Pge 2 Desensitizes Β -Agonist Effect On Human Lung Fibroblast-Mediated Collagen Gel Contraction Through Opregulating Pde4, Qiuhong Fang, Yingmin Ma, Jing Wang, Joel Michalski, Stephen I. Rennard, Xiangde Liu

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

In the current study, we investigated the effect of a long-acting β -agonist (salmeterol) and a phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor (cilomilast) on human lung fibroblast-mediated collagen gel contraction. Higher concentrations of salmeterol (10(-7) and 10(-6) M) inhibited fibroblast-mediated collagen gel contraction. No effect was observed with cilomilast alone (up to 10(-5) M). In the presence of 10(-8) M salmeterol, however, cilomilast could significantly inhibit fibroblast-mediated collagen gel contraction in a concentration-dependent manner (10(-7) ~10(-5) M). Blockade of endogenous PGE2 by indomethacin further potentiated the inhibitory effect of salmeterol on fibroblast-mediated collagen gel contraction, but it did not affect cilomilast's effect. …

Analysis Of The Scale Of Parenting And Life Functioning Using The Rasch Measurement Model, Laricia Longworth-Reed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to examine dimensionality, reliability, invariance, targeting, scale use and functioning of items across subgroups for a sample of 278 on the Scale of Parenting and Life Functioning (SPLF). Analysis was conducted using a Rasch partial credit model. Overall, the SPLF showed good overall fit to the model. Unidimensionality of the scale was supported in the analysis, with over 60% of the raw variance explained by the measure. Item fit also provided evidence that the items fit the model. Scale categories displayed clear monotonicity. No differential item functioning was found for mother's age, race/ethnicity, …

A Remotely Sensed Global Terrestrial Drought Severity Index, Qiaozhen Mu, Maosheng Zhao, John S. Kimball, Nate Mcdowell, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Regional drought and flooding from extreme climatic events are increasing in frequency and severity, with significant adverse ecosocial impacts. Detecting and monitoring drought at regional to global scales remains challenging, despite the availability of various drought indices and widespread availability of potentially synergistic global satellite observational records. The authors have developed a method to generate a near-real-time remotely sensed drought severity index (DSI) to monitor and detect drought globally at 1-km spatial resolution and regular 8-day, monthly, and annual frequencies. The new DSI integrates and exploits information from current operational satellite-based terrestrial evapo-transpiration (ET) and vegetation greenness index [normalized difference …

Kinetic Models Reveal The In Vivo Mechanisms Of Mutagenesis In Microbes And Man, Barbara E. Wright, Karen H. Schmidt, Michael F. Minnick Jan 2013

Kinetic Models Reveal The In Vivo Mechanisms Of Mutagenesis In Microbes And Man, Barbara E. Wright, Karen H. Schmidt, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

This review summarizes the evidence indicating that mutagenic mechanisms in vivo are essentially the same in all living cells. Unique metabolic reactions to a particular environmental stress apparently target specific genes for increased rates of transcription and mutation, resulting in higher mutation rates for those genes most likely to solve the problem. Kinetic models which have demonstrated predictive value are described and are shown to simulate mutagenesis in vivo in Escherichia coli, the p53 tumor suppressor gene, and somatic hypermutation. In all three models, direct correlations are seen between mutation frequencies and transcription rates. G and C nucleosides in single-stranded …

Prolonged Dormancy Interacts With Senescence For Two Perennial Herbs, Juha Tuomi, Elizabeth E. Crone, Jennifer R. Gremer, Anne Jakalaniemi, Peter Lesica, Bard Pedersen, Satu Ramula Jan 2013

Prolonged Dormancy Interacts With Senescence For Two Perennial Herbs, Juha Tuomi, Elizabeth E. Crone, Jennifer R. Gremer, Anne Jakalaniemi, Peter Lesica, Bard Pedersen, Satu Ramula

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

1. Senescence is characterized by a decline in survival, fecundity and reproductive value with age among adult individuals. Simple age-dependent life cycles progress forward through developmental stages, with each successive stage being characterized by age-specific vital rates. In contrast, size- or stage-based life cycles for perennial plants are more complex and often include stasis and retrogression to previous vegetative or reproductive life stages, indicating possible slowing or even reversing the developmental progress.

2. Many plants remain in nonemergent, below-ground stages during the growing season (prolonged dormancy), which may affect the process of senescence. Stasis in the dormant stage implies that …

Morphological And Ecological Segregation Of Two Sympatric Lomatium Triternatum (Apiaceae) Varities In Montana, Peter Lesica, Pamela Kittelson

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The Lomatium triternatum complex is widespread in the Columbia River Basin. Lomatium triternatum (Pursh) J. M. Coult. & Rose var. triternatum and L. triternatum (Pursh) J. M. Coult. & Rose var. anomalum (M. E. Jones ex J. M. Coult. & Rose) Mathias are sympatric throughout much of their range and are reported to have similar fruit but different leaves. Plants of the two varieties repeatedly occur within 5–30 m of each other at an unusual site in northwest Montana, USA. We collected data on leaf and fruit morphological characters and habitat associations at this site to help address whether the …

The Search For "Strong Medicine": Pathways To Healthcare Development In Remote Nepal Using Gis, Catherine Lee Sanders, Kimber Haddix Mckay

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Nepalese agropastoralists’ confrontations with forces of change in the last generation have altered villagers’ abilities to gain access to health services, clean water, and nutrition in Humla District, Nepal. Development efforts and Nepal’s recent armed conflict, in particular, introduced novel technologies and ideologies that a subsection of villagers have responded to in a fashion that we did not expect. In this article, based on theories about the diffusion of innovation and risk, we argue that, together, villagers and other change agents have cocreated new contexts of vulnerability in the postconflict setting of rural Nepal, as observed in remote Humla District. …

