Development Of A Method For The Measurement And Analyses Of The Micro-Scale Mechanical Response Of The Growth Plate With Fluorescent Microscopy, Thien-Chuong Nguyen Phung Apr 2013

Development Of A Method For The Measurement And Analyses Of The Micro-Scale Mechanical Response Of The Growth Plate With Fluorescent Microscopy, Thien-Chuong Nguyen Phung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The growth plate is a layer of hyaline cartilage between the epiphysis and diaphysis of long bones and is responsible for the longitudinal growth of bone. Like the remodeling of mature bones, bone growth is influenced by its surrounding environment, but the underlying mechanisms of this process are less understood, although there appears to be a link between mechanical loading and bone growth. For example, the Hueter-Volkmann law states that growth rate decreases due to excessive compressive loading. Multiple mechanisms have been proposed to lead to growth retardation in the case of excessive compression such as vascular obstruction, alterations in …

The study also examined the possible influence of students' age, grade level (ninth-through-twelfth grade) and over-age for grade as related to their perceptions of readiness for online learning. The participants consisted of 264 at-risk high school students from a high minority, economically impoverished community. This quantitative study used data from the Online Readiness Assessment (ORA) and school …

Investigating The Relations Between Posttraumtic Stress Disorder Symptom Clusters And Chronic Pain, Amanda Michelle Rach Apr 2013

Investigating The Relations Between Posttraumtic Stress Disorder Symptom Clusters And Chronic Pain, Amanda Michelle Rach

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Comorbidity rates of PTSD and chronic pain in returning veterans range between 66% and 80%. To date, only a single study conducted with Vietnam veterans years after the trauma exposure has explored the unique relations between PTSD symptoms and chronic pain. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the relation between unidimensional PTSD symptom clusters and chronic pain indices in returning OIF/OEF/OND veterans. PTSD symptom clusters did not differentiate pain positive from pain negative veterans and symptom clusters were also not related to veteran report of pain severity or pain interference. Depression, as a covariate, was related to pain …

The Birth Of The World: An Exploration In Husserl's Genetic Phenomenology, Matt Bower Apr 2013

The Birth Of The World: An Exploration In Husserl's Genetic Phenomenology, Matt Bower

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this dissertation I provide an extensive interpretation of Husserl’s genetic phenomenology of the “world-horizon,” the sui generis form of intentionality that gives us a schematic awareness of what lies beyond our momentary present experience. Chapter 2 begins with an account of Husserl’s static analyses, taking advantage of recently published manuscripts in which Husserl uses the tools of his eidetic method to ground his concept of the world-horizon. What we find is a minimal conception of the world-horizon as a spatiotemporal form for experience. The chapter ends with a look at how this minimal conception is related to practical and …

Art And Becoming-Animal: Reconceptualizing The Animal Imagery In Dorothea Tanning's Post-1955 Paintings, Samantha Karam Apr 2013

Art And Becoming-Animal: Reconceptualizing The Animal Imagery In Dorothea Tanning's Post-1955 Paintings, Samantha Karam

Theses and Dissertations

In 1955, American artist Dorothea Tanning abandoned her figurative Surrealist renderings of dream-like scenarios in favor of a complexly abstract and fragmented style of painting. With few exceptions, the ways in which Tanning’s later works function independently of her earlier paintings tends to be downplayed in the scholarship on her oeuvre. Equally sparse is the scholarship on Tanning’s dog imagery, which pervades her oeuvre but becomes most apparent in her later phase. This thesis seeks to shift attention toward Tanning’s later abstract paintings; it also seeks to fill the gap in scholarship on Tanning’s dogs. Specifically, through the study of …

The Normative Dimensions Of Health Disparities, Andrew Ward, Pamela Jo Johnson, Mollie O'Brien Apr 2013

The Normative Dimensions Of Health Disparities, Andrew Ward, Pamela Jo Johnson, Mollie O'Brien

