The Trouble With Mary Jane’S Gender, Wendy Chapkis Phd Jan 2013

The Trouble With Mary Jane’S Gender, Wendy Chapkis Phd

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This essay explores some of the gendered dimensions of contemporary cannabis politics and culture from the perspective of a long-time sexuality and gender scholar recently migrated into the world of drug policy reform. My essay suggests that inattention to gendered stereotypes and inequalities creates obstacles to women’s full participation in drug policy reform and complicates efforts to end marijuana prohibition in the U.S.

Generation Of Intracellular Reactive Oxygen Species And Genotixity Effect To Exposure Of Nanosized Polyamidoamine (Pamam) Dendrimers In Plhc-1 Cells In Vitro, Pratap Naha, Hugh Byrne Jan 2013

Generation Of Intracellular Reactive Oxygen Species And Genotixity Effect To Exposure Of Nanosized Polyamidoamine (Pamam) Dendrimers In Plhc-1 Cells In Vitro, Pratap Naha, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers elicit systematically variable cyto- and eco-toxic responses, promising the basis for structure activity relationships governing nanotoxicological responses. Increased production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), genotoxicity and apoptosis due to in-vitro exposure of hepatocellular carcinoma cells to dendrimer generations G-4, G-5 and G-6 is demonstrated. A generation dependent increase in ROS and genotoxicity was observed, consistent with our previous studies. The responses correlate well with the number of surface amino groups per generation. Although ROS production initially increases approximately linearly, it saturates at higher doses. Notably, normalised to molar dose of surface amino groups, the dose-dependent ROS …

Raman Spectroscopic Mapping For The Analysis Of Solar Radiation Induced Skin Damage, Hugh Byrne, Syed Mehmood Ali, Franck Bonnier, K. Ptasinski, Helen Lambkin, Kathleen Flynn, Fiona Lyng

Articles

The effects of simulated solar irradiation of an artificial skin model have been examined using Raman spectroscopy and the results are compared with cytotoxicological and histological profiling. Samples exposed for times varying between 30 minutes and 240 minutes were incubated post exposure for a period of 96hours. The cytotoxicological response as measured by the MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5- diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] assay demonstrated a ~50% loss of viability of the artificial tissue after 120 minutes exposure. Histological staining of tissue sections showed considerable loss of cellular content in the epidermal layer at this endpoint. Raman spectroscopic mapping of tissue sections, coupled with …

Interpreting Biological Similarity: Ongoing Challenges For Diverse Decision Makers, Sarah M. Cork Jan 2013

Interpreting Biological Similarity: Ongoing Challenges For Diverse Decision Makers, Sarah M. Cork

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Similarity is an elusive and complicated concept facing comparisons of biological molecules, as even minute changes to a molecule's structure can dramatically affect its function in the body. Yet the flood of biologic drugs on the market will increasingly force these similarity comparisons. These concerns are particularly relevant to two groups of drugs: families of biologic drugs that closely resemble each other in structure and function, here termed "similar-impact biologics," and the biosimilars, which are intended to closely approximate generic forms of biologic drugs. In bringing biologic drugs to the market, manufacturers are likely to face dual obstacles: FDA approval …

Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Farmer Training In Ghanaian Cocoa Farming, Mike Norton Jan 2013

Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Farmer Training In Ghanaian Cocoa Farming, Mike Norton

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

While billions of dollars flow into low-income countries each year to ease poverty, assessing their effectiveness beyond the life of a development program proves challengin. In 2009, the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) undertook the Cocoa Livelihoods Program (CLP) to strengthen cocoa-growing communities with training and credit programs. Using primary 2010-2011 production data collected in Ghana, this study estimates the net present value (NPV) change associated with CLP training over 50 years (two cocoa tree life cycles), assuming producers can utilize what they have learned well after the courses are completed. Applying regression analyses to determine the effect of CLP on …

Ultrahigh Dimensional Time Course Feature Selection, Peirong Xu, Lixing Zhu, Yi Li Jan 2013

Ultrahigh Dimensional Time Course Feature Selection, Peirong Xu, Lixing Zhu, Yi Li

