Development Of Theory Of Mind In English-Speaking Chinese Singaporean Preschoolers, Li Qu, Pinxiu Shen, Fan Qianqian

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The current study examines Theory of Mind (ToM) development in English-speaking ethnically Chinese 3- to 6-year-old children raised in Singapore, a country influenced by both eastern and western cultures. All tasks were administered in English. Study 1 investigated the vertical development of ToM in 3- to 6-year-olds (N = 65) with five tasks, including diverse desires, diverse beliefs, knowledge access, content false-belief, and explicit false-belief tasks. Results revealed that like English-speaking preschoolers growing up in the West, English-speaking Chinese Singaporean preschoolers develop the understanding of diverse desires and diverse beliefs earlier than the understanding of knowledge access and false beliefs; …

Faculty Publications

Taxodium Rich. is a genus of the family Cupressaceae. The trees are especially prized for their rot and termite resistant wood. Taxodium leaves and cones, which are particularly rich in essential oils were used as folk medicine to treat skin, gastro-intestinal, respiratory, inflammation, and infections. Preliminary bio-activity assays reported antimicrobial, antitumor, antitermitic, antispasmodic and bronchodilator activities of the extracts or isolates from Taxodium but further pharmacological investigations of bio-active compounds are not available. To data, at least 130 compounds have been identified from extant or fossil Taxodium. Fifty-seven compounds have been isolated primarily from the cones, leaves, and branches of extant …

The Role Of Elevation And Soil Chemistry In The Distribution And Ion Accumulation Of Floral Morphs Of Streptanthus Polygaloides Gray (Brassicaceae), A Californian Nickel Hyperaccumulator, N Pope, M Fong, R Boyd, N Rajakaruna Jan 2013

The Role Of Elevation And Soil Chemistry In The Distribution And Ion Accumulation Of Floral Morphs Of Streptanthus Polygaloides Gray (Brassicaceae), A Californian Nickel Hyperaccumulator, N Pope, M Fong, R Boyd, N Rajakaruna

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Background: The flora of serpentine/ultramafic soils provides an excellent model system for the study of natural selection in plant populations. Streptanthus polygaloides is a nickel hyperaccumulator that is endemic to serpentine soils in the Sierra Nevada of California, and has four floral morphs (yellow, purple, yellow-to-purple and undulate). Aims: We investigate three hypotheses: (1) the purple morph occurs in colder, wetter climates than the yellow morph; (2) tissue–soil ionic relationships differ among morphs; and (3) morphs occur on soils with differing elemental concentrations. Methods: We queried herbarium records to investigate patterns of occurrence among the yellow and purple floral morphs, …

Brief Communication: Evolution Of A Specific O Allele (O1vg542a) Supports Unique Ancestry Of Native Americans, Fernando A. Villanea, Deborah A. Bolnick, Cara Monroe, Rosita Worl, Rosemary Cambra, Alan M. Leventhal, Brian M. Kemp Jan 2013

Brief Communication: Evolution Of A Specific O Allele (O1vg542a) Supports Unique Ancestry Of Native Americans, Fernando A. Villanea, Deborah A. Bolnick, Cara Monroe, Rosita Worl, Rosemary Cambra, Alan M. Leventhal, Brian M. Kemp

Faculty Publications, Anthropology

In this study, we explore the geographic and temporal distribution of a unique variant of the O blood group allele called O1vG542A, which has been shown to be shared among Native Americans but is rare in other populations. O1vG542A was previously reported in Native American populations in Mesoamerica and South America, and has been proposed as an ancestry informative marker. We investigated whether this allele is also found in the Tlingit and Haida, two contemporary indigenous populations from Alaska, and a pre-Columbian population from California. If O1vG542A is present in Na-Dene speakers (i.e., Tlingits), it would indicate that Na-Dene speaking …

Relationships Between Net Primary Production, Water Transparency, Chlorophyll A, And Total Phosphorus In Oak Lake, Brookings County, South Dakota, Lyntausha Kuehl, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr. Jan 2013

Relationships Between Net Primary Production, Water Transparency, Chlorophyll A, And Total Phosphorus In Oak Lake, Brookings County, South Dakota, Lyntausha Kuehl, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

Lake trophic state is of primary concern for water resource managers and is used as a measure of water quality and classification for beneficial uses. Secchi transparency, total phosphorus and chlorophyll a are surrogate measurements used in the calculation of trophic state indices (TSI) which classify waters as oligotrophic, mesotrophic, eutrophic or hypereutrophic. Yet the relationships between these surrogate measurements and direct measures of lake productivity vary regionally and may be influenced by external factors such as non-algal turbidity. Prairie pothole basins, common throughout eastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota, are shallow glacial lakes subject to frequent winds and sediment …

