Want To Enroll In A Mooc? No Thanks, My Professors Have Their Own Videos, Enda Mcgovern, Arne Baruca
Marketing Faculty Publications (Archived)
Purpose: The paper explores how professors, in adopting short digital video lectures as a complementary teaching platform outside the classroom, could better enhance the learning experience for digital natives, i.e. millennial students, in challenging the growth of massive open online courses (MOOC). Specifically, the use of personalized, class-specific, video content made available on YouTube, in which the professor-of-record appears, is examined as a complementary learning platform for students required to read textbook material in preparation for class discussions.
Method / Design and Sample: Students were required to view class-specific digital videos on YouTube and thereafter complete a questionnaire to examine …

Under Mounting Pressure: A History Of Media Influence On Major League Baseball Steroid Policies, Dan Deiuliis, David Deiuliis
Journal of Applied Sport Management
This research is interested in the relationships among media coverage, governmental legislation and Major League Baseball’s anabolic steroids testing policies. An analysis of patterns of media coverage, legislation, and adoption of tougher penalties are explored, followed by an analysis of specific legislation in an attempt to identify its specific goals and target populations. The paper first analyzes recent Supreme Court cases and current federal legislation to determine if Congress acted legally in investigating Major League Baseball. Beginning in the mid-1980s with the surfacing of these media reports and ending with baseball’s toughest policy implementation in 2005, it then tracks the …

Perceptions And General Knowledge Of Online Social Networking Activity Of University Student-Athletes And Non-Student-Athletes, Cody T. Havard, Terry Eddy, Lamar Reams, Rebecca L. Stewart, Tariq Ahmad
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The current study investigated differences between student-athletes and non-student-athletes regarding online social networking (OSN) usage. In particular, types of usage, perceptions of monitoring, and knowledge and perceptions of inappropriate online behavior were examined. Participants were student-athletes and non-student-athletes at a mid-sized university in the Rocky Mountain Region, who were asked their perceptions regarding OSN. Results of independent samples t-tests revealed student-athletes felt that students in general were more knowledgeable of the dangers associated with OSN than were non-studentathletes. Further, student-athletes found provocative pictures posted on OSN profiles to be more acceptable than did non-student-athletes. Also, monitoring of online profiles by …

Entry-Level Employment In Intercollegiate Athletic Departments: Non-Readily Observables And Readily Oberservable Attributes Of Job Candidates, Gonzalo Bravo, Doyeon Won, David J. Shonk
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Human resource management scholars and practitioners have recognized the importance of understanding the complexities of staffing personnel. This study focused on the perceived importance of attributes for entry-level applicants to collegiate athletic departments. A total of 315 NCAA athletic administrators who were randomly selected responded to a web-based survey. Respondents were asked to rate the importance of 10 easily observable attributes during the screening process, and 10 non-readily observable skills during the hiring process. Results indicated that career-related work experience was considered to be most important during the screening, followed by the applicant’s recommendation, and leadership experience. While in the …

Brand Establishment At The University Of Chicago: An Investigation Of De-Escalation Of Commitment In University Athletics, Adrien Bouchet, Michael Hutchinson
Journal of Applied Sport Management
This article is a historical case analysis of the University of Chicago’s decision to discontinue participation in scholarship football in 1939. This decision was made at the behest of then University of Chicago President Robert Hutchins and Board of Trustee members in hopes of preserving the university’s academic reputation and brand. This article discusses the decision of a highly selective and academically prestigious research university to abandon Division I athletics during a period of athletic success by its football team. This unprecedented decision by a founding member of one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences, the Big Ten, has left …

Managing The Selection Of Highly Competitive Interscholastic Sport Teams: Recommendations From Coaches On Cutting Players, Chad Seifried, Tim Casey
Journal of Applied Sport Management
This work used a purposive sample of 15 coaches to record information on the cutting process of highly competitive interscholastic varsity boys’ basketball programs. Semi-structured interviews and a content analysis of organizational documents were used to create a basic philosophy on the cutting process. The themes discovered centered on the purpose of interscholastic sport and team selection preferences during the cutting process, methods to reduce the tryout field, and how to break the news to prospective student-athletes about their elimination. Overall, the researchers provide several different strategies suggested by coaches to cut student-athletes from sport teams which they advocate can …

