Do You Have A Boyfriend Yet?, Corrine E. Fucci Oct 2013

Do You Have A Boyfriend Yet?, Corrine E. Fucci

SURGE

“Do you have a boyfriend yet?”

That was the question that haunted me for most of my teenage years, the one I knew I would be asked at each family event and have to answer as nonchalantly as I could, “No, not yet,” without letting anyone know how embarrassed I felt. The feelings of anguish and anxiety continued in games of “Never Have I Ever,” going around the table with a group of less-than-close girlfriends sharing some of our first or best romantic experiences, so grateful that I had those one or two experiences that “kind of counted but maybe …

2013 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs

At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged with their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of their disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual …

From Prison To Home, Rebecca Snyder, Randal Day Oct 2013

From Prison To Home, Rebecca Snyder, Randal Day

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Despite the recent slowing of population rates within the United States prison system, the prison population is at a record high. The vast majority of these 1.4 million incarcerated individuals will be released back into the community, and a significant number of these ex-inmates will relapse back into a habit of crime, eventually be reconvicted, and ultimately re-sentenced. The prospect of thousands of ex-prisoners returning to their homes and communities, and their probable recidivism, is a concern to many. But other than atheoretical studies on recidivism itself, prisoner re-entry as a whole has been neglected by the research community. The …

From High School Jocks To College Grads: Assessing The Long-Term Effects Of High School Sport Participation On Females’ Educational Attainment, Kelly Troutman, Dr. Mikaela Dufur Oct 2013

From High School Jocks To College Grads: Assessing The Long-Term Effects Of High School Sport Participation On Females’ Educational Attainment, Kelly Troutman, Dr. Mikaela Dufur

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Sports’ connection to education is readily apparent in American society. The presumption adopted in the late 1800s that sports serve to build character led to their integration into the education system. Today virtually every high school is engaged in interscholastic sport competition (Eitzen and Sage, 1986). The increased prevalence of sport in American society, and specifically school settings, has led to various inquiries as to the effects of participation in sports. The majority of studies centered on high school athletes have demonstrated that participants in interscholastic sport enjoy various positive benefits related to academic success (Fejgin 1994; Eccles and Barber …

Eating Disorders Among Female High School Athletes: The Questionable Effect Of Self-Esteem, Janet Shumway, Dr. Mikaela Dufur Oct 2013

Eating Disorders Among Female High School Athletes: The Questionable Effect Of Self-Esteem, Janet Shumway, Dr. Mikaela Dufur

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Millions of people in the United States suffer from serious and sometimes life-threatening eating disorders, such as bulimia and anorexia nervosa. More than 90 percent of those afflicted are young women. Researchers have studied eating disorders and the various factors leading to these behaviors, and a vast majority of these studies have indicated that self-esteem is a central factor in the development of bulimia and anorexia nervosa. Some studies indicate that selfesteem is the most important factor in the prediction of disordered eating. 1 Thus, adolescent women with low self-esteem are more inclined to develop eating disorder behaviors.

The Impact Of Family Assets And Debt On College Graduation, Min Zhan, Deidre Lanesskog Oct 2013

The Impact Of Family Assets And Debt On College Graduation, Min Zhan, Deidre Lanesskog

Center for Social Development Research

This study examines the influence of family financial assets and debt, both measured during the time of youth’s college enrollment, on the chances of college graduation. Data come from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Results from analyses controlling for a number of student, parental, and institutional characteristics indicate that family assets are positively related to the chances of college graduation among White and Black students; family debt is negatively associated with the odds of college graduation among Black students, but neither family assets nor family debt is related to the chances of college graduation among Hispanic students. Overall, results …

A Journey Home: Transnational Dominican American Identity In Julia Alvarez’S How The García Girls Lost Their Accents, Bethany A. Dolman, Dr. Trenton L. Hickman Oct 2013

A Journey Home: Transnational Dominican American Identity In Julia Alvarez’S How The García Girls Lost Their Accents, Bethany A. Dolman, Dr. Trenton L. Hickman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Transnationalism is sociology’s relatively new model of national identity that explains and validates a phenomenon that most immigrants from the Dominican Republic to the United States experience: a simultaneous sense of connection to multiple countries, cultures and national identities. I examined Dominican American transnationalism from an interdisciplinary perspective, fusing sociological and literary theory by using Julia Alvarez’s novel How the García Girls Lost Their Accents as a case study for the transnational Dominican American experience. I set out to analyze a very abstract and dynamic concept, somewhat unsure during the project’s early stages of how I was going to delimit …

Ethical Knowing In The Classroom And The Care Of Underserved Populations, Marcianna Nosek Oct 2013

Ethical Knowing In The Classroom And The Care Of Underserved Populations, Marcianna Nosek

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: The purspose of this study was to examine how ethical knowing is created in the setting of graduate level nursing education regarding the care of undersered and marginalized populations. Gadamer's writing of phronesis and hermeneutic philosophy provide the philosophical foundation and framework for the study. Specific aims include: to create opportunities for ethical knowing or phronetic experience in the classroom; to bring together two diverse groups with different life experiences and prospectives, i.e., nursing students and formerly incarcerated adults together in a dialectic and dialogic way; to develop new meanings and understandings about ethical knowing or phronesis as it …

Only Hindsight: Where Are The Historian Futurists?, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

A friend who is planning a pie-in-the-sky conference (about which I'm super excited) texted me today with a quick question. "Who would be a good 'Historian of the Future?'" he asked, adding the bonus that I could dream big. "Money no object," the next text read.

