Culture Clash: Symbolic Capital And The Limits To Open Access Journal Growth In The Humanities And Social Sciences, David Michalski

SJSU Open Access Conference

Each year brings more open access peer-review journals to the humanities and social sciences. Yet despite this proliferation, for-profit publishers continue to dominate, and hold the most prestigious journals in their portfolios, pushing the tipping point imagined by open access advocates seemingly out of reach. This project examines the social life of academic publishing to better understand the obstacles preventing a more robust turn to open access, one that does not simply mean more journals, but one that sees the more prestigious journals opting for an open access platform.

Drawing on the work of cultural sociologist, Pierre Bourdieu, I examine …

Bumps In The Road: An Investigation Of Students’ Decisions Regarding Graduate School, Samantha Wendler Oct 2013

Bumps In The Road: An Investigation Of Students’ Decisions Regarding Graduate School, Samantha Wendler

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

The value of higher education, including graduate education, has been a recent subject of debate. However, economic benefits of advanced degrees have been shown, including higher salary and lower unemployment rates. In general, the benefit of a graduate education seems to outweigh the costs. Despite these benefits, some otherwise prepared individuals choose not to attend graduate school. Others who enroll never complete their degree. We examined characteristics of these groups, including the value they place on graduate education, compared to those who still plan on attending, currently attend, or completed their degree.

Graduate Student Perceptions Of Graduate School Preparation For The Workplace, Chelsea Ezzo Oct 2013

Graduate Student Perceptions Of Graduate School Preparation For The Workplace, Chelsea Ezzo

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

Graduate degree–holders occupy critical positions in the workforce. It is imperative that these individuals possess the skills necessary to succeed in their post-graduate positions. This paper discusses a survey of 1,925 employed individuals who completed a graduate degree. Results indicate that, in addition to imparting field specific knowledge, graduate programs are equipping students to perform a wide range of nonacademic skills (e.g., teamwork) deemed valuable in the workplace. However, there are still some areas in which universities could better tailor their graduate programs to align with the responsibilities of the employment sectors that their students will enter upon graduation.

Recruitment And Retention Of Rural Nursing Students: A Retrospective Study, J. Bigbee, D. Mixon

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction: The shortage of registered nurses is an issue globally, but particularly in rural and remote areas. Previous research in medicine suggests that recruiting students from rural backgrounds is an effective strategy to enhance the supply of rural healthcare providers. This strategy has not been widely adopted or evaluated in nursing. The purpose of this study was to compare rural and urban nursing students in relation to application, admission, and retention/graduation trends at a metropolitan state university in the Pacific Northwest area of the USA.
Methods: A retrospective longitudinal descriptive design was used, analyzing existing data from 2005 to …

The Participation Of Women In Education In El Salvador, Amber Nicole Jensen, Dr. Renata Forste Oct 2013

The Participation Of Women In Education In El Salvador, Amber Nicole Jensen, Dr. Renata Forste

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A low level of education, especially among women, is a basic characteristic of all developing countries. Research indicates that in third-world countries, “women remain under-represented at all levels of education relative to men. Fewer females than males enter educational programs…; fewer receive technical and vocational training; and women account for a very small proportion of enrollment in postsecondary education” (Kelly 1). A key factor inhibiting women’s education in developing countries is lack of participation. Nelly Stromquist identifies “economic conditions of the household, cultural and religious values, parental aspirations for children’s education, [and] distance to school” as determinants of educational participation. …

This article will focus on physician executive education in the United States although there may be some lessons for physician executives in other nations with different health systems.

The Doctoral Learning Journey And Outcomes For Business Leaders And Corporate Managers, Barry Elsey Oct 2013

The Doctoral Learning Journey And Outcomes For Business Leaders And Corporate Managers, Barry Elsey

Journal of Executive Education

International education is big business in Australia and the University of South Australia (UniSA) is a leading player, particularly in the Asia Pacific region (Ciccarelli, 2007). Forced by government to generate income beyond public subsidy Australian universities have had little choice but to enter the competitive private sector marketplace offshore to attract international students. In the case of UniSA special attention has been paid to marketing offshore ‘executive’ doctoral programs for those in leadership roles in business and corporate affairs. These business and corporate leaders drawn to these doctoral programs is the subject of this paper.

Executive Education: Mired In A Leadership Theory Jungle, William R. Mcnay

The Creative Citizen: Understanding The Value Of Design Education Programs In The Knowledge Economy, Natalie Wright, Rebekah Davis, Sam Bucolo Oct 2013

The Creative Citizen: Understanding The Value Of Design Education Programs In The Knowledge Economy, Natalie Wright, Rebekah Davis, Sam Bucolo

Learn X Design Conference Series

The knowledge economy relies on the diffusion and use of knowledge as well as its creation (Houghton and Sheenan, 2000). The future success of economic activity will depend on the capacity of organisations to transform by increasing their flexibility. In particular, this transformation is dependant on a decentralised, networked and multi-skilled workforce. To help organisations transition, new strategies and structures for education are required. Education systems need to concentrate less on specialist skills and more on the development of people with broad-based problem solving skills that are adaptable, with social and inter-personal communication skills necessary for networking and communication. This …

Exploring The Role Of Social Reasoning And Self-Efficacy In The Mathematics Problem-Solving Performance Of Lower- And Higher-Income Children, Allison G. Butler Oct 2013

Exploring The Role Of Social Reasoning And Self-Efficacy In The Mathematics Problem-Solving Performance Of Lower- And Higher-Income Children, Allison G. Butler

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Research documents an income-based achievement gap in mathematics, yet children from lower-income backgrounds do not lag behind their more advantaged peers in high-level social reasoning tasks. The purpose here was to investigate whether modifying mathematics word problems to make them more socially based would impact the mathematics performance and/or mathematics self-efficacy of lower- versus higher-income children. Research questions regarding (1) the relative difficulty of symbolic equations versus word problems, (2) the impact of socially modifying word problems on children’s accuracy and self-efficacy, and (3) the relation between children’s mathematics performance and mathematics self-efficacy were explored. Participants were 164 5th graders. …