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Statistical challenges arise from modern biomedical studies that produce time course genomic data with ultrahigh dimensions. In a renal cancer study that motivated this paper, the pharmacokinetic measures of a tumor suppressor (CCI-779) and expression levels of 12625 genes were measured for each of 33 patients at 8 and 16 weeks after the start of treatments, with the goal of identifying predictive gene transcripts and the interactions with time in peripheral blood mononuclear cells for pharmacokinetics over the time course. The resulting dataset defies analysis even with regularized regression. Although some remedies have been proposed for both linear and generalized …

Semiparametric Transformation Models For Semicompeting Survival Data, Huazhen Lin, Ling Zhou, Chunhong Li, Yi Li Jan 2013

Semiparametric Transformation Models For Semicompeting Survival Data, Huazhen Lin, Ling Zhou, Chunhong Li, Yi Li

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Semicompeting risk outcome data, e.g. time to disease progression and time to death, are commonly collected in clinical trials, but complicated analytical tools hamper the analysis and the interpretation of the results. We propose a novel semiparametric transformation model for such data. Compared with the existing models, our model is advantageous in the following distinctive ways. First, it allows us to provide direct estimators of the regression analysis and the association parameter. Second, the measure of surrogacy, for example, the proportion of treatment effect and relative effect, can also be directly obtained. We propose a two-stage estimation procedure for inference …

Score Test Variable Screening, Sihai Dave Zhao, Yi Li Jan 2013

Score Test Variable Screening, Sihai Dave Zhao, Yi Li

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Variable screening has emerged as a crucial first step in the analysis of high-throughput data, but existing procedures can be computationally cumbersome, difficult to justify theoretically, or inapplicable to certain types of analyses. Motivated by a high-dimensional censored quantile regression problem in multiple myeloma genomics, this paper makes three contributions. First, we establish a score test-based screening framework, which is widely applicable, extremely computationally efficient, and relatively simple to justify. Secondly, we propose a resampling-based procedure for selecting the number of variables to retain after screening according to the principle of reproducibility. Finally, we propose a new iterative score test …

Covariance-Enhanced Discriminant Analysis, Peirong Xu, Ji Zhu, Lixing Zhu, Yi Li Jan 2013

Covariance-Enhanced Discriminant Analysis, Peirong Xu, Ji Zhu, Lixing Zhu, Yi Li

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA), a classical method in pattern recognition and machine learning, has been widely used to characterize or separate multiple classes via linear combinations of features. However, the high-dimensionality of the high-throughput features obtained from modern biological experiments, for example, microarray or proteomics, defies traditional discriminant analysis techniques. The possible interfeature correlations present additional challenges and are often under-utilized in modeling. In this paper, by incorporating the possible inter-feature correlations, we propose a Covariance-Enhanced Discriminant Analysis (CEDA) method that simultaneously and consistently selects informative features and identifies the corresponding discriminable classes. We show that, under mild regularity conditions, …

Morphology, Gas Exchange, And Chlorophyll Content Of Longleaf Pine Seedlings In Response To Rooting Volume, Copper Root Pruning, And Nitrogen Supply In A Container Nursery, R. Kasten Dumroese, Shi-Jean Susana Sung, Jeremiah R. Pinto, Amy Ross-Davis, D. Andrew Scott Jan 2013

Morphology, Gas Exchange, And Chlorophyll Content Of Longleaf Pine Seedlings In Response To Rooting Volume, Copper Root Pruning, And Nitrogen Supply In A Container Nursery, R. Kasten Dumroese, Shi-Jean Susana Sung, Jeremiah R. Pinto, Amy Ross-Davis, D. Andrew Scott

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Few pine species develop a seedling grass stage; this growth phase, characterized by strong, carrot-like taproots and a stem-less nature, poses unique challenges during nursery production. Fertilization levels beyond optimum could result in excessive diameter growth that reduces seedling quality as measured by the root bound index (RBI). We grew longleaf pine (Pinus palustris), a grass stage species, in containers of four different volumes (60–336 ml) either coated with copper oxychloride or left untreated and fertilized at low, medium, or high levels of nitrogen (N). In general, N concentration of tissues rose as N rate increased, with larger …

