Passages Through The Ordinary: Human Pyramid, Daniel Dean
Passages Through The Ordinary: Human Pyramid, Daniel Dean
Art & Design Faculty Research
A man picks his way across a wooded hillside, a curious reluctance in his step. In a small, two-door hatchback, pale mushrooms sprout from car seats. Drawings of edibles spread across the walls of a windowless room, where wooden furniture beckons to sit, linger, and enjoy the view. A dumpster doubles as a hot tub next to an arrangement of plywood benches and white ceramic tubs, inviting the weary to bathe their feet in salubrious salts. Close by, a set of coal-black bowls nestles into itself, while dust motes dance in a glow of orange light. Ladders and levels, carefully …

Silver Nanoparticle Removal From Drinking Water: Flocculation/Sedimentation Or Filtration?, Desmond F. Lawler, Anne M. Mikelonis, Ijung Kim, Boris L.T. Lau, Sungmin Youn
All Engineering Faculty Research
Silver nanoparticles are used in a wide variety of consumer products and are therefore rapidly becoming ubiquitous in the natural environment; they can be expected to be found in the natural waters used as drinking water supplies. This research investigated whether such particles could be expected to be removed in conventional water treatment plants such as flocculation and filtration. Both flocculation and granular media filtration experiments with citrate-capped silver nanoparticles were performed at different ionic strengths and in the presence and absence of natural organic matter. The results were generally consistent with theories of particle destabilization that have been developed …

Gender Differences In The Development Of Uremic Cardiomyopathy Following Partial Nephrectomy: Role Of Progesterone, Christopher A. Drummond, George Buddny, Steven T. Haller, Jiang Liu, Yanling Yan, Zijian Xie, Deepak Malhotra, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Jiang Tian
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Gender difference has been suggested as a risk factor for developing cardiovascular and renal diseases in humans and experimental animals. As a major sex hormone, progesterone was reported to compete with cardiotonic steroid binding to Na/K-ATPase. Our previous publication demonstrated that cardiotonic steroids (e.g., marinobufagenin) play an important role in the development of experimental uremic cardiomyopathy. We also observed that the putative mineralocorticoid antagonists, spironolactone and its major metabolite canrenone, antagonize binding of cardiotonic steroids to Na/K-ATPase in a competitive manner and also ameliorate experimental uremic cardiomyopathy induced by partial nephrectomy. In the following studies, we noted that progesterone displayed …

Numerical Study Of Cold Dome Variability Induced By Typhoon Morakot (2009) Off Northeastern Taiwan, Yaling Tsai, Ching-Sheng Chern, Sen Jan, Joe Wang
Journal of Marine Research
The ocean response to the passage of Typhoon Morakot (2009) near the continental shelf of the East China Sea off northeastern Taiwan was evaluated using a numerical ocean model to clarify how the permanent upwelling feature in this region was changed during this storm event. Several studies have identified the presence of the Kuroshio subsurface water in this Cold Dome region, which results from the interactions among the monsoon, the Kuroshio and the shelf topography. This study shows how tropical cyclone Morakot's passage quickly disturbed the circulation around Taiwan and induced a short-period intrusion of the Kuroshio water onto the …

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Over 90% of children with standard risk-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (SR-ALL) will survive, but there are limited data concerning their psychological adjustment during treatment. We prospectively assessed symptoms of anxiety, depression and behavioral disturbances in children with SR-ALL during the first 12 months of therapy and identified factors associated with psychological distress. We conducted a cohort study of 159 children 2-9.99 years old with SR-ALL enrolled and treated on Children's Oncology Group study AALL0331 at 31 selected sites. The primary caregiver completed the Behavior Assessment System for Children-Second Edition, the Family Assessment Device-General Functioning, and the Coping Health Inventory for Parents …
The Role Of Tumor-Associated Macrophages In Human Skin Cancer, Nika Cyrus
The Role Of Tumor-Associated Macrophages In Human Skin Cancer, Nika Cyrus
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Inflammation has long been associated with tumorigenesis. Macrophages are cells of the innate immune system, whose density within tumors correlates with a worsening clinical prognosis in most types of tumors. Macrophages have been demonstrated to contribute to the initiation, growth, invasion, and metastasis of tumors. We hypothesized that macrophage density and phenotype differs between squamous cell carcinomas and basal cell carcinomas, two skin cancers with relatively aggressive and indolent clinical behaviors, respectively. Through immunohistochemical analysis, we determined that squamous cell carcinomas have a 5-fold higher density of macrophages than basal cell carcinomas. Tumor-associated macrophages exhibit two classic states of activation. …

Publications
This study was conducted to increase the bioactivity of litchi pericarp polysaccharides (LPPs) biotransformed by Aspergillus awamori. Compared to the non-A. awamori-fermented LPP, the growth effects of A. awamori-fermented LPP on Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus were four and two times higher after 3 days of fermentation, respectively. Increased 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity and DNA protection activity of litchi pericarp polysaccharides were also achieved after A. awamori fermentation. Moreover, the relative content of glucose and arabinose in LPP after fermentation decreased from 58.82% to 22.60% and from 18.82% to 10.09%, respectively, with a concomitant increase in the relative contents of …

