Dopaminergic Modulation Of Glutamate Signaling In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Melvin Suman Baidya
Dopaminergic Modulation Of Glutamate Signaling In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Melvin Suman Baidya
Theses Digitization Project
This study investigates how DA (dopamine) modulates GLU (glutamate) signaling at the interneuron level of the C. elegans avoidance circuit in response to the noxious chemical 1-octanol. Many neural processes involved in addiction, exhibit cellular mechanisms using the neurotransmitters dopamine and glutamate along with their intracellular and genomic targets.
Preweanling Exposure To Selective Catecholamine Transporter Inhibitors Differentially Effects Morphine-Induced Antinociception In Adulthood, Joseph Marco Valentine
Preweanling Exposure To Selective Catecholamine Transporter Inhibitors Differentially Effects Morphine-Induced Antinociception In Adulthood, Joseph Marco Valentine
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this project is to determine how early methylphenidate exposure alters opioid receptor functioning in adulthood. To this end, we will administer selective monoamine transporter inhibitors for dopamine and norepinephrine (GBR-12904 and atomoxetine) during preweanling period and assess opioid function in adult rats by testing morphine-induced antinociception using the hot-plate and tail-flick tasks. In order to assess the effects of methylphenidate use on brain functions during development, investigations have been conducted in rats using ages roughly analogous to early and late childhood.

A Mind-Body Approach To Promote Health And Enhance Healing, Lisa Dionne Meyering
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this project was to create for the public a research-based user-friendly booklet that provides guidance with regard to psychological considerations that may be employed to enhance, or accelerate, the process of healing from illness.
Genetic Analysis Of The Gene Varpa_4519 Encoding A Nonribosomal Peptide Synthetase Crucial For Surfactant Production In Variovorax Paradoxus Eps, Richard John Fredendall
Genetic Analysis Of The Gene Varpa_4519 Encoding A Nonribosomal Peptide Synthetase Crucial For Surfactant Production In Variovorax Paradoxus Eps, Richard John Fredendall
Theses Digitization Project
This study investigated swarming by Variovoras paradoxus EPS to understand the genes involved and the mechanisms for swarming motility. Swarming motility is defined as a movement on a surface requiring surfactant and flagella. Swarming is a differentiation process in which bacteria enter into an excited state of constant movement. The mechanism for swarming is driven by nutrient factors, and is not based on specific development stages of the bacterial life cycle.

Galton To Himmler: An Archeology Of Eugenics Discourse, Jeffery Logan Clark
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this project is to trace interdiscursive and intertextual relations between ancient and modern social discourses that allow and constitute Francis Galton's eugenics discourse, and how Francis Galton's eugenics discourse effects change in other social discourses of the twentieth century.

An Update On Braf Inhibitors And Other New Molecular Targets For The Treatment Of Malignant Melanoma Of The Skin, M. O. Faruk Khan, Carroll L. Ramos
An Update On Braf Inhibitors And Other New Molecular Targets For The Treatment Of Malignant Melanoma Of The Skin, M. O. Faruk Khan, Carroll L. Ramos
Pharmaceutical Science and Research
Malignant melanoma of the skin originates from mutations in melanocytes and can be lethal if unrecognized or untreated in its earlier stages. Deaths from melanoma are increasing in the United States and around the world every year. The available treatments produce low rates of response with modest survival impact. Among potential molecular targets under investigation, which are mostly in the tyrosine kinase pathway, the BRAF (V-raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1) gene is the best studied and most frequently reported mutation in melanoma. The molecular targets for melanoma treatment, promising drugs for future melanoma treatment as well as the …
Rethinking Assessment: Understanding How The Millenial Generation Learns In The College Classroom, Joseph R. Stasio
Rethinking Assessment: Understanding How The Millenial Generation Learns In The College Classroom, Joseph R. Stasio
Pedagogy and the Human Sciences
This paper will explore a number of profiling issues presented by the millennial generation, the nature of their challenges in learning, and the concomitant challenges in current teaching and assessment efforts. Significant implications for the future will be discussed, such as strategies for a classroom setting, listening to today’s students and constantly updating our teaching methodologies.

Maintaining The Mental Model: An Exploratory Study Of Dialogic Processes On Good Teaching Practice, Margaret Koepke Fox, Debra A. Harkins, Kurt W. Fischer
Pedagogy and the Human Sciences
This paper presents some outcomes of an exploratory, mixed-method study that examined mental models of teaching and understanding of learning processes in 26 educators from a small suburb in the Northeastern United States. Participants, in semi-structured written interviews, were asked to rate variables contributing to their mental model of effective teaching. They were then presented with a specific educational problem and asked to provide pedagogic solutions. One finding of this exploration was that some educators did not adhere to their own described mental model of best teaching practices when faced with an educational problem. However, those who responded to the …

Still Desperately Seeking Citations: Undergraduate Research In The Age Of Web-Scale Discovery., Lisa Rose-Wiles, Melissa M. Hofmann
Praxis Publications
Web-scale discovery services promise fast, easy searching from a single Google-like box, pleasing users and making library resources more discoverable. Some librarians embrace the concept of giving users what they have come to expect from Google, while others are concerned that this will “dumb down” searching and undermine information literacy. In this paper we explore the potential impact of web-scale discovery tools on information literacy, focusing particularly on undergraduate research skills. We review the existing literature and present findings and experiences from two mid-sized academic libraries that have adopted EBSCO Discovery Service as their library home page portal.
Bathroom Bias: Making The Case For Trans Rights Under Disability Law, Daniella A. Schmidt
Bathroom Bias: Making The Case For Trans Rights Under Disability Law, Daniella A. Schmidt
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Disability law is one of the more successful tools currently being used to protect trans people fom discrimination. While the use of disability law as a framework for affirming or creating trans rights has come with some success, many in the community remain reluctant to use disability law for fear of the policy implications and stigma associated with medicalization of trans identity. After exploring the current state of the law on both the federal and state level, this Note will argue how disability law both could and should be used more often to further trans protections. In particular, this Note …

Normal Cochlear Lateral Wall Permeability To Fluorescent Macromolecules, Veronica E. Henson
Independent Studies and Capstones
Damage to the stria vascularis resulting in leakage of macromolecules from the capillaries has been indicated in research as undermining the endocochlear potential. Results indicate normal paracellular diffusion and caveolae-mediated transcytosis, suggesting normal permeability that does not necessitate pathology or undermine the endocochlear potential.

Application Of Remote Sensing In Aquatic Ecosystems, Foad Yousef
Application Of Remote Sensing In Aquatic Ecosystems, Foad Yousef
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
I utilized state the art remote sensing and GIS (Geographical Information System) techniques to study large scale biological, physical and ecological processes of coastal, nearshore, and offshore waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. These processes ranged from chlorophyll a and primary production time series analysies in Lake Michigan to coastal stamp sand threats on Buffalo Reef in Lake Superior. I used SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor) satellite imagery to trace various biological, chemical and optical water properties of Lake Michigan during the past decade and to investigate the collapse of early spring primary production. Using spatial analysis techniques, I …
