End-Point Variability Is Not Noise In Saccade Adaptation, James P. Herman, C. Phillip Cloud, Josh Wallman
End-Point Variability Is Not Noise In Saccade Adaptation, James P. Herman, C. Phillip Cloud, Josh Wallman
Publications and Research
When each of many saccades is made to overshoot its target, amplitude gradually decreases in a form of motor learning called saccade adaptation. Overshoot is induced experimentally by a secondary, backwards intrasaccadic target step (ISS) triggered by the primary saccade. Surprisingly, however, no study has compared the effectiveness of different sizes of ISS in driving adaptation by systematically varying ISS amplitude across different sessions. Additionally, very few studies have examined the feasibility of adaptation with relatively small ISSs. In order to best understand saccade adaptation at a fundamental level, we addressed these two points in an experiment using a range …

Molecular Analysis Of The Localization And Function Of Caspase-Like Proteins In Dictyostelium Discoideum And The Parasitic Protozoan Acanthamoeba Castellanii, Entsar Jabbar Saheb Kano
Theses and Dissertations
Two novel families of caspase-like proteins, metacaspases and paracaspases, have been discovered but have remained poorly characterized. Metacaspase type-1 (Acmcp) has been identified in Acanthamoeba castellanii , which is an opportunistic protozoan parasite that causes several diseases in humans. On the other hand, paracaspase (Ddpcp) has been found in the protozoan Dictyostelium discoideum . D. discoideum is well-researched model organism that is appropriate for studying these caspase-like proteins. In this study, we investigated the localization and molecular function of metacaspase and paracaspase proteins by over-expressing them in D. discoideum . Separate cell lines over-expressing a GFP-tagged version of the full …
Glycoconjugates Prevent Bacterial Dissemination And Cellular Death During B. Cereus/ B. Anthracis Infection, Mohamed Hassen Lahiani
Glycoconjugates Prevent Bacterial Dissemination And Cellular Death During B. Cereus/ B. Anthracis Infection, Mohamed Hassen Lahiani
Theses and Dissertations
Bacillus cereus group species including Bacillus cereus and Bacillus anthracis produce highly resistant spores. Dormant spores can survive for long period in harsh environmental conditions. Spores are engulfed by macrophages. Mammalian macrophages are the first line defenders immune cells through its phagocytic activity. Glycoconjugates (GCs) are a family of synthetic carbohydrates that possesses numerous bactericidal and immunodulatory properties. In my study, I used a multivariate approach to study the effects of GCs on B. cereus and B. anthracis Sterne phagocytosis. During in vitro study, I found that GC1 and GC3 were the best candidates that inhibited B. cereus and B. …
Rapid Identification Of Bacteria Using Mass Spectrometry And Spectral Pattern Recognition, Pierre Alusta
Rapid Identification Of Bacteria Using Mass Spectrometry And Spectral Pattern Recognition, Pierre Alusta
Theses and Dissertations
Rapid Identification of Bacteria Using Mass Spectrometry and Spectral Pattern Recognition A novel atmospheric pressure ionization process, namely Direct Impact Ionization (DII), is used to ionize bacteria. Electric discharges impinge on an indentation from underneath a stainless steel wire mesh holding a thin dried film of whole bacterial cells, the analyte. The latter is immersed in (350 oC) hot He gas flow. Biomolecular ions as heavy as 560 m/z are generated. Mass spectra are obtained and extracted with a high degree of reproducibility. A bioinformatic methodology for effective representation of spectral data that incorporates noise reduction was developed for this …

Relationship Between The Quality Of Educational Facilities, School Climate, And School Safety Of High School Tenth Graders In The United States, Darnell Bell
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to understand the relationships among facility conditions, school climate, and school safety of high school tenth graders in the United States. Previous research on the quality of educational facilities influence on student achievement has varied. Recent research has suggested that the quality of educational facilities may have an influence on student achievement. If a relationship exists between the quality of educational facilities and student achievement, information and insight can be provided to school districts, legislatures and school leaders for creating budgets for facilities plans. Administrators and Students Questionnaires, and the Facilities Checklist of the …