Occupational Engagement And Health In Older South Asian Immigrants, Sheama R. Krishnagiri, Erin Fuller, Lesley Ruda, Sadhna Diwan

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate the elements that shape how healthy active South Asian elder immigrants engage in daily activities to maintain their health. A descriptive grounded theory approach was employed using semi-structured interviews and a daily activity chart. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 12 South Asian elders, 7 males and 5 females, who immigrated after retirement to the South San Francisco Bay area. Open, axial, and selective coding of the transcribed data led to two broad themes, control and interdependence. These themes may be viewed as dynamic and interconnected forces that shape and determine the …

Thriving In The 21st Century By Tackling Wicked Problems, Judith A. Ramaley Jan 2013

Thriving In The 21st Century By Tackling Wicked Problems, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

More than 20 years ago, I was a member of a leadership roundtable in Portland, Oregon, that was working on achieving the ambitious goal of 100 percent graduation rate from high school. In the course of our deliberations, we finally asked ourselves why young people were dropping out of school. After listening to a number of experts talk about retention, we thought to ask ourselves, “What would the young people themselves say?” To find out, we invited a group of young high school dropouts and high school student leaders to an afternoon conversation. The experts had talked about various strategies …

Effects Of Climate Change On Phenology Of Blackbirds And Orioles (Icterids) In Eastern South Dakota, Kelsey Bedford, Nicole Burkard, Brandi Crider, Emma Barnett, N. H. Troelstrup Jr. Jan 2013

Effects Of Climate Change On Phenology Of Blackbirds And Orioles (Icterids) In Eastern South Dakota, Kelsey Bedford, Nicole Burkard, Brandi Crider, Emma Barnett, N. H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

Birds are among the first responders to climate change, often having clearly observable phenological responses to less perceptible levels of climate shift. Declines in populations of a number of bird species have been witnessed both in the United States and abroad, with up to a 48% decline in grassland birds of the Central U.S. Understanding changes in bird abundance and distribution is essential because birds supply a wide variety of critical ecosystem services, including pollination and pest control. While the effects of climate change on many bird species’ phenology have been studied intensely, research on the family Icteridae is limited. …

The Influence Of Maternal Energy Status During Mid‐Gestationon Beef Offspring Carcass Characteristics And Meat Quality, D. A Mohrhauser, A.R. Taylor, K.R. Underwood, R.H. Pritchard, A.E. Wertz-Lutz, A.D. Weaver Jan 2013

The Influence Of Maternal Energy Status During Mid‐Gestationon Beef Offspring Carcass Characteristics And Meat Quality, D. A Mohrhauser, A.R. Taylor, K.R. Underwood, R.H. Pritchard, A.E. Wertz-Lutz, A.D. Weaver

South Dakota Beef Report, 2013

Research has suggested that maternal under‐nutrition may cause the development of a thrifty phenotype in the offspring, potentially resulting in greater adiposity and reduced muscle mass. These alterations in fat and muscle development could have lasting impacts on offspring growth, carcass characteristics, and meat quality. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the influence of maternal energy status during mid‐gestation on offspring carcass characteristics and meat quality. To alter maternal energy status, cows either grazed pasture or were fed in a dry‐lot at 80% of the energy requirements for body weight maintenance during a mean period of 109 …

Variable Levels Of Atmospheric Oxygen Do Not Affect Microanatomy And Limb Bone Geometry In Alligator Mississippiensis, Susan Lee Lujan

Theses Digitization Project

Striking changes in atmospheric oxygen levels have occured since the beginning of the Phanerozic 542 million years ago. Alligators belong to a clade of vertebrates with a long evolutionary history spanning much of this variability in atmospheric oxygen. An investigation into the effects of hypoxia and hyperoxia on skeletal growth and physiology in alligators may help to reconstruct the life history of archosaurs, explain patterns in the fossil record, and broaden our understanding of the processes underlying long term success of this clade.

Adolescent And Adult Nicotine Exposure On The Acquisition Of Methamphetamine Self-Administration And The Reinstatement Of Extinguished Methamphetamine-Seeking In Male Rats, Joseph Allan Pipkin Jan 2013

Adolescent And Adult Nicotine Exposure On The Acquisition Of Methamphetamine Self-Administration And The Reinstatement Of Extinguished Methamphetamine-Seeking In Male Rats, Joseph Allan Pipkin

Theses Digitization Project

This study sought to determine the individual and combined contribution of adolescent and adult nicotine exposure on METH self-administration and METH-seeking behavior in male rats. Nicotine is a commonly abused substance among adolescents and is believed to be a "gateway" to other drugs of abuse. In support of the gateway hypothesis, cigarette smoking during adolescence is related to increased methamphetamine (METH) use in adulthood.
