World Series, Richard C. Crepeau Oct 2013

World Series, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As the baseball season reaches its final few games in this rendition of the World Series, I find myself revisiting some tired but nagging issues including the dreaded Designated Hitter (DH) debate and the hypocritically laced PED controversy. This is not to detract from the excitement of watching two of the most enduring franchises in the game and two of the most successful teams of this new century.

2013 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs Oct 2013

2013 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs

Programs

At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged with their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of their disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual …

Student Equity: Discouraging Cheating In Online Courses, Timothy B. Michael, Melissa A. Williams Oct 2013

Student Equity: Discouraging Cheating In Online Courses, Timothy B. Michael, Melissa A. Williams

Administrative Issues Journal

As online programs at conventional universities continue to expand, administrators and faculty face new challenges. Academic dishonesty is nothing new, but an online testing environment requires different strategies and tactics from what we have had to consider in the past. Our university has recently adapted successful face-toface programs in financial management, both graduate and undergraduate, for delivery in a fully-online format. This paper discusses our experiences moving to a new environment, the challenges of student attempts to cheat and plagiarize, and techniques that we have found to prevent both cheating on high-stakes assessments and plagiarism. We present a number of essential …

Female Fan Avidity In The National Football League, Kathrine Damato Oct 2013

Female Fan Avidity In The National Football League, Kathrine Damato

Sport Management Undergraduate

Women have become increasingly interested in sports. Significantly so with the National Football League, 44% of NFL fans are female fans (Waller, 2013). This new found fandom has abruptly changed the demographic and target market of the sports fan base. Therefore, there has not been a significant amount of research done on the level of fan avidity of females. My goal was to observe the female NFL fan base and help to determine what level of avidity females were considered.

Consumer Behavior & Loyalty Toward Endorsement Livestrong And The Lance Armstrong Scandal: An Analysis Of Consumer Behavior & Loyalty, Brandan Jason

Sport Management Undergraduate

Celebrity-athlete endorsement is a popular and growing resource for current marketing strategies among many corporations. In this respect, there are various questions regarding the worth of celebrity-athletes as a means of marketing and generating consumer loyalty. Corporations and brands must take into account the possible consequences that can be associated with these individuals, specifically when they fall under scandal that leads to a misrepresentation of the corporation or brand that they endorse. In addition, they must consider how these associations affect consumer behavior and loyalty intentions toward their brand or products. This paper will address the following question: When an …

Success Or Bust? An Analysis Of Draft Position And Nfl Success, Connor King Oct 2013

Success Or Bust? An Analysis Of Draft Position And Nfl Success, Connor King

Sport Management Undergraduate

The National Football League (NFL) draft is a reverse-order event that positions the teams with the worst record in the NFL to draft first, thus enabling those teams to get the best talent from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to help their team grow and be successful. In today’s NFL draft, there are 7 rounds of selections which includes 32 selections for 32 teams. While literature exists on what statistics are relevant toward evaluating specific positions and how that knowledge is used to select draft picks, there is no existing research that examines NFL success based on statistics and …

The Factors Of Awareness And Fan Identification Of Soccer Fans, Joseph Mcavoy

Professional soccer is a growing sport in America. The sport of soccer itself is still a growing sport among Americans. I plan on surveying people through social media to see how they became soccer fans. I believe that through this research I will help identify the factors that lead people to become interested in soccer. This will help America create more soccer fans
