Identification Of Gene Resistance To Avian Influenza Virus (Mx Gene) Among Wild Waterbirds, Dewi Elfidasari, Dedy Duryadi Solihin, Retno Damayanti Soejoedono, Sri Murtini
Makara Journal of Science
The Mx gene is an antiviral gene used to determine the resistance or the susceptibility to different types of viruses, including the Avian Influenza (AI) virus subtype H5N1. The AI virus subtype H5N1 infection in chickens causes Mx gene polymorphism. The Mx+ gene shows resistant to the AI virus subtype H5N1, whereas the Mxgene shows signs of susceptible. The objective of this research was to detect the Mx gene in wild aquatic birds using the Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method with the primer pairs F2 and NE-R2/R and the RsaI restriction enzyme. DNA samples were obtained from …

The Garapan river mouth forms part of the Tanjung Pasir coastal area. This region receives materials not only from coastal waters but also from domestic sewage and industrial wastewater that contains heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, and Zn. On the contrary, the Cibungur river mouth in the different coastal area, receives relatively lower amounts of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater. The objective of this study was to determine the Cu, Pb, and Zn content in the coastal sediment as well as the levels of A.indica and their relationship with water quality parameters. Samples were collected from four stations located …
Understanding Molecular Interactions: Application Of Hint-Based Tools In The Structural Modeling Of Novel Anticancer And Antiviral Targets, And In Protein-Protein Docking, Hardik Parikh
Theses and Dissertations
Computationally driven drug design/discovery efforts generally rely on accurate assessment of the forces that guide the molecular recognition process. HINT (Hydropathic INTeraction) is a natural force field, derived from experimentally determined partition coefficients that quantifies all non-bonded interactions in the biological environment, including hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, and the energy of desolvation. The overall goal of this work is to apply the HINT-based atomic level description of molecular systems to biologically important proteins, to better understand their biochemistry – a key step in exploiting them for therapeutic purposes. This dissertation discusses the results of three diverse projects: i) …

Molecular Dynamic Analysis Of Electrostatics Of Single-Stranded Dna With A Prospective Towards Single Molecule Sequencing, Mohammad Jomah I. Abu Saude
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Single molecule DNA sequencing, commonly referred as the third generation sequencing, requires new approaches to identify nucleotide bases. Based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigate a prospective direct electronic sequencing approach of nucleotides using the electrostatics of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). To study the intrinsic electrostatic of ssDNA, electrostatic potentials have been calculated by solving the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation using visual molecular dynamics (VMD) for 25 base pair (bp) of polymers. The results show that the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) differs for various bases within 3 nm from the center of the sugar backbone, with suitably differentiable variations at 1.4 …

"Simply Not Enough": Representations Of Youing Women In Young Adult Literature And The Marginalization Of Ya Literature As A Whole., Jessica Nicole Mitchell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study investigated the gender stereotypes that may or may not have been present in the portrayal of four female protagonists from the first novels of four different YA series and why young adult literature is such a marginalized literary genre. Bella Swan from Stephenie Meyer's Twilight, Clarissa Fray from Cassandra Claire's City of Bones, Katniss Everdeen from Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, and Beatrice Prior from Veronica Roth's Divergent were analyzed in order to see which protagonists embodied gender stereotypes and which were gender neutral. Texts and articles were also consulted to discover why, after its monumental growth and …

Defining The Functions Of A Conserved Hydrophobic Domain In The Arf Tumor Suppressor, Aymen Hariz
Defining The Functions Of A Conserved Hydrophobic Domain In The Arf Tumor Suppressor, Aymen Hariz
Theses and Dissertations
The INK4A-ARF locus encodes two tumor suppressors; p16 and p19Arf, both of which restrain cell growth by regulating the functions of Retinoblastoma (Rb) and p53 respectively. Throughout development, p19Arf is kept at minimal levels, but under conditions of oncogenic stress, p19Arf expression is induced and its tumor suppressive activities are mediated through the stabilization of p53 or in a p53-independent manner. Introducing a point mutation (L46D) into the conserved hydrophobic domain (37-51) in p19Arf annulled ARF/CtBP2 interaction and mediated cell survival by rendering cells irresponsive to apoptosis. In vivo analysis on the percentage of lymphoma free survivals in ARFL46D/L46D mice …

