The Streptococcal Collagen-Like Protein-1 (Scl1) Is A Multifunctional Adhesin In Extracellular Matrix Interactions, Biofilm Formation, And Host Colonization By Group A Streptococcus, Heaven A. Oliver-Kozup
The Streptococcal Collagen-Like Protein-1 (Scl1) Is A Multifunctional Adhesin In Extracellular Matrix Interactions, Biofilm Formation, And Host Colonization By Group A Streptococcus, Heaven A. Oliver-Kozup
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is responsible for over 100 million skin infections annually that may lead to invasive episodes and autoimmune sequelaes. Wounds and unapparent skin infringements are susceptible to the introduction of GAS and serve as a portal of entry. The nutritional nature of a wound and the accessibility to exposed host cell surfaces and extracellular matrix components create a model milieu for successful host colonization and potential biofilm formation. The initiation of biofilm is often mediated by bacterial surface adhesins and has been shown to interfere with wound healing by blocking critical host cellular interactions. However, the underlying …
Early And Late Stage Mechanisms For Vocalization Processing In The Human Auditory System, William James Talkington
Early And Late Stage Mechanisms For Vocalization Processing In The Human Auditory System, William James Talkington
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The human auditory system is able to rapidly process incoming acoustic information, actively filtering, categorizing, or suppressing different elements of the incoming acoustic stream. Vocalizations produced by other humans (conspecifics) likely represent the most ethologically-relevant sounds encountered by hearing individuals. Subtle acoustic characteristics of these vocalizations aid in determining the identity, emotional state, health, intent, etc. of the producer. The ability to assess vocalizations is likely subserved by a specialized network of structures and functional connections that are optimized for this stimulus class. Early elements of this network would show sensitivity to the most basic acoustic features of these sounds; …
The Effects Of Race And Gender On The Satisfaction Levels Of Entering And Advanced Level Doctoral Students, Tiffany Nicole Labon
The Effects Of Race And Gender On The Satisfaction Levels Of Entering And Advanced Level Doctoral Students, Tiffany Nicole Labon
Dissertations
Doctoral education is an aspect of higher education that can be both rewarding and challenging for anyone who attempts the journey. Thelin (2004) stated many graduate students obtain the necessary skills that their individual fields of study require in their master’s and doctoral programs of study. Levine (2005), however, has found that the levels of satisfaction between what students expect and what they receive are at odds at many colleges and universities around the country. Thus, the need to assess graduate programs and services regarding satisfaction is warranted.
The purpose of this study was to compare the relationship of overall …

Toward A Model For Predicting Depression Among Veterans, Nita Aurora Magee-Cornelius
Toward A Model For Predicting Depression Among Veterans, Nita Aurora Magee-Cornelius
Dissertations
Major depression, identified as a leading cause of disability in the United States, is often first diagnosed by primary care providers. This disability is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and a lower quality of life. With approximately one in every three veteran diagnosed with depression and the rate of suicide increasing in the United States military (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2009), the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 items (PHQ-2) can be instrumental in identification and monitoring of depressive symptoms. The purposes of this retrospective study were to determine the prevalence of depression, as measured by the federally mandated PHQ-2 in the VA, …

Infrastructural variables (parking, bathrooms, site …
Phytoplankton Community Distribution And Light Absorption Properties In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Sumit Chakraborty
Phytoplankton Community Distribution And Light Absorption Properties In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Sumit Chakraborty
Dissertations
The theme of this dissertation was to understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of the phytoplankton community, its light absorption properties, and its relationship to underlying physicochemical processes. Understanding these phenomena will benefit efforts to predict pathways of carbon transformation in the ocean, to estimate primary productivity (PP) and to characterize distributions of phytoplankton communities using ocean color remote sensing.
This research entailed four different studies, which address different objectives. The first two studies dealt with phytoplankton community composition and its relationship to environmental variables. A chemotaxonomic approach was used, which was successful in revealing distinct phytoplankton assemblages in distinct water mass …

