Uncommon Courage—Roderick Jackson As Sine Qua Non For The Right To Sue For Retaliation Under Title Ix, Curt L. Hamakawa
Western New England Law Review
In 1999, Roderick Jackson was hired by the Birmingham City Schools to teach drivers’ education and coach the girls’ basketball team at Ensley High School. Soon after arriving and preparing for his first season, Coach Jackson began to notice things that did not sit right with him; things that had nothing to do with the team but rather, with how the team was treated. The girls’ team did not receive the same funding, and they did not have the same access to facilities and equipment as the boys.
Upset by the discriminatory treatment of his team, Jackson expressed his concerns …
Emotion And Memory In Nostalgia Sport Tourism: Examining The Attraction To Postmodern Ballparks Through An Interdisciplinary Lens, Kiernan O. Gordon
Emotion And Memory In Nostalgia Sport Tourism: Examining The Attraction To Postmodern Ballparks Through An Interdisciplinary Lens, Kiernan O. Gordon
Kinesiology
Nostalgia sport tourism, one of Gibson’s (1998) three forms of sport tourism, appears to have received little scholarly attention in contrast to active sport tourism and event sport tourism (Fairley, 2003; Gibson, 2002, 2003; Ritchie & Adair, 2004). Despite this apparent lack of research relative to the other two domains, insightful and thought-provoking scholarship has emerged within nostalgia sport tourism. Sociology, which is one of sport tourism’s parent disciplines, has influenced much of this scholarship (Gibson, 2004; Harris, 2006). Among other things, this epistemological orientation has yielded the importance of emotion and memory to nostalgically oriented experiences. This paper considers …

Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The "glass ceiling" is a metaphor for examining gender disparities between men and women within the workplace. The disparity is particularly dominate in the domain of athletic administration. Why Some Physicians Accept Healthcare It And Others Resist It: An Activity-Theoretic Analysis., Anol Bhattacherjee, Christopher Davis, Neset Hikmet

This paper examines why physicians react differently to the introduction of healthcare information technology (IT) in the same hospital at the same time. These diverse reactions, manifested as different forms of acceptance and resistance, are interpreted within the social-historical context of physicians’ work at a large urban hospital in the USA, using Activity Theory as the theoretical lens. While prior IT research has examined patterns of “similarities” in user behaviors, we examine user “differences” and reconcile these differences within a meta-theoretic framework. We also extend current IT usage research from voluntary to mandatory setting and demonstrate the viability of activity …

Business Plan: Sports Facility In Rochester, Minnesota, Nikki Scherr
Master of Arts in Sport Management
This capstone project involves the construction of a new sports facility, The Sports Hut, located in Rochester, Minnesota. The mission of The Sports Hut organization is to get kids active at a young age, which allows the opportunity for athletes to thrive in their sport and passions, while providing a place to learn and grow in a healthy environment. Although obesity can be a very complex issue, Miller, Rosenbloom and Silverstein (2004) have discovered that obesity affects more than 30% of children and can be found commonly due to the environment and lifestyle in which they group up in. It …

Making The Right Call: Why Fairness Requires Independent Appeals In U.S. Professional Sports Leagues, Jeremy R. Abrams
Making The Right Call: Why Fairness Requires Independent Appeals In U.S. Professional Sports Leagues, Jeremy R. Abrams
Marquette Law Review
Historically, the commissioners of the U.S. professional sports league have had a duty to preserve the integrity of the leagues. Developing from this concept through collective bargaining between the leagues and players’ associations, the disciplinary systems of the leagues are designed to keep conflicts out of the U.S. courts. Recently, these systems have come under considerable public scrutiny questioning their fairness and effectiveness and, in some cases, the integrity of the commissioners and sports. Specifically, there have been issues with conflict of interest of the commissioners and arbitrary decision-making in disciplining players. This Comment explores the disciplinary systems of the …

Proceed To Checkout? The Impact Of Time In Advanced Ticket Purchase Decisions, Brendan Dwyer, Joris Drayer, Stephen L. Shapiro
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
When purchasing tickets in advance, sports consumers are often faced with uncertainty. Most notably, in today's real-time environment, it can be challenging for consumers to determine how ticket prices and seat availability will change over time. Guided by the generic advanced-booking decision model, the current study investigated the role of time, ticket source (primary or secondary market), and team identification in advanced ticket purchasing by exploring a consumer's perceptions of ticket availability and finding a lower price. The results suggest the perceived likelihood of ticket availability and finding a lower priced ticket increased as the date of the game drew …

Factors Influencing Collegiate Athletic Department Revenues, Chad D. Mcevoy, Alan L. Morse, Stephen L. Shapiro
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
One of the primary challenges of Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) collegiate athletic programs is revenue generation, particularly in light of increasing costs and competition. Surprisingly, a limited number of studies have investigated factors related to athletic department-generated revenues. A statistically significant multiple regression model was created, explaining 76.7 percent of the variance in annual generated revenues among FBS programs. Factors such as conference affiliation, success in football and men’s basketball, enrollment, and time were identified as important in predicting revenue generation. The Revenue Theory of Costs was put forth as a framework for better understanding the financial behavior …

Masters Theses
Using phenomenological inquiry, the purpose of this present research was to explore the phenomena of the African-American undergraduate male experience in a retention program at a Midsize Midwestern predominantly White institution. Through data analysis the principle researcher examined the perceptions of the participants to understand the impact of the program. The participants accounted for their shared experiences as being a part of the S.T.R.O.N.G. MENtoring program during the 2011-2012 academic school year. Collectively the participants articulated a greater sense of awareness to their self-perception due their socialization at the site location. The participants also warranted feelings of confirmation biases, an …
