The Least Restrictive Environment Clause Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act And Institutional Ableism: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Laura O'Laughlin May 2013

The Least Restrictive Environment Clause Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act And Institutional Ableism: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Laura O'Laughlin

All Dissertations

This study focused on terms anchored in special education and associated stigma of disability in schools. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ensured the right to education in US public school systems for students with disabilities. An associated term asserted that children with disabilities must be educated in the least restrictive environment (LRE). Yet, IDEA did not address the institutional or social stigma arising in the wake of labeling students as disabled. The stigma, a result of ableism, promotes a premise of normalcy and marginalizes students with disabilities. This study was a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of the LRE clause. …

Integrating Biomechanics And Cell Physiology To Understanding Ivd Nutrition And Cell Homeostasis, Yongren Wu May 2013

Integrating Biomechanics And Cell Physiology To Understanding Ivd Nutrition And Cell Homeostasis, Yongren Wu

All Dissertations

Back pain associated with degeneration of the intervertebral disc (IVD) is a major public health problem in Western industrialized societies. Degeneration of the IVD changes the osmotic and nutrient environment in the extracellular matrix (ECM) which affects cell behaviors, including: cell proliferation, cell energy metabolism, and matrix synthesis. In addition, a thin layer of hyaline cartilaginous end-plate (CEP) at the superior/inferior disc-vertebral interface was found to play an important role in nutrient supply as well as load distribution in the IVD. Therefore, our general hypothesis is that the CEP regulates the ECM osmotic and nutrient environment which further affects IVD …

Functional Morphology And Performance Of Ecological Systems With Extreme Pressures: Waterfall Climbing And Predator-Prey Interaction In Amphidromous Gobioid Fishes, Takashi Maie May 2013

Functional Morphology And Performance Of Ecological Systems With Extreme Pressures: Waterfall Climbing And Predator-Prey Interaction In Amphidromous Gobioid Fishes, Takashi Maie

All Dissertations

Understanding the functional capacity and performance of organisms provides a strong foundation for recognizing the forces that are responsible for their form, and how they might adapt to variable or changing environmental conditions. Amphidromous stream goby fishes live in a habitat subject to two potentially extreme selective pressures: (1) predation on juvenile fish returning to freshwater from the ocean, and (2) the demand to climb waterfalls to reach adult breeding habitats. Recognizing these selection pressures, I present studies evaluating (1) the mechanisms underlying the functional capacity for adhesive performance, and (2) the risk that predation imposes on amphidromous gobies. Specifically, …

Adaptive Model Based Combustion Phasing Control For Multi Fuel Spark Ignition Engines, Baitao Xiao May 2013

Adaptive Model Based Combustion Phasing Control For Multi Fuel Spark Ignition Engines, Baitao Xiao

All Dissertations

This research describes a physics-based control-oriented feed-forward model, combined with cylinder pressure feedback, to regulate combustion phasing in a spark-ignition engine operating on an unknown mix of fuels. This research may help enable internal combustion engines that are capable of on-the-fly adaptation to a wide range of fuels. These engines could; (1) facilitate a reduction in bio-fuel processing, (2) encourage locally-appropriate bio-fuels to reduce transportation, (3) allow new fuel formulations to enter the market with minimal infrastructure, and (4) enable engine adaptation to pump-to-pump fuel variations. These outcomes will help make bio-fuels cost-competitive with other transportation fuels, lessen dependence on …

Early Skeletal Morphogenesis: The Role Of Pharyngeal Endoderm Derived Signaling During Specification Of Craniofacial Skeleton And Interplay Of Mechanical Forces And Molecular Signaling During Skeletal Condensation, Poulomi Ray May 2013

Early Skeletal Morphogenesis: The Role Of Pharyngeal Endoderm Derived Signaling During Specification Of Craniofacial Skeleton And Interplay Of Mechanical Forces And Molecular Signaling During Skeletal Condensation, Poulomi Ray

