Perceptual Harm And The Corporate Criminal, Erin Sheley Feb 2013

Perceptual Harm And The Corporate Criminal, Erin Sheley

University of Cincinnati Law Review

This article defends the controversial existence of criminal liability for corporations by showing how, when a corporation commits a crime, it imposes additional harms on its victims which flow specifically from the nature of the corporate structure itself and therefore cannot be vindicated solely through the punishment of individual employees. First, I examine the current debate on corporate criminal liability and argue that it overlooks the important question of whether there is a difference in kind, as opposed to simply degree, which distinguishes corporate crime from individual crime and therefore justifies allegedly “redundant” punishment. Second, I use the example of …

Trips To Washington D.C. Inspire And Motivate Gardner-Webb Students, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

The belief that “education is a staging ground for action” is conveyed in many ways at Gardner-Webb University. Most recently, the concept became more than just a theory discussed within the walls of a classroom as dozens of students participated in two separate trips to the nation’s capitol within a span of less than two months. One visit was academically driven, while the other helped advance a social issue important to many GWU students.

Research Brief: "Risk Of Incarceration And Other Characteristics Of Iraq And Afghanistan Era Veterans In State And Federal Prisons", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief examines data from The Health Care for Reentry Veterans (HCRV) to compare the risk of incarceration of veterans in order to identify socio-demographic and clinical characteristics in incarcerated veterans. OEF/OIF/OND veterans appeared to be at lower risk of incarceration than veterans of other service eras, but those who were incarcerated had higher rates of PTSD and would benefit from policies that fund accessible programing aimed at increasing vocational training and increasing educational opportunities. In future studies, researchers should focus on the implementation of PTSD treatment services for the incarcerated veteran population, including the success rate of various programs …

Preliminary Exploration Of Bystander Intention To Stand Up For A Female-Peer Targeted In Sexual Harassment In Greek Academia, Stiliani “Ani” Chroni, Stefania Grigoriou, Antonis Hatzigeorgiadis, Yannis Theodorakis Feb 2013

Preliminary Exploration Of Bystander Intention To Stand Up For A Female-Peer Targeted In Sexual Harassment In Greek Academia, Stiliani “Ani” Chroni, Stefania Grigoriou, Antonis Hatzigeorgiadis, Yannis Theodorakis

Journal of International Women's Studies

University students’ intentions to stand up for a female-peer victimized in a sexual harassment incident by peer and/or professor as perpetrator were explored using the planned behavior theory. The participants were 296 Greek male and female undergraduate students. Using a standard planned behavior theory questionnaire, hypothetical scenarios of sexual harassment conveyed through (a) unwanted verbal comments of sexual content, (b) unwanted physical contact, and (c) gender based taunting, were presented to participants. In all scenarios, bystander intention to stand up was predicted. Specifically, we found that it is more likely for a student-bystander to intervene when perceiving a strong social …

Violence Between Female In-Laws In India, Martin Rew, Geetanjali Gangoli, Aisha K. Gill Feb 2013

Violence Between Female In-Laws In India, Martin Rew, Geetanjali Gangoli, Aisha K. Gill

Journal of International Women's Studies

Indian mothers-in law are consistently legally implicated in violence against their daughters-in-law, particularly in dowry-related cases. This paper explores whether current sociological, psycho-dynamic and feminist explanations are adequate, arguing that policy and research must incorporate deeper understandings of the relationship between violence, abuse and the continuum of everyday practices of power and control in middle-class Indian households if women are to be protected from abuse. Critically, policy and research must recognise the impact of the socio-cultural preference for sons. Daughters are viewed as inferior; however, mothers to sons enjoy a relatively elevated position within the family. Even leaving aside issues …

Antisocial Behavior From Adolescence To Early Adulthood: Heritability, Stability, And Correlates Using A Longitudinal Twin Sample, Ashley Dibble

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the heritability, stability, and outcomes of antisocial behavior from adolescence into adulthood in a longitudinal twin sample. Specifically, the genetic and environmental influences on conduct disorder, adult antisocial behavior, and alcohol dependence were examined. The influence of genes and environment on the relationship between these disorders was also examined. The study utilized a subset of FinnTwin12, a population-based twin study that consists of five consecutive birth cohorts. The subsample consisted of 1035 twin pairs (N = 2070) and of that 2070, 1854 completed the intensive interview at age 14. At age 22, …
