‘Buffers’ Against Crime? Exploring The Roles And Limitations Of Positive Relationships Among Women In Prison, Emily M. Wright, Dana D. Dehart, Barbara A. Koons-Witt, Courtney A. Crittenden
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
A considerable amount of research focuses on the detrimental influence that relationships pose for women offenders while relatively little attention has been given to the potential positive impact of relationships in their lives. This study investigates how women offenders’ positive relationships work as ‘buffers’ against their criminal involvement, as well as why some positive influences do not elicit long-term change in women. We examine various forms of relationships (both romantic and non-romantic) that female offenders develop and explore the mechanisms by which these relationships might influence their behavior. Life history interviews conducted with 60 incarcerated women revealed that women’s family …

"Somebody Better Put Their Pants On And Be Talking About It" : White Therapists Who Identify As Anti-Racist Addressing Racism And Racial Identity With White Clients, Morgan R. Stone
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explores how White therapists who identify as anti-racist address race, racism, and racial identity with white clients from an anti-racist perspective. Twelve White therapists were interviewed and asked what anti-racism means to them, how they have responded to racism with white clients, and how they attempt to incorporate anti-racism values into their lives and therapy practices. The therapists were also asked how they were trained to address these issues in their psychology, social work, and counseling programs, and their use of the racial identity of their white clients to improve therapeutic outcomes was discussed. Most of the …

Peel-Off Lawyers: Legal Professionals In India's Corporate Law Firm Sector, Jayanth K. Krishnan
Peel-Off Lawyers: Legal Professionals In India's Corporate Law Firm Sector, Jayanth K. Krishnan
Socio-Legal Review
This stuy is about hierarchj within the legalprofession - how itpresents itself, how it is retained, and how it is combated. The soio legal literature on this subject is rich, with many roots tracing back to Professor Marc Galanter famous early 1970s article on the Haves' and Have-Nots.' Galanter'spiece and the work of those influenced by him rghty suggest that resources - institutional, financial, and demogr'phic - contribute to whether lawyers are, and remain as, part of the Haves.' Yet, while resources of course greaty matter, as this studj will argue other forces are sgn fcant as well. One set, …

Although many adults and children are resilient after divorce, it is common for marital breakups to precipitate the need for government assistance for families who had been self-sufficient. This study focuses on the economic costs of divorce associated with means-tested welfare programs in Texas, which fall into five central areas: medical assistance; cash assistance; food assistance; housing, energy, and utility assistance; and child care and development assistance. The study estimated that Texas spends at least $3.18 billion on divorce and its related consequences each year, accounting for approximately 12% of the total Texas budget in 2008. These results reinforce the …

A Witness Against Himself: A Case For Stronger Legal Protection Of Encryption, Benjamin Folkinshteyn
A Witness Against Himself: A Case For Stronger Legal Protection Of Encryption, Benjamin Folkinshteyn
Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal
This Article examines the application of the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination to compelled disclosure of unencrypted data. Such disclosure can include provision of passwords to access encrypted data as well as, increasingly, providing unencrypted data after compelled decryption.
The pervasiveness and persistence of electronic data drastically increases the availability of information with potential evidentiary value that has not previously existed with physical evidence. The courts have struggled with finding the appropriate balance in determining the scope and applicability of the privilege against self-incrimination to electronic evidence. The lack of precise physical world analogues to encryption has led to particular …

Non-Consensual Care And The Pregnant Woman: An Ethical Concern, Alice Prive’ Phd, Rnc, Stacy Serber Phd, Rn
Journal of Health Ethics
Non-consensual care, or care done to a pregnant woman that includes treatments, hospitalization or even surgery without her consent, raises legal and ethical concerns. When do maternal claims not outweigh third party demands on behalf of the fetus? The American Nurses Association’s (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses was developed to guide nurses in responsible, quality care consistent with the ethics inherent in the profession.