I was at a loss for a few minutes. Who is the historian of the future? Who is trying to visualize that skill-set, categorize that life, read the trends of the past and plot the course of history yet to come? [excerpt]

Nurse Leaders Are The Key To Our Looming Workforce Dilemma, Catriona Anne Booker Oct 2013

Nurse Leaders Are The Key To Our Looming Workforce Dilemma, Catriona Anne Booker

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Monday, July 22, 2013:

Purpose: As healthcare faces a critical shortage of qualified nursing staff, this ageing workforce is further challenged as the 'Baby Boomer' generation prepares for retirement. While current retention strategies are focused on recruitment, little is known about end of career nurses' (EOCNs') retirement decisions. This Australian study explored factors that influence EOCNs' decisions regarding their workforce participation, and identified leadership as a key factor which influenced their decision.

Methods: A mixed method case study methodology was used to explore EOCN's perceptions concerning their workforce participation. Data were collected from 218 participants (Registered Nurses …

Of Hawks And Doves: Monetary Policy By Heterogeneous Committees, Gregor Schubert Oct 2013

Of Hawks And Doves: Monetary Policy By Heterogeneous Committees, Gregor Schubert

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper develops an institutional explanation based on strategic, heterogeneous committee members for the phenomenon of inertia in monetary policy rates, by exploring variations of a game-theoretic two-period, two-player bargaining model with an endogenous status quo. The results show that inertial policy-making can arise from heterogeneity in preferences and that gridlock and policy inefficiency can become more likely due to variability in agenda-setting power, or decreases in uncertainty over the future. These conclusions are shown to accord with the empirical evidence on monetary policy setting by committees at major central banks over the last decade.

It’S Critical: Legal Participatory Action Research, Emily Houh, Kristin (Brandser) Kalsem Oct 2013

It’S Critical: Legal Participatory Action Research, Emily Houh, Kristin (Brandser) Kalsem

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

The ongoing community-based research project that we describe in this article will contribute, we hope, to an understanding of the fringe economy by offering insights into what remains “unexplained” in the current existing literature, namely the gender and race disparities relating to who uses “alternative financial service” (AFS) products. This article likewise contributes to a growing body of literature within Critical Race Theory and Critical Race Feminism that deals with economic inequalities and how they are inextricably and structurally linked to race and gender subordination. By explicitly incorporating “participatory action research” (PAR) values and methods into our work as critical …

Does Residence In An Ethnic Community Help Immigrants In A Recession?, Pengyu Zhu, Cathy Yang Liu, Gary Painter Oct 2013

Does Residence In An Ethnic Community Help Immigrants In A Recession?, Pengyu Zhu, Cathy Yang Liu, Gary Painter

Urban Studies and Community Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research on how the residential segregation of immigrant populations has impacted their labor market outcomes presents many challenges because of the fact that immigrants often choose to locate near co-ethnics to share resources and cultural amenities. Because not all immigrants choose to live in these ethnic communities, identification of a causal effect on living in an ethnic community is problematic. The estimation of the effect of living in these ethnic communities is also difficult because it is ambiguous whether such residence will help or harm the labor market outcomes of immigrants. This study implements a number of approaches to help …

Conformity To Masculine Norms And Intellectual Engagement, Heath Marrs Oct 2013

Conformity To Masculine Norms And Intellectual Engagement, Heath Marrs

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Research on the relationship between masculinity and intellectual engagement may be helpful in exploring the current challenges of male students in academic settings. Although the traditional male role in Western societies has often included notions of winning, competitiveness, and achievement, there is a growing research literature that documents male struggles with achievement, particularly in academic, intellectual, and occupational domains (Morris, 2011; Rosin, 2010; Sax, 2008a, b). In this study, the relationships between conformity to masculine norms and intellectual engagement were explored in a sample of diverse men in the United States. It was predicted that men who more strongly conformed …

Bobby Fischer In Socio-Cultural Perspective: Application Of Hiller’S (2011) Multi-Layered Chronological Chart Methodology, Jospeh G. Ponterotto, Jason D. Reynolds

The Qualitative Report

This article presents a case study application of Hiller’s (2011) Multi - Layered Chronological Chart (MLCC) methodology to the life story of former World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer. Designed for use in qualitative biographical studies, the MLCC is adapted here for psychobiographical research. In 1972, Fischer became an American Cold War hero as he wrestled the World Chess Championship from a half century of Soviet domination. His rapid rise to world fame was followed by infamy as Fischer abandoned competitive chess, grew increasingly Anti - Semitic and Anti - American, became a fugitive from U.S. justice, and died in relative …