All Dissertations

This study examines the fundamental principles governing the early
stages of skeletal morphogenesis. I specifically investigate the specification of mesenchymal progenitor cells to a skeletal fate. Using explant culture system, I determine that the pharyngeal endoderm was sufficient, but not necessary for specifying pre-chondrogenic identity. FGF signaling is both sufficient and required for specification of Sox9 expression and specification of prechondrogenic identity, as demonstrated by the addition of recombinant FGF protein or the FGF receptor inhibitor (SU5402) to explanted tissue, respectively. However, FGF signaling cannot maintain Sox9 expression or initiate the chondrogenic program as indicated by the absence of Col2a1 …

Spatial Relationship Between The Trichloroethylene Degrading Bacteria Dehalococcoides Sp., Sulfate Reducers And Archaea During Reductive Dechlorination, Pujya Wagle Gautam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Trichloroethylene (TCE) released to the environment is of great concern due to its toxicity and carcinogencity. The microorganisms involved in bioremediation of TCE such as methanogens (organisms within the domain Archaea), sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and Dehalococcoides sp. (DHC) are of particular interest in this study. Three different types of bench scale reactors were constructed to model different aquifer types such as sandy, silty and fractured bedrock aquifers (hereafter type 1, 2 or 3 reactors, respectively). This study evaluated the effect of TCE concentration in different types of reactors on the distribution of selected microorganisms with distance from the source …

Geographic Variation Of Song Within And Between Subspecies Of The Mangrove Warbler (Setophaga Petechia Castaneiceps And S. P. Rhizophorae), Taryn Tuncer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bird song characteristics are unique for each species, but songs are not identical among con-specific individuals and variations may occur at different geographic scales throughout a species distribution. Geographic song variation is common in many species, particularly in Passerines due to their song-learning behavior. Among Wood Warblers (Fam. Paruliade), The Yellow Warbler ( Setophaga petechia) is one of the most widespread and geographically diverse species. It is comprised by three groups of several subspecies which represent a great variety on morphological traits, mainly on plumage coloration. Variations on behavioral traits, such as songs, have also been found in this species. …

Genetic Mapping And Mechanism Of Action Of Rat Mammary Carcinoma Susceptibility Quantitative Trait Locus Mcs1b., Aaron D. Dendekker May 2013

Genetic Mapping And Mechanism Of Action Of Rat Mammary Carcinoma Susceptibility Quantitative Trait Locus Mcs1b., Aaron D. Dendekker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer is a complex disease that involves genetic, epigenetic, and environmental components. High and moderate penetrant genes have been identified that affect risk to developing breast cancer; however, these risk alleles are present in a small percentage of breast cancer cases. Low penetrant modifier genes have risk-associated alleles that are common in the population. Although these genes have lower penetrance, it is expected that the majority of genetic risk to developing breast cancer is controlled by common genetic variation. Studying mechanisms of common genetic variants on breast cancer risk is difficult due to their small individual effects and overlapping …

Cardiovascular Disease Among Diabetic Women With Bilateral Oophorectomy., Duke Appiah May 2013

Cardiovascular Disease Among Diabetic Women With Bilateral Oophorectomy., Duke Appiah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women and the risk is increased threefold in diabetics. In postmenopausal diabetics, the ovary responds to hyperinsulinemia by increasing secretion of testosterone precursors which increases the risk of CVD. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-2010) and the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures were used to test the hypothesis that a history of bilateral oophorectomy -surgical removal of both ovaries-would decrease the risk of CVD among postmenopausal diabetic women due to reduced androgen levels. Logistic regression, discrete time logit model, B-Spline regression and Cox proportional hazards models were …

The Relationship Between Early Attachment And Adolescent Risky Behaviors With Changes In Loneliness In A Mediating Role., Sze Sze Tong May 2013