Interrelationships Between Diglyphus Isaea, Phaedrotoma Scabriventris And Endophytic Fungi In The Control Of Liriomyza Leafminers, Komivi Senyo Akutse Jan 2013

Interrelationships Between Diglyphus Isaea, Phaedrotoma Scabriventris And Endophytic Fungi In The Control Of Liriomyza Leafminers, Komivi Senyo Akutse

All PhD Dissertations

Horticulture is a major foreign exchange earner in Kenya and provides employment to approximately 75% of the population. However, the growth of the horticultural industry is constrained by pests such as the leafminer flies, Liriomyza sativae, L. trifolii and L. huidobrensis (Diptera: Agromyzidae). These pests do not only cause damage to crops, but are also tagged as quarantine pests, resulting in export rejections, loss of export markets and consequently loss of revenue to smallholders. The management of leafminers worldwide has commonly relied on the use of chemical insecticides, but due to associated negative effects thereof, biological control using parasitoids and …

Molecular Characteristics And Putative Functions Of Reproduction-Associated Proteins Ofanopheles Gambiae Mosquito, Achinko Daniel Ayehngwo Jan 2013

Molecular Characteristics And Putative Functions Of Reproduction-Associated Proteins Ofanopheles Gambiae Mosquito, Achinko Daniel Ayehngwo

All PhD Dissertations

In Anopheles gambiae mosquito vector of malaria, mating is mediated by transfer of a plug (mating plug protein) from males to females. In the females, the constituents of the plug include male accessory glands (MAGs) proteins and female specific proteins that influence ovulation, oviposition, lifetime refractoriness to mating and other post-mating behaviors in the females. Manipulation of the plug can significantly affect the reproduction potential and concomitant population density of the vector. Investigations were conducted to establish in the mosquito 1) putative structural properties of MAGs proteins (transglutaminase and plugin) mediating successful interaction for mating-plug formation in the male An. …

Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers

We examined the relationship between grip strength declines and muscle-tendon responses induced by long-term performance of a high-repetition, low-force (HRLF) reaching task in rats. We hypothesized that grip strength declines would correlate with inflammation, fibrosis and degradation in flexor digitorum muscles and tendons. Grip strength declined after training, and further in weeks 18 and 24, in reach limbs of HRLF rats. Flexor digitorum tissues of reach limbs showed low-grade increases in inflammatory cytokines: IL-1β after training and in week 18, IL-1α in week 18, TNF-α and IL-6 after training and in week 24, and IL-10 in week 24, with greater …

Fisheries Research Reports

Throughout Western Australia Fisheries and Marine Officers (FMOs) play a vital role in ensuring the sustainability of fish resources. Since July 1998, in the course of their other compliance activities, FMOs have collected information from recreational fishers on their catch and fishing trip. The primary objective of this report was to summarise the data collected by FMOs and ascertain the effectiveness of the convenience (i.e. unstructured) sampling technique for determining trends in recreational fishing patterns throughout Western Australia. Recreational fishing data was collected by FMOs during 6 629 land-based and boat-based patrols completed between 1998/99 – 2009/10, mostly within the …

Solutions Of Dynamic Equations On Time Scales With Jumps, Kayode Daniel Olumoyin Jan 2013

Solutions Of Dynamic Equations On Time Scales With Jumps, Kayode Daniel Olumoyin

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

To obtain the solution of first order dynamic equations on time scales with jumps, a good question to ask is, how many initial conditions will be needed? We shall show that you only need the initial condition that gives you either the initial position or the initial velocity. The solution at each left scattered point in the time scale can be obtained analytically. With this approach we shall write the general form of the solution of a first order dynamic equations on time scales with jumps. To do this we shall use the Hilger derivative, anti-derivatives, the Hilger Complex plane, …

Dietary Preference Of The Queensnake (Regina Septemvittata), Timothy J. Brust Jan 2013