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Understanding what conditions must be satisfied for a health inequality to be a health inequity (disparity) is crucial for health policy makers. The failure to understand what constitutes a health inequity, and confusing health inequalities with health inequities threatens the successful creation of health policies by diverting needed attention and resources away from addressing health inequalities that are health inequities. More generally, the failure threatens to undercut our ability to tell what research is relevant to the creation of health policies that aim to mitigate or eliminate health inequities. With this in mind, the principal aim of the present paper …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

This study examines the relationship between racial/ethnic discrimination in medical settings, distrust in conventional medicine, and attitudes toward complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among a racially/ethnically diverse sample. We also investigate how this relationship differs by nativity. Data are from a 2008 statewide stratified sample of publicly insured adults in Minnesota (N=2,194). Discrimination was measured as self-reported unfair treatment in medical settings due to race, ethnicity, and/or nationality. Outcomes are trust in conventional providers/medicine and attitudes toward CAM modalities. Discrimination in medical settings was positively associated with 1) distrust in conventional providers and 2) favorable attitudes toward CAM. Foreign-born …

The Principle Of Resilience, Lia Helena Monteiro De Lima Demange Apr 2013

The Principle Of Resilience, Lia Helena Monteiro De Lima Demange

Pace Environmental Law Review

This article seeks to develop the role law could play in contributing to the achievement of ecosystem resilience. Therefore, adopting Aldo Leopold’s view of conservation, by which the first step should be to understand nature, this article will begin with a brief explanation of the ecological background to the concept of ecosystem resilience. Next, the article will consider Aldo Leopold’s land ethic in order to discuss the values we should look for when implementing conservation for resilience. Regarding those values and concepts, the following part of the article will be dedicated to consolidating and contextualizing the legal principle.

In order …

The Legal Profession’S Critical Role In Systems-Level Bioenergy Decision-Making, Jody M. Endres Apr 2013

The Legal Profession’S Critical Role In Systems-Level Bioenergy Decision-Making, Jody M. Endres

Pace Environmental Law Review

Law as a discipline thus must seek greater prominence in the raging debates on the efficacy of modeling as a bioenergy policy driver. To ultimately determine law’s proper role, Part II of my article first assesses the universe of key economic and lifecycle models used in current bioenergy policy initiatives, as well as the models deployed in general environmental decision-making that could affect the siting and operation of biomass cropping and bioenergy facilities. Part III then dissects these models to uncover the multiple ways in which law can improve models both structurally and procedurally to achieve greater accuracy. The conclusion …

International Deployment Of Microbial Pest Control Agents: Falling Between The Cracks Of The Convention On Biological Diversity And The Cartagena Biosafety Protocol?, Guy R. Knudsen Apr 2013

International Deployment Of Microbial Pest Control Agents: Falling Between The Cracks Of The Convention On Biological Diversity And The Cartagena Biosafety Protocol?, Guy R. Knudsen

Pace Environmental Law Review

This paper considers one tangled web of conflicting developments. It involves the popular desire to replace chemical pesticides with more “natural” biological control strategies, plus a slowly emerging awareness of a less benign side to microbial pest control agents, based on their potential invasiveness and sometimes striking similarities to agents of bioterrorism and biological warfare. This desire, however, is overshadowed by concerns about the environmental release of genetically engineered organisms. I argue that as some of the concerns about ecological diversity, as captured by the Convention on Biodiversity, were channeled into the subsequent Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention …

The Case For An Information-Forcing Regulatory Definition Of “Nanomaterials”, David A. Dana Apr 2013

The Case For An Information-Forcing Regulatory Definition Of “Nanomaterials”, David A. Dana

Pace Environmental Law Review

This Article reviews regulatory attempts to define nanomaterials to date, including the European Commission’s definition. It then sets forth and explains why agencies should adopt what I am calling an information-forcing definition of nanomaterials. Nanomaterials implicate the same informational problem as many other substances or practices that are the subject of political and legal debate: that is, we (the public) know enough to know that there are some risks but not enough to specify and assess those risks. We know risks are posed by some kinds of small-scale materials in some contexts, but not enough is known to define the …
