Topological Dynamics Of Spike-Timing Dependent Plastic Neural Networks, David Stone Jan 2013

Topological Dynamics Of Spike-Timing Dependent Plastic Neural Networks, David Stone

Psychology ETDs

The effects of continual spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) on the topology of evolving neural networks were assessed. After a period of stabilization, a number of topological features were monitored periodically throughout simulations of network activity to quantify changes in network structure. Under a range of different input regimes and initial network configurations, each network maintained a robust and highly stable global structure. At the same time, a substantial set of small three-neuron subgraphs (triads) continued to undergo an array of changes and revealed a dynamic local topology. These findings suggest that on-going STDP provides an efficient means of selecting and …

Exploring The Phenomenon Of Self-Mutilation Among Adult Males In A Correctional Setting: A Quantitative And Qualitative Inquiry, Yolanda Morales Jan 2013

Exploring The Phenomenon Of Self-Mutilation Among Adult Males In A Correctional Setting: A Quantitative And Qualitative Inquiry, Yolanda Morales

Nursing ETDs

The overall aim of this mixed method inquiry was to increase understanding of self-mutilation by adult males in a correctional setting. This study explored the self-mutilating attributes such as type and motivational factors, to identify factors associated with self-mutilation among adult males in a correctional setting. Self-mutilation has classically been associated with adolescents and females; however, behind the walls of many correctional institutions, adult males are engaging in self-mutilating behavior. Self-mutilation by this population can have serious health consequences, impact the safety of the institution, and also have fiscal consequences. While this remains a serious forensic issue, there is a …

Diffuse Axonal Injury Effect On Myelinating Cells And Axons, Jennifer Alison Zalk Jan 2013

Diffuse Axonal Injury Effect On Myelinating Cells And Axons, Jennifer Alison Zalk

Theses

There is no supporting evidence whether myelin degeneration in diffuse axonal injury (DAI) of the white matter is due to death of myelinating oligodendrocytes or secondary axotomy. Cortical neurons are not able to remain healthy in culture to have their axons myelinated. Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons have been shown to be myelinated by cortical oligodendrocytes in culture. An in vitro stretch injury model was used to analyze the DRG axon pathology during and after injury. DRG myelinating Schwann cells are analyzed to demonstrate what is expected from injury to oligodendrocytes. DRG axons demonstrated a high tolerance to stretch …

Multifunctional Oxidation Electrocatalysts For Direct Alkaline Fuel Cells, Ulises Martinez Jan 2013

Multifunctional Oxidation Electrocatalysts For Direct Alkaline Fuel Cells, Ulises Martinez

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The need for the development of new technologies to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels requires the combination of different energy sources such as wind, solar, nuclear as well as new energy storage and powering devices. Amongst these new technologies fuel cells are a promising technology capable of transforming chemical energy stored in fuels into electric power at higher efficiencies than combustion processes. However, the commercialization of fuel cells has been limited due to the high costs associated with electrocatalysts needed for the corrosive environments in which proton-exchange membrane fuel cells operate. Electrocatalysts for such fuel cells are based on …

Impact Of Carbon Support Chemistry, Morphology, And Structure On Platinum Catalyst Durability For Pemfc Applications, Anant Patel

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are a promising alternative energy source, capable of being deployed as successful replacements in many stationary and mobile applications. These devices, however, lack durability, and this has become one of the limiting factors for commercialization. Many projects have focused on finding ways to improve their lifetimes, but few have tried to examine the underlying causes behind their corrosion. The goal of this project was to identify which parameters have a significant impact, both positive and negative, on PEMFC durability. To do this, three series of samples were analyzed using microscopic, spectroscopic, and electrochemical methods. Electron …

Despite advances in cancer detection and prevention, a diagnosis of metastatic disease remains a death sentence due to the fact that many cancers are either resistant to chemotherapy (conventional or targeted) or develop resistance during treatment, and residual chemoresistant cells are highly metastatic. Metastatic cancer cells resist the effects of chemotherapeutic agents by upregulating drug transporters, which efflux the drugs, and by activating proliferation and survival signaling pathways. Previously, we found that c-Abl and Arg non-receptor tyrosine kinases are activated in breast cancer, melanoma, and glioblastoma cells, and promote cancer progression. In this report, we demonstrate that the c-Abl/Arg inhibitor, …

