Infrastructure, Standards, And Policies For Research Data Management, Jian Qin
Infrastructure, Standards, And Policies For Research Data Management, Jian Qin
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
This paper discusses the needs and importance of research data management and introduces the concept of research data management as an infrastructure service. Although many resources have been made available for research data management, most of them are developed as “islands” and lack linking mechanisms. The lack of integrated and interconnected resources has contributed to high cost and duplicated efforts in data management operations. The vision of research data management as an infrastructure service is not only to improve the efficiency of research data management but also the productivity of the research enterprise. Each of the three dimensions—infrastructure, standards, and …

Optimization And Characterization Of The Bulk Fda Viability Assay To Quantify Living Planktonic Biomass, Brian N. Maurer
Optimization And Characterization Of The Bulk Fda Viability Assay To Quantify Living Planktonic Biomass, Brian N. Maurer
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The detection and quantification of viable aquatic biomass, especially of the microbial community, is a fundamental aspect of ecological, oceanographic, environmental and other specialized fields. The abundance and activity of aquatic microbial communities and how they change in space, time or in response to some environmental perturbation are subjects of significant research interest. Environmental management officials and technicians must quantify viable marine microorganisms in waste, gray, drinking and ballast water to determine if regulations are met. Unfortunately, few methods exist to assess viable biomass; those that do are often laborious, unreliable, expensive, qualitative rather than quantitative, or restricted to the …

Physical Mistreatment In Persons With Alzheimer’S Disease, Gregory Paveza, Carla Vandeweerd, Margaret Walsh, Jaime Corvin
Physical Mistreatment In Persons With Alzheimer’S Disease, Gregory Paveza, Carla Vandeweerd, Margaret Walsh, Jaime Corvin
Library Scholarship
Physical mistreatment has been estimated to affect 2 million older persons each year and dramatically affects health outcomes. While researchers have attempted to examine risk factors for specific forms of abuse, many have been able to focus on only victim or perpetrator characteristics, or a limited number of psychosocial variables at any one time. Additionally, data on risk factors for subgroups such as persons with Alzheimer’s disease who may have heightened and/or unique risk profiles has also been limited. This paper examines risk for physical violence in caregiver/patient dyads who participated in the Aggression and Violence in Community-Based Alzheimer’s Families …
A Novel Sodium Channel In The Mammalian Taste System, Melissa N. Fillmore
A Novel Sodium Channel In The Mammalian Taste System, Melissa N. Fillmore
Biology Posters
Salty taste, one of the five taste qualities recognized in the mammalian peripheral gustatory system is thought to be mediated by an ion channel receptor. The epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, is thought to be the channel for salt taste transduction. ENaC is crucial in regulating salt reabsorption, helps control overall salt and water homeostasis in an organism, and contributes to blood pressure. While ENaC plays an important role in salt taste perception, it is responsible for only part of the total sodium transduction pathway in humans, suggesting that there may be another component in the salt transduction mechanism. We have …

An Introduction To Latent Variable Mixture Modeling (Part 2): Longitudinal Latent Class Growth Analysis And Growth Mixture Models, Kristoffer S. Berlin, Gilbert R. Parra, Natalie A. Williams
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Objective — Pediatric psychologists are often interested in finding patterns in heterogeneous longitudinal data. Latent Variable Mixture Modeling is an emerging statistical approach that models such heterogeneity by classifying individuals into unobserved groupings (latent classes) with similar (more homogenous) patterns. The purpose of the second of a two article set is to offer a nontechnical introduction to longitudinal latent variable mixture modeling.
Methods — 3 latent variable approaches to modeling longitudinal data are reviewed and distinguished.
Results — Step-by-step pediatric psychology examples of latent growth curve modeling, latent class growth analysis, and growth mixture modeling are provided using the Early …

Forest Development And Carbon Dynamics After Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreaks, E. Matthew Hansen
Forest Development And Carbon Dynamics After Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreaks, E. Matthew Hansen
The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography
Mountain pine beetles periodically infest pine forests in western North America, killing many or most overstory pine stems. The surviving secondary stand structure, along with recruited seedlings, will form the future canopy. Thus, even-aged pine stands become multiaged and multistoried. The species composition of affected stands will depend on the presence of nonpines and outbreak severity, among other factors, and can range from continued dominance by pines to hastened conversion to more shade-tolerant species. The loss of mature host trees results in reductions of ecosystem carbon productivity. The surviving and recruited stems, however, grow more quickly in response to the …

The interplay among pain, allergy and dysregulated inflammation promises to yield significant conceptual advances in immunology and chronic pain. Hapten-mediated contact hypersensitivity reactions are used to model skin allergies in rodents but have not been utilized to study associated changes in pain perception in the affected skin. Here we characterized changes in mechanical hyperalgesia in oxazolone-sensitized female mice challenged with single and repeated labiar skin exposure to oxazolone. Female mice were sensitized with topical oxazolone on their flanks and challenged 1-3 times on the labia. We then measured mechanical sensitivity of the vulvar region with an electronic pressure meter and …

Age Structure Of Moose (Alces Alces) Killed By Gray Wolves (Canis Lupus) In Northeastern Minnesota, 1967–2011, L. David Mech, Michael E. Nelson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The ages of 77 adult Moose (Alces alces) killed by gray Wolves (Canis lupus) during the period 1967–2011 in northeastern Minnesota were significantly older than those of a sample of 17 585 Moose killed by hunters in nearby Ontario. Our findings support those of earlier studies of protected Moose populations in national parks that found that gray Wolves tend to kill disproportionately more older Moose.

A National Approach For Integrating Wildfire Simulation Modeling Into Wildland Urban Interface Risk Assessments Within The United States, Jessica R. Haas, David E. Calkin, Matthew P. Thompson
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Ongoing human development into fire-prone areas contributes to increasing wildfire risk to human life. It is critically important, therefore, to have the ability to characterize wildfire risk to populated places, and to identify geographic areas with relatively high risk. A fundamental component of wildfire risk analysis is establishing the likelihood of wildfire occurrence and interaction with social and ecological values. A variety of fire modeling systems exist that can provide spatially resolved estimates of wildfire likelihood, which when coupled with maps of values-at-risk enable probabilistic exposure analysis. With this study we demonstrate the feasibility and utility of pairing burn probabilities …

Introduction
Acute kidney injury (AKI) can evolve quickly and clinical measures of function often fail to detect AKI at a time when interventions are likely to provide benefit. Identifying early markers of kidney damage has been difficult due to the complex nature of human AKI, in which multiple etiologies exist. The objective of this study was to identify and validate novel biomarkers of AKI.
Methods
We performed two multicenter observational studies in critically ill patients at risk for AKI - discovery and validation. The top two markers from discovery were validated in a second study (Sapphire) and compared to a …

Metabolic Causes Of Epileptic Encephalopathy, Joe Yuezhou Yu, Phillip L. Pearl
Neurology Faculty Publications
Epileptic encephalopathy can be induced by inborn metabolic defects that may be rare individually but in aggregate represent a substantial clinical portion of child neurology. These may present with various epilepsy phenotypes including refractory neonatal seizures, early myoclonic encephalopathy, early infantile epileptic encephalopathy, infantile spasms, and generalized epilepsies which in particular include myoclonic seizures. There are varying degrees of treatability, but the outcome if untreated can often be catastrophic. The importance of early recognition cannot be overemphasized. This paper provides an overview of inborn metabolic errors associated with persistent brain disturbances due to highly active clinical or electrographic ictal activity. …