The Activation, Receptor Complexing And Endogenous Regulation Of The Type-I Interferon Response As It Pertains To Innate Immunity, James D. Marion Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
To defend against pathogen challenge, multi-cellular organisms mount an immune response that recognizes, sequesters and eradicates invading infectious agents. Critical to this safeguard is the receptor-mediated detection of pathogens. Pathogen recognition then initiates a variety of signaling cascades that lead to the modulation of genes orchestrating an immune response. Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3), a transmembrane receptor found in endosomes, is vital to the innate immune response against viruses. Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) stimulation of TLR3 initiates a signaling cascade that leads to the production of type-I interferons and proinflammatory cytokines necessary to trigger the protective defenses of the immune system. Critical …

Understanding the processes controlling the transfer and chemical composition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in freshwater systems is crucial to understanding the carbon cycle and the effects of DOC on water quality. Previous studies have identified watershed‐scale controls on bulk DOC flux and concentration among small basins but fewer studies have explored controls among large basins or simultaneously considered the chemical composition of DOC. Because the chemical character of DOC drives riverine biogeochemical processes such as metabolism and photodegradation, accounting for chemical character in watershed‐scale studies will improve the way bulk DOC variability in rivers is interpreted. We analyzed DOC …

The emergence of lithic technology by ∼2.6 million years ago (Ma) is often interpreted as a correlate of increasingly recurrent hominin acquisition and consumption of animal remains. Associated faunal evidence, however, is poorly preserved prior to ∼1.8 Ma, limiting our understanding of early archaeological (Oldowan) hominin carnivory. Here, we detail three large well-preserved zooarchaeological assemblages from Kanjera South, Kenya. The assemblages date to ∼2.0 Ma, pre-dating all previously published archaeofaunas of appreciable size. At Kanjera, there is clear evidence that Oldowan hominins acquired and processed numerous, relatively complete, small ungulate carcasses. Moreover, they had at least occasional access to the …

There Is A Sob In There Somewhere, Antonia Macdonald
There Is A Sob In There Somewhere, Antonia Macdonald
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
This essay examines the loud resonance of aging as a worrisome concern in The Prodigal, a poetic autobiography which its creator, Derek Walcott, has described as “an old man’s book/whenever you write it, whenever it comes out” (8). The essay argues that this long poem is both personal and performative. In The Prodigal, Walcott intimately explores the aging process and the biological deterioration it engenders as bringing him closer to death; at the same time he becomes the synecdoche for the aging artist who capitulates to diminished social and cultural relevance.

Breast cancer (BC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Aggressive basal-subtype BCs contribute disproportionally to the number of cancer deaths and have no molecular targeted therapies currently available. Limb-Bud and Heart (LBH) is a novel transcription co-factor in the WNT pathway with hither-to unknown physiological function and is aberrantly overexpressed in poorly differentiated basal-subtype BCs. Here we show that in normal mammary epithelium of postnatal mice, LBH is predominantly expressed in the mammary stem cell (MaSC)-enriched basal cell subpopulation. Upon conditional inactivation of LBH function, mice exhibited a pronounced delay in pubertal mammary gland outgrowth, reduced …

The Anchor: 2013
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The recent invasion of the red alga Heterosiphonia japonica in the western North Atlantic Ocean has provided a unique opportunity to study invasion dynamics across a biogeographical barrier. Native to the western North Pacific Ocean, initial collections in 2007 and 2009 restricted the western North Atlantic range of this invader to Rhode Island, USA. However, through subtidal community surveys, we document the presence of Heterosiphonia in coastal waters from Maine to New York, USA, a distance of more than 700 km. This geographical distribution spans a well-known biogeographical barrier at Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Despite significant differences in subtidal community structure …

Serine Proteolytic Pathway Activation Reveals An Expanded Ensemble Of Wound Response Genes In Drosophila, Rachel A. Patterson, Michelle T. Juarez, Anita Hermann, Roman Sasik, Gary Hardiman, William Mcginnis
Publications and Research
After injury to the animal epidermis, a variety of genes are transcriptionally activated in nearby cells to regenerate the missing cells and facilitate barrier repair. The range and types of diffusible wound signals that are produced by damaged epidermis and function to activate repair genes during epidermal regeneration remains a subject of very active study in many animals. In Drosophila embryos, we have discovered that serine protease function is locally activated around wound sites, and is also required for localized activation of epidermal repair genes. The serine protease trypsin is sufficient to induce a striking global epidermal wound response without …
