Learning To Prevent Campus Violence, Eku-Safe: A Bystander Intervention Training Program, Caroline E. Reid, Matthew Irwin, Holly Dye
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
EKU-SAFE is a campus outreach violence prevention program funded through the Department of Justice. One aspect of the project was to design and implement Bystander Intervention Training for all first year students at Eastern Kentucky University, a regional university with an enrollment of 16,000 students. Literature in violence prevention with college campus populations indicates that significant behavior and personal accountability can arise from Bystander Intervention Training (Banyard, Plante, & Moynihan, 2004). The purpose of this article is to report on changes in participants‟ perceptions and interpretations of violence prior to and following Bystander Intervention Training at Eastern Kentucky University and …
A Juvenile Perspective: What Affects Attitudes Of African American, Hispanic, And White Youth Toward The Police., Rodney Lamon Lake
A Juvenile Perspective: What Affects Attitudes Of African American, Hispanic, And White Youth Toward The Police., Rodney Lamon Lake
Wayne State University Dissertations
Race is one of the most powerful variables explaining the public's attitudes toward the police. The majority of studies on race and attitudes toward the police have explored differences between African Americans and Whites. The emphasis of previous research on Black-White comparisons has left unanswered many questions about minority group differences in attitudes toward the police, especially differences between Latinos and African Americans. With the usage of secondary data ("Outcome Evaluation of the Teens, Crime, and the Community/Community Works (TCC/CW) Training Program in Nine Cities across Four States, 2004-2005), this study determined which independent variables (race, age, gender, class, self …
Family Dependency Drug Courts: An Empirical Test Of Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Elizabeth Lindsey-Mowery
Family Dependency Drug Courts: An Empirical Test Of Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Elizabeth Lindsey-Mowery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The rise in cases of child abuse and neglect over the past two decades has overwhelmed the nation’s dependency court and child welfare agencies. While multiple factors are associated with child abuse and neglect, it is indisputable that substance abuse plays a significant role. The families that come into the dependency system with substance abuse issues are substantially more difficult and challenging to serve. Consequently, the families experience low levels of reunification and high levels of child welfare recidivism. In response to the increase in dependency cases involving substance abuse and the inability of the traditional dependency courts (TDC) to …
A Comparison Between Male Perpetrators Of Intimate Partner Violence And Child Sexual Abuse: A Feminist Perspective, Christelle Schafer
A Comparison Between Male Perpetrators Of Intimate Partner Violence And Child Sexual Abuse: A Feminist Perspective, Christelle Schafer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore whether attributes of sex role identity and gender role stress differed between perpetrators of child sexual abuse (CSA) and perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV). The primary research question posed in the research sought to determine if participants’ attitudes on gender role stereotyping or gender role stress were significantly different between perpetrators of CSA and perpetrators of IPV. Participants in this study were a convenience sample of adult males with histories of CSA and IPV from two different outpatient counseling programs. Participants completed the Bem Sex Role Inventory-Short Form (BSRI-SF) and the …

Redemption Deferred: Military Commissions In The War On Terror And The Charge Of Providing Material Support For Terrorism, Dana M. Hollywood
Redemption Deferred: Military Commissions In The War On Terror And The Charge Of Providing Material Support For Terrorism, Dana M. Hollywood
UC Law SF International Law Review
On June 24, 2011, the Court of Military Commission Review (CMCR) released its decision in the case of U.S. v. Hamdan, holding that material support for terrorism (MST) constitutes a law of war violation. The Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit granted certiorari and heard oral arguments in the case on May 3, 2012. The court released its decision on October 16, 2012, as this article was going to the publisher. This article argues that the charge of MST is not a violation of the law of war, and that is the conclusion ultimately reached by the D.C. Circuit. …

The Workplace Relevance Of The Liberal Arts Political Science Ba And How It Might Be Enhanced: Reflections On An Exploratory Survey Of The Ngo Sector, Andrew M. Robinson
The Workplace Relevance Of The Liberal Arts Political Science Ba And How It Might Be Enhanced: Reflections On An Exploratory Survey Of The Ngo Sector, Andrew M. Robinson
Contemporary Studies
Reflecting on a survey of employees of NGOs based in Ontario, Canada, the article considers two questions: How well are our BA programs preparing students for the workplace? Can we enhance workplace relevance without sacrificing our commitment to liberal education? Key findings are presented, including the BA continues to be a desired and employable degree and skills associated with it are valued; employers are not convinced that graduates with BAs necessarily possess these skills; and respondents associate their formal education with individual skills and extracurricular activities with interpersonal skills. Three strategies to enhance the workplace relevance of BA programs without …

Race And Income Disparity: An Ideology-Neutral Approach To Reconciling Capitalism And Economic Justice, Robert M. Hardaway
Race And Income Disparity: An Ideology-Neutral Approach To Reconciling Capitalism And Economic Justice, Robert M. Hardaway
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Income and wealth disparities along racial lines in the United States constitute a continuing threat to the political and democratic stability upon which the economy and government of the United States fundamentaly depends. The quest or solutions to these economic dijpariies has thus far been frustrated by ideological battles between poliical groups and coalitions. In particular, ideological preconceptions have prevented these groups from listening to the ideas and proposals of opposing groups and working together to find real solutions to the problem of income disparities that actually work. Instead, they have created policies which, while fitting within a preconceived ideological …

Legality, Criminality And Agency Beyond The State: Forest Governance, Illegal Logging And Associated Trade, Lorraine Elliott
Legality, Criminality And Agency Beyond The State: Forest Governance, Illegal Logging And Associated Trade, Lorraine Elliott
Transnational Business Governance Interactions Working Papers
This paper examines the disconnect between the literature on and practice of legality verification (LV) in the forest sector and what would seem to be a logical extension into the literature on and responses to forest crime and, more specifically, transnational criminality associated with trade in illegally logged timber. The apparently logical overlap between these two areas of endeavour arises because both are dealing with aspects of supply chains or chains of custody involving raw timber, forest products or timber products more generally. The disconnect, I suggest here, arises because of a lack of 'joined up thinking' between the two …
