Pathways To Aggressive Behavior: Antisocial And Borderline Personality Symptoms And The Mechanisms Of Impulsivity, Negative Affect, And Distress Tolerance, Katherine Lee Bracken-Minor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Aggressive behaviors, including physical aggression toward others and non-suicidal self-injury, are high-risk behaviors that are prevalent in the college student population. Personality disorder symptoms, particularly those of antisocial personality disorder and borderline personality disorder, are associated with these aggressive behaviors. Some researchers have posited that ASPD and BPD are “mirror-image disorders” that have similar underlying traits but differing behavioral manifestations of those characteristics, namely differing in terms of the object of their aggression. The present study investigated these issues by examining the pathways from ASPD and BPD to aggressive behaviors via the mechanisms of impulsivity, negative affect, and distress tolerance …
Peer Influence And Social Networking Websites: Applying Differential Association And Social Learning Theories To Online Interaction, Timothy Glen Mccuddy
Peer Influence And Social Networking Websites: Applying Differential Association And Social Learning Theories To Online Interaction, Timothy Glen Mccuddy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Differential association and social learning theories explain how individuals learn deviant behavior through traditional in-person social interaction. Online social networking has paved the way for the younger generation to interact with their peer group using a distinctly different method. The purpose of this research is to take an exploratory approach in examining the relationship between online interaction and personal behavior. The current study examined 583 University of Memphis undergraduate students' self-reported personal deviant behavior, as well as the deviant behavior found within their online social networks. Results support the hypothesis that exposure to deviant behavior on online social networks is …

Is citizenship status a legitimate basis for allocating rights in the United States?
In immigration law the right to remain in the United States is significantly tied to citizenship status. Citizens have an absolutely secure right to remain in the United States regardless of their actions. Noncitizens’ right to remain is less secure because they can be deported if convicted of specific criminal offenses. This Article contends that citizenship is not a legitimate basis for allocating the right to remain. This Article offers normative and historical arguments for a right to remain for noncitizens. This right should be granted to …

Freely Flowing: Openly Accessible Sources For Streaming Video, Deg Farrelly
Charleston Library Conference
There is considerable disagreement within the academic and library spheres as to what can be done to make streaming content available. The process of providing streaming content is expensive, labor intensive, and time consuming. This process, however, doesn’t always require prolonged licensing negotiations, expenditure of precious materials budgets, or large investment of personnel time and effort to digitize, upload, and maintain content. There are many websites that provide quality videos that libraries and media centers can both access and provide access to with minimal effort. This paper offers a list of these legal, openly accessible resources, along with a brief …

The Role Of The Social Environment In Alcohol Or Drug Relapse Of Probationers Recently Released From Jail, Mandy Owens
Psychology ETDs
The current research study looked at the social networks of adult male alcohol or drug offending probationers recently released from jail, assessed if and how social networks change from pre- to post-incarceration, and tested whether changes in social networks were related to alcohol or drug use. Forty adult male probationers were recruited from the New Mexico Corrections Department, Probation Parole Division, and two to seven months after release from jail were administered a single assessment battery that measured social networks, motivation, self-help group involvement, substance use, and other potential correlates of relapse. Results showed that there were significant changes in …

Drug Court: A Therapeutic Alternative To Incarceration, Brian Lagenfeld
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
In the United States, there is a significant drug problem affecting millions directly and countless others indirectly. Drug use and drug-related crime have been on the rise for decades. The government has attempted numerous programs and policies, even declaring a "war on drugs." None of these programs have been effective, as evident in the fact that drug use has continued to rise. Drug use and drug-related crime have caused a number of problems for the United States. The most detrimental are the loss of life and deterioration of the …

Amber J. Powell - Blaming The Victim: A Look At Sexual Assault Adjudication In The Milwaukee County Courthouse, Amber J. Powell
Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013
Even though several studies explore common themes in victim-blaming strategies amongst adult sexual assault cases, very few address how these techniques are used to blame and discredit child sexual assault victims. Therefore, this study compared the cultural narratives used by defense attorneys to blame adult and child sexual assault victims in the courtroom. The study sample consisted of 18 sexual assault cases (5 adult victims and 13 child victims) in three branches of the Milwaukee county courthouse in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The defendants and victims in these cases represent a various ethnicities, ages, and social economic backgrounds. Employing a mixed-methods approach, …

Providing Effective Treatment For Youth With Co-Occurring Disorders, Patrick Kanary, Richard Shepler, Michael Fox
Providing Effective Treatment For Youth With Co-Occurring Disorders, Patrick Kanary, Richard Shepler, Michael Fox
Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education Reports and Briefs
The presence of co-occurring mental disorders among court-involved youth with substance use disorders creates unique challenges for juvenile drug treatment courts. Research consistently finds that these youth present with the greatest impairment in individual and academic functioning, have elevated risk of suicide, and consistently have the poorest treatment outcomes. Policy and practice changes are necessary to successfully address youth with co-occurring disorders in juvenile drug treatment courts.