Investigating The Function Of The Mold Specific Gene M46, In The Pathogenic Dimorphic Fungus Histoplasma Capsulatum, Davida Lashaundra Crossley
Dissertations
Histoplasma capsulatum (Hc) is a dimorphic fungus that is the etiologic agent for the respiratory infection histoplasmosis. The fungus is found in the environment in contaminated soils of birds and bat excreta as a multi-cellular saprophytic mold. Once the soil is disturbed, spores are released and are inhaled into the lungs. In the lungs, the fungus converts to uni-cellular parasitic yeast (Maresca & Kobayashi, 1989). The conversion from mold to yeast is a requirement for pathogenesis. Previously, several mold specific genes have been isolated by our laboratory from a subtracted cDNA library. One such gene, is M46. M46 is a …
Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward Science In The Nursing Curricula, Jill Deanne Maroo
Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward Science In The Nursing Curricula, Jill Deanne Maroo
Dissertations
The nursing profession combines the art of caregiving with scientific concepts. Nursing students need to learn science in order to start in a nursing program. However, previous research showed that students left the nursing program, stating it included too much science (Andrew et al., 2008). Research has shown a correlation between students’ attitudes and their performance in a subject (Osborne, Simon, & Collins, 2003). However, little research exists on the overall attitude of nursing students toward science. At the time of my study there existed no large scale quantitative study on my topic. The purpose of my study was to …
Utilizing Polymer Topology In Peptide-Based Block Copolymers: Unique Aqueous Assembly And Responsive Behavior, Jacob Griffin Ray
Utilizing Polymer Topology In Peptide-Based Block Copolymers: Unique Aqueous Assembly And Responsive Behavior, Jacob Griffin Ray
Dissertations
This document details work in the area of amphiphilic polypeptide-based block copolymers that are able to self-assemble into well-defined nanostructures in aqueous solution. The main focus of this work is to understand the impacts of polymer topology on self-assembly behavior and response to external stimulus, particularly pH. Poly(L-lysine) and poly(L-glutamic acid) are two pH-responsive, hydrophilic polypeptides that possess the unique property of undergoing α-helix to random coil secondary structure transitions with pH, and this responsiveness can lead to global morphology changes such as changes in aggregate size or even morphology transitions. These polypeptides are synthesized via ring opening polymerization of …
Gene Regulatory Network Reconstruction Using Dynamic Bayesian Networks, Haoni Li
Gene Regulatory Network Reconstruction Using Dynamic Bayesian Networks, Haoni Li
Dissertations
High-content technologies such as DNA microarrays can provide a system-scale overview of how genes interact with each other in a network context. Various mathematical methods and computational approaches have been proposed to reconstruct GRNs, including Boolean networks, information theory, differential equations and Bayesian networks. GRN reconstruction faces huge intrinsic challenges on both experimental and theoretical fronts, because the inputs and outputs of the molecular processes are unclear and the underlying principles are unknown or too complex.
In this work, we focused on improving the accuracy and speed of GRN reconstruction with Dynamic Bayesian based method. A commonly used structure-learning algorithm …

Dynamic Bioactive Stimuli-Responsive Polymeric Surfaces, Heather Marie Pearson
Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the design, synthesis, and development of antimicrobial and anticoagulant surfaces of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) polymers. Aliphatic polymeric surfaces of PE and PP polymers functionalized using click chemistry reactions by the attachment of –COOH groups via microwave plasma reactions followed by functionalization with alkyne moieties. Azide containing ampicillin (AMP) was synthesized and subsequently clicked into the alkyne prepared PE and PP surfaces. Compared to non-functionalized PP and PE surfaces, the AMP clicked surfaces exhibited substantially enhanced antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. To expand the biocompatibility of polymeric surface …

Dissertations
Socioscientific issues (SSI) are potentially controversial topics, which can be examined using a social and a scientific perspective. The inclusion of these topics in elementary and secondary classrooms has caused a number of conflicts over the past century. In the present study, I explore the willingness of teachers to include three SSI: evolution, stem cell research, and global climate change in the science curricula. Participants included 221 educators currently employed in K-12 schools. Teachers have the greatest impact on classroom instruction, regardless of state curricula. I found most educators willing to include the three previously named SSI in the curricula, …