The Relationship Between Early Attachment And Adolescent Risky Behaviors With Changes In Loneliness In A Mediating Role., Sze Sze Tong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The premise that attachment in the early stages of development is influential on future development has been extensively researched. Though research denotes that attachment in early development does influence behavioral outcomes in later stages of development, the path of influence is an indirect one, often involving more temporally proximal mediating variables (i.e. mediating variables that occur in the time between the assessment of attachment in the early stages and the measurement of behavioral outcome variables in the later stages of development). Previous research in this area has identified various mediating variables: relationship variables, individual child characteristics, environmental variables, and behavioral …

Studies On The Structure And Pathogens Of The Small Hive Beetle (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), Natasha A. Wright May 2013

Studies On The Structure And Pathogens Of The Small Hive Beetle (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), Natasha A. Wright

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The small hive beetle (Aethina tumida, SHB) is an invasive pest of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies in the United States. The adult and larval beetles can ruin honey through fecal contamination and by vectoring a mutualistic yeast (Kodamaea ohmeri) that causes honey fermentation. These beetles also impact honey bee colonies by feeding on bee eggs, bee brood, and pollen. Severe beetle infestations can cause colonies to decline or abscond.

The SHB has been present in the United States since at least 1998. Since then, there have been several published papers on how to successfully rear these beetles. Laboratory rearing …

Strategies To Enhance Conversion Of Lignocellulosic Biomass To Fermentable Sugars And To Enhance Anaerobic Digestion Of Algal Biomass For Biogas Production, Kristen M. Sims May 2013

Strategies To Enhance Conversion Of Lignocellulosic Biomass To Fermentable Sugars And To Enhance Anaerobic Digestion Of Algal Biomass For Biogas Production, Kristen M. Sims

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

For economical conversion of cellulosic biomass to biofuel sources, such as ethanol and biogas, high concentrations of biomass must be processed to minimize downstream costs associated with dilute solutions. Further, the fundamental processes that drive biomass transformation must be understood in order to optimize conversion processes and to efficiently overcome the technological and economic barriers of biofuel production. One such barrier includes the recalcitrance of biomass to degradation. In order to overcome the recalcitrance of biomass, this study focuses on pretreatment strategies to break down the cell wall components and to make the biomass more susceptible to enzymatic action.

Specifically, …

Optimization Of Polyhydroxybutyrate Production In Recombinant Escherichia Coli Through Metabolic Modeling And Simulation, Yoshitaro Heshiki May 2013

Optimization Of Polyhydroxybutyrate Production In Recombinant Escherichia Coli Through Metabolic Modeling And Simulation, Yoshitaro Heshiki

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The objective of this study is to optimize the growth media and genes to maximize PHB production computer simulations, and to evaluate the simulation results through experiments. In order to achieve this objective, the metabolism of E. coli that produces PHB was modeled using the existing E. coli genome-scale metabolic networks. To identify the best additional nutrient for PHB production, carbon sources, minerals, amiano acids, nitrogen sources, and sulfur sources were examined by production potential analysis. Strain design was conducted to find the unwanted reactions to overexpress PHB synthesis pathway.

Connection Between Cannabis Use And Psychosis And The Direct Vs. Indirect Form Of Inquiry To Combat Self-Report Bias, Lauren Grady May 2013

Connection Between Cannabis Use And Psychosis And The Direct Vs. Indirect Form Of Inquiry To Combat Self-Report Bias, Lauren Grady

Psychology

The purpose of this paper is to investigate two problems: one clinical and one methodological. The first is whether there is a connection between drug use, and specifically cannabis use, and psychosis. Previous research on the subject has provided mixed results. Van Os et al. (2002) and Arseneault et al. (2002) both found that cannabis use predicted the onset of psychosis. Van Dam, Earleywine, & DiGiacomo (2008) found that the use of other drugs was a better predictor of psychosis than cannabis alone. The second problem involves how to maximize honesty when people answer questions regarding their own drug use. …

