Prosecuting Those Bearing Greatest Responsibility: The Lessons Of The Special Court For Sierra Leone, Charles C. Jalloh Apr 2013

Prosecuting Those Bearing Greatest Responsibility: The Lessons Of The Special Court For Sierra Leone, Charles C. Jalloh

Articles

This Article examines the controversial article 1(1) of the Statute of the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL) giving that tribunal the competence "to prosecute those who bear the greatest responsibility" for serious international and domestic crimes committed during the latter part of the notoriously brutal Sierra Leonean conflict. The debate that arose during the SCSL trials was whether this bare statement constituted a jurisdictional requirement that the prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt or merely a type of guideline for the exercise of prosecutorial discretion. The judges of the court split on the issue. This paper is the …

Factors Influencing The Completion Of The Ged In A Federal Correctional Setting: A Multiple Regression Correlation-Predictive Study, Kimberly Akers

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Correctional education's primary goal is to reduce recidivism and increase employment among ex-offenders. The Bureau of Prison's practical goal in its mandatory GED program is to maximize the number of inmates obtaining the GED in a given time period. The purpose of this research is to model the number of instructional hours an inmate requires to obtain the GED as a regression on socio-demographic and Bureau of Prison policy variables related to inmate conduct in education programs. This quantitative research uses multiple regression to produce and analyze the model. An archival random sample of GED graduates in a large federal …

An Exploration Of Drug Trafficking Among Female Offenders In The Caribbean, Dianne Berger-Hill Apr 2013

An Exploration Of Drug Trafficking Among Female Offenders In The Caribbean, Dianne Berger-Hill

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is an exploratory study examining drug trafficking among female offenders under the custodial care of the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service. The female offenders were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide that inquired into how they were recruited, why they decided to traffic drugs, did they join in with friends, were family members or relatives involved in the activity, or did they initiate it on their own, and if their childhood experiences influenced them into getting involved with drug trafficking. Themes were identified during the course of the data analysis. More than half of the female offenders were …

Correlates Of Help-Seeking Following Stalking Victimization: A Study Of College Women, Saige E. Jutras, Katie Edwards, Kateryna Sylaska

Honors Theses and Capstones

The current study explored factors related to college women’s coping processes associated with stalking using an online survey methodology. Results (N= 305 college women reporting stalking victimization within the last three years) showed that 85% of women disclosed their stalking experiences most commonly to female friends. Additionally, women used a variety of coping mechanisms in response to their stalking victimization; although avoiding thinking about or acting on the stalking experience were the most common strategies, victims rated direct forms of coping as more effective in deterring the stalking behavior. Women’s coping responses to stalking were related to a …

Tasers And Community Controversy: Investigating Training Officer Perceptions Of Public Concern Over Conducted Energy Weapons, Joseph De Angelis, Brian Wolf Apr 2013

Tasers And Community Controversy: Investigating Training Officer Perceptions Of Public Concern Over Conducted Energy Weapons, Joseph De Angelis, Brian Wolf

The Qualitative Report

Over the last several decades, “Tasers,” “stun guns” and other conducted energy devices (CEDs) have become a widely adopted, though publicly controversial, form of police restraint technology. While there is a growing body of research on the physiological effects of these types of weapons, less attention has been devoted to the social effects of this technology. This paper draws on in - depth interviews with a stratified random sample of police training officers from two states (n=27) to explore the effect that community controversy over the use of CEDs has had on police organizational practices. In particular, we explore how …

Mass Media Distortion Of Violent Crime In The United States And Its Effect On Public Peace Of Mind, Robert S. Arold Mar 2013

Mass Media Distortion Of Violent Crime In The United States And Its Effect On Public Peace Of Mind, Robert S. Arold

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

In a society where violent crime is rampant, the media have varying effects on public peace of mind all over the United States. News reports are viewed via television broadcast, print publication, and with other convergent components that evolve with technological developments; the factors of each medium can determine the viewer’s perception of a given story. Through extensive research and survey results of students at a mid-Atlantic liberal arts institution, this study explores the relationship between media coverage of violent crimes and the public’s response to such coverage by answering several questions: (1) do the United States mass media distort …

Rediscovering The Core Of Public Health, Steven Teutsch, Jonathan E. Fielding Mar 2013

Rediscovering The Core Of Public Health, Steven Teutsch, Jonathan E. Fielding

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

The success of public health has been its ability to understand contemporary health problems, to communicate the needs successfully, to identify solutions, and to implement them through programs and policies. In the past 50 years, those successes can be attributed largely to control of infectious disease, improved maternal and child health, delivery of other personal health care services, and changes in behaviors, particularly smoking. Yet health is primarily a product of our social, cultural, and physical environments. To continue to improve the nation’s health and reduce disparities, public health needs to return to its historical roots and engage with other …

Nothing About Us Without Us! The Failure Of The Modern Juvenile Justice System And A Call For Community-Based Justice, Charisa Smith Esq. Mar 2013

Nothing About Us Without Us! The Failure Of The Modern Juvenile Justice System And A Call For Community-Based Justice, Charisa Smith Esq.

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

The modern juvenile justice system is failing our society. A literature review reveals resounding criticism of the system at all points—arrest, court processing, and incarceration. The current system does not effectively reduce recidivism, is wrought with racial disparities, operates with a minimal degree of cultural competence, violates human rights norms, and fails to empower and reform individuals who are directly affected. The current system shatters social bonds and does not hold governmental agencies accountable for wrongdoing or ineffectiveness. Community-based approaches more effectively reduce crime, cost less, are more empowering and culturally competent, help ameliorative civic fragmentation, and are more socially …

The Need For School-Based Teen Dating Violence Prevention, Jeff R. Temple, Vi D. Le, Alexandra Muir, Laurie Goforth, Amy L. Mcelhany

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Schools have several competing demands, and often suffer from inefficient access to needed resources. Thus, the addition of any program into an already overtaxed school system must be met with convincing evidence that 1) a need or problem exists and is relevant to the education of students, 2) the problem is amenable to change, and 3) addressing the problem is in the best interest of educators and students. The purpose of the present paper is to present a case for inclusion of teen dating violence prevention programs in middle and high schools. We also discuss a recent survey of 219 …