Gamification In Science Education: The Relationship Of Educational Games To Motivation And Achievement, Kelly Elizabeth Rouse
Gamification In Science Education: The Relationship Of Educational Games To Motivation And Achievement, Kelly Elizabeth Rouse
Dissertations
Community colleges have become increasingly more important in America’s higher education system. Part of this emphasis has been directly due to President Obama’s 2010 directive to produce a competitive workforce in the United States by increasing the community college graduation rate by five million over the next decade (Madhani, 2010). Community colleges allow open admission for students which permits marginally prepared students to enter. These students may lack motivation, which contributes to student attrition (Williams, 2010). The focus of this study is to examine methods that may improve student learning and motivation, which could ultimately lead to higher graduation rates. …

Effects Of Food Dispersion On Dominance Related Behaviors In Garnett's Bushbaby (Otolemur Garnettii)?, Kyle Daniel Edens
Effects Of Food Dispersion On Dominance Related Behaviors In Garnett's Bushbaby (Otolemur Garnettii)?, Kyle Daniel Edens
Dissertations
Socio-ecological theorists tie primate social structure diversity to variations in habitats within which primate species reside. This premise permits laboratory researchers to investigate specific factors that influence or relate to social structure formation and maintenance. The focus of the current investigation was three fold. We first aimed to determine the relationships between traditional and non-traditional behavioral measures of dominance, then evidence for dominance hierarchy formation was examined, and various hypotheses were tested to discern if adjustments in the foraging context altered social behaviors in Garnett’s bushbaby (Otolemur garnettii). It was determined that animals likely to displace conspecifics were …

Interrelationships Between Testosterone, Aggression, And Parental Care Of A Temperate-Zone, Resident Songbird, The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis Cardinalis), Margaret Susan Devries
Dissertations
Interrelationships among testosterone (T), aggression, and parental care have received much investigative attention. Within birds, many studies have focused on examining such relationships using species characterized by relatively brief periods of territoriality and breeding. Few have investigated links between circulating T and reproductive behavior in birds that are year-round territorial residents and have lengthy breeding seasons, such as the Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). The following six chapters report and discuss findings from this dissertation’s examination of aspects of T production and potential interconnections with circulating T, aggression, and parental care in male and female cardinals. This work suggests …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
We have previously shown that delivery of the porcine type I interferon gene (poIFN-α/β) with a replication-defective human adenovirus vector (adenovirus 5 [Ad5]) can sterilely protect swine challenged with foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) 1 day later. However, the need of relatively high doses of Ad5 limits the applicability of such a control strategy in the livestock industry. Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEE) empty replicon particles (VRPs) can induce rapid protection of mice against either homologous or, in some cases, heterologous virus challenge. As an alternative approach to induce rapid protection against FMDV, we have examined the ability of VRPs containing …

Cytokinins are N6-substituted adenine derivatives that play diverse roles in plant growth and development. We sought to define a robust set of genes regulated by cytokinin as well as to query the response of genes not represented on microarrays. To this end, we performed a meta-analysis of microarray data from a variety of cytokinin-treated samples and used RNA-seq to examine cytokinin-regulated gene expression in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Microarray meta-analysis using 13 microarray experiments combined with empirically defined filtering criteria identified a set of 226 genes differentially regulated by cytokinin, a subset of which has previously been …

A Multi-Gene Molecular Systematic Study Of The Kickxellomycotina, Including The Examination Of Two New Genes (Mcm7 And Tsr1) For Phylogenetic Inference, Eric Dennis Tretter
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Kickxellomycotina is a recently described subphylum of Fungi defined by the presence of a unique disciform septal pore with a lenticular plug. The relationship between members of the group has proven difficult to resolve with traditional methods due to the degree of morphological and ecological variation among taxa within the clade. Furthermore, existing phylogenetic studies have lacked either the taxonomic coverage or had insufficient phylogenetic resolution to reveal the evolutionary history of the group.
In chapter one, I investigate the phylogenetic utility of two single-copy protein-coding genes, MCM7 and TSR1, to improve phylogenetic resolution within the clade. Suitable primers were …