Removing The Classical Landmark: Assessing An Epistemology Governed By Methodological Naturalism, Kegan Shaw May 2013

Removing The Classical Landmark: Assessing An Epistemology Governed By Methodological Naturalism, Kegan Shaw

Masters Theses

This paper proposes to assess the naturalist project in epistemology with an eye towards exposing the project as deficient for serving as a robust epistemological project. Epistemologists treasure a certain family of questions and burden themselves with a number of specific concerns the most important of which, I think, cannot be answered by the epistemological naturalist. Ignoring these questions, I will argue, essentially amounts to a dismissal of the principle tension that primarily motivates and properly guides epistemological theorizing. This tension is the familiar appearance vs. reality distinction and characterizes what I am calling the classical landmark or boundary-stone for …

Forage Quality Of Andropogon Gerardii Across A Precipitation Gradient, Juliette Donatelli May 2013

Forage Quality Of Andropogon Gerardii Across A Precipitation Gradient, Juliette Donatelli

Theses

This study focused on the ecotypic variation in forage quality of Andropogon gerardii Vitman, a dominant C4 grass in North American grasslands and an important forage grass for native and introduced grazers. Ecotypes are genetic variations of a plant species adapted to local environmental conditions. Andropogon gerardii is represented by many local ecotypes across its range. Forage quality analyses quantify digestibility and nutrition of a plant sample and allow an assessment of nutritional value for grazers. The variability in forage quality among A. gerardii ecotypes is unknown. This study aimed to quantify variation in forage quality of A. gerardii collected …

Cypriot Religion Of The Early Bronze Age: Insular And Transmitted Ideologies, Ca. 2500-2000 B.C.E., Donovan Adams May 2013

Cypriot Religion Of The Early Bronze Age: Insular And Transmitted Ideologies, Ca. 2500-2000 B.C.E., Donovan Adams

Anthropology

The Early Bronze Age of Cyprus is not a very well understood chronological period of the island for a variety of reasons. These include: the inaccessibility of the northern part of the island after the Turkish invasion, the lack of a written language, and the fragility of Cypriot artifacts. Many aspects of protohistoric Cypriot life have become more understood, such as: the economic structure, social organization, and interactions between Cyprus and Anatolia. Despite this improvement in some areas, religion is still largely not understood. With the arrival of new animals and symbols, there is clearly a shift in reverence. However, …

Molecular Actions Of The Vitamin D Receptor In Mammary And Skin Carcinogenesis, Samantha L. Chu May 2013

Molecular Actions Of The Vitamin D Receptor In Mammary And Skin Carcinogenesis, Samantha L. Chu

Anthropology

Vitamin D has been linked to breast cancer risk in animal and human studies, suggesting that the active metabolite 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25D) might protect breast cells from transformation. In human mammary epithelial (HME-hTERT) cells, which express vitamin D receptor (VDR), 1,25D exerts anti proliferative and pro-differentiating effects, but the molecular mechanisms that mediate these actions are unknown. In previous studies we used genomic profiling to classify 1,25D regulated networks in HME-hTERT cells that may contribute to the anti-cancer effects of vitamin D. Through this approach we detected a 60-fold increase in the cytokine CD14 in HME-hTERT cells treated with vitamin …

Evolution Of Complex Features In Digital Organisms, Javier A. Magana May 2013

Evolution Of Complex Features In Digital Organisms, Javier A. Magana

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis examines how complex features evolve in digital organisms, and how capabilities that evolved earlier provide a scaffold for evolving new features. I wanted to see how the organisms used previous adaptations to succeed in new environments, and how significant are these previous adaptations. The system used is the Avida platform, which is software that implements Darwinian evolution on self-replicating digital organisms. First, the system is seeded with ancestors that can only replicate, which gave a baseline for the quality of the task at the end of evolution. Second, the system used ancestors from a simpler environment as seeds. …
