate and search large stores data effectively, but the legal system is intransigent; unless a leader brings technology to the law, litigation will only get slower and more expensive. I propose in-house counsel lead the way to implementing big data solutions by becoming informed buyers of …

Abstract

Background

HMLEs (HMLE-SNAIL and Kras-HMLE, Kras-HMLE-SNAIL pairs) serve as excellent model system to interrogate the effect of SNAIL targeted agents that reverse epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). We had earlier developed a SNAIL-p53 interaction inhibitor (GN-25) that was shown to suppress SNAIL function. In this report, using systems biology and pathway network analysis, we show that GN-25 could cause reversal of EMT leading to mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition (MET) in a well-recognized HMLE-SNAIL and Kras-HMLE-SNAIL models.

Results

GN-25 induced MET was found to be consistent with growth inhibition, suppression of spheroid forming capacity and induction of apoptosis. Pathway network analysis of mRNA expression …

Effects Of Family Structure On Educational Attainment And Health Insurance Coverage Of Youth In The Lower Mississippi Delta Region, Chaquenta L. Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

A large body of research, typically nationally focused, has examined the relationship between family structure, educational attainment, and healthcare access. Within this field of study, there is limited availability of regionally based studies, specifically the Lower Mississippi Delta (LMD) region. This exploratory study examines the effects of family structure on high school graduation rates and health insurance coverage within the LMD region. The objective is to determine if family structure has a direct impact on the educational attainment and health outcomes of a child within the region using concepts from nationally focused literature. Through the use of an OLS regression, …

Intrinsic Electronic And Transport Properties Of Graphyne Sheets And Nanoribbons, Wenzhi Wu, Wanlin Guo, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Graphyne, a two-dimensional carbon allotrope like graphene but containing doubly and triply bonded carbon atoms, has been proven to possess amazing electronic properties as graphene. Although the electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of graphyne and graphyne nanoribbons (NRs) have been previously studied, their electron transport behaviors have not been understood. Here we report a comprehensive study of the intrinsic electronic and transport properties of four distinct polymorphs of graphyne (α, β, γ, and 6,6,12-graphynes) and their nanoribbons (GyNRs) using density functional theory coupled with the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method. Among the four graphyne sheets, 6,6,12-graphyne displays notable directional anisotropy …

The Magnitude And Mechanism Of Charge Enhancement Of Ch∙∙O H-Bonds, U. Adhikari, Steve Scheiner Jan 2013

The Magnitude And Mechanism Of Charge Enhancement Of Ch∙∙O H-Bonds, U. Adhikari, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Quantum calculations find that neutral methylamines and thioethers form complexes, with N-methylacetamide (NMA) as proton acceptor, with binding energies of 2–5 kcal/mol. This interaction is magnified by a factor of 4–9, bringing the binding energy up to as much as 20 kcal/mol, when a CH3+ group is added to the proton donor. Complexes prefer trifurcated arrangements, wherein three separate methyl groups donate a proton to the O acceptor. Binding energies lessen when the systems are immersed in solvents of increasing polarity, but the ionic complexes retain their favored status even in water. The binding energy is reduced when the methyl …

Multivariate Analysis In Metabolomics, Bradley Worley, Robert Powers Jan 2013

Multivariate Analysis In Metabolomics, Bradley Worley, Robert Powers

Robert Powers Publications

Metabolomics aims to provide a global snapshot of all small-molecule metabolites in cells and biological fluids, free of observational biases inherent to more focused studies of metabolism. However, the staggeringly high information content of such global analyses introduces a challenge of its own; efficiently forming biologically relevant conclusions from any given metabolomics dataset indeed requires specialized forms of data analysis. One approach to finding meaning in metabolomics datasets involves multivariate analysis (MVA) methods such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares projection to latent structures (PLS), where spectral features contributing most to variation or separation are identified for …

Nmr Metabolomics Analysis Of Parkinson's Disease, Shulei Lei, Robert Powers Jan 2013

Nmr Metabolomics Analysis Of Parkinson's Disease, Shulei Lei, Robert Powers

Robert Powers Publications

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease, which is characterized by progressive death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Although mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are linked to PD pathogenesis, its etiology and pathology remain to be elucidated. Metabolomics investigates metabolite changes in biofluids, cell lysates, tissues and tumors in order to correlate these metabolomic changes to a disease state. Thus, the application of metabolomics to investigate PD provides a systematic approach to understand the pathology of PD, to identify disease biomarkers, and to complement genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics studies. This review will examine current research into …

Novel Molecules From Environmental Dna-Derived Type Ii Polyketide Biosynthetic Gene Clusters, Ryan W. King

Student Theses and Dissertations

Natural products have been a significant source of new drugs over the past 25 years. In fact, the origins of nearly 70% of antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic and antiviral small molecule drugs are in natural products (Newman and Cragg 2007). A significant proportion of natural product drugs and leads have been isolated from microbes (Newman and Cragg 2007). However, the discovery of novel natural products from microbes faces the growing hurdle of rediscovering known metabolites. Streptomyces is a microbe that has been a particularly rich source of natural products; however, it has been predicted that the last easily accessible novel Streptomyces …