Ethics And Geoengineering: Reviewing The Moral Issues Raised By Solar Radiation Management And Carbon Dioxide Removal, Christopher J. Preston Jan 2013

Ethics And Geoengineering: Reviewing The Moral Issues Raised By Solar Radiation Management And Carbon Dioxide Removal, Christopher J. Preston

Philosophy Faculty Publications

After two decades of failure by the international community to respond adequately to the threat of global climate change, discussions of the possibility of geoengineering a cooler climate have recently proliferated. Alongside the considerable optimism that these technologies have generated, there has also been wide acknowledgement of significant ethical concerns. Ethicists, social scientists, and experts in governance have begun the work of addressing these concerns. The plethora of ethical issues raised by geoengineering creates challenges for those who wish to survey them. The issues are here separated out according to the temporal spaces in which they first arise. Some crop …

Role Of Resonance-Enhanced Multiphoton Excitation In High-Harmonic Generation Of N-2: A Time-Dependent Density-Functional-Theory Study, Xi Chu, Gerrit C. Groenenboom Jan 2013

Role Of Resonance-Enhanced Multiphoton Excitation In High-Harmonic Generation Of N-2: A Time-Dependent Density-Functional-Theory Study, Xi Chu, Gerrit C. Groenenboom

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A minimum at similar to 39 eV is observed in the high-harmonic-generation spectra of N-2 for several laser intensities and frequencies. This minimum appears to be invariant for different molecular orientations. We reproduce this minimum for a set of laser parameters and orientations in time-dependent density-functional-theory calculations, which also render orientation-dependent maxima at 23-26 eV. Photon energies of these maxima overlap with ionization potentials of excited states observed in photoelectron spectra. Time profile analysis shows that these maxima are caused by resonance-enhanced multiphoton excitation. We propose a four-step mechanism, in which an additional excitation step is added to the well-accepted …

In October-November 2011 we measured trace gas emission factors from seven prescribed fires in South Carolina (SC), US, using two Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) systems and whole air sampling (WAS) into canisters followed by gas-chromatographic analysis. A total of 97 trace gas species were quantified from both airborne and ground-based sampling platforms, making this one of the most detailed field studies of fire emissions to date. The measurements include the first emission factors for a suite of monoterpenes produced by heating vegetative fuels during field fires. The first quantitative FTIR observations of limonene in smoke are reported along with …

Biophysical Approaches To Human Genetic Disease: Adsl Deficiency As A Model, Stephen P. Ray Jan 2013

Biophysical Approaches To Human Genetic Disease: Adsl Deficiency As A Model, Stephen P. Ray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biophysical tools are becoming more useful in approaching human genetic disease. The pathogenic mechanisms behind many disorders have been attributed to protein loss of function or gain in toxic function. For example, changes in the protein Adenylosuccinate Lyase (ADSL) lead to ADSL deficiency, a disorder that causes symptoms ranging from epilepsy to expression of autistic features. Biophysics offers different tools to study intrinsic properties of proteins. We have applied such tools to study the enzyme kinetics and protein stability of ADSL and two mutations (R426H and R303C) to formulate better hypotheses regarding the pathogenic mechanism. Enzyme kinetic findings indicate a) …

European Green Crab (Fact Sheet), Casco Bay Estuary Partnership Jan 2013

European Green Crab (Fact Sheet), Casco Bay Estuary Partnership

Publications

The European green crab, Carcinus maenas, an invasives species, has been pre-sent in Casco Bay for over 100 years (League-Pike and Shulman 2009). However, green crab populations have recently grown dramatically along Maine’s coast, resulting in serious impacts to marine ecosystems and coastal fisheries. Green crabs are voracious predators and consume a variety of marine species, including soft-shell clams, eels, scallops and blue mussels, posing a significant threat to these commercial fisheries. Officials estimate that green crabs are the most significant threat in decades to Maine’s $15.6 million soft-shell clam industry. Even Maine’s lobster fishery may be affected. Young lobsters …

Impacts From Ditching Salt Marshes In The Mid-Atlantic And Northeastern United States, David J. Tonjes Jan 2013

Impacts From Ditching Salt Marshes In The Mid-Atlantic And Northeastern United States, David J. Tonjes

Technology & Society Faculty Publications

Tidal inundation extent and duration, and water drainage and retention by marsh peat – marsh hydrology – determine most physical and ecological characteristics of salt marsh systems. Ditching, installed across nearly all marshes on the US East Coast by 1940 to control mosquitoes, alters marsh hydrology. Two linchpin papers are used here as springboards to review the literature that describes the resulting effects, which clearly include reduced water table height for most marshes and changes in avian populations. Effects on invertebrate populations, including mosquitoes, are generally less, although to a smaller degree than is sometimes reported. Impacts on nekton are …

The Mighty Work Of Making Nations Happy: A Response To James Davison Hunter, Patrick Mckinley Brennan Jan 2013

The Mighty Work Of Making Nations Happy: A Response To James Davison Hunter, Patrick Mckinley Brennan

Working Paper Series

This article is an invited response to James Davison Hunter’s much-discussed book To Change the World: The Irony, Tragedy, and Possibility of Christianity in the Late Modern World (Oxford University Press, 2010). Hunter, a sociologist at UVA and a believing Protestant, claims that law’s capacity to contribute to social change is “mostly illusory” and that Christians, therefore, should practice “faithful presence” in the public square rather than seek to influence law directly. My response is that it is, in fact, law’s stunning ability to alter and limit available choices that makes it an object of deservedly fierce contest. The wild …