The Effect Of The Star Sportsmanship Education Module On Parents' Self-Perceived Sportsmanship Behaviors In Youth Sport, Dwedor W. Ford, Colby B. Jubenville, Michael B. Phillips
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The purpose of this study was to examine how the STAR Sportsmanship education module affected parent behavior attached to their experience of their child’s sporting endeavors. The Parent Experiences in Youth Sport (PEYS) was utilized to collect data on 95 parents’ self-perceived behavior in youth sport. The PEYS consisted of an 18-item survey focused on how each participant rated their behavior as he/she experienced their child’s participation in some type of youth sport activity. Psychometric testing (e.g. content validity, known-group validity, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency) was conducted on the PEYS to provide validity and reliability evidence. The results indicated …

Soccer-Specific Stadiums And Attendance In Major League Soccer: Investigating The Novelty Effect, Adam Love, Andreas N. Kavazis, Alan Morse, Kurt C. Mayer Jr.
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Major League Soccer (MLS) officials have focused on the construction of soccer-specific stadiums as a key aspect of the league’s development strategy. Research in numerous professional sport contexts has found that teams tend to experience an increase in attendance after moving into new stadiums. Researchers have termed this phenomenon the novelty effect. Given MLS’s longtime emphasis on constructing soccer-specific stadiums, the purpose of the current study was to examine the extent to which a novelty effect exists in MLS. Results of a repeated measures t test indicated that clubs experienced an increase in attendance during their first season in a …
Exploring Organizational Identity And Interpersonal Conflict In Sport Organizations, Shannon Kerwin
Exploring Organizational Identity And Interpersonal Conflict In Sport Organizations, Shannon Kerwin
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Interpersonal conflict is a dysfunctional group process that requires scholarly attention. Despite support for this claim, there is a gap in theoretical knowledge regarding the antecedent conditions to interpersonal disagreement in sport organizations. As such, the tenets of social identity theory were used to explore if and how organizational identity influences the perception of conflict in the regional sport commission context. A multi-method qualitative approach was adopted to serve the purpose of this study. The findings indicate that organizational identity is present, in-group/out-group identity formation contributes to status conflict, and that both formal and informal leadership play a role in …

Discovering Dysfunction In Title Ix Implementation: Ncaa Administrator Literacy, Responsibility, And Fear, Ellen Staurowsky, Erianne A. Weight
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Higher education officials, including presidents and senior athletics administrators, are expected to voluntarily comply with the mandates of Title IX. In anticipation of the need for assistance in learning about the law’s requirements, Title IX regulations devised in the 1970s called for every institution in the country receiving federal financial assistance to appoint a Title IX coordinator to examine campus policies, practices, and philosophies in light of Title IX standards. As a result of the deficits in the application of this Title IX enforcement model, the purpose of this study was to assess how much senior athletics administrators know about …

Joining The Team: A Case Study Identifying And Assessing Critical Factors Influencing Ncaa Division Iii Student-Athlete Matriculation, Daniel D. Covell, Marilyn K. Pelosi, Jodi Lemoi
Journal of Applied Sport Management
This research sought to understand what factors influence how first-year student-athletes at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III institution chose the school to attend in light of the heuristic perspective of bounded rationality, which posits that decision makers are rational in some but not all elements of the decision-making process. Data were assessed for the entire respondent group as well as subgroups based on gender and by amount of non-loan financial aid received by using the principal component analysis and the Mann-Whitney U test. The analysis showed athletic variables such as conference affiliation, quality of opponents, recruiting materials, …

An Examination Of Work–Family Conflict In Ncaa Division Iii And Naia Sports Information Professionals, Laura M. Hatfield, Jeffrey T. Johnson
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Work–family conflict (WFC) is defined as “the discord that arises when the time devoted to or time spent fulfilling professional responsibilities interferes with or limits the amount of time available to perform family-related responsibilities” (Netemeyer, McMurrian, & Boles, 1996). A successful career in sports information requires long, demanding hours that can make finding balance between work and family difficult. The purpose of this study was to determine if NCAA Division III and NAIA sports information professionals (SIDs) experience WFC and to examine the impact of WFC on the related theories of life satisfaction (LS), job satisfaction (JS), job burnout (JB), …

Impact Of Intercollegiate Athletics On Undergraduate Enrollment At A Small, Faith-Based Institution, Matthew J. Brunet, Michele W. Atkins, Gary R. Johnson, Linn M. Stranak
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Based on previous research, it is apparent many National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I institutions benefit from the existence of and success in intercollegiate athletics. However, few studies have researched the impact of intercollegiate athletics at National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) institutions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of intercollegiate athletics at a small, faith-based institution affiliated with the NAIA. More specifically, does success in or the existence of intercollegiate athletics have an effect on students’ decisions to enroll at this institution? Findings indicate the majority of freshmen student participants, including many intercollegiate …