Green Mind Gray Yard: Micro Scale Assessment Of Ecosystem Services, Erin Jolene Kirkpatrick
Green Mind Gray Yard: Micro Scale Assessment Of Ecosystem Services, Erin Jolene Kirkpatrick
Dissertations and Theses
There is a spatial mismatch between the size of the area where people are living and the extent of land needed to ecologically support developed areas. More people are living in urban areas than any time in history, and the resources need to support cities have had to expand to try and meet the demands of increasing urban populations. However, areas of opportunity exist for urban areas to begin to positively contribute towards the available resources in a region. Because a large portion of urban areas is within private control, gaining a baseline understanding of how residents interact with ecosystem …
Aids: An Overview, Loretta Mclaughlin
Aids: An Overview, Loretta Mclaughlin
New England Journal of Public Policy
"We stand nakedly in front of a very serious pandemic, as mortal as any pandemic there ever has been," said Halfdan Mahler, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO). "I don't know of any greater killer than AIDS, not to speak of its psychological, social and economic maiming. Everything is getting worse and worse with AIDS and all of us have been underestimating it, and I in particular. We're running scared. I cannot imagine a worse health problem in this century." When asked to compare AIDS to other epidemics, such as smallpox, that have infected and killed over the course …
Enhanced Surveillance On Food-Borne Disease Outbreaks: Dynamics Of Cross-Contamination In Biocidal Wash Procedure, Daniel Munther, Jianhong Wu
Enhanced Surveillance On Food-Borne Disease Outbreaks: Dynamics Of Cross-Contamination In Biocidal Wash Procedure, Daniel Munther, Jianhong Wu
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Understanding the geographic and temporal spread of food-borne diseases associated with fresh produce is crucial for informing adequate surveillance and control. As a first step towards this goal, we develop and analyze a novel three stage model at the processing/sanitization juncture in the fresh produce supply chain. The key feature of our model is its ability to describe the dynamics of cross-contamination during commercial wash procedures. In general, we quantify the degree of cross-contamination in terms of model parameters. Applying these results in the case of Escherichia coli O157:H7 contamination of fresh-cut romaine lettuce, we identify the mean wash time …
Use Of Self-Assembled Monolayers To Tailor Surface Properties: From Lubrication To Neuronal Development, Natalie Ann Lafranzo
Use Of Self-Assembled Monolayers To Tailor Surface Properties: From Lubrication To Neuronal Development, Natalie Ann Lafranzo
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The subsequent work describes advances in modifying the chemical properties of various substrates to tailor the surface properties for specific applications. This is achieved by making use of a molecular assembly known as self-assembled monolayers, or SAMs. SAMs are composed of tightly packed organic molecules that form a well-ordered structure on a substrate. Typically, the head group of the monomer is covalently anchored to the substrate, and monolayer order and self-assembly is achieved through van der Waals interactions between the long alkyl chains of the monomer's tail group. Monolayers containing head groups consisting of thiols, siloxanes, and phosphonates have been …
Grinding Decline In Springfield: Is The Finance Control Board The Answer?, Robert Forrant
Grinding Decline In Springfield: Is The Finance Control Board The Answer?, Robert Forrant
New England Journal of Public Policy
Springfield, Massachusetts, the Bay State’s third largest city, suffered staggering manufacturing job loss over the last thirty years of the twentieth century. In 2004, the financial impact of job loss, coupled with dubious fiscal management, plunged the city into near bankruptcy. In response, state government passed legislation appointing a Finance Control Board to manage city business. Wage freezes for City workers were continued and cuts in numerous essential services occurred to deal with the debt. But the question remains, can a Control Board approach grow a large stock of well-paying jobs — large enough to grow the city’s and the …

Using Bayesian Networks To Discover Relations Between Genes, Environment, And Disease, Chengwei Su, Angeline Andrew, Margaret R. Karagas, Mark E. Borsuk
Using Bayesian Networks To Discover Relations Between Genes, Environment, And Disease, Chengwei Su, Angeline Andrew, Margaret R. Karagas, Mark E. Borsuk
Dartmouth Scholarship
We review the applicability of Bayesian networks (BNs) for discovering relations between genes, environment, and disease. By translating probabilistic dependencies among variables into graphical models and vice versa, BNs provide a comprehensible and modular framework for representing complex systems. We first describe the Bayesian network approach and its applicability to understanding the genetic and environmental basis of disease. We then describe a variety of algorithms for learning the structure of a network from observational data. Because of their relevance to real-world applications, the topics of missing data and causal interpretation are emphasized. The BN approach is then exemplified through application …

Publications and Research
Previous studies proposed that myosin-Va regulates apoptosis by sequestering pro-apoptotic Bmf to the actin cytoskeleton through dynein light chain-2 (DLC2). Adhesion loss or other cytoskeletal perturbations would unleash Bmf, allowing it to bind and inhibit pro-survival Bcl2 proteins. Here, we demonstrated that over expression of a myosin-Va medial tail fragment (MVaf) harboring the binding site for DLC2 dramatically decreased melanoma cell viability. Morphological and molecular changes, including surface blebbing, mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization, cytochrome-c and Smac release, as well as caspase-9/-3 activation and DNA fragmentation indicated that melanoma cells died of apoptosis. Immobilized MVaf interacted directly with DLCs, but complexed …

Fish Assemblages Associated With Natural And Anthropogenically-Modified Habitats In A Marine Embayment: Comparison Of Baited Videos And Opera-House Traps, Corey B. Wakefield, Paul Lewis, Teresa B. Coutts, David V. Fairclough, Timothy J. Langlois
Fisheries Research Articles
Marine embayments and estuaries play an important role in the ecology and life history of many fish species. Cockburn Sound is one of a relative paucity of marine embayments on the west coast of Australia. Its sheltered waters and close proximity to a capital city have resulted in anthropogenic intrusion and extensive seascape modification. This study aimed to compare the sampling efficiencies of baited videos and fish traps in determining the relative abundance and diversity of temperate demersal fish species associated with naturally occurring (seagrass, limestone outcrops and soft sediment) and modified (rockwall and dredge channel) habitats in Cockburn Sound. …