Quantification And Propagation Of Nuclear Data Uncertainties, Michael Rising Jan 2013

Quantification And Propagation Of Nuclear Data Uncertainties, Michael Rising

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

The use of several uncertainty quantification and propagation methodologies is investigated in the context of the prompt fission neutron spectrum (PFNS) uncertainties and its impact on critical reactor assemblies. First, the first-order, linear Kalman filter is used as a nuclear data evaluation and uncertainty quantification tool combining available PFNS experimental data and a modified version of the Los Alamos (LA) model. The experimental covariance matrices, not generally given in the EXFOR database, are computed using the GMA methodology used by the IAEA to establish more appropriate correlations within each experiment. Then, using systematics relating the LA model parameters across a …

Human Inspired Pattern Recognition Via Local Invariant Features, Dominic Ron Maestas Jan 2013

Human Inspired Pattern Recognition Via Local Invariant Features, Dominic Ron Maestas

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Vision is increasingly becoming a vital element in the manufacturing industry. As complex as it already is, vision is becoming even more difficult to implement in a pattern recognition environment as it converges toward the level of what humans visualize. Relevant brain work technologies are allowing vision systems to add capability and tasks that were long reserved for humans. The ability to recognize patterns like humans do is a good goal in terms of performance metrics for manufacturing activities. To achieve this goal, we created a neural network that achieves pattern recognition analogous to the human visual cortex using high …

Synthetic Lethality Of Chk1 Inhibition Combined With P53 And/Or P21 Loss During A Dna Damage Response In Normal And Tumor Cells, Sofia Origanti, Shi-Rong Cai, A. Z. Munir, Lynn S. White, Helen Piwnica-Worms

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Cell cycle checkpoints ensure genome integrity and are frequently compromised in human cancers. A therapeutic strategy being explored takes advantage of checkpoint defects in p53-deficient tumors in order to sensitize them to DNA-damaging agents by eliminating Chk1-mediated checkpoint responses. Using mouse models, we demonstrated that p21 is a key determinant of how cells respond to the combination of DNA damage and Chk1 inhibition (combination therapy) in normal cells as well as in tumors. Loss of p21 sensitized normal cells to the combination therapy much more than did p53 loss and the enhanced lethality was partially blocked by CDK inhibition. In …

Biofilm Formation By Shewanella Oneidensis Mr-1 Towards Fundamental Understanding Of Anode Respiring Communities, Jared Roy

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Microbial fuel cells are bioelectrochemical devices where, on the anode, microorganisms oxidize complex carbon sources and reduce the electrode via complex mechanisms of extra-cellular electron transfer (EET). To date, Geobacter sulfurreducens has been identified as producing not only the largest current density but also large population density biofilms, of the known model organisms commonly used within the field. Another common model organism associated with microbial fuel cells is Shewanella oneidensis, containing multiple EET mechanisms and an apparent inability to form multi-layered biofilms in anaerobic culturing, i.e. microbial fuel cell operating conditions. In contrast to G. sulfurreducens, S. oneidensis biofilm formation …

Vibrio Cholerae Exploits Sub-Lethal Concentrations Of A Competitor-Produced Antibiotic To Avoid Toxic Interactions, Jason R. Graff, Stephanie Forschner-Dancause, Susanne Menden-Deuer, Richard A. Long, David C. Rowley

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Vibrio cholerae is a human pathogenic marine bacterium inhabiting coastal regions and is vectored into human food and water supplies via attachment to particles including detritus, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. Particle colonization by the pathogen is inhibited by an antagonistic interaction with the particle-associated Vibrionales bacterium SWAT3, a producer of the antibiotic andrimid. By analyzing the individual movement behaviors of V. cholerae exposed to a gradient of andrimid in a microfluidics device, we show that the pathogen has a concentration dependent avoidance response to sub-lethal concentrations of the pure antibiotic and to the metabolites produced by a growing colony of SWAT3-wild-type. …