Strategies Implemented By Top Ncaa Olympic Coaches To Enhance Support Surrounding Their Programs, Lee Roberts, Coyte G. Cooper, Erianne A. Weight
Journal of Applied Sport Management
A shift in institutional priorities related to profit maximization in “big time” sport programs (men’s basketball and football) has led to the elimination of many men’s Olympic sport programs (Ridpath, Yiamouyiannis, Lawrence, & Galles, 2009). As previous literature has demonstrated, coaches can work toward minimizing elimination decisions by raising money that will limit the financial burden of their program on the athletic department (Weight, 2010). Thus, the purpose of the study was to explore fund-raising practices of top NCAA Division I wrestling coaches (N = 10) to determine strategies that programs can implement to encourage sustainability initiatives. Following the identification …

Future Trends In Outsourced Marketing Within Division I Intercollegiate Athletics: An Initial Round Of A Delphi Study, Robert H. Zullo
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The purpose of this study was to examine opinions regarding future trends in outsourced intercollegiate sports marketing from managers of the outsourced marketing companies hired to administer media and marketing rights at select National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I schools. Twenty-eight of the 61 companies selected to participate in this study responded. Via the Delphi Method, data were collected as descriptive statistics, and frequencies were analyzed along with qualitative responses. The findings indicated that outsourced companies seek new business opportunities for the future with athletic departments. The most likely area involved athletic facility naming rights; retailing, licensing and concessions …
Moving On Up: Division I Athletic Directors’ Career Progression And Involvement, Robin Hardin, Coyte G. Cooper, Landon T. Huffman
Moving On Up: Division I Athletic Directors’ Career Progression And Involvement, Robin Hardin, Coyte G. Cooper, Landon T. Huffman
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Collegiate athletic directors (ADs) are the chief executive officers within the athletic department of the colleges and universities they serve. While they are certainly high-profile, influential professionals, there are a limited number of research studies that focus in-depth on the career experiences of these athletic administrators. The purpose of this research was to examine the career experiences of athletic directors. The results showed a shift in the need for athletic directors to understand business and development and obtain a graduate degree. More than 80% held a master’s degree with previous areas of employment in development and marketing. Such skills were …

In Pursuit Of Sport Sustainability: Fund-Raising And The Ncaa Division I Track And Field Core Product, Logan W. Roberts, Erianne A. Weight
Journal of Applied Sport Management
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I track and field programs have been a target of elimination in recent decades (Irick, 2011) as funds are often allocated to sports that provide the largest perceived potential return on investment (Marburger & Hogshead-Makar, 2003). Building on research that documents the influential role coaches can play in sport sustainability efforts (Cooper, 2012; Weight, 2010; Weight & Cooper, 2011), this study examines fund raising and fortification strategies of 111 Division I coaches through survey methodology. Important fund raising strategies emerged including communication with donors, maintaining an up-to-date contact database, and providing thank-you notes and/ …

Sustainable Volunteerism At A Major International Sporting Event: The Impact Of Perceived Event Prestige, Seungmo Kim, Sung Il Hong, Damon P.S. Andrew
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The primary purpose of the current study was to examine the impact of perceived event prestige (PEP) on intention to continue voluntary work via volunteer commitment and satisfaction at a globally prestigious sporting event. A total of 202 volunteers at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Championship, held in August, 2011, in Daegu, South Korea, participated in the study. The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) supported the full mediating effects of both attitudinal variables between PEP and intention to continue voluntary work. In other words, volunteers are more likely to feel satisfied with their voluntary work and develop …

A Polarizing Issue: Faculty And Staff Perceptions Of Intercollegiate Athletic Academics, Governance, And Finance Post-Ncaa Investigation, Gregory Lewinter, Erianne A. Weight, Barbara Osborne, John Brunner
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Following an athletics scandal that invoked internal upheaval and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sanctions, non-athletics employees at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were invited to participate in a survey investigating their satisfaction with academics, governance, and finance of intercollegiate athletics. This study extends the 2006 Knight Commission sponsored study, Faculty Perceptions of Intercollegiate Athletics: A National Study of Faculty at NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Institution to a post-infraction single-school population. Three philosophical viewpoints describing basic faculty issues and assumptions that divide Division I institutional reformers were utilized to frame the examination (Sack, 2009). …