Dietary Preference Of The Queensnake (Regina Septemvittata), Timothy J. Brust

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Queensnake (Regina septemvittata) is a small secretive water snake found throughout the eastern United States. Once common, their numbers have declined to the extent that they are now threatened throughout most of their range, largely the result of pollutant-based reduction in prey species. These snakes are assumed to eat molted crayfish exclusively. For some common crayfish species, molting happens only twice a summer during a two- week period. It has not been documented if Queensnakes eat anything besides crayfish on a regular basis. The purpose of this study was to determine the prey preference of Queensnakes with particular focus …

Cognitive And Non-Cognitive Predictors Of The Quality Of Life Of The Elderly In Selected Provinces In The Philippines, Daisy R. Palompon, Marylou B. Ong

CNU Journal of Higher Education

This study determined the cognitive (educational attainment and cognitive ability) and non-cognitive (marital status, basic activities of daily living, instrumental ADL, social support and spirituality) factors that predict the quality of life of older adults admitted into elderly institutions and community-dwelling elderly. Utilizing a correlational design, the study involved 263 elderly participants ( 100 institutionalized and 163 community-dwelling) in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. Using regression analysis, marital status, instrumental ADL and social support were considered significant predictors of QoL among the institutionalized elderly. On the other hand, marital status, educational attainment, basic ADL, instrumental ADL and social support significantly …

Gunnison Sage-Grouse: Proposed Listing And Responsibilities Under The Endangered Species Act, Sarah Fierce Jan 2013

Gunnison Sage-Grouse: Proposed Listing And Responsibilities Under The Endangered Species Act, Sarah Fierce

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

What is Gunnison sage-grouse? Description: Gunnison sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus) are charismatic birds known for their elaborate mating ritual where males congregate on leks (breeding grounds) and strut, or “dance”, to attract mates. Leks are typically open areas with short vegetation within sagebrush habitats, often located on broad ridges, benches, or valley floors where visibility and hearing acuity are optimal. Gunnison sage-grouse are most easily identified by their large size, dark brown color, distinctive black bellies, long, pointed tails, and association with sagebrush habitats. During the breeding season, males have conspicuous filoplumes (specialized neck feathers), a black bib …

Review Article Mycobacterium Bovis (Bovine Tuberculosis) Infection In North American Wildlife: Current Status And Opportunities For Mitigation Of Risks Of Further Infection In Wildlife Populations, R. S. Miller, S. J. Sweeney

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis), the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis, has been identified in nine geographically distinct wildlife populations in North America and Hawaii and is endemic in at least three populations, including members of the Bovidae, Cervidae, and Suidae families. The emergence of M. bovis in North American wildlife poses a serious and growing risk for livestock and human health and for the recreational hunting industry. Experience in many countries, including the USA and Canada, has shown that while M. bovis can be controlled when restricted to livestock species, it is almost impossible to eradicate once it has spread …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Vesicular stomatitis is a viral disease primarily affecting horses and cattle when it occurs in the United States. Outbreaks in the southwestern United States occur sporadically, with initial cases typically occurring in Texas, New Mexico, or Arizona and subsequent cases occurring in a northward progression. The viruses causing vesicular stomatitis can be transmitted by direct contact of lesioned animals with other susceptible animals, but transmission is primarily through arthropod vectors. In 2012, an outbreak of vesicular stomatitis in the United States occurred that was caused by Vesicular stomatitis New Jersey virus serotype. Overall, 51 horses on 36 premises in 2 …

United States Army: Publications

The C-terminal 19-kDa domain of Plasmodium falciparum merozoite surface protein 1 (PfMSP119) is an established target of protective antibodies. However, clinical trials of PfMSP142, a leading blood-stage vaccine candidate which contains the protective epitopes of PfMSP119, revealed suboptimal immunogenicity and efficacy. Based on proof-of-concept studies in the Plasmodium yoelii murine model, we produced a chimeric vaccine antigen containing recombinant PfMSP119 (rPfMSP119) fused to the N terminus of P. falciparum merozoite surface protein 8 that lacked its low-complexity Asn/Asp-rich domain, rPfMSP8 (Asn/ Asp). Immunization of mice with the chimeric rPfMSP1/8 vaccine elicited …