Corn lily or California false hellebore (Veratrum californicum Durand), a perennial species native to the western United States, produces several alkaloid compounds. A derivative of these alkaloid compounds, primarily veratramine and cyclopamine, shows promise as a therapeutic agent for treatment of a variety of tumor types. Here we report the first study of corn lily cultivated in greenhouse. Growth response of corn lily was examined under two light levels (ambient and supplemental), two fertilization types (20 N-4.4 P- 16.6 K Peat-lite special and 15N-2.2P-12.5K CalMag special) at 100-mg·L-1 total nitrogen, and three irrigation cycles [sub-irrigation every day (wet), every third …

Species exposed to extreme environments often exhibit distinctive traits that help meet the demands of such habitats. Such traits could evolve independently, but under intense selective pressures of extreme environments some existing structures or behaviors might be coopted to meet specialized demands, evolving via the process of exaptation. We evaluated the potential for exaptation to have operated in the evolution of novel behaviors of the waterfall-climbing gobiid fish genus Sicyopterus. These fish use an ‘‘inching’’ behavior to climb waterfalls, in which an oral sucker is cyclically protruded and attached to the climbing surface. They also exhibit a distinctive feeding …

Single ventricle hearts are congenital cardiovascular defects in which the heart has only one functional pumping chamber. The treatment for these conditions typically requires a three-staged operative process where Stage 1 is typically achieved by a shunt between the systemic and pulmonary arteries, and Stage 2 by connecting the superior venous return to the pulmonary circulation. Surgically, the Stage 2 circulation can be achieved through a procedure called the Hemi-Fontan, which reconstructs the right atrium and pulmonary artery to allow for an enlarged confluence with the superior vena cava.
Based on pre-operative data obtained from two patients prior to Stage …

To better understand attachment from a cross-cultural and historical perspective, I have amassed over 200 cases from the ethnographic and archaeological records that reveal cultural models (D'Andrade and Strauss 1992) of infancy. The 200 cases represent all areas of the world, historical epochs from the Mesolithic to the present and all types of subsistence patterns (Appendix 1). The approach is inductive where cases with similar models of infancy are clustered into archetypes. My principal finding from this analysis is that, in the broadest overview, infants are, effectively, placed on probation and not immediately integrated into the society. Attachment failure is …

Estrogen Receptor Α Regulates Erk In Mcf-7 Cells, John M. Schmitt, Angela J. Rofelty
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
Abstract Estrogen (E2) signaling significantly affects breast tumorigenesis by enhancing cell growth and preventing apoptosis. The actions of estrogen in MCF-7 breast cancer cells are mediated through a kinase pathway involving CaM KK, CaM KI, and ERK. Current research is examining the involvement of the Estrogen Receptor (ER) alpha (α) and beta (β) as well as G-Protein Coupled Receptor GPR30 in cell growth and proliferation. ERα is suggested to be responsible for ERK and perhaps CaM Kinase activation. Our goal was to evaluate if ERα, rather than GPR30 or ERβ, mediates CaM KI and ERK activation upon treatment of MCF-7 …

Learning Hierarchical Representations For Video Analysis Using Deep Learning, Yang Yang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the exponential growth of the digital data, video content analysis (e.g., action, event recognition) has been drawing increasing attention from computer vision researchers. Effective modeling of the objects, scenes, and motions is critical for visual understanding. Recently there has been a growing interest in the bio-inspired deep learning models, which has shown impressive results in speech and object recognition. The deep learning models are formed by the composition of multiple non-linear transformations of the data, with the goal of yielding more abstract and ultimately more useful representations. The advantages of the deep models are three fold: 1) They learn …

Provider Perceptions Of Ableism And Social Support Networks In The Healthcare Setting, Darcey Mccampbell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study is to investigate ableism and social support networks in the healthcare setting. Social support networks play an important role in combating emotional distress in healthcare. They provide disabled patients a method for defending against the negative effects of ableism among other stressors. By definition, ableism refers to perceptions that disability is abnormal and undesirable. Ten healthcare providers in central Florida (i.e., in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and primary care offices) were interviewed, using in-depth face-to-face qualitative interviewing. Participants were asked questions relating to the effects of ableist language on patients with disabilities as well as …

Over The Borderline--A Review Of Margaret Price's Mad At School: Rhetorics Of Mental Disability And Academic Life, Gregory M. Duhl
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
This Article is about “madness” in higher education. In Mad at School: Rhetorics of Mental Disability and Academic Life, Professor Margaret Price analyzes the rhetoric and discourse surrounding mental disabilities in academia. In this Article, I place Price’s work in a legal context, discussing why the Americans with Disabilities Act fails those with mental illness and why reform is needed to protect them. My own narrative as a law professor with Borderline Personality Disorder frames my critique. Narratives of mental illness are important because they help connect those who are often stigmatized and isolated due to mental illness and …