A Memristor-Based Neuromorphic Computing Application, Adrian Rothenbuhler
A Memristor-Based Neuromorphic Computing Application, Adrian Rothenbuhler
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Artificial neural networks have recently received renewed interest because of the discovery of the memristor. The memristor is the fourth basic circuit element, hypothesized to exist by Leon Chua in 1971 and physically realized in 2008. The two-terminal device acts like a resistor with memory and is therefore of great interest for use as a synapse in hardware ANNs. Recent advances in memristor technology allowed these devices to migrate from the experimental stage to the application stage.
This Master's thesis presents the development of a threshold logic gate (TLG), which is a special case of an ANN, implemented with discrete …
Novel Algorithms And Software For Biological Sequence Analysis, William Casey Bullock
Novel Algorithms And Software For Biological Sequence Analysis, William Casey Bullock
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Bioinformatics is a broad realm of research in which Computer Science has much to offer. Collecting, sorting, and analyzing statistical information for DNA and protein sequences is difficult due to the sheer amount of available data. Tools have been created to do this, but they have generally been limited by speed or robustness.
In addition to analyzing the statistical properties of biological sequences, it is also important to model and understand their chemical and physical properties. A number of valuable software tools are available for modeling and predicting the properties of biological sequences in Computational Chemistry, including molecular docking, and …
Apparent Movements Of Birds Within An Urban Riparian Corridor During The Breeding Season, Allison Christine Korte
Apparent Movements Of Birds Within An Urban Riparian Corridor During The Breeding Season, Allison Christine Korte
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Riparian corridors provide diverse vegetation and a water supply that facilitates foraging and provides breeding areas for all sorts of wildlife. Increasing amounts of urbanization has adverse effects on wildlife that utilize riparian areas. Previous studies of habitat use by urban or riparian birds assumed that individuals were unlikely to move from a site once they settled in their breeding areas, however recent studies have shown that site use by birds may not remain static throughout the breeding season and movement may occur. I test the hypothesis that birds move throughout the breeding season leading to changes of habitat use …
Charging And Self-Assembly Of Fullerene Fragments, Michael V. Ferguson
Charging And Self-Assembly Of Fullerene Fragments, Michael V. Ferguson
Chemistry
Buckybowls are bowl-shaped aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons that map onto the surface of fullerene molecules, such as C60 and C70, but lack their full closure. They are revered for their ability to undergo multiple reduction reactions, accepting several electrons, due to their degenerate and low energy LUMO orbitals. Corannulene (C20H10), the smallest buckybowl, is well known for its ability to accept up to four electrons. Many studies have been performed targeting preparation and characterization of corannulene anions using the NMR, ESR and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques. Corannulene has also been found to form a solid adduct with C60 without selectivity in its …
Highly Sensitive Method For Detecting And Separating Pathogens Using Paramagnetic Particles And A Micro-Fluidic System, William Ryan
Highly Sensitive Method For Detecting And Separating Pathogens Using Paramagnetic Particles And A Micro-Fluidic System, William Ryan
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Water is one of the most important compounds on Earth. If a water supply is contaminated with a pathogen, it can have devastating results to an individual or a community. This research is directed at constructing an easily reproducible procedure that could increase the sensitivity of detecting and separating bacteria from the current limits of about 100 cells to 10-20 cells per sample with a ultimate goal of a single cell detection. Here, we report a micro-fluidic system to magnetically capture pathogenic bacteria in water followed by rapid impedance detection using Escherichia coli K-12 as a model bacterium. Paramagnetic beads …
Comparing Decellularized Muscle Tissue With An Engineered Muscle Biomaterial, Katelin Cherry
Comparing Decellularized Muscle Tissue With An Engineered Muscle Biomaterial, Katelin Cherry
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Decellularized tissues composed of extracellular matrix are commonly used for tissue transplantations but this method has many limitations. An alternative approach is to create an extracellular matrix by seeding degradable foams with cells, culturing these foams to allow extracellular matrix to be secreted from the cells, then washing away the degradable foam to collect the material that is produced. This study was interested in comparing decellularized skeletal muscle tissue to an engineered biomaterial that was seeded with skeletal muscle myoblast cells. Collagen content of decellularized tissue and engineered biomaterial were quantified using a hydroxyproline assay to compare the two samples. …
