Responses Of Stress-Tolerant Corals To Ocean Acidification, Remy R. Okazaki Feb 2013

Responses Of Stress-Tolerant Corals To Ocean Acidification, Remy R. Okazaki

Open Access Dissertations

Increased atmospheric pCO2 is expected to reduce coral calcification through increased temperatures (global warming) and decreased pH (ocean acidification). Two species of corals found in Florida Bay, Solenastrea hyades and Siderastrea radians, exhibit high stress tolerance, persisting in an environment where seasonal swings in temperature and salinity often exceed tolerance limits for most other species of coral. The persistence of these two species in this marginal environment may provide insights into mechanisms of resilience to climate change stress. In other words, does tolerance to broad swings in physical environmental parameters also convey a tolerance to swings in the carbonate chemistry …

Urban Forest Justice And The Rights To Wild Foods, Medicines, And Materials In The City, Melissa R. Poe, Rebecca J. Mclain, Marla R. Emery, Patrick T. Hurley Feb 2013

Urban Forest Justice And The Rights To Wild Foods, Medicines, And Materials In The City, Melissa R. Poe, Rebecca J. Mclain, Marla R. Emery, Patrick T. Hurley

Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

Urban forests are multifunctional socio-ecological landscapes, yet some of their social benefits remain poorly understood. This paper draws on ethnographic evidence from Seattle, Washington to demonstrate that urban forests contain nontimber forest products that contribute a variety of wild foods, medicines, and materials for the well-being of urban residents. We show that gathering wild plants and fungi in urban forests is a persistent subsistence and livelihood practice that provides sociocultural and material benefits to city residents, and creates opportunities for connecting with nature and enhancing social ties. We suggest that an orientation toward human-nature interactions in cities that conceptualizes the …

Pb Distribution In Bones From The Franklin Expedition: Synchrotron X-Ray Fluorescence And Laser Ablation/Mass Spectroscopy, Ronald Martin, Steven Naftel, Sheila Macfie, Keith Jones, Andrew J. Nelson Feb 2013

Pb Distribution In Bones From The Franklin Expedition: Synchrotron X-Ray Fluorescence And Laser Ablation/Mass Spectroscopy, Ronald Martin, Steven Naftel, Sheila Macfie, Keith Jones, Andrew J. Nelson

Biology Publications

Synchrotron micro-X-ray Fluorescence has been used to map the metal distribution in selected bone fragments representative of remains associated with the Franklin expedition. In addition, laser ablation mass spectroscopy using a 25 μm diameter circular spot was employed to compare the Pb isotope distributions in small regions within the bone fragments. The X-ray Fluorescence mapping shows Pb to be widely distributed in the bone while the Pb isotope ratios obtained by laser ablation within small areas representative of bone with different Pb exchange rates do not show statistically significant differences. These results are inconsistent with the hypothesis that faulty solder …

Assessing Regional And Interspecific Variation In Threshold Responses Of Forest Breeding Birds Through Broad Scale Analyses, Yntze Van Der Hoek, Rosalind Renfrew, Lisa L. Manne Feb 2013

Assessing Regional And Interspecific Variation In Threshold Responses Of Forest Breeding Birds Through Broad Scale Analyses, Yntze Van Der Hoek, Rosalind Renfrew, Lisa L. Manne

Publications and Research

Background: Identifying persistence and extinction thresholds in species-habitat relationships is a major focal point of ecological research and conservation. However, one major concern regarding the incorporation of threshold analyses in conservation is the lack of knowledge on the generality and transferability of results across species and regions. We present a multi-region, multi-species approach of modeling threshold responses, which we use to investigate whether threshold effects are similar across species and regions.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We modeled local persistence and extinction dynamics of 25 forest-associated breeding birds based on detection/non-detection data, which were derived from repeated breeding bird atlases for the state …

Pyrvinium Pamoate Changes Alternative Splicing Of The Serotonin Receptor 2c By Influencing Its Rna Structure, Manli Shen, Stanislav Bellaousov, Michael Hiller, Pierre De La Grange, Trevor O. Creamer, Orit Malina, Ruth Sperling, David H. Mathews, Peter Stoilov, Stefan Stamm Feb 2013

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The serotonin receptor 2C plays a central role in mood and appetite control. It undergoes pre-mRNA editing as well as alternative splicing. The RNA editing suggests that the pre-mRNA forms a stable secondary structure in vivo. To identify substances that promote alternative exons inclusion, we set up a high-throughput screen and identified pyrvinium pamoate as a drug-promoting exon inclusion without editing. Circular dichroism spectroscopy indicates that pyrvinium pamoate binds directly to the pre-mRNA and changes its structure. SHAPE (selective 2'-hydroxyl acylation analysed by primer extension) assays show that part of the regulated 5'-splice site forms intramolecular base pairs that …

3-D Terahertz Synthetic-Aperture Imaging And Spectroscopy, Samuel C. Henry Feb 2013

3-D Terahertz Synthetic-Aperture Imaging And Spectroscopy, Samuel C. Henry

Dissertations and Theses

Terahertz (THz) wavelengths have attracted recent interest in multiple disciplines within engineering and science. Situated between the infrared and the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum, THz energy can propagate through non-polar materials such as clothing or packaging layers. Moreover, many chemical compounds, including explosives and many drugs, reveal strong absorption signatures in the THz range. For these reasons, THz wavelengths have great potential for non-destructive evaluation and explosive detection. Three-dimensional (3-D) reflection imaging with considerable depth resolution is also possible using pulsed THz systems. While THz imaging (especially 3-D) systems typically operate in transmission mode, reflection offers the most …

The Significance Of Sex-Linked Chromosomal Inversions In The Speciation Process Of The Simulium Arcticum Complex Of Black Flies (Diptera: Simuliidae), Gerald F. Shields Feb 2013

The Significance Of Sex-Linked Chromosomal Inversions In The Speciation Process Of The Simulium Arcticum Complex Of Black Flies (Diptera: Simuliidae), Gerald F. Shields

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

This study summarizes cytogenetic variation, particularly sex-linked chromosomal inversions which define taxa of the Simulium arcticum complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) in western Montana and portions of northern Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. Variation in polytene chromosomes was determined for nearly 15,000 larvae from 234 collections taken from 58 freshwater sites. The previously described siblings, S. apricarium, S. arcticum sensu stricto, S. brevicercum, and S. saxosum, were most numerous, while all cytotypes, with the exception of IIL-19, were found in low frequency. Additionaly, 6 new cytotypes in low frequency are described. Evidence suggests that the Y chromosome carries the testis-determining gene, and in …

TNFRSF25, a member of the TNF receptor superfamily, is a type I transmembrane protein that has a cytoplasmic death domain. TNFRSF25 is expressed primarily by T lymphocytes, including CD4+, CD8+, and NKT cells and is efficiently upregulated after T cell stimulation. The natural ligand for TNFRSF25, TL1A, is a type II transmembrane protein can be subsequently cleaved as a soluble trimeric protein by a member of metalloproteases. Our lab previously reported that TNFRSF25 stimulation using an agonist antibody, 4C12, expands pre-existing CD4+FoxP3+ Tregs in vivo. To determine how the physiological ligand differs from the antibody, we generated the soluble mouse …
