Central Falls Welcome Sign Project, Lindsay Guastafeste, Elyssa Roketenetz, Jorge Saenz, Arnold Robinson Jan 2013

Central Falls Welcome Sign Project, Lindsay Guastafeste, Elyssa Roketenetz, Jorge Saenz, Arnold Robinson

Graphic Design

Our inspiration for this modern style welcome sign came mostly from the welcome sign for Vancouver, Canada. This approach would give Central Falls a look of it’s own among the more traditional syle signs of surrounding towns. The double paneled structure design of this option would make for the option of having a bilingual sign, showcasing the multi-cultural heritage of the City.

Community Development

In an effort to prevent social polarization within the East Providence community amongst various social groups, we are recommending that the project target multiple census tracts in East Providence and the east side area of Providence. These census tracts are comprised of high-income and low-income families and individuals of all ages. Specifically, there are seniors who live within the neighborhood who might take advantage of expanded opportunities if they felt the area was safe and accessible.

Broad Street Business Inventory, Michelle Abramowitz, Kelsie Foley, Jackie Melendez, Arnold Robinson

Business

Over previous year, SWAP had compiled an impressive inventory of existing businesses on Broad Street. In addition, partner organizations such as the City and Community Works had other sets of information. The first step in an update was to have a team of RWU students update and expand the inventory. As they did this, they also undertake community research, identification of key issues on the street under the direction of SWAP’s professional staff. This more complete inventory can be the basis to identify key segments of the business community (restaurants, communication, clubs, retail, auto repair, etc.).

The report suggests strategies that can be incorporated into the current work flow and builds upon the current work of the EBCH. The report also presents ways in which to create a more efficient platform for completing marketing tasks, creating opportunities for awareness and knowledge of the EBCH, and increasing consideration of the EBCH as a potential donation focus.

There are a number of potential positioning strategies. The two which make the most sense for the EBCH are to “position the EBCH away from others in the category” and to “position the EBCH as unique.” These strategies have the advantage of setting the EBCH apart from the other organizations that address homelessness. Occupying its own “position” in the minds of potential and current donors is not only an effective communications/marketing strategy but also a less costly one because it avoids head-to-head competition and comparisons.

Architecture and Urban Design

Problems: (1) Sound travels very quick around the curve of the wall creating a disproportional amount of sound on the opposite ends of the arc. (2) Sounds that start in front of the curve gets reflected back to a focal point. The location of that focal point moves depending on where the sound is located. As a result, loud refocused echoes are created at the focal point. When heard, the sounds seem to come from a mysterious place. The effects of the curved walls are extremely strong and need to be addressed. One common mistake is over applying absorptive material …

Rethinking How Business Purpose Is Taught In Catholic Business Education, Lyman P. Q. Johnson, Michael Naughton, William Bojan

Scholarly Articles

Business education at a Catholic university should engage students and faculty across the university in critically examining the purpose of business in society. Following the best practices of leading business schools, the Catholic business curriculum has mostly focused on the shareholder and stakeholder approaches - with the shareholder approach being the predominant view. Creatively engaging the Catholic Social Tradition (especially the “community of persons”) can bring a richer appreciation of the purpose of business in our contemporary society than either the shareholder or stakeholder approaches. We argue that far more discretion to pursue various corporate purposes in manifold ways exists …

Native Grass And Forb Establishment In Post-Agricultural Soil, Courtney D. Hall Jan 2013

Native Grass And Forb Establishment In Post-Agricultural Soil, Courtney D. Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Restoration of degraded and abandoned agricultural land in arid and semiarid climates is a global problem. The erratic patterns of precipitation these lands experience makes restoration of a plant community difficult. Application of supplemental irrigation and inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are two restoration techniques that have been suggested to overcome deficits in natural precipitation. The effects and the interactions of irrigation and seeding date on the ground cover of intended species and unintended exotic species were tested in a post-agricultural restoration experiment in south-central Colorado, USA. The greatest ground cover of intended species and lowest ground cover of …

Underwater: The Need For Massachusetts To Become Climate Ready, Erica Mattison

Florida A & M University Law Review

Massachusetts' longstanding vulnerability to flooding is on the verge of worsening due to expected impacts of climate change over the next several years. Although legislation has prompted the state to convene a multi-agency conversation on climate change adaptation, the work has yet to result in specific planning that will prime the state for reducing damage caused by flooding and other climate impacts. With renewed leadership, the state should prioritize flood risk in the policy agenda, launch a public awareness campaign, plan for infrastructure and state property investments, and facilitate municipal action. Since the issue cannot be adequately addressed by state …

2013 Service-Learning Faculty Survey Results Report, Office Of Service-Learning, Division Of Community Engagement, Virginia Commonwealth University

Division of Community Engagement Resources

Service-learning is an important teaching pedagogy that has been proven effective in enhancing student learning and promoting both academic and civic engagement. As civic engagement continues to gain prominence as an integral aspect of higher education, it is increasingly important that engagement metrics are consistently measured to demonstrate outcomes. This is especially true of service-learning as it strongly correlates with student learning, academic performance, and retention rates. Feedback and suggestions from service-learning faculty members are useful for gaining insights into how service-learning quality can be enhanced at the classroom level and understanding the resource needs of faculty members.

The purpose …
