Highlights Of The Nsf Sponsored Introductory Biology Project (Ibp) Conference, William V. Glider

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

I was invited to attend the Introductory Biology Project (IBP) conference in Washington, DC this past summer. The conference was funded by an NSF grant to Gordon Uno, University of Oklahoma and hosted by AAAS. I presented a poster dealing with aspects of my collaborative research with colleagues in the UNL Center for Instructional Innovation (CII) and also acted as a representative from ABLE (Association for Biology Laboratory Education). The conference was organized around three themes: Promoting Vision and Change, Implementing Vision and Change, and Evaluating Vision and Change. An overview of the content areas discussed at the conference will …

Transcranial Electrical Stimulation Accelerates Human Sleep Homeostasis, Davide Reato, Fernando Gasca, Abhishek Datta, Marom Bikson, Lisa Marshall, Lucas C. Parra Feb 2013

Transcranial Electrical Stimulation Accelerates Human Sleep Homeostasis, Davide Reato, Fernando Gasca, Abhishek Datta, Marom Bikson, Lisa Marshall, Lucas C. Parra

Publications and Research

The sleeping brain exhibits characteristic slow-wave activity which decays over the course of the night. This decay is thought to result from homeostatic synaptic downscaling. Transcranial electrical stimulation can entrain slow-wave oscillations (SWO) in the human electro-encephalogram (EEG). A computational model of the underlying mechanism predicts that firing rates are predominantly increased during stimulation. Assuming that synaptic homeostasis is driven by average firing rates, we expected an acceleration of synaptic downscaling during stimulation, which is compensated by a reduced drive after stimulation. We show that 25 minutes of transcranial electrical stimulation, as predicted, reduced the decay of SWO in the …

Facing Continual Challenges, Oysters Need Our Help, Linda Walters

UCF Forum

Most of us either love to eat oysters or think that pond scum might actually taste better. While I can’t stomach them raw, roasted oysters with cheese, bacon and wine are a delightful treat after a hard day at work.

Glucosensing, Hypoglycemia, And The Brain, Candace Reno Feb 2013

Glucosensing, Hypoglycemia, And The Brain, Candace Reno

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Glucose homeostasis can be peripherally and centrally mediated. Within the periphery, GLUT4 in muscle and adipose tissue is required for normal glucose homeostasis and disruption of GLUT4 translocation in these tissues leads to glucose intolerance and insulin resistance, hallmarks of Type 2 diabetes. Within the brain, specialized glucose sensing neurons regulate whole body glucose homeostasis. Unlike GLUT4's role in the periphery, brain GLUT4 regulation of glucose tolerance is not well defined. Understanding how brain glucose sensing, mediated by GLUT4, regulates glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity will aid in the development of treatment strategies to protect against the pathogenesis of diabetes. …

Carbothermal Synthesis Of Titanium Oxycarbide As Electrocatalyst Support With High Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity, Kan Huang, Yunfeng Li, Yangchuan Xing Feb 2013

Carbothermal Synthesis Of Titanium Oxycarbide As Electrocatalyst Support With High Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity, Kan Huang, Yunfeng Li, Yangchuan Xing

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Carbothermal reduction of semiconducting TiO2 into highly conductive titanium oxycarbide (TiOxCy) was investigated. The thermally produced uniform carbon layer on TiO2 (Degussa P25) protects the TiO2 nanoparticles from sintering and, at the same time, supplies the carbon source for doping TiO2 with carbon. At low temperatures (e.g., 700 °C), carbon only substitutes part of the oxide and distorts the TiO2 lattice to form TiO2-xCx with only substitutional carbon. When the carbon-doped TiO2 is annealed at a higher temperature (1100 °C), x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that TiOxCy, a solid …

Identification Of Snps Associated With Variola Virus Virulence, Anne Gatewood Hoen, Shea N. Gardner, Jason H. Moore Feb 2013

Identification Of Snps Associated With Variola Virus Virulence, Anne Gatewood Hoen, Shea N. Gardner, Jason H. Moore

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Decades after the eradication of smallpox, its etiological agent, variola virus (VARV), remains a threat as a potential bioweapon. Outbreaks of smallpox around the time of the global eradication effort exhibited variable case fatality rates (CFRs), likely attributable in part to complex viral genetic determinants of smallpox virulence. We aimed to identify genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with CFR. We evaluated unadjusted and outbreak geographic location-adjusted models of single SNPs and two- and three-way interactions between SNPs. Findings: Using the data mining approach multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR), we identified five VARV SNPs in models significantly associated with CFR. The …

Globalization And Environmental Sustainability: An Analysis Of The Impact Of Globalization Using The Natural Step Framework, Joyce S. Osland, K. Kathy Dhanda, Kristi Jane Yuthas

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Globalization is becoming an increasingly controversial topic as shown by recent protests around the world. To date, however, U.S. business scholars have seldom questioned the basic assumptions of globalization, opting instead to describe the phenomena and focus on best practices. The purpose of this literature review is to broaden the boundaries of the debate on globalization and increase our understanding of its impact beyond the economic sphere into the realm of environmental sustainability. The Natural Step framework is used to organize an analysis of the existing empirical research. It describes four basic system conditions required for sustainability: 1) substances from …

Neutering Dogs: Effects On Joint Disorders And Cancers In Golden Retrievers, Gretel Torres De La Riva, Benjamin L. Hart, Thomas B. Farver, Anita M. Oberbauer, Locksley L. Mcv Messam, Neil H. Willits, Lynette A. Hart

Endocrinology Collection

In contrast to European countries, the overwhelming majority of dogs in the U.S. are neutered (including spaying), usually done before one year of age. Given the importance of gonadal hormones in growth and development, this cultural contrast invites an analysis of the multiple organ systems that may be adversely affected by neutering. Using a single breed-specific dataset, the objective was to examine the variables of gender and age at the time of neutering versus leaving dogs gonadally intact, on all diseases occurring with sufficient frequency for statistical analyses. Given its popularity and vulnerability to various cancers and joint disorders, the …
